In 2013, Masson and Siljander determined a method to prove that the $p$-minimal upper gradient $g_{f_\varepsilon}$ for the time mollification $f_\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon>0$, of a parabolic Newton-Sobolev function $f\in L^p_\mathrm{loc}(0,τ;N^{1,p}_\mathrm{loc}(Ω))$, with $τ>0$ and $Ω$ open domain in a doubling metric measure space $(\mathbb{X},d,μ)$ supporting a weak $(1,p)$-Poincaré inequality, $p\in(1,\infty)$, is such that $g_{f-f_\varepsilon}\to0$ as $\varepsilon\to0$ in $L^p_\mathrm{loc}(Ω_τ)$, $Ω_τ$ being the parabolic cylinder $Ω_τ:=Ω\times(0,τ)$. Their approach involved the use of Cheeger's differential structure, and therefore exhibited some limitations; here, we shall see that the definition and the formal properties of the parabolic Sobolev spaces themselves allow to find a more direct method to show such convergence, which relies on $p$-weak upper gradients only and which is valid regardless of structural assumptions on the ambient space, also in the limiting case when $p=1$.
We consider the Cauchy problem of a class of higher order Schrödinger type equations with constant coefficients. By employing the energy inequality, we show the $L^2$ well-posedness, the parabolic smoothing and a breakdown of the persistence of regularity. We classify this class of equations into three types on the basis of their smoothing property.
We study a semilinear parabolic equation that possesses global bounded weak solutions whose gradient has a singularity in the interior of the domain for all $t>0$. The singularity of these solutions is of the same type as the singularity of a stationary solution to which they converge as $t\to\infty$.
We study the initial value problem of fully nonlinear third-order equations on the torus. Under some conditions on the nonlinearity and the data, we prove that the equation behaves like a parabolic one: there exists a unique local solution in one direction of time that is infinitely smooth and the problem in not well-posed in the other direction. Under other conditions on the nonlinearity and the data, we prove that the equation behaves like a dispersive one: there exists a unique local solution in both directions of time.
Parabolic smoothing effect and local well-posedness of fifth order semilinear dispersive equations on the torus
Variational inequalities, formulated on unknown dependent convex sets, are called quasi-variational inequalities (QVI). This paper is concerned with the abstract approach to a class of parabolic QVIs arising in many biochemical/mechanical problems, based on a compactness theorem for parabolic variational inequalities (cf. [9]). The prototype of our model for QVIs of parabolic type is formulated in a reflexive Banach space as the sum of the time-derivative operator under unknown convex constraints and a semimonotone operator, including a feedback system which selects a convex constraint. The ma…
In this paper we consider second order parabolic partial differential equations subject to the Dirichlet boundary condition on smooth domains. We establish weighted $L_{q}$-maximal regularity in weighted Triebel-Lizorkin spaces for such parabolic problems with inhomogeneous boundary data. The weights that we consider are power weights in time and space, and yield flexibility in the optimal regularity of the initial-boundary data, allow to avoid compatibility conditions at the boundary and provide a smoothing effect. In particular, we can treat rough inhomogeneous boundary data.
This work aims to provide a comprehensive and unified numerical analysis for non linear system of parabolic variational inequalities (PVIs) subject to Dirichlet boundary condition. This analysis enables us to establish an existence of the exact solution to the considered model and to prove the convergence for the approximate solution and its approximate gradient. Our results are applicable for several conforming and non conforming numerical schemes.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a locally finite connected weighted graph, and $Ω$ be an unbounded subset of $V$. Using Rothe's method, we study the existence of solutions for the semilinear heat equation $\partial_tu+|u|^{p-1}\cdot u=Δu~(p\ge1)$ and the parabolic variational inequality \begin{eqnarray*} \int_{Ω^\circ} \partial_tu\cdot(v-u)\,dμ\ge \int_{Ω^\circ}(Δu+f)\cdot(v-u)\,dμ\qquad\mbox{for any }v\in \mathcal{H}, \end{eqnarray*} where $\mathcal{H}=\{u\in W^{1,2}(V):u=0\mbox{ on }V\backslashΩ^\circ\}$.
We consider various versions of the obstacle and thin-obstacle problems, we interpret them as variational inequalities, with non-smooth constraint, and prove that they satisfy a new constrained Lojasiewicz inequality. The difficulty lies in the fact that, since the constraint is non-analytic, the pioneering method of L. Simon (Ann. of Math. 118(3), 1983) does not apply and we have to exploit a better understanding on the constraint itself. We then apply this inequality to two associated problems. First we combine it with an abstract result on parabolic variational inequalities, to prove the co…
In this paper we consider feedback stabilization for parabolic variational inequalities of obstacle type with time and space depending reaction and convection coefficients and show exponential stabilization to nonstationary trajectories. Based on a Moreau-Yosida approximation, a feedback operator is established using a finite (and uniform in the approximation index) number of actuators leading to exponential decay of given rate of the state variable. Several numerical examples are presented addressing smooth and nonsmooth obstacle functions.
