We show how to parameterise solutions of the general relativistic vector constraint equation on Einstein manifolds by unconstrained potentials. We provide a similar construction for the trace-free part of tensors satisfying the linearised scalar constraint. Previous work of ours has provided similar different constructions for solutions of the linearized constraints in the case where the cosmological constant $Λ$ is zero. We use our new potentials to show that one can shield linearised gravitational fields using linearised gravitational fields without imposing the TT gauge (as done in previous work), for any value of $Λ\in \mathbb{R}$.
In this short note we shall demonstrate that given a smooth solution $γ$ to the linearised Einstein equations on Schwarzschild which is supported on the $l\geq 2$ spherical harmonics and expressed relative to a transverse and traceless gauge then one can construct from it a smooth solution to the sourced Maxwell equations expressed relative to a generalised Lorentz gauge. Here the Maxwell current is constructed from those gauge-invariant combinations of the components of $γ$ which are determined by solutions to the Regge--Wheeler and Zerilli equations. The result thus provides an elegant link …
A classical problem in general relativity is the Cauchy problem for the linearised Einstein equation (the initial value problem for gravitational waves) on a globally hyperbolic vacuum spacetime. A well-known result is that it is uniquely solvable up to gauge solutions, given initial data on a spacelike Cauchy hypersurface. The solution map is an isomorphism between initial data (modulo gauge producing initial data) and solutions (modulo gauge solutions). In the first part of this work, we show that the solution map is actually an isomorphism of locally convex topological vector spaces. This i…
We quantize the linearised Einstein-Klein-Gordon system on arbitrary on-shell backgrounds in a manifestly covariant and gauge-invariant manner. For the special case of perturbations in Inflation, i.e. on-shell backgrounds of Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker type, we compare our general quantization construction with the standard approach to the quantum theory of perturbations in Inflation. We find that not all local quantum observables of the linearised Einstein-Klein-Gordon system can be split into local observables of scalar and tensor type as in the standard approach. However, we argue t…
We construct a scattering theory for the linearised Einstein equations on a Schwarzschild background in a double null gauge. We build on the results of Part I \cite{Mas20}, where we used the energy conservation enjoyed by the Regge--Wheeler equation associated with the stationarity of the Schwarzschild background to construct a scattering theory for the Teukolsky equations of spin $\pm2$. We now extend the scattering theory of Part I to the full system of linearised Einstein equations by treating it as a system of transport equations which is sourced by solutions to the Teukolsky equations, le…
We relate the recent derivation of the linearised Einstein equation on an AdS background from holographic entanglement entropy arguments to the Sparling construction: we derive the differential form whose exterior derivative gives the Einstein equation from the Sparling formalism. We develop the study of perturbations within the context of the Sparling formalism and find that the Sparling form vanishes for linearised perturbations on flat space.
We construct a scattering theory for the spin $\pm2$ Teukolsky equations on the exterior of the Schwarzschild spacetime, as a first step towards developing a scattering theory for the linearised Einstein equations in double null gauge. This is done by exploiting a physical-space version of the Chandrasekhar transformation used by Dafermos, Holzegel and Rodnianski in [arxiv:1601.06467] to prove the linear stability of the Schwarzschild solution. We also address the Teukolsky-Starobinsky correspondence and construct an isomorphism between scattering data for the $+2$ and $-2$ Teukolsky equations…
The field equations are proposed for the third rank tensor field with the hook Young diagram. The equations describe the irreducible spin two massless representation in any $d\geq 3$. The starting point of the construction is the linearised system of Einstein equations which includes the Nordström equation. This equation, being considered irrespectively to the rest of the Einstein system, corresponds to the topological field theory. The general solution is a pure gauge, modulo topological modes which we neglect in this article. We find the sequence of the reducible gauge transformations for th…
We develop a general perturbative analysis on vacuum spacetimes which can be constructed by generating manifolds of revolution around a curve, and apply it to the Schwarzschild metric. The following different perturbations are carried out separately: 1) Non-rotating 2-spheres are added along a plane curve slightly deviated from the ``Schwarzschild line''; 2) General non-rotating topological 2-spheres are added along the ``Schwarzschild line'' 3) Slow-rotating 2-spheres are added along the ``Schwarzschild line''. For (1), we obtain the first order vacuum solution and show that no higher order s…
