We review the theory of weakly coupled oscillators for smooth systems. We then examine situations where application of the standard theory falls short and illustrate how it can be extended. Specific examples are given to non-smooth systems with applications to the Izhikevich neuron. We then introduce the idea of isostable reduction to explore behaviors that the weak coupling paradigm cannot explain. In an additional example, we show how bifurcations that change the stability of phase locked solutions in a pair of identical coupled neurons can be understood using the notion of isostable reduction.
Model reduction techniques have been widely used to study the collective behavior of globally coupled oscillators. However, most approaches assume that there are infinitely many oscillators. Here we propose a new ansatz, based on the collective coordinate approach, that reproduces the collective dynamics of the Kuramoto model for finite networks to high accuracy, yields the same bifurcation structure in the thermodynamic limit of infinitely many oscillators as previous approaches, and additionally captures the dynamics of the order parameter in the thermodynamic limit, including critical slowi…
We have investigated synchronized pattern in a network of Thomas oscillators coupled with sinusoidal nonlinear coupling. Pattern like chimera states are not only observed for many non-locally coupled oscillators but there is a signature of it even for locally coupled few oscillators. For certain range of intermediate coupling, clusters are also observed. These patterns do resemble with motion of real self propelled coupled dynamical systems.
We consider the transient behavior of globally coupled systems of identical pulse coupled oscillators. Synchrony develops through an aggregation phenomenon, with clusters of synchronized oscillators forming and growing larger in time. Previous work derived expressions for these time dependent clusters, when each oscillator obeyed a linear charging curve. We generalize these results to cases where the charging curves have nonlinearities
We study under which conditions systems of coupled oscillators on complex networks display remote synchronization, a situation where pairs of vertices, not necessarily physically linked, but with the same network symmetry, are synchronized.
We study a large population of globally coupled phase oscillators subject to common white Gaussian noise and find analytically that the critical coupling strength between oscillators for synchronization transition decreases with an increase in the intensity of common noise. Thus, common noise promotes the onset of synchronization. Our prediction is confirmed by numerical simulations of the phase oscillators as well as of limit-cycle oscillators.
We report erosion of synchronization in networks of coupled phase oscillators, a phenomenon where perfect phase synchronization is unattainable in steady-state, even in the limit of infinite coupling. An analysis reveals that the total erosion is separable into the product of terms characterizing coupling frustration and structural heterogeneity, both of which amplify erosion. The latter, however, can differ significantly from degree heterogeneity. Finally, we show that erosion is marked by the reorganization of oscillators according to their node degrees rather than their natural frequencies.
We study synchronization of oscillators that are indirectly coupled through their interaction with an environment. We give criteria for the stability or instability of a synchronized oscillation. Using these criteria we investigate synchronization of systems of oscillators which are weakly coupled, in the sense that the influence of the oscillators on the environment is weak. We prove that arbitrarily weak coupling will synchronize the oscillators, provided that this coupling is of the 'right' sign. We illustrate our general results by applications to a model of coupled GnRH neuron oscillators…
We explore the phase reduction in networks of coupled oscillators in the higher orders of the coupling parameter. For coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators, where the phase can be introduced explicitly, we develop an analytic perturbation procedure to allow for the obtaining of the higher-order approximation explicitly. We demonstrate this by deriving the second-order phase equations for a network of three Stuart-Landau oscillators. For systems where explicit expressions of the phase are not available, we present a numerical procedure that constructs the phase dynamics equations for a small networ…
We suggest a definition for a type of chimera state that appears in networks of indistinguishable phase oscillators. Defining a "weak chimera" as a type of invariant set showing partial frequency synchronization, we show that this means they cannot appear in phase oscillator networks that are either globally coupled or too small. We exhibit various networks of four, six and ten indistinguishable oscillators where weak chimeras exist with various dynamics and stabilities. We examine the role of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi coupling in giving degenerate (neutrally stable) families of weak chimera states i…
We formulate a reduction theory that describes the response of an oscillator network as a whole to external forcing applied nonuniformly to its constituent oscillators. The phase description of multiple oscillator networks coupled weakly is also developed. General formulae for the collective phase sensitivity and the effective phase coupling between the oscillator networks are found. Our theory is applicable to a wide variety of oscillator networks undergoing frequency synchronization. Any network structure can systematically be treated. A few examples are given to illustrate our theory.
In this paper we discuss recent progress in research of ensembles of mean field coupled oscillators. Without an ambition to present a comprehensive review, we outline most interesting from our viewpoint results and surprises, as well as interrelations between different approaches.
