We give a sufficient condition, with no restrictions on the mean curvature, under which the conformal method can be used to generate solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations on compact manifolds. The condition requires a so-called global supersolution but does not require a global subsolution. As a consequence, we construct a class of solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations with freely specified mean curvature, extending a recent result of Holst, Nagy, and Tsogtgerel [HNT07] which constructed similar solutions in the presence of matter. We give a second proof of this result showing that vacuum solutions can be obtained as a limit of [HNT07] non-vacuum solutions. Our principal existence theorem is of independent interest in the near-CMC case, where it simplifies previously known hypotheses required for existence.
The structure of quantum vacuum in presence of gravity, and the corresponding vacuum energy density $ρ_{v}$, is expected to depend on the coupling between the UV scale $\ell_\mathrm{\textsf{UV}}$ and spacetime curvature. We determine this coupling in an arbitrary freely falling frame characterised by it's geodesic tangent $U^i(τ)$. We show that local vacuum modes within a small causal diamond based on $U^i(τ)$, whose size is set by wavelength of the modes, generically give a contribution $ρ_{0}$ to $ρ_v$ which, to leading order, scales as: $ρ_{0} = \left( π\hbar c/2 \right) {\mathrm{\textsf R}…
We express the complex potential E and the metrical fields omega and gamma of all stationary axisymmetric vacuum spacetimes that result from the application of two successive quadruple-Neugebauer (or two double-Harrison) transformations to Minkowski space in terms of data specified on the symmetry axis, which are in turn easily expressed in terms of multipole moments. Moreover, we suggest how, in future papers, we shall apply our approach to do the same thing for those vacuum solutions that arise from the application of more than two successive transformations, and for those electrovac solutio…
We derive an expression for effective gravitational mass for any closed spacelike 2-surface. This effective gravitational energy is defined directly through the geometrical quantity of the freely falling 2-surface and thus is well adapted to intuitive expectation that the gravitational mass should be determined by the motion of test body moving freely in gravitational field. We find that this effective gravitational mass has reasonable positive value for a small sphere in the non-vacuum space-times and can be negative for vacuum case. Further, this effective gravitational energy is compared wi…
This article is dedicated to solving the Einstein constraint equations with apparent horizon boundaries and freely specified mean curvature. The main novelty is that we study the conformal constraint equations assuming only low regularity.
An atom falling freely into a Kerr black hole in a Boulware-like vacuum is shown to emit radiation with a Planck spectrum at the Hawking temperature. For a cloud of falling atoms with random initial times, the radiation is thermal. The existence of this radiation is due to the acceleration of the vacuum field modes with respect to the falling atom. Its properties can be traced to the dominant role of conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) in the neighborhood of the event horizon. We display this effect for a scalar field, though the acceleration radiation has a universal conformal behavior that is …
No, it cannot in the following sense if a self-gravitating vacuum brane is concerned. Once we write down the full set of linear perturbation equations of the system containing a self-gravitating brane, we will see that such a brane does not have its own dynamical degrees of freedom independent of those of gravitational waves which propagate in the surrounding spacetime. This statement seems to contradict with our intuition that a brane fluctuates freely on a given background spacetime in the lowest order approximation. Based on this intuition, we usually think that the dynamics of a brane can …
We consider, in de Sitter spacetime, both freely falling and static two-level atoms in interaction with a conformally coupled massless scalar field in the de Sitter-invariant vacuum, and separately calculate the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the atom's spontaneous excitation rate. We find that spontaneous excitations occur even for the freely falling atom as if there is a thermal bath of radiation at the Gibbons-Hawking temperature and we thus recover, in a different physical context, the results of Gibbons and Hawking that reveals the thermal nature of de Sitt…
A new technique is presented for modifying the Einstein evolution equations off the constraint hypersurface. With this approach the evolution equations for the constraints can be specified freely. The equations of motion for the gravitational field variables are modified by the addition of terms that are linear and nonlocal in the constraints. These terms are obtained from solutions of the linearized Einstein constraints.
