We report on the observation of collective atomic recoil lasing and superradiant Rayleigh scattering with ultracold and Bose-Einstein condensed atoms in an optical ring cavity. Both phenomena are based on instabilities evoked by the collective interaction of light with cold atomic gases. This publication clarifies the link between the two effects. The observation of superradiant behavior with thermal clouds as hot as several tens of $μ\textrm{K}$ proves that the phenomena are driven by the cooperative dynamics of the atoms, which is strongly enhanced by the presence of the ring cavity.
Collective interaction of light with an atomic gas can give rise to superradiant instabilities. We experimentally study the sudden build-up of a reverse light field in a laser-driven high-finesse ring cavity filled with ultracold thermal or condensed atoms. While superradiant Rayleigh scattering from atomic clouds is normally only observed at very low temperatures (i.e. well below $1 μ$K), the presence of the ring cavity enhances cooperativity and allows for superradiance with thermal clouds as hot as several $10 μ$K. A characterization of the superradiance at various temperatures and cooperat…
We present a detailed theoretical analysis of superradiant Rayleigh scattering from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. A thorough investigation of the spatially resolved time-evolution of optical and matter-wave fields is performed in the framework of the semiclassical Maxwell-Schroedinger equations. Our theory is not only able to explain many of the known experimental observations, e.g., the behavior of the atomic side-mode distributions, but also provides further detailed insights into the coupled dynamics of optical and matter-wave fields. To work out the significance of propagation effects,…
Due to its coherence properties and high optical depth, a Bose-Einstein condensate provides an ideal setting to investigate collective atom-light interactions. Superradiant light scattering in a Bose-Einstein condensate is a fascinating example of such an interaction. It is an analogous process to Dicke superradiance, in which an electronically inverted sample decays collectively, leading to the emission of one or more light pulses in a well-defined direction. Through time-resolved measurements of the superradiant light pulses emitted by an end-pumped BEC, we study the close connection of supe…
We study Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering properties of quantum phases in the generalized Dicke model (GDM) generated by a cavity Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) doped with a single impurity. It is shown that the normal and superradiant phases of the GDM exhibit much rich EPR steerability. In the normal phase, there exist one-way EPR steering from the cavity field (condensed atoms) to condensed atoms (the cavity field). In the superradiant phase, there is either one-way or two-way EPR steering for the cavity field and condensed atoms. It is found that the single impurity can act as a sing…
We investigate the possibility of a Dicke-type superradiant phase transition of an atomic gas with an extended model which takes into account the short-range depolarizing interactions between atoms approaching each other as close as the atomic size scale, which interaction appears in a regularized electric-dipole picture of the QED of atoms. By using a mean field model, we find that a critical density does indeed exist, though the atom-atom contact interaction shifts it to a higher value than it can be obtained from the bare Dicke-model. We argue that the system, at the critical density, trans…
We investigate experimentally the effects of light assisted collisions on the coherence between momentum states in Bose-Einstein condensates. The onset of superradiant Rayleigh scattering serves as a sensitive monitor for matter wave coherence. A subtle interplay of binary and collective effects leads to a profound asymmetry between the two sides of the atomic resonance and provides far bigger coherence loss rates for a condensate bathed in blue detuned light than previously estimated. We present a simplified quantitative model containing the essential physics to explain our experimental data …
We study experimentally superradiant Rayleigh scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a new parameter regime where pump depletion and the exchange of photons between the endfire modes are important. Through experiments and simulations we show that collective atom light coupling leads to the self-organized formation of dynamic Bragg gratings within the sample. These gratings lead to an efficient back-scattering of pump photons and optical resonator structures within the BEC.
