We formulate a reduction theory that describes the response of an oscillator network as a whole to external forcing applied nonuniformly to its constituent oscillators. The phase description of multiple oscillator networks coupled weakly is also developed. General formulae for the collective phase sensitivity and the effective phase coupling between the oscillator networks are found. Our theory is applicable to a wide variety of oscillator networks undergoing frequency synchronization. Any network structure can systematically be treated. A few examples are given to illustrate our theory.
We study the phase synchronization between collective rhythms of fully locked oscillator groups. For weakly interacting groups of two oscillators with global sinusoidal coupling, we analytically derive the collective phase coupling function, which determines the dynamics of the collective phase difference between the groups. We demonstrate that the groups can exhibit anti-phase collective synchronization in spite of microscopic in-phase external coupling and vice versa.
We formulate a theory for the collective phase description of globally coupled noisy limit-cycle oscillators exhibiting macroscopic rhythms. Collective phase equations describing such macroscopic rhythms are derived by means of a two-step phase reduction. The collective phase sensitivity and collective phase coupling functions, which quantitatively characterize the macroscopic rhythms, are illustrated using three representative models of limit-cycle oscillators. As an important result of the theory, we demonstrate noise-induced anti-phase synchronization between macroscopic rhythms by direct n…
Phase synchronization between collective oscillations exhibited by two weakly interacting groups of non-identical phase oscillators with internal and external global sinusoidal coupling of the groups is analyzed theoretically. Coupled amplitude equations describing the collective oscillations of the oscillator groups are obtained by using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz, and then coupled phase equations for the collective oscillations are derived by phase reduction of the amplitude equations. The collective phase coupling function, which determines the dynamics of macroscopic phase differences between…
We theoretically investigate collective phase synchronization between interacting groups of globally coupled noisy identical phase oscillators exhibiting macroscopic rhythms. Using the phase reduction method, we derive coupled collective phase equations describing the macroscopic rhythms of the groups from microscopic Langevin phase equations of the individual oscillators via nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations. For sinusoidal microscopic coupling, we determine the type of the collective phase coupling function, i.e., whether the groups exhibit in-phase or anti-phase synchronization. We show tha…
The behavior at bifurcation from global synchronization to partial synchronization in finite networks of coupled oscillators is a complex phenomenon, involving the intricate dynamics of one or more oscillators with the remaining synchronized oscillators. This is not captured well by standard macroscopic model reduction techniques which capture only the collective behavior of synchronized oscillators in the thermodynamic limit. We introduce two mesoscopic model reductions for finite sparse networks of coupled oscillators to quantitatively capture the dynamics close to bifurcation from global to…
The effect of time-delayed coupling on the collective behavior of a population of globally coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau (GCCGL) oscillators is investigated. A detailed numerical study is carried out to study the impact of time delay on various collective states that include synchronous states, multicluster states, chaos, amplitude mediated chimeras and incoherent states. It is found that time delay can bring about significant changes in the dynamical properties of these states including their regions of existence and stability. In general, an increase in time delay is seen to lower the thre…
Model reduction techniques have been widely used to study the collective behavior of globally coupled oscillators. However, most approaches assume that there are infinitely many oscillators. Here we propose a new ansatz, based on the collective coordinate approach, that reproduces the collective dynamics of the Kuramoto model for finite networks to high accuracy, yields the same bifurcation structure in the thermodynamic limit of infinitely many oscillators as previous approaches, and additionally captures the dynamics of the order parameter in the thermodynamic limit, including critical slowi…
We investigate the effect of repulsive coupling together with an attractive coupling in a network of nonlocally coupled oscillators. To understand the complex interaction between these two couplings we introduce a control parameter in the repulsive coupling which plays a crucial role in inducing distinct complex collective patterns. In particular, we show the emergence of various cluster chimera death states through a dynamically distinct transition route, namely the oscillatory cluster state and coherent oscillation death state as a function of the repulsive coupling in the presence of the at…
We formulate a theory for the collective phase description of oscillatory convection in Hele-Shaw cells. It enables us to describe the dynamics of the oscillatory convection by a single degree of freedom which we call the collective phase. The theory can be considered as a phase reduction method for limit-cycle solutions in infinite-dimensional dynamical systems, namely, stable time-periodic solutions to partial differential equations, representing the oscillatory convection. We derive the phase sensitivity function, which quantifies the phase response of the oscillatory convection to weak per…
A simple system composed of electronic oscillators capable of emitting and detecting light-pulses is studied. The oscillators are biologically inspired, their behavior is designed for keeping a desired light intensity, W, in the system. From another perspective, the system behaves like modified integrate and fire type neurons that are pulse-coupled with inhibitory type interactions: the firing of one oscillator delays the firing of all the others. Experimental and computational studies reveal that although no driving force favoring synchronization is considered, for a given interval of W phase…
We have investigated synchronized pattern in a network of Thomas oscillators coupled with sinusoidal nonlinear coupling. Pattern like chimera states are not only observed for many non-locally coupled oscillators but there is a signature of it even for locally coupled few oscillators. For certain range of intermediate coupling, clusters are also observed. These patterns do resemble with motion of real self propelled coupled dynamical systems.
