The simultaneous existence of coherent perfect absorption (CPA) and lasing is one of the most intriguing features of non-Hermitian photonics. However, the link between CPA lasing and PT symmetry breaking at the exceptional point (EP) needs clarification. In this paper, we study the manifestations of the CPA-laser effect in a PT-symmetric multilayer loss-gain structure using both the transfer-matrix method and numerical simulations of the Maxwell-Bloch equations. We show that the maximal contrast between absorption and amplification at different phase relations between the input waves is reached well below the EP and therefore is not connected to true lasing. In this regime, there is a good qualitative agreement between both computational approaches. Above the EP, the system demonstrates lasing regardless of the parameters of the input waves. Thus, the maximal contrast between the absorption and amplification rather corresponds to the CPA amplifier than to the CPA laser.
We present a model study to estimate the sensitivity of the optical absorption of multilayered graphene structure to the subnanometer interlayer separation. Starting from a transfer-matrix formalism we derive semi-analytical expressions for the far-field observables. Neglecting the interlayer separation, results in upper bounds to the absorption of 50% for real-valued sheet conductivities, exactly the value needed for coherent perfect absorption (CPA), while for complex-valued conductivities we identify upper bounds that are always lower. For pristine graphene the number of layers required to …
Non-Hermitian photonic systems with loss and gain attract much attention due to their exceptional abilities in molding the flow of light. Introducing asymmetry to the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system with perfectly balanced loss and gain, we reveal the mechanism of transition from the quasibound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) to the simultaneous coherent perfect absorption (CPA) and lasing in a layered structure comprising epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) media. Two types of asymmetry (geometric and non-Hermitian) are analyzed with the scattering matrix technique. The effect of the CPA-lasing associ…
Recently, a broad spectrum of exceptional scattering effects, including bound states in the continuum, exceptional points in PT-symmetrical non-Hermitian systems, and many others attainable in wisely suitably engineered structures have been predicted and demonstrated. Among these scattering effects, those that rely on coherence properties of light are of a particular interest today. Here, we have discussed coherent scattering effects in photonics. Coherent perfect absorption (CPA) generalizes the concept of perfect absorption to systems with several excitation channels. This effect allows all-…
We theoretically and numerically investigate the scattering behavior of a periodic parity-time (PT)-symmetric waveguide network composed of a finite number of unit cells. Specifically, we put forward rigorous and formally exact expressions for wave propagation, bi-directional reflectionless, and coherent perfect absorption and lasing (CPAL) occuring in a finite periodic optical waveguide network. Through the use of the generalized parametric space derived from observation of PT-symmetric transfer matrix, Lorentz reciprocity theorem and non-imaginary Bloch phase, we observe that when the unit c…
In this thesis we address a series of new problems in non-hermitian optical scattering with increasing degrees of complexity. We develop the theory of reflectionless scattering modes, introducing a novel and broad class of impedance-matched eigenproblems: for a given structure, find the incident wavefronts and frequencies which are not partially reflected, but are instead transmitted through the scatterer, or dissipated within it. We analyze the relevant symmetry properties, and find that they support exceptional points (EPs) which can be directly probed with steady-state excitation. We study …
We experimentally and theoretically challenge the concept of coherent perfect absorption (CPA) as a narrow frequency resonant mechanism associated with scattering processes that respect scale-invariance. Using a microwave platform, consisting of a lossy nonlinear resonator coupled to two interrogating antennas, we show that a coherent incident excitation can trigger a self-induced perfect absorption once its intensity exceeds a critical value. Importantly, a (near) perfect absorption persists for a broad band frequency range around the nonlinear CPA condition. Its origin is traced to a quartic…

Engineering the transport of radiation and its interaction with matter using non-Hermiticity, particularly through spectral degeneracies known as exceptional points(EPs), is an emerging field that has both fundamental and practical implications. Chiral behavior in the vicinity of EPs opens new opportunities in radiation control, such as unidirectional reflection or lasing with potential applications in areas ranging from cavity quantum electrodynamics and spectral filtering to sensing and thermal imaging. However, tuning and stabilizing a system to a discrete EP in parameter space is a challen…
Using the Maxwell-Bloch equations for resonantly absorbing and amplifying media, we study the temporal dynamics of light propagation through the PT-symmetric structures with alternating loss and gain layers. This approach allows us to precisely describe the response of the structure near the exceptional points of PT-symmetry breaking phase transition and, in particular, take into account the nonlinear effect of loss and gain saturation in the PT-symmetry broken state. We reveal that in this latter state the multilayer system possesses a lasing-like behavior releasing the pumped energy in the f…