The theoretical description of synchronization phenomena often relies on coupled units of continuous time noisy Markov chains with a small number of states in each unit. It is frequently assumed, either explicitly or implicitly, that coupled discrete-state noisy Markov units can be used to model mathematically more complex coupled noisy continuous phase oscillators. In this work we explore conditions that justify this assumption by coarse-graining continuous phase units. In particular, we determine the minimum number of states necessary to justify this correspondence for Kuramoto-like oscillat…
We propose a coupled system of fast and slow phase oscillators. We observe two-step transitions to quasi-periodic motions by direct numerical simulations of this coupled oscillator system. A low-dimensional equation for order parameters is derived using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz. The applicability of the ansatz is checked by the comparison of numerical results of the coupled oscillator system and the reduced low-dimensional equation. We investigate further several interesting phenomena in which mutual interactions between the fast and slow oscillators play an essential role. Fast oscillations ap…
A rationale is provided for the emergence of synchronization in a system of coupled oscillators in a stick-slip motion. The single oscillator has a limit cycle in a region of the state space for each parameter set beyond the supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The two-oscillator system that has similar weakly coupled oscillators exhibits synchronization in a parameter range. The synchronization has an anti-phase nature for an identical pair. However, it tends to be more in-phase for a non-identical pair with a rather weak coupling. A system of three identical oscillators (1, 2, and 3) coupled in a…
Nontrivial collective behavior may emerge from the interactive dynamics of many oscillatory units. Chimera states are chaotic patterns of spatially localized coherent and incoherent oscillations. The recently-introduced notion of a weak chimera gives a rigorously testable characterization of chimera states for finite-dimensional phase oscillator networks. In this paper we give some persistence results for dynamically invariant sets under perturbations and apply them to coupled populations of phase oscillators with generalized coupling. In contrast to the weak chimeras with nonpositive maximal …
In this article I investigate the novel synchronization behaviors of evolving pulse-coupled oscillator networks. Unlike previous models, the time-varying mechanism is inspired by neural network development, where seldom used links die out while heavily used ones get strengthened. Even small network with all-to-all connected topology can have exotic dynamics under this circumstance. The oscillators can coevolve with the network, and finally form a co-synchronized pair. Or if we only allow a fraction of oscillators to send pulses every time, the oscillators can synchronize with the network remai…
We investigate coupled identical phase oscillators with scale-free distribution of coupling strength. It is shown that partially locked states can occur due to the inhomogeneity in coupling and some properties of the coupling function. Various quantities of the partially locked states are computed through a self-consistency argument and the values show good agreement with simulation results.
This paper presents new methods and results on almost global synchronization of coupled Hopf nonlinear oscillators, which are commonly used as the dynamic model of engineered central pattern generators (CPGs). On balanced graphs, any positive coupling gain is proven to induce almost global asymptotic synchronization, and a threshold value for truly global exponential synchronization is also computed. Furthermore, a hierarchical connection between coupled Hopf oscillators and Kuramoto oscillators is identified. Finally, a new result on the synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators with arbitrary …
Chimera states, a symmetry-breaking spatiotemporal pattern in nonlocally coupled identical dynamical units, prevail in a variety of systems. Here, we consider a population of nonlocally coupled bicomponent phase oscillators in which oscillators with natural frequency $ω_0$ (positive oscillators) and $-ω_0$ (negative oscillators) are randomly distributed along a ring. We show the existence of chimera states no matter how large $ω_0$ is and the states manifest themselves in the form that oscillators with positive/negative frequency support their own chimera states. There are two types of chimera…
Globally coupled phase oscillator models, such as the Kuramoto model, exhibit spontaneous collective synchronization. Such models can be restated in terms of interactions within and between subsets of oscillators. An approximation for the internal structure of coherent subsets of oscillators can be made based on the observations of natural ordering and uniform tidal effects. The approximation is seen to perform well for predicting the microstructure in a variety of phase oscillator models.