In this paper we consider two models which exhibit equilibrium BEC superradiance. They are related to two different types of superradiant scattering observed in recent experiments. The first one corresponds to the amplification of matter-waves due to Raman superradiant scattering from a cigar-shaped BE condensate, when the recoiled and the condensed atoms are in different internal states. The main mechanism is stimulated Raman scattering in two-level atoms, which occurs in a superradiant way. Our second model is related to the superradiant Rayleigh scattering from a cigar-shaped BE condensate.…
Dicke superrandiance is a cooperative phenomenon which arises from the collective coupling of an ensemble of atoms to the electromagnetic radiation. Here we discuss the quantifying of quantum coherence for the Dicke model of superradiance in the mean-field approximation. We found the single-atom $l_1$-norm of coherence is given by the square root of the normalized average intensity of radiation emitted by the superradiant system. This validates quantum coherence as a useful figure of merit towards the understanding of superradiance phenomenon in the mean-field approach. In particular, this res…
Sign-changing interactions constitute a crucial ingredient in the creation of frustrated many-body systems such as spin glasses. We present here the demonstration of a photon-mediated sign-changing interaction between Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) atoms in a confocal cavity. The interaction between two atoms is of an unusual, nonlocal form proportional to the cosine of the inner product of the atoms' position vectors. This interaction arises from the differing Gouy phase shifts of the cavity's degenerate modes. Moreover, these Gouy phase anomalies induce an extra pattern of Z_2-symmetry-breaki…
We investigate the dynamics of matter and optical waves at the early stage of superradiant Rayleigh scattering from Bose-Einstein Condensates. Our analysis is within a spatially dependent quantum model which is capable of providing analytic solutions for the operators of interest. The predictions of the present model are compared to the predictions of a closely related mean field model, and we provide a procedure that allows one to calculate quantum expectation values by averaging over semiclassical solutions. The coherence properties of the outgoing scattered light are also analyzed, and it i…
Scattering of light at a distribution of scatterers is an intrinsically cooperative process, which means that the scattering rate and the angular distribution of the scattered light are essentially governed by bulk properties of the distribution, such as its size, shape, and density, although local disorder and density fluctuations may have an important impact on the cooperativity. Via measurements of the radiation pressure exerted by a far-detuned laser beam on a very small and dense cloud of ultracold atoms, we are able to identify the respective roles of superradiant acceleration of the sca…
Cooling of molecules via free-space dissipative scattering of photons is thought not to be practicable due to the inherently large number of Raman loss channels available to molecules and the prohibitive expense of building multiple repumping laser systems. The use of an optical cavity to enhance coherent Rayleigh scattering into a decaying cavity mode has been suggested as a potential method to mitigate Raman loss, thereby enabling the laser cooling of molecules to ultracold temperatures. We discuss the possibility of cavity-assisted laser cooling particles without closed transitions, identif…
Recent experimental advances in the field of cold-atom cavity QED provide a powerful tool for exploring non-equilibrium correlated quantum phenomena beyond conventional condensed-matter scenarios. We present the dynamical phase diagram of a driven Bose-Einstein condensate coupled with the light field of a cavity, with a transverse driving field red-detuned from atomic resonance. We identify regions in parameter space showing dynamical instabilities in the form of limit cycles, which evolve into chaotic behavior in the strong driving limit. Such limit cycles originate from the interplay between…
We consider the fundamental problem of high temperature phase transitions in the system of high density two-level atoms off-resonantly interacting with a pump field in the presence of optical collisions (OCs) and placed in the cavity. OCs are considered in the framework of thermalization of atomic dressed state (DS) population. For the case of a strong atom-field coupling condition we analyze the problem of thermodynamically equilibrium superradiant phase transition for the order parameter representing a real amplitude of cavity mode and taking place as a result of atomic DSs thermalization pr…
In the context of ultracold atoms in multimode optical cavities, the appearance of a quantum-critical glass phase of atomic spins has been predicted recently. Due to the long-range nature of the cavity-mediated interactions, but also the presence of a driving laser and dissipative processes such as cavity photon loss, the quantum optical realization of glassy physics has no analog in condensed matter, and could evolve into a "cavity glass microscope" for frustrated quantum systems out-of-equilibrium. Here we develop the non-equilibrium theory of the multimode Dicke model with quenched disorder…
The mechanical influence on objects due to their interaction with light has been a central topic in atomic physics for decades. Thus, one finds that many concepts developed to describe cavity optomechanical systems with solid-state mechanical oscillators have also been developed in parallel in relation to cold atomic physics. I describe several of these ideas from atomic physics, including optical methods for detecting quantum states of single cold atoms and atomic ensembles, motional effects within single-atom cavity quantum electrodynamics, and collective optical effects such as superradiant…