Non-Hermitian singularities known as exceptional-points (EPs) have been shown to exhibit increased sensitivities but the observation of EPs has so far been limited to wavelength scaled systems subject to diffraction limit. We propose a novel approach to EPs and report their first observation in plasmonics at room temperature. The plasmonic EPs are based on the hybridization of detuned resonances in multilayered plasmonic crystals to reach a critical complex coupling rate between nanoantennas arrays, and, resulting in the simultaneous coalescence of the resonances and loss rates. Because plasmo…
Spectral singularities appearing in parity-time (PT)-symmetric non-Hermitian optical systems have aroused a growing interest due to their new, exhilarating applications, such as bifurcation effects at exceptional points and the coexistence of coherent perfect absorber and laser (so-called CPAL point). We introduce here how the concept of CPAL action provoked in PT-symmetric metasurfaces can be translated into practical implementation of a low-loss zero- or low-index channel supporting a nearly undamped fast-wave propagation. Such a PT-synthetic metachannel shows the capability to produce a hig…
We present an all-fiber emitter-cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) system which consists of two two-level emitters and a nanofiber cavity. Our scheme makes it possible to observe the higher-order exceptional points based on the coupling between the emitters and the nanofiber cavity. The effective gain of this cavity can be obtained by weakly driven to the nanofiber cavity via two identical laser fields, which will realize coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in the implementation of the experiments. Under the experimental feasible parameters, the Hamiltonian of this system is in the condition o…
The physics of exceptional point (EP) singularities, has been a key to a wide range of unique physical applications in open systems. In this context, the mutual interactions among four coupled states around a fourth-order EP (EP4) in a physical system is yet to be explored. Here, we investigate the unique features of an EP4 in a fabrication feasible planar optical waveguide with a multilayer gain-loss profile based on only two tunable parameters. A unique `fourth-order $β$-switching' phenomenon due to quasi-static gain-loss variation around EP4 has been explored. An exclusive chiral light dyna…
Unique and highly tunable optical properties of PT-symmetric systems and metamaterials enable a plenty of entirely new linear and nonlinear optical phenomena with numerous applications, e.g., for designing subdiffraction lenses, nonreciprocal devices, etc. Therefore, the artificial media with the PT symmetry attract ever-increasing attention and are now a subject for intensive investigations. One of the commonly used methods providing information about the optical response of artificial nanostructural media is a so-called effective medium theory. Here we examine the possibility of utilizing th…
$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry is a unique platform for light manipulation and versatile use in unidirectional invisibility, lasing, sensing, etc. Broken and unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric states in non-Hermitian open systems are described by scattering matrices. A multilayer structure, as a simplest example of the open system, has no certain definition of the scattering matrix, since the output ports can be permuted. The uncertainty in definition of the exceptional points bordering $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-broken states poses an important problem, because the exception…
Epsilon-near-zero materials are exceptional candidates for studying electrodynamics and nonlinear optical processes at the nanoscale. We demonstrate that by alternating a metal and a highly doped conducting-oxide, the epsilon-near-zero regime may be accessed resulting in an anisotropic, composite nanostructure that significantly enhances nonlinear interactions. Using two independent and different computation techniques we show that the structure can enhance the local field intensity by nearly two orders of magnitudes, in large part due to the onset of the effective anisotropy. The investigatio…
Parity-Time (PT) symmetric wave devices, which exploit balanced interactions between material gain and loss, exhibit extraordinary properties, including lasing and flux-conserving scattering processes. In a seemingly different research field, periodically driven systems, also known as time-Floquet systems, have been widely studied as a relevant platform for reconfigurable active wave control and manipulation. In this article, we explore the connection between PT-symmetry and parametric time-Floquet systems. Instead of relying on material gain, we use parametric amplification by considering a t…
Non-Hermitian systems at the exceptional point (EP) degeneracy are demonstrated to be highly sensitive to environmental perturbation. Here, we propose and theoretically investigate a novel multilayered heterostructure favoring double EPs for a unique set of material parameters at which forward- and backward-reflection coefficients vanish, respectively. Such an EP heterostructure is shown to scatter off light when system parameters are perturbed away from the degeneracies due to the effect of ambient temperature and mechanical stress fluctuations. The proposed structure is conducive in manipula…