We investigate a system of four nearest neighbour bidirectional coupled phase oscillators of dissimilar initial frequencies in a ring at the changeover into a synchronizing state. There are twenty four permutations upon assigning the initial frequencies to the oscillators. The local interaction between the adjacent coupled phase oscillators introduces details to the synchronization features. Therefore, for the four unalike local coupled oscillators, we classify all possible arrangements into three classes, where each class contains eight configurations. The synchronized state appears at the di…
We examine the design of the entrainment process for an uncountably infinite collection of coupled phase oscillators that are all subject to the same periodic driving signal. In the absence of coupling, an appropriately designed input can result in each oscillator attaining the frequency of the driving signal, with a phase offset determined by its natural frequency. We consider a special case of interacting oscillators in which the coupling tends to destabilize the phase configuration to which the driving signal would send the collection in the absence of coupling. In this setting we derive st…
This paper aims to study amplitude death in time delay coupled oscillators using the occasional coupling scheme that implies the intermittent interaction among the oscillators. An enhancement of amplitude death regions (i.e., an increment of the width of the amplitude death regions along the control parameter axis) can be possible using the occasional coupling in a pair of delay-coupled oscillators. Our study starts with coupled limit cycle oscillators (Stuart-Landau) and coupled chaotic oscillators (Rössler). We further examine coupled horizontal Rijke tubes, a prototypical model of thermoaco…
A generalized Kuramoto model of coupled phase oscillators with slowly varying coupling matrix is studied. The dynamics of the coupling coefficients is driven by the phase difference of pairs of oscillators in such a way that the coupling strengthens for synchronized oscillators and weakens for non-synchronized pairs. The system possesses a family of stable solutions corresponding to synchronized clusters of different sizes. A particular cluster can be formed by applying external driving at a given frequency to a group of oscillators. Once established, the synchronized state is robust against n…
We consider models of identical pulse-coupled oscillators with global interactions. Previous work showed that under certain conditions such systems always end up in sync, but did not quantify how small clusters of synchronized oscillators progressively coalesce into larger ones. Using tools from the study of aggregation phenomena, we obtain exact results for the time-dependent distribution of cluster sizes as the system evolves from disorder to synchrony.
We consider the nonlinear extension of the Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators where the phase shift in the coupling function depends on the order parameter. A bifurcation analysis of the transition from fully synchronous state to partial synchrony is performed. We demonstrate that for small ensembles it is typically mediated by stable cluster states, that disappear with creation of heteroclinic cycles, while for a larger number of oscillators a direct transition from full synchrony to a periodic or quasiperiodic regime occurs.
In this article, we investigate the dynamical robustness in a network of relaxation oscillators. In particular, we consider a network of diffusively coupled Van der Pol oscillators to explore the aging transition phenomena. Our investigation reveals that the mechanism of aging transition in a network of Van der Pol oscillator is quite different from that of typical sinusoidal oscillators such as Stuart-Landau oscillators. Unlike sinusoidal oscillators, the order parameter does not follow the second-order phase transition. Rather we observe an abnormal phase transition of the order parameter du…
We make a short review about the synchronization in coupled phase oscillator models. Next, we study the common-noise-induced synchronization among active rotators. At an intermediate noise strength, the noise-induced synchronization takes place most effectively, which is analogous to the stochastic resonance. Finally, we study the synchronization of coupled phase oscillators with nonvariational interaction on scale-free networks. We find a sharp transition and a weak hysteresis in the nonvariational systems. The sharp transition is found also in the mean-field approximation.
A death of oscillation is reported in a network of coupled synchronized oscillators in presence of additional repulsive coupling. The repulsive link evolves as an averaging effect of mutual interaction between two neighboring oscillators due to a local fault and the number of repulsive links grows in time when the death scenario emerges. Analytical condition for oscillation death is derived for two coupled Landau-Stuart systems. Numerical results also confirm oscillation death in chaotic systems such as a Sprott system and the Rössler oscillator. We explore the effect in large networks of glob…
We present an equation-free computational approach to the study of the coarse-grained dynamics of {\it finite} assemblies of {\it non-identical} coupled oscillators at and near full synchronization. We use coarse-grained observables which account for the (rapidly developing) correlations between phase angles and oscillator natural frequencies. Exploiting short bursts of appropriately initialized detailed simulations, we circumvent the derivation of closures for the long-term dynamics of the assembly statistics.
