The regular finite initial value problem at infinity is used to obtain regularity conditions on the freely specifiable parts of initial data for the vacuum Einstein equations with non-vanishing second fundamental form. These conditions ensure that the solutions of the propagation equations implied by the conformal Einstein equations at the cylinder at spatial infinity extend smoothly (and in fact analytically) through the critical sets where spatial infinity touches null infinity. In order to ease the analysis the conformal metric is assumed to be analytic, although the results presented here could be generalised to a setting where the conformal metric is only smooth. The analysis given here is a generalisation of the analysis on the regular finite initial value problem first carried out by Friedrich, for initial data sets with non-vanishing second fundamental form.
We prove the existence of a large class of asymptotically flat initial data with non-vanishing mass and angular momentum for which the metric and the extrinsic curvature have asymptotic expansions at space-like infinity in terms of powers of a radial coordinate.
Linear zero-rest-mass fields generically develop logarithmic singularities at the critical sets where spatial infinity meets null infinity. Friedrich's representation of spatial infinity is ideally suited to study this phenomenon. These logarithmic singularities are an obstruction to the smoothness of the zero-rest-mass field at null infinity and, in particular, to peeling. In the case of the spin-2 field it has been shown that these logarithmic singularities can be precluded if the initial data for the field satisfies a certain regularity condition involving the vanishing, at spatial infinity…
It is argued that the symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in 4 dimensions should be taken as the semi-direct sum of supertranslations with infinitesimal local conformal transformations and not, as usually done, with the Lorentz algebra. As a consequence, two dimensional conformal field theory techniques will play as fundamental a role in this context of direct physical interest as they do in three dimensional anti-de Sitter gravity.
Hamada and Shiu have recently shown that tree level amplitudes in QED satisfy an infinite hierarchy of soft photon theorems, the first two of which are Weinberg and Low's theorems respectively. In this paper we propose that in tree level massless QED, this entire hierarchy is equivalent to a hierarchy of (asymptotic) conservation laws. We prove the equivalence explicitly for the case of sub-subleading soft photon theorem and give substantial evidence that the equivalence continues to hold for the entire hierarchy. Our work also brings out the (complimentary) relationship between the asymptotic…
When Einstein's equations for an asymptotically flat, vacuum spacetime are reexpressed in terms of an appropriate conformal metric that is regular at (future) null infinity, they develop apparently singular terms in the associated conformal factor and thus appear to be ill-behaved at this (exterior) boundary. In this article however we show, through an enforcement of the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints to the needed order in a Taylor expansion, that these apparently singular terms are not only regular at the boundary but can in fact be explicitly evaluated there in terms of conformally re…
A study of the linearised gravitational field (spin 2 zero-rest-mass field) on a Minkowski background close to spatial infinity is done. To this purpose, a certain representation of spatial infinity in which it is depicted as a cylinder is used. A first analysis shows that the solutions generically develop a particular type of logarithmic divergence at the sets where spatial infinity touches null infinity. A regularity condition on the initial data can be deduced from the analysis of some transport equations on the cylinder at spatial infinity. It is given in terms of the linearised version of…
We extend Penrose's peeling model for the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the scalar wave equation at null infinity on asymptotically flat backgrounds, which is well understood for flat space-time, to Schwarzschild and the asymptotically simple space-times of Corvino-Schoen/Chrusciel-Delay. We combine conformal techniques and vector field methods: a naive adaptation of the ``Morawetz vector field'' to a conformal rescaling of the Schwarzschild metric yields a complete scattering theory on Corvino-Schoen/Chrusciel-Delay space-times. A good classification of solutions that peel arises from …
We present a simple domain decomposition code based on the Galerkin-Collocation method to integrate the field equations of the Bondi problem. The algorithm is stable, exhibits exponential convergence when considering the Bondi formula as an error measure, and is computationally economical. We have incorporated features of both Galerkin and Collocation methods along with the establishment of two non-overlapping subdomains. We have further applied the code to show the decay of the Bondi mass in the nonlinear regime and its power-law late time decay. Another application is the determination of th…
The article aims to analyze a construction of charges (conserved quantities) for the gravity field in the (3+1) decomposition. The construction is based on (3+1) splitting of conformal Yano--Killing (CYK) two-form. The splitting leads to charges, defined on Cauchy surface, which are combined from components of Weyl tensor and conformal Killing vector. The relations between the conserved quantities and its classical ADM counterparts are revisited. Asymptotic behavior of the conserved quantities is described. The charges are analyzed for a particular choice of initial data, among others, Bowen -…
We solve, numerically, the massless spin-2 equations, written in terms of a gauge based on the properties of conformal geodesics, in a neighbourhood of spatial infinity using spectral methods in both space and time. This strategy allows us to compute the solutions to these equations up to the critical sets where null infinity intersects with spatial infinity. Moreover, we use the convergence rates of the numerical solutions to read-off their regularity properties.