The quantum behaviour of weak gravitational fields admits an adequate, albeit approximate, description by those graviton states in which the expectation values and fluctuations of the linearised gravitational field are small. Such states must approximate corresponding states in full quantum gravity. We analyse the nature of this approximation for the graviton vacuum state in the context of kinematical Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) wherein the constraints are ignored. We identify the graviton vacuum state with kinematically non-normalizable, distributional states in LQG by demanding that relations…
We consider the quantum mechanics of Einstein gravity linearised about flat spacetime. The two transverse-traceless components of the metric perturbation are the true physical degrees of freedom. They appear in the quantum theory as free quantum fields. Like the full Einstein action, the Euclidean action for linearised gravity is unbounded below. It is therefore not possible to use that action to represent the ground state wave function as a Euclidian functional integral over exp{[-(action) /\hbar]}. However, it is possible to represent the ground state as a Euclidian integral over the (depara…
This paper establishes a mathematical proof of the blue-shift instability at the sub-extremal Kerr Cauchy horizon for the linearised vacuum Einstein equations. More precisely, we exhibit conditions on the $s=+2$ Teukolsky field, consisting of suitable integrated upper and lower bounds on the decay along the event horizon, that ensure that the Teukolsky field, with respect to a frame that is regular at the Cauchy horizon, becomes singular. The conditions are in particular satisfied by solutions of the Teukolsky equation arising from generic and compactly supported initial data by the recent wor…
We study the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the static vacuum Einstein equations in bounded domains, satisfying the Bartnik boundary conditions of prescribed metric and mean curvature on the boundary.
In this work, we study linearised gravitational fields on the entire Minkowski space-time including space-like infinity. The generalised conformal field equations linearised about a Minkowski background are utilised for this purpose. In principle, this conformal representation of Einstein's equations can be used to carry out global simulations of Minkowski space-time. We investigate thoroughly this possibility.
We find the equations of motion of membranes dual to the black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity to leading order in 1/D in the large D regime. We also find the metric solutions to the EGB equations to first subleading order in 1/D in terms of membrane variables. We propose a world volume stress tensor for the membrane whose conservation equations are equivalent to the leading order membrane equations. We also work out the light quasi-normal mode spectrum of static black holes in EGB gravity from the linearised fluctuations of static, round membranes. Also, the effective equations f…
We study solutions to the static vacuum Einstein equations on exterior domains with prescribed metric and mean curvature on the inner boundary. It is proved that for any such boundary data near the standard round boundary data in Euclidean space, there exists a unique AF solution to the static vacuum equations realizing the boundary data, which is close to the standard flat solution.
We propose a new geometric framework to address the stability of the Kerr solution to gravitational perturbations in the full sub-extremal range $|a|<M$. Central to our framework is a new formulation of nonlinear gravitational perturbations of Kerr, whose two novel ingredients are the choice of a geometric gauge and non-integrable null frames both tailored to the outgoing principal null geodesics of Kerr. The vacuum Einstein equations for the perturbations are formulated in our gauge as a system of equations for the connection coefficients and curvature components relative to the chosen frames…
It is proved that the only geodesically complete stationary vacuum solution of the Einstein equations is the empty Minkowski space, or a quotient of it by a discrete group of isometries, generalizing a classical result of Lichnerowicz. In addition, we obtain an apriori bound on the curvature of stationary vacuum solutions away from the boundary or horizon.
We show that a set of conformally invariant equations derived from the Fefferman-Graham tensor can be used to construct global solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations, in all even dimensions. This gives, in particular, a new, simple proof of Friedrich's result on the future hyperboloidal stability of Minkowski space-time, and extends its validity to even dimensions.
We analyse the issue of uniqueness of solutions of the static vacuum Einstein equations with prescribed geometric or Bartnik boundary data. Large classes of examples are constructed where uniqueness fails. We then discuss the implications of this behavior for the Bartnik quasi-local mass. A variational characterization of Bartnik boundary data is also given.