Like the inertia of a physical body describes its tendency to resist changes of its state of motion, inertia of an oscillator describes its tendency to resist changes of its frequency. Here we show that finite inertia of individual oscillators enables nonlinear phase waves in spatially extended coupled systems. Using a discrete model of coupled phase oscillators with inertia, we investigate these wave phenomena numerically, complemented by a continuum approximation that permits the analytical description of the key features of wave propagation in the long-wavelength limit. The ability to exhib…
We report on a novel type of instability observed in a noisy oscillator unidirectionally coupled to a pacemaker. Using a phase oscillator model, we find that, as the coupling strength is increased, the noisy oscillator lags behind the pacemaker more frequently and the phase slip rate increases, which may not be observed in averaged phase models such as the Kuramoto model. Investigation of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation enables us to obtain the reentrant transition line between the synchronized state and the phase slip state. We verify our theory using the Brusselator model, suggestin…
We investigate oscillation death in systems of coupled nonlinear oscillators with feedback loop. We find that feedback results in oscillation death both in small sets or large ensembles. More importantly, the death zone in parameter space is significantly enlarged and oscillation death could occur even in coupled identical oscillators in the presence of feedback. We find that there are two different ways to oscillation death, namely desynchronization and completely synchronization induced oscillation death. Feedback induced oscillation death may be used to suppress unexpected oscillations, e.g…
A universal approach is proposed for suppression of collective synchrony in a large population of interacting rhythmic units. We demonstrate that provided that the internal coupling is weak, stabilization of overall oscillations with vanishing stimulation leads to desynchronization in a large ensemble of coupled oscillators, without altering significantly the essential nature of each constituent oscillator. We expect our findings to be a starting point for the issue of destroying undesired synchronization, e. g. desynchronization techniques for deep brain stimulation for neurological diseases …
We explore the collective phase dynamics of Wien-bridge oscillators coupled resistively. We carefully analyze the behavior of two coupled oscillators, obtaining a transformation from voltage to effective phase. From the phase dynamics we show that the coupling can be quantitatively described by Sakaguchi's modification to the Kuramoto model. We also examine an ensemble of oscillators whose frequencies are taken from a flat distribution within a fixed frequency interval. We characterize in detail the synchronized cluster, its initial formation, as well as its effect on unsynchronized oscillator…
In this paper, we investigate synchronization of coupled second-order linear harmonic oscillators with random noises and time delays. The interaction topology is modeled by a weighted directed graph and the weights are perturbed by white noise. On the basis of stability theory of stochastic differential delay equations, algebraic graph theory and matrix theory, we show that the coupled harmonic oscillators can be synchronized almost surely with perturbation and time delays. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate our theoretical results.
A long-standing expectation is that two repulsively coupled oscillators tend to oscillate in opposite directions. It has been difficult to achieve complete synchrony in coupled identical oscillators with purely repulsive coupling. Here, we introduce a general coupling condition based on the linear matrix of dynamical systems for the emergence of the complete synchronization in pure repulsively coupled oscillators. The proposed coupling profiles (coupling matrices) define a bidirectional cross-coupling link that plays the role of indicator for the onset of complete synchrony between identical o…
When identical oscillators are coupled together in a network, dynamical steady states are often assumed to reflect network symmetries. Here we show that alternative persistent states may also exist that break the symmetries of the underlying coupling network. We further show that these symmetry-broken coexistent states are analogous to those dubbed "chimera states," which can occur when identical oscillators are coupled to one another in identical ways.
We present and analyze deterministic complex networks of pulse-coupled oscillators that exhibits recurrent events comprised of an increase and a decline in synchrony. Events emerging from the networks may form an oscillatory behavior or may be separated by periods of asynchrony with varying duration. The phenomenon is specific to spatial networks with both short- and long-ranged connections and requires delayed interactions and refractoriness of oscillators.
This paper investigates the emergence of amplitude death and revival of oscillations from the suppression states in a system of coupled dynamical units interacting through delayed cyclic mode. In order to resurrect the oscillation from amplitude death state, we introduce asymmetry and feedback parameter in the cyclic coupling forms as a result of which the death region shrinks due to higher asymmetry and lower feedback parameter values for coupled oscillatory systems. Some analytical conditions are derived for amplitude death and revival of oscillations in two coupled limit cycle oscillators a…
We study an oscillatory medium with a nonlinear global coupling that gives rise to a harmonic mean-field oscillation with constant amplitude and frequency. Two types of cluster states are found, each undergoing a symmetry-breaking transition towards a related chimera state. We demonstrate that the diffusional coupling is non-essential for these complex dynamics. Furthermore, we investigate localized turbulence and discuss whether it can be categorized as a chimera state.
A delay is known to induce multistability in periodic systems. Under influence of noise, coupled oscillators can switch between coexistent orbits with different frequencies and different oscillation patterns. For coupled phase oscillators we reduce the delay system to a non-delayed Langevin equation, which allows us to analytically compute the distribution of frequencies, and their corresponding residence times. The number of stable periodic orbits scales with the roundtrip delay time and coupling strength, but the noisy system visits only a fraction of the orbits, which scales with the square…
We consider chimera states of coupled identical phase oscillators where some oscillators are phase synchronized while others are desynchronized. It is known that chimera states of non-locally coupled Kuramoto--Sakaguchi oscillators in arrays of finite size are chaotic transients when the phase lag parameter $α\in (0, π/2)$; after a transient time, all the oscillators are phase synchronized, with the transient time increasing exponentially with the number of oscillators. In this work, we consider a small array of six non-locally coupled oscillators with the phase lag parameter $α\in (π/2, π)$ i…
In this paper, we study the applicability of an early warning index while studying the transitions to complete and generalized synchronizations in the coupled oscillator models using an unconventional system parameter and the coupling strength as the required control parameters. The coupled oscillator models are widely used and well-documented for studying various aspects of nature. However, the early warning index used in this paper is an explicit function of the mutual information of the coupled oscillators and reaches two different values before the interacting oscillators yield complete an…
It is shown that globally-coupled oscillators with pulse interaction can synchronize under broader conditions than widely believed from a theorem of Mirollo \& Strogatz \cite{MirolloII}. This behavior is stable against frozen disorder. Beside the relevance to biology, it is argued that synchronization in relaxation oscillator models is related to Self-Organized Criticality in Stick-Slip-like models.