We study the partial Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect and the exponential decay for the solutions to evolution equations associated to a class of accretive non-selfadjoint quadratic operators, which fail to be globally hypoelliptic on the whole phase space. By taking advantage of the associated Gevrey regularizing effects, we study the null-controllability of parabolic equations posed on the whole Euclidean space associated to this class of possibly non-globally hypoelliptic quadratic operators. We prove that these parabolic equations are null-controllable in any positive time from thick con…
We prove local boundedness of variational solutions to the double phase equation \begin{align*} \partial_t u +& P.V.\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}\frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{p-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+ps}}\\ &+a(x,y)\frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{q-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+qs'}} \,dy = 0, \end{align*} under the restrictions $s,s'\in (0,1),\, 1 < p \leq q \leq p\,\frac{2s+N}{N}$ and the non-negative function $(x,y)\mapsto a(x,y)$ is assumed to be measurable and bounded.
Spinor fields which are covariantly constant with respect to a connection with flux are of particular interest in unified string theories and supergravity theories, as their existence is required by supersymmetry. In this paper, flows of spinor fields are introduced which are parabolic and whose stationary points are such covariantly constant spinors.
In this paper we study elliptic and parabolic boundary value problems with inhomogeneous boundary conditions in weighted function spaces of Sobolev, Bessel potential, Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin type. As one of the main results, we solve the problem of weighted $L_{q}$-maximal regularity in weighted Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces for the parabolic case, where the spatial weight is a power weight in the Muckenhoupt $A_{\infty}$-class. In Besov space case we have the restriction that the microscopic parameter equals to $q$. Going beyond the $A_{p}$-range, where $p$ is the integrability paramet…
For a class of quasilinear parabolic systems with nonlinear Robin boundary conditions we construct a compact local solution semiflow in a nonlinear phase space of high regularity. We further show that a priori estimates in lower norms are sufficient for the existence of a global attractor in this phase space. The approach relies on maximal $L_p$-regularity with temporal weights for the linearized problem. An inherent smoothing effect due to the weights is employed for gradient estimates. In several applications we can improve the convergence to an attractor by one regularity level.
The Energy-Dissipation Principle provides a variational tool for the analysis of parabolic evolution problems: solutions are characterized as so-called null-minimizers of a global functional on entire trajectories. This variational technique allows for applying the general results of the calculus of variations to the underlying differential problem and has been successfully applied in a variety of deterministic cases, ranging from doubly nonlinear flows to curves of maximal slope in metric spaces. The aim of this note is to extend the Energy-Dissipation Principle to stochastic parabolic evolut…
We introduce function spaces for the treatment of non-linear parabolic equations with variable $\log$-Hölder continuous exponents, which only incorporate information of the symmetric part of a gradient. As an analogue of Korn's inequality for these functions spaces is not available, the construction of an appropriate smoothing method proves itself to be difficult. To this end, we prove a point-wise Poincaré inequality near the boundary of a bounded Lipschitz domain involving only the symmetric gradient. Using this inequality, we construct a smoothing operator with convenient properties. In par…
We consider in this note the semilinear heat system $$\partial_t u = Δu + f(v), \quad \partial_t v = μΔv + g(u), \quad μ> 0,$$ where the nonlinearity has no gradient structure taking of the particular form $$f(v) = v|v|^{p-1} \quad \text{and}\quad g(u) = u|u|^{q-1} \quad \text{with} \quad p, q > 1, $$ or $$f(v) = e^{pv}\quad \text{and} \quad g(u) = e^{qu} \quad \text{with} \quad p,q > 0.$$ We exhibit type I blowup solutions for this system and give a precise description of its blowup profiles. The method relies on two-step procedure: the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one via…
In this paper we deal with parabolic variational inequalities of Navier-Stokes type with time-dependent constraints on velocity fields, including gradient constraint case. One of the objectives of this paper is to propose a weak variational formulation for variational inequalities of Navier-Stokes type and to solve them by applying the compactness theorem, which was recently developed by the authors (cf. [22]). Another objective is to approach to a class of quasi-variational inequalities associated with Stefan/Navier-Stokes problems in which we are taking into account the freezing effect of ma…
This work discusses parabolic Muckenhoupt weights on spaces of homogeneous type, i.e.\ quasi-metric spaces with both a doubling measure and an additional monotone geodesic property. The main results include a characterization in terms of weighted norm inequalities for parabolic maximal operators, a reverse Hölder inequality, and a Jones-type factorization result for this class of weights. The connection between the space of parabolic bounded mean oscillation and parabolic Muckenhoupt weights is studied by applying a parabolic John--Nirenberg lemma. A Coifman--Rochberg-type characterization of …
We propose a semi-discrete numerical scheme and establish well-posedness of a class of parabolic systems. Such systems naturally arise while studying the optimal control of grain boundary motions. The latter is typically described using a set of parabolic variational inequalities. We use a regularization approach to deal with the variational inequality. The resulting optimization problem is a nonsmooth, nonconvex, and nonlinear programming problem. This is a long term project where in the current work we are first analyzing systems of PDEs associated with the regularized optimal control proble…
This paper establishes sharp local regularity estimates for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear parabolic free boundary problems with singular absorption terms. The main difficulties are due to the blow-up of the source along the free boundary and the lack of a variational structure. The proof combines the power of the Ishii-Lions method with intrinsically parabolic oscillation estimates. The results are new, even for second-order linear operators in nondivergence form.
The existence of weak solutions to the obstacle problem for a nonlocal semilinear fourth-order parabolic equation is shown, using its underlying gradient flow structure. The model governs the dynamics of a microelectromechanical system with heterogeneous dielectric properties.