Given asymptotically flat initial data on M^3 for the vacuum Einstein field equation, and given a bounded domain in M, we construct solutions of the vacuum constraint equations which agree with the original data inside the given domain, and are identical to that of a suitable Kerr slice (or identical to a member of some other admissible family of solutions) outside a large ball in a given end. The data for which this construction works is shown to be dense in an appropriate topology on the space of asymptotically flat solutions of the vacuum constraints. This construction generalizes work of t…
We prove that given any smooth metric $γ$ and smooth positive function $H$ on $S^{2}$, there is a constant $λ> 0$, depending on $(γ, H)$, and an asymptotically flat solution $(M, g, u)$ of the static vacuum Einstein equations on $M = {\mathbb R}^{3} \setminus B^{3}$, such that the induced metric and mean curvature of $(M, g, u)$ at $\partial M$ are given by $(γ, λH)$. This gives a partial resolution of a conjecture of Bartnik.
We prove in this paper the linear stability of the celebrated Schwarzschild family of black holes in general relativity: Solutions to the linearisation of the Einstein vacuum equations around a Schwarzschild metric arising from regular initial data remain globally bounded on the black hole exterior and in fact decay to a linearised Kerr metric. We express the equations in a suitable double null gauge. To obtain decay, one must in fact add a residual pure gauge solution which we prove to be itself quantitatively controlled from initial data. Our result a fortiori includes decay statements for g…
We extend the conformal gluing construction of Isenberg-Mazzeo-Pollack [18] by establishing an analogous gluing result for field theories obtained by minimally coupling Einstein's gravitational theory with matter fields. We treat classical fields such as perfect fluids and the Yang-Mills equations as well as the Einstein-Vlasov system, which is an important example coming from kinetic theory. In carrying out these extensions, we extend the conformal gluing technique to higher dimensions and codify it in such a way as to make more transparent where it can, and can not, be applied. In particular…
A reformulation of the Schwarzschild solution of the linearised Einstein field equations in post-Riemannian Finsler spacetime is derived. The solution is constructed in three stages: the exterior solution, the event-horizon solution and the interior solution. It is shown that the exterior solution is asymptotically similar to Newtonian gravity at large distances implying that Newtonian gravity is a low energy approximation of the solution. Application of Eddington-Finklestein coordinates is shown to reproduce the results obtained from standard general relativity at the event horizon. Further a…
A complete characterization is obtained of the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the static vacuum Einstein equations which have a (pseudo)-compact horizon or boundary and are complete away from the boundary. It is proved that the time-symmetric space-like hypersurface has only finitely many ends, each of which is either asymptotically flat (AF) or parabolic, as in the (static) Kasner metric. Examples are given with both types of behavior, together with an extensive discussion and new characterization of Weyl metrics. The asymptotics result allows one in most circumstances to drop the AF ass…
Standard methods in non-linear analysis are used to show that there exists a parabolic branching of solutions of the Lichnerowicz-York equation with an unscaled source. We also apply these methods to the extended conformal thin sandwich formulation and show that if the linearised system develops a kernel solution for sufficiently large initial data then we obtain parabolic solution curves for the conformal factor, lapse and shift identical to those found numerically by Pfeiffer and York. The implications of these results for constrained evolutions are discussed.
In this paper, we consider very rough solutions to Cauchy problem for the Einstein vacuum equations in CMC spacial harmonic gauge, and obtain the local well-posedness result in $H^s, s>2$. The novelty of our approach lies in that, without resorting to the standard paradifferential regularization over the rough, Einstein metric $\bg$, we manage to implement the commuting vector field approach to prove Strichartz estimate for geometric wave equation $\Box_\bg ϕ=0$ directly.
Viewing Einstein's theory as the gauge theory of Lorentz group, we construct the most general vacuum connections which have vanishing curvature tensor and show that the vacuum space-time can be classified by the knot topology $π_3(S^3)\simeq π_3(S^2)$ of $π_3(SO(3,1))$. With this we obtain the gauge independent vacuum decomposition of Einstein's theory to the vacuum and gauge covariant physical parts. We discuss the physical implications of our result in quantum gravity.
In this article, we give nonexistence and nonuniqueness results for the vacuum Einstein conformal constraint equations in the far-from-CMC case and also show that in some cases the equations of the conformal method for positive Yamabe metrics and with TT-tensor $σ$ = 0 have a non-trivial solution, and thus answer a question by D. Maxwell.
