Spin-polarised atomic ensembles probed by light based on the Faraday interaction are a versatile platform for numerous applications in quantum metrology and quantum information processing. Here we consider an ensemble of Alkali atoms that are continuously optically pumped and probed. Due to the collective scattering of photons at large optical depth, the steady state of atoms does not correspond to an uncorrelated tensor-product state, as is usually assumed. We introduce a self-consistent method to approximate the steady state including the pair correlations, taking into account the multilevel structure of atoms. We find and characterize regimes of Raman lasing, akin to the model of a superradiant laser. We determine the spectrum of the collectively scattered photons, which also characterises the coherence time of the collective spin excitations on top of the stationary correlated mean-field state, as relevant for applications in metrology and quantum information.
We propose to pump semiconductor quantum dots with surface acoustic waves which deliver an alternating periodic sequence of electrons and holes. In combination with a good optical cavity such regular pumping could entail anti-bunching and sub-Poissonian photon statistics. In the bad-cavity limit a train of equally spaced photons would arise.
The surprising recent observation of highly emissive triplet-states in lead halide perovskites accounts for their orders-of-magnitude brighter optical signals and high quantum efficiencies compared to other semiconductors. This makes them attractive for future optoelectronic applications, especially in bright low-threshold nano-lasers. Whilst non-resonantly pumped lasing from all-inorganic lead-halide perovskites is now well-established as an attractive pathway to scalable low-power laser sources for nano-optoelectronics, here we showcase a resonant optical pumping scheme on a fast triplet-sta…
We observe the buildup of a frequency-shifted reverse light field in a unidirectionally pumped high-$Q$ optical ring cavity serving as a dipole trap for cold atoms. This effect is enhanced and a steady state is reached, if via an optical molasses an additional friction force is applied to the atoms. We observe the displacement of the atoms accelerated by momentum transfer in the backscattering process and interpret our observations in terms of the collective atomic recoil laser. Numerical simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results.
We study motion and field dynamics of a single-atom laser consisting of a single incoherently pumped free atom moving in an optical high-{\it Q} resonator. For sufficient pumping, the system starts lasing whenever the atom is close to a field antinode. If the field mode eigenfrequency is larger than the atomic transition frequency, the generated laser light attracts the atom to the field antinode and cools its motion. Using quantum Monte Carlo wave function simulations, we investigate this coupled atom-field dynamics including photon recoil and cavity decay. In the regime of strong coupling, t…
Networks of globally coupled oscillators exhibit phase transitions from incoherent to coherent states. Atoms interacting with the counterpropagating modes of a unidirectionally pumped high-finesse ring cavity form such a globally coupled network. The coupling mechanism is provided by collective atomic recoil lasing (CARL), i.e. cooperative Bragg scattering of laser light at an atomic density grating, which is self-induced by the laser light. Under the rule of an additional friction force, the atomic ensemble is expected to undergo a phase transition to a state of synchronized atomic motion. We…
Efficient, low threshold, and compact semiconductor laser sources are being investigated for many applications in high-speed communications, information processing, and optical interconnects. The best edge-emitting and vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) have thresholds on the order of 100 \muA[1,2] but dissipate too much power to be practical for many applications, particularly optical interconnects[3]. Optically pumped photonic crystal (PC) nanocavity lasers represent the state of the art in low-threshold lasers[4,5]; however, in order to be practical, techniques to electrically…
We show that it is possible to realize simultaneous Raman lasing at two different frequencies using a double-$Λ$ system pumped by a bi-frequency field. The Raman lasers are phase-locked to one another, and the beat-frequency matches the energy difference between the two meta-stable ground states. Akin to a conventional Raman laser, the phase-locked Raman laser pair is expected to be subluminal. As such, it is expected to be highly stable against perturbations in cavity length, and have a quantum noise limited linewidth that is far below that of a conventional laser. Because of these properties…
We theoretically investigate the emission properties of a single-mode cavity coupled to a mesoscopic number of incoherently pumped quantum emitters. We propose an operational measure for the medium cooperativity, valid both in the bad and in the good cavity regimes. We show that the opposite regimes of subradiance and superradiance correspond to negative and positive cooperativity, respectively. The lasing regime is shown to be characterized by nonnegative cooperativity. In the bad cavity regime we show that the cooperativity defines the transitions from subradiance to superradiance. In the go…
We investigate laser-induced quantum interference phenomena in superradiance processes and in an ensemble of initially excited $Λ-$type closely packed three-level emitters. The lower doublet levels are pumped with a coherent laser field. Due to constructive quantum interference effects, the superradiance occurs on a much weaker atomic transition which is not the case in the absence of the coherent driving. This result may be of visible relevance for enhancing ultraweak transitions in atomic or atomic-like systems, respectively, or for high-frequency lasing effects.
Laser interferometric gravitational-wave detectors implement Fabry-Perot cavities to increase their peak sensitivity. However, this is at cost of reducing their detection bandwidth, which origins from the propagation phase delay of the light. The "white-light-cavity" idea, first proposed by Wicht et al. [Optics Communications 134, 431 (1997)], is to circumvent this limitation by introducing anomalous dispersion, using double-pumped gain medium, to compensate for such phase delay. In this article, starting from the Hamiltonian of atom-light interaction, we apply the input-output formalism to ev…
We measure the quantum fluctuations of a pumped nonlinear resonator, using a superconducting artificial atom as an in-situ probe. The qubit excitation spectrum gives access to the frequency and temperature of the intracavity field fluctuations. These are found to be in agreement with theoretical predictions; in particular we experimentally observe the phenomenon of quantum heating.
We investigate the steady-state photon-number squeezing and quantum entanglement in a network of nondegenerate optical parametric oscillators (NOPOs). We treat each NOPO with Shen's Raman laser model, whose lasing mode provides a photon-number-squeezed state. Two dissipatively coupled NOPOs satisfy Hillery-Zubairy's $HZ1$ entanglement criterion if they are pumped far above the threshold and the dissipative coupling is sufficiently larger than the NOPO cavity loss.
The collective dynamics of mobile scatterers and light in optical resonators generates complex behaviour. For strong transverse illumination a phase transition from homogeneous to crystalline particle order appears. In contrast, a gas inside a single-side pumped ring cavity exhibits an instability towards bunching and collective acceleration called collective atomic recoil lasing (CARL). We demonstrate that by driving two orthogonally polarized counter propagating modes of a ring resonator one realises both cases within one system. The corresponding phase diagram depending on the two pump inte…
We study the optically pumped nuclear spin polarization in a single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well in the quantum Hall system. We apply resistive detection via the contact hyperfine interaction, which provides high sensitivity and selectivity, to probe a small amount of polarized nuclear spins in a single well. The properties of the optical nuclear spin polarization are clearly observed. We theoretically discuss the nuclear spin dynamics accompanied with doped electrons to analyze the experimental data. The optical nuclear polarization spectra exhibit electron-spin-resolved lowest Landau level inter…
The linewidth of an atom laser can be limited by excitation of higher energy modes in the source Bose-Einstein condensate, energy shifts in that condensate due to the atomic interactions, or phase diffusion of the lasing mode due to those interactions. The first two are effects that can be described with a semiclassical model, and have been studied in detail for both pumped and unpumped atom lasers. The third is a purely quantum statistical effect, and has been studied only in zero dimensional models. We examine an unpumped atom laser in one dimension using a quantum field theory using stochas…