We consider the transient behavior of globally coupled systems of identical pulse coupled oscillators. Synchrony develops through an aggregation phenomenon, with clusters of synchronized oscillators forming and growing larger in time. Previous work derived expressions for these time dependent clusters, when each oscillator obeyed a linear charging curve. We generalize these results to cases where the charging curves have nonlinearities
We study under which conditions systems of coupled oscillators on complex networks display remote synchronization, a situation where pairs of vertices, not necessarily physically linked, but with the same network symmetry, are synchronized.
We present an efficient technique for control of synchrony in a globally coupled ensemble by pulsatile action. We assume that we can observe the collective oscillation and can stimulate all elements of the ensemble simultaneously. We pay special attention to the minimization of intervention into the system. The key idea is to stimulate only at the most sensitive phase. To find this phase we implement an adaptive feedback control. Estimating the instantaneous phase of the collective mode on the fly, we achieve efficient suppression using a few pulses per oscillatory cycle. We discuss the possib…
Many real-world examples of distributed oscillators involve not only time delays but also attractive (positive) and repulsive (negative) influences in their network interactions. Here, considering such examples, we generalize the Kuramoto model of globally coupled oscillators with time-delayed positive and negative couplings to explore the effects of such couplings in collective phase synchronization. We analytically derive the exact solutions for stable incoherent and coherent states in terms of the system parameters allowing us to precisely understand the interplay of time delays and couplin…
We study a large population of globally coupled phase oscillators subject to common white Gaussian noise and find analytically that the critical coupling strength between oscillators for synchronization transition decreases with an increase in the intensity of common noise. Thus, common noise promotes the onset of synchronization. Our prediction is confirmed by numerical simulations of the phase oscillators as well as of limit-cycle oscillators.
The collective phase response to a macroscopic external perturbation of a population of interacting nonlinear elements exhibiting collective oscillations is formulated for the case of globally-coupled oscillators. The macroscopic phase sensitivity is derived from the microscopic phase sensitivity of the constituent oscillators by a two-step phase reduction. We apply this result to quantify the stability of the macroscopic common-noise induced synchronization of two uncoupled populations of oscillators undergoing coherent collective oscillations.
We explore the phase reduction in networks of coupled oscillators in the higher orders of the coupling parameter. For coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators, where the phase can be introduced explicitly, we develop an analytic perturbation procedure to allow for the obtaining of the higher-order approximation explicitly. We demonstrate this by deriving the second-order phase equations for a network of three Stuart-Landau oscillators. For systems where explicit expressions of the phase are not available, we present a numerical procedure that constructs the phase dynamics equations for a small networ…
The theoretical description of synchronization phenomena often relies on coupled units of continuous time noisy Markov chains with a small number of states in each unit. It is frequently assumed, either explicitly or implicitly, that coupled discrete-state noisy Markov units can be used to model mathematically more complex coupled noisy continuous phase oscillators. In this work we explore conditions that justify this assumption by coarse-graining continuous phase units. In particular, we determine the minimum number of states necessary to justify this correspondence for Kuramoto-like oscillat…
A rationale is provided for the emergence of synchronization in a system of coupled oscillators in a stick-slip motion. The single oscillator has a limit cycle in a region of the state space for each parameter set beyond the supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The two-oscillator system that has similar weakly coupled oscillators exhibits synchronization in a parameter range. The synchronization has an anti-phase nature for an identical pair. However, it tends to be more in-phase for a non-identical pair with a rather weak coupling. A system of three identical oscillators (1, 2, and 3) coupled in a…
We investigate coupled identical phase oscillators with scale-free distribution of coupling strength. It is shown that partially locked states can occur due to the inhomogeneity in coupling and some properties of the coupling function. Various quantities of the partially locked states are computed through a self-consistency argument and the values show good agreement with simulation results.