Let $\M_*=\cup_{t\in [t_0, t_*)} Σ_t$ be a part of vacuum globally hyperbolic space-time $(\bM, \bg)$, foliated by constant mean curvature hypersurfaces $Σ_t$ with $t_0<t_*<0$. We show that the foliation can be extended beyond $t_*$ if the second fundamental form $k$ and the lapse function $n$ satisfy $$ \int_{t_0}^{t_*}(\|k\|_{L^\infty(Σ_t)}+\|\nab \log n\|_{L^\infty(Σ_t)}) dt <\infty. $$ This improves the existing breakdown criteria for Einstein vacuum equations.
In this note we examine some recently proposed solutions of the linearized vacuum Einstein equations. We show that such solutions are {\it not} symmetries of the Einstein equations, because of a crucial integrability condition.

We give a sufficient condition, with no restrictions on the mean curvature, under which the conformal method can be used to generate solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations on compact manifolds. The condition requires a so-called global supersolution but does not require a global subsolution. As a consequence, we construct a class of solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations with freely specified mean curvature, extending a recent result of Holst, Nagy, and Tsogtgerel [HNT07] which constructed similar solutions in the presence of matter. We give a second proof of this…
We prove that the $TT$-gauge-fixed linearised Einstein operator is non-degenerate for Riemannian Kottler ("Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter") metrics with dimension- and topology-dependent ranges of mass parameter. We provide evidence that this remains true for all such metrics except the spherical ones with a critical mass.
We take a step towards characterising stationary data for the vacuum Einstein equations, by finding a necessary condition on initial data for which the evolution is a solution of the vacuum equations admitting a Killing vector, which is time-like at least in some region of the Cauchy development.
In this paper we continue earlier investigations of evolutionary formulations of the Einstein vacuum constraint equations originally introduced by Rácz. Motivated by the strong evidence from these works that the resulting vacuum initial data sets are generically not asymptotically flat we analyse the asymptotics of the solutions of a modified formulation by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. We conclude that the vacuum initial data sets generated with this new formulation are generically asymptotically flat.
We develop a correspondence between arbitrary tensors and matrices based on the use of Kronecker products and associated identities. Utilizing the rules of matrix differentiation we derive the vacuum Einstein field equations as a differential-matrix equation. This formulation may facilitate their efficient use in numerical relativistic models.
We construct solutions to the constraint equations in general relativity using the limit equation criterion introduced by Dahl, Humbert and the first author. We focus on solutions over compact 3-manifolds admitting a $\bS^1$-symmetry group. When the quotient manifold has genus greater than 2, we obtain strong far from CMC results.
We discuss the issue of radiation extraction in asymptotically flat space-times within the framework of conformal methods for numerical relativity. Our aim is to show that there exists a well defined and accurate extraction procedure which mimics the physical measurement process. It operates entirely intrisically within $\scri^+$ so that there is no further approximation necessary apart from the basic assumption that the arena be an asymptotically flat space-time. We define the notion of a detector at infinity by idealising local observers in Minkowski space. A detailed discussion is presented…
The gravitational fields of vacuumless global and gauge strings have been investigated in the context of Einstein Cartan theory under the weak field assumption of the field equations. It has been shown that global string and gauge string can have only repulsive gravitational effect on a test particle.
We determine the electrostatic self-force at rest in an arbitrary static metric with cylindrical symmetry in the linear approximation in the Newtonian constant. In linearised Einstein theory, we express it in terms of the components of the energy-momentum tensor.
A closed explicit representation of the vacuum Einstein equations in terms of components of curvature 2-forms is given. The discussion is restricted to the case of non-vanishing cubic invariant of conformal curvature spinor. The complete set of algebraic and differential identities connecting particular equations is presented and their consistency conditions are analyzed.
Considering the spin-coefficient version of the left-flat vacuum Einstein equations, all but one of the fifty equations can be explicitly integrated via the introduction of five spin-weight s=-2 complex potentials. The final equation is a non-linear wave equation for the last of the potentials. Solutions to this equation determine solutions for the entire system. Solutions for several special cases are obtained
By an argument similar to that of Gibbons and Stewart, but in a different coordinate system and less restrictive gauge, we show that any weakly-asymptotically-simple, analytic vacuum or electrovacuum solutions of the Einstein equations which are periodic in time are necessarily stationary.
Five-dimensional relativity as an extension of general relativity has field equations that simplify considerably given the adoption of a new gauge. The result is a scalar field governed by the Klein-Gordon equation, in an empty spacetime with a cosmological constant governed by Einstein's equations. The main application is to the properties of massive particles in a vacuum-dominated universe.