We study the peeling for the wave equation on the Vaidya spacetime following the approach developed by Mason and Nicolas in Mason-Nicolas 2009. The idea is to encode the regularity at null infinity of the rescaled field, characterised by Sobolev-type norms, in terms of corresponding function spaces of initial data. All function spaces are obtained from energy fluxes associated with an observer constructed from the Morawetz vector field on Minkowski spacetime. We combine conformal techniques and energy estimates to obtain the optimal classes of initial data ensuring a given regularity of the re…
We propose that the late-time tail problem in the Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetime is dual to a tail problem in the Schwarzschild spacetime with a different initial data set: at a fixed observation point the asymptotic decay rate of the fields are equal. This duality is used to find the decay rate for tails in RN. This decay rate is exactly as in Schwarzschild, including the case of the extremely-charged RN spacetime (ERN). The only case where any deviation from the Schwarzschild decay rate is found is the case of the tails along the event horizon of an ERN spacetime, where the decay rate is …
We study the state-counting problem that arises in the SU(2) black hole entropy calculation in loop quantum gravity. More precisely, we compute the leading term and the logarithmic correction of both the spherically symmetric and the distorted SU(2) black holes. Contrary to what has been done in previous works, we have to take into account "quantum corrections" in our framework in the sense that the level k of the Chern-Simons theory which describes the black hole is finite and not sent to infinity. Therefore, the new results presented here allow for the computation of the entropy in models wh…
In this paper we define the radiation field for the wave equation on the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. In this context it has two components: the rescaled restriction of the time derivative of a solution to null infinity and to the event horizon. In the process, we establish some regularity properties of solutions of the wave equation on the spacetime. In particular, we prove that the regularity of the solution across the event horizon and across null infinity is determined by the regularity and decay rate of the initial data at the event horizon and at infinity. We also show that the ra…
We study Cauchy initial data for asymptotically flat, stationary vacuum space-times near space-like infinity. The fall-off behavior of the intrinsic metric and the extrinsic curvature is characterized. We prove that they have an analytic expansion in powers of a radial coordinate. The coefficients of the expansion are analytic functions of the angles. This result allow us to fill a gap in the proof found in the literature of the statement that all asymptotically flat, vacuum stationary space-times admit an analytic compactification at null infinity. Stationary initial data are physical importa…
We show that the BMS-supertranslations and their associated supermomenta on past null infinity can be related to those on future null infinity, proving the conjecture of Strominger for a class of spacetimes which are asymptotically-flat in the sense of Ashtekar and Hansen. Using a cylindrical 3-manifold of both null and spatial directions of approach towards spatial infinity, we impose appropriate regularity conditions on the Weyl tensor near spatial infinity along null directions. The asymptotic Einstein equations on this 3-manifold and the regularity conditions imply that the relevant Weyl t…
We study the peeling of Dirac and Maxwell fields on a Schwarzschild background following the approach developed by the authors in Mason-Nicolas 2009 for the wave equation. The method combines a conformal compactification with vector field techniques in order to work out the optimal space of initial data for a given transverse regularity of the rescaled field across null infinity. The results show that analogous decay and regularity assumptions in Minkowski and in Schwarzschild produce the same regularity across null infinity. The results are valid also for the classes of asymptotically simple …
On any asymptotically-flat spacetime, we show that the asymptotic symmetries and charges of Maxwell fields on past null infinity can be related to those on future null infinity as recently proposed by Strominger. We extend the covariant formalism of Ashtekar and Hansen by constructing a 3-manifold of both null and spatial directions of approach to spatial infinity. This allows us to systematically impose appropriate regularity conditions on the Maxwell fields near spatial infinity along null directions. The Maxwell equations on this 3-manifold and the regularity conditions imply that the relev…
We prove propagation of weighted Sobolev regularity for solutions of the hyperboloidal Cauchy problem for a class of quasi-linear symmetric hyperbolic systems, under structure conditions compatible with the Einstein-Maxwell equations in space-time dimensions $n+1\ge 7$. Similarly we prove propagation of polyhomogeneity in dimensions $n+1\ge 9$. As a byproduct we obtain, in those last dimensions, polyhomogeneity at null infinity of small data solutions of vacuum Einstein, or Einstein-Maxwell equations evolving out of initial data which are stationary outside of a ball.
The canonical generator $G$ of local symmetries in Poincaré gauge theory is constructed as an integral over a spatial section $Σ$ of spacetime. Its regularity (differentiability) on the phase space is ensured by adding a suitable surface term, an integral over the boundary of $Σ$ at infinity, which represents the asymptotic canonical charge. For black hole solutions, $Σ$ has two boundaries, one at infinity and the other at horizon. It is shown that the canonical charge at horizon defines entropy, whereas the regularity of $G$ implies the first law of black hole thermodynamics.
We use fully nonlinear numerical relativity techniques to study high energy head-on collision of nonspinning, equal-mass black holes to estimate the maximum gravitational radiation emitted by these systems. Our simulations include improvements in the construction of initial data, subsequent full numerical evolutions, and the computation of waveforms at infinity. The new initial data significantly reduces the spurious radiation content, allowing for initial speeds much closer to the speed of light, i.e. $v\sim0.99c$. Using these new techniques, We estimate the maximum radiated energy from head-…
We make use of Friedrich's representation of spatial infinity to study asymptotic expansions of the Maxwell-scalar field system near spatial infinity. The main objective of this analysis is to understand the effects of the non-linearities of this system on the regularity of solutions and polyhomogeneous expansions at null infinity and, in particular, at the critical sets where null infinity touches spatial infinity. The main outcome from our analysis is that the nonlinear interaction makes both fields more singular at the conformal boundary than what is seen when the fields are non-interacting…
The problem of kink stability of isothermal spherical self-similar flow in newtonian gravity is revisited. Using distribution theory we first develop a general formula of perturbations, linear or non-linear, which consists of three sets of differential equations, one in each side of the sonic line and the other along it. By solving the equations along the sonic line we find explicitly the spectrum, $k$, of the perturbations, whereby we obtain the stability criterion for the self-similar solutions. When the solutions are smoothly across the sonic line, our results reduce to those of Ori and Pir…