This paper studies diagonal spacetime metrics. It is shown that the overdetermined Einstein vacuum equations are compatible if one Killing vector exists. The stability of plane gravitational waves of the Robinson type is studied. This stability problem bares a fantastic mathematical resemblance to the stability of the Schwarzschild black hole studied by Regge and Wheeler. Just like for the Schwarzschild black hole, the Robinson gravitational waves are proven to be stable with respect to small perturbations. We conjecture that a bigger class of vacuum solutions are stable, among which are all g…
In the presence of a short-distance cutoff, the choice of a vacuum state in an inflating, non-de Sitter universe is unavoidably ambiguous. The ambiguity is related to the time at which initial conditions for the mode functions are specified and to the way the expansion of the universe affects those initial conditions. In this paper we study the imprint of these uncertainties on the predictions of inflation. We parametrize the most general set of possible vacuum initial conditions by two phenomenological variables. We find that the generated power spectrum receives oscillatory corrections whose…
We address the question how to adapt cosmological constant $Λ$ for description of a vacuum dark energy density jumping from the big initial value to the small today value suggested by observations. We find such a possibility in the gauge-noninvariance of quantum cosmology which leads to a connection between a choice of the gauge and quantum spectrum for a certain physical quantity which can be specified in the framework of the minisuperspace model. We introduce a particular gauge in which the cosmological constant $Λ$ is quantized and show that making a measurement of $Λ$ today one can find it…
This is the second paper in a series of papers adressing the characteristic gluing problem for the Einstein vacuum equations. We solve the codimension-$10$ characteristic gluing problem for characteristic data which are close to the Minkowski data. We derive an infinite-dimensional space of gauge-dependent charges and a $10$-dimensional space of gauge-invariant charges that are conserved by the linearized null constraint equations and act as obstructions to the gluing problem. The gauge-dependent charges can be matched by applying angular and transversal gauge transformations of the characteri…
Studies of new hyperbolic systems for the Einstein evolution equations show that the ``slicing density'' $α(t,x)$ can be freely specified while the lapse $N = αg^{1/2}$ cannot. Implementation of this small change in the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner action principle leads to canonical equations that agree with the Einstein equations whether or not the constraints are satisfied. The constraint functions, independently of their values, then propagate according to a first order symmetric hyperbolic system whose characteristic cone is the light cone. This result follows from the twice-contracted Bianchi i…
We study the vacuum polarization of a massive scalar field $ϕ$ with arbitrary coupling to gravity in pointlike global monopole spacetime. Using Schwinger-DeWitt proper time formalism, we calculate the vacuum expectation value $<ϕ^{2}>$, when the Compton length of the quantum field is much less than the characteristic radius of the curvature of the background geometry, and we can ignore nonlocal contributions. Explicit analytic expressions are obtained for a general curvature coupling parameter, and specified to the more physical cases of minimal and conformal coupling. Comparing the leading te…
Hamiltonian time evolution in terms of an explicit parameter time is derived for general relativity, even when the constraints are not satisfied, from the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner-Teitelboim-Ashtekar action in which the slicing density $α(x,t)$ is freely specified while the lapse $N=αg^{1/2}$ is not. The constraint ``algebra'' becomes a well-posed evolution system for the constraints; this system is the twice-contracted Bianchi identity when $R_{ij}=0$. The Hamiltonian constraint is an initial value constraint which determines $g^{1/2}$ and hence $N$, given $α$.
Given a collection of N solutions of the (3+1) vacuum Einstein constraint equations which are asymptotically Euclidean, we show how to construct a new solution of the constraints which is itself asymptotically Euclidean, and which contains specified sub-regions of each of the N given solutions. This generalizes earlier work which handled the time-symmetric case, thus providing a construction of large classes of initial data for the many body problem in general relativity.
The imposition of a constraint between the metric tensor elements in both three- and four-dimensional, rotating AdS space-times is shown to reduce the number of independent equations of motion and to result in new families of solutions to the equations of motion. For the geometries investigated analytic solutions or partial analytic solutions of the equations of motion are obtained. In all cases the number of independent field equations is less than the number of independent functions, resulting in an undetermined function which can be freely specified. For rotating, asymptotically $AdS$ space…
We study the initial value problem for the conformal field equations with data given on a cone ${\cal N}_p$ with vertex $p$ so that in a suitable conformal extension the point $p$ will represent past time-like infinity $i^-$, the set ${\cal N}_p \setminus \{p\}$ will represent past null infinity ${\cal J}^-$, and the freely prescribed (suitably smooth) data will acquire the meaning of the incoming {\it radiation field} for the prospective vacuum space-time. It is shown that: (i) On some coordinate neighbourhood of $p$ there exist smooth fields which satisfy the conformal vacuum field equations…
Generalising an analysis of Corvino and Schoen, we study surjectivity properties of the constraint map in general relativity in a large class of weighted Sobolev spaces. As a corollary we prove several perturbation, gluing, and extension results: we show existence of non-trivial, singularity-free, vacuum space-times which are stationary in a neighborhood of $i^0$; for small perturbations of parity-covariant initial data sufficiently close to those for Minkowski space-time this leads to space-times with a smooth global Scri; we prove existence of initial data for many black holes which are exac…
Black holes with hair represented by generic fields surrounding the central source of the vacuum Schwarzschild metric are examined under the minimal set of requirements consisting of i) the existence of a well defined event horizon and ii) the strong or dominant energy condition for the hair outside the horizon. We develop our analysis by means of the gravitational decoupling approach. We find that trivial deformations of the seed Schwarzschild vacuum preserve the energy conditions and provide a new mechanism to evade the no-hair theorem based on a primary hair associated with the charge gener…
The regular finite initial value problem at infinity is used to obtain regularity conditions on the freely specifiable parts of initial data for the vacuum Einstein equations with non-vanishing second fundamental form. These conditions ensure that the solutions of the propagation equations implied by the conformal Einstein equations at the cylinder at spatial infinity extend smoothly (and in fact analytically) through the critical sets where spatial infinity touches null infinity. In order to ease the analysis the conformal metric is assumed to be analytic, although the results presented here …
We present a family of spherically symmetric spacetimes, specified by the density profile of a vacuum dark energy, which have the same global structure as the de Sitter spacetime but the reduced symmetry which leads to a time-evolving and spatially inhomogeneous cosmological term. It connects smoothly two de Sitter vacua with different values of cosmological constant and corresponds to anisotropic vacuum dark fluid defined by symmetry of its stress-energy tensor which is invariant under the radial boosts. This family contains a special class distinguished by dynamics of evaporation of a cosmol…
In a previous paper, we considered the motion of massive spinning test particles in the "pole-dipole" approximation, as described by the Mathisson--Papapetrou--Dixon (MPD) equations, and examined its properties in dependence on the spin supplementary condition. We decomposed the equations in the orthonormal tetrad based on the time-like vector fixing the spin condition and on the corresponding spin, while representing the curvature in terms of the Weyl scalars obtained in the Newman--Penrose (NP) null tetrad naturally associated with the orthonormal one; the projections thus obtained did not c…