We study the bifurcations and the chaotic behaviour of a periodically forced double-well Duffing oscillator coupled to a single-well Duffing oscillator. Using the amplitude and the frequency of the driving force as control parameters, we show that our model presents phenomena which were not observed in coupled periodically forced Duffing oscillators with identical potentials. In the regime of relatively weak coupling, bubbles of bifurcations and chains of symmetry-breaking are identified. For much stronger couplings, Hopf bifurcations born from orbits of higher periodicity and supercritical Ne…
We introduce a stochastic model of coupled genetic oscillators in which chains of chemical events involved in gene regulation and expression are represented as sequences of Poisson processes. We characterize steady states by their frequency, their quality factor and their synchrony by the oscillator cross correlation. The steady state is determined by coupling and exhibits stochastic transitions between different modes. The interplay of stochasticity and nonlinearity leads to isolated regions in parameter space in which the coupled system works best as a biological pacemaker. Key features of t…
We study synchronization in a system of Stuart-Landau oscillators with frequency-weighted coupling. For three typical unimodal frequency distributions, namely, the Lorentzian, the triangle, and the uniform, we found that the first-order transition occurs when the frequency distribution is relatively compact, while the synchronization transition is continuous when it is relatively wide. In both cases, there is a regime of Bellerophon state between the incoherent state and the synchronized state. Remarkably, we revealed novel transition behavior for such coupled oscillators with amplitudes, i.e.…
We implement nonlinear anharmonic interaction in the coupled van der Pol oscillators to investigate the quantum synchronization behaviour of the systems. We study the quantum synchronization in two oscillator models, coupled quantum van der Pol oscillators and anharmonic self-oscillators. We demonstrate that the considered systems exhibit a high-order synchronization through coupling in both classical and quantum domains. We show that due to the anharmonicity of the nonlinear interaction between the oscillators the system exhibits phonon blockade in the phase locking regime which is a pure non…
We investigate states of enhanced activity in a biological neuronal network composed of pulse-coupled oscillators. The synaptic couplings between the neurons are dynamic, modeling spike time dependent plasticity. The network exhibits statistical characteristics which recently have been identified in an analysis of epileptic seizures [Osorio et al., Phys. Rev. E 82, 021919(2010)] based on analogies to the onset of earth quakes.
This letter concerns the reliability of coupled oscillator networks in response to fluctuating inputs. Reliability means that (following a transient) an input elicits identical responses upon repeated presentations, regardless of the system's initial condition. Here, we analyze this property for two coupled oscillators, demonstrating that oscillator networks exhibit both reliable and unreliable dynamics for broad ranges of coupling strengths. We further argue that unreliable dynamics are characterized by strange attractors with random SRB measures, implying that though unreliable, the response…
We study the reliability of spike output in a general class of pulse-coupled oscillators receiving a fluctuating input. Showing that this problem is equivalent to noise-induced synchronization between identical networks of oscillators, we employ the phase reduction method to analytically derive the average Lyapunov exponent of the synchronized state. We show that a transition occurs between reliable and unreliable responses at a critical coupling strength, which is determined through the competition between the external input and recurrent input. To our surprise, the critical value does not de…
We propose a concept for reservoir computing on oscillators using the high-order synchronization effect. The reservoir output is presented in the form of oscillator synchronization metrics: fractional high-order synchronization value and synchronization efficiency, expressed as a percentage. Using two coupled relaxation oscillators built on VO2 switches, we created an oscillator reservoir that allows simulating the XOR operation. The reservoir can operate as with static input data (power currents, coupling forces), as with dynamic data in the form of spike sequences. Having a small number of o…
We analyze the collective behavior of a lattice model of pulse-coupled oscillators. By studying the intrinsic dynamics of each member of the population and their mutual interactions we observe the emergence of either spatio-temporal structures or synchronized regimes. We perform a linear stability analysis of these structures.