A general phase reduction method for a network of coupled dynamical elements exhibiting collective oscillations, which is applicable to arbitrary networks of heterogeneous dynamical elements, is developed. A set of coupled adjoint equations for phase sensitivity functions, which characterize phase response of the collective oscillation to small perturbations applied to individual elements, is derived. Using the phase sensitivity functions, collective oscillation of the network under weak perturbation can be described approximately by a one-dimensional phase equation. As an example, mutual sync…
Chimera states, a symmetry-breaking spatiotemporal pattern in nonlocally coupled identical dynamical units, prevail in a variety of systems. Here, we consider a population of nonlocally coupled bicomponent phase oscillators in which oscillators with natural frequency $ω_0$ (positive oscillators) and $-ω_0$ (negative oscillators) are randomly distributed along a ring. We show the existence of chimera states no matter how large $ω_0$ is and the states manifest themselves in the form that oscillators with positive/negative frequency support their own chimera states. There are two types of chimera…
The Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model for coupled phase oscillators with phase-frustration is often studied in the thermodynamic limit of infinitely many oscillators. Here we extend a model reduction method based on collective coordinates to capture the collective dynamics of finite size Kuramoto-Sakaguchi models. We find that the inclusion of the effects of rogue oscillators is essential to obtain an accurate description, in contrast to the original Kuramoto model where we show that their effects can be ignored. We further introduce a more accurate ansatz function to describe the shape of synchronized…
Coupled oscillators have been used to study synchronization in a wide range of social, biological, and physical systems, including pedestrian-induced bridge resonances, coordinated lighting up of firefly swarms, and enhanced output peak intensity in synchronizing laser arrays. Here we advance this subject by studying a variant of the Kuramoto model, where the coupling between the phase oscillators is heterogeneous and nonlinear. In particular, the quenched disorder in the coupling strength and the intrinsic frequencies are correlated, and the coupling itself depends on the amplitude of the mea…
Janus oscillators have been recently introduced as a remarkably simple phase oscillator model that exhibits non-trivial dynamical patterns -- such as chimeras, explosive transitions, and asymmetry-induced synchronization -- that once were only observed in specifically tailored models. Here we study ensembles of Janus oscillators coupled on large homogeneous and heterogeneous networks. By virtue of the Ott-Antonsen reduction scheme, we find that the rich dynamics of Janus oscillators persists in the thermodynamic limit of random regular, Erdős-Rényi and scale-free random networks. We uncover fo…
We analyze accuracy of different low-dimensional reductions of the collective dynamics in large populations of coupled phase oscillators with intrinsic noise. Three approximations are considered: (i) the Ott-Antonsen ansatz, (ii) the Gaussian ansatz, and (iii) a two-cumulant truncation of the circular cumulant representation of the original system's dynamics. For the latter we suggest a closure, which makes the truncation, for small noise, a rigorous first-order correction to the Ott-Antonsen ansatz, and simultaneously is a generalization of the Gaussian ansatz. The Kuramoto model with intrins…
We study two intertwined globally coupled networks of noisy Kuramoto phase oscillators that have the same natural frequency, but differ in their perception of the mean field and their contribution to it. Such a give-and-take mechanism is given by asymmetric in- and out-coupling strengths which can be both positive and negative. We uncover in this minimal network of networks intriguing patterns of discordance, where the ensemble splits into two clusters separated by a constant phase lag. If it differs from $π$, then traveling wave solutions emerge. We observe a second route to traveling waves v…
The simplest ring oscillator is made from three strongly nonlinear elements repressing each other unidirectionally resulting in the emergence of a limit cycle. A popular implementation of this scheme uses repressive genes in bacteria creating the synthetic genetic oscillator known as the Repressilator. Here, we consider the main collective modes produced when two identical Repressilators are mean-field coupled via the quorum sensing (QS) mechanism which is realized via production of diffusive signal molecules. Using the rate of the repressor's production and the value of coupling strength as t…
In this paper, we propose a framework to investigate the collective dynamics in ensembles of globally coupled phase oscillators when higher-order modes dominate the coupling. The spatiotemporal properties of the attractors in various regions of parameter space are analyzed. Furthermore, a detailed linear stability analysis proves that the stationary symmetric distribution is only neutrally stable in the marginal regime which stems from the generalized time-reversal symmetry. Moreover, the critical parameters of the transition among various regimes are determined analytically by both the Ott-An…
Many real-world systems are often regarded as weakly coupled limit-cycle oscillators, in which each oscillator corresponds to a dynamical system with many degrees of freedom that have collective oscillations. One of the most practical methods for investigating the synchronization properties of such a rhythmic system is to statistically extract phase coupling functions between limit-cycle oscillators directly from observed time-series data. In Particular, using a method that combines phase reduction theory and Bayesian inference, the phase coupling functions can be extracted from the time-serie…
In this paper we discuss recent progress in research of ensembles of mean field coupled oscillators. Without an ambition to present a comprehensive review, we outline most interesting from our viewpoint results and surprises, as well as interrelations between different approaches.
We propose a coupled system of fast and slow phase oscillators. We observe two-step transitions to quasi-periodic motions by direct numerical simulations of this coupled oscillator system. A low-dimensional equation for order parameters is derived using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz. The applicability of the ansatz is checked by the comparison of numerical results of the coupled oscillator system and the reduced low-dimensional equation. We investigate further several interesting phenomena in which mutual interactions between the fast and slow oscillators play an essential role. Fast oscillations ap…
This paper presents new methods and results on almost global synchronization of coupled Hopf nonlinear oscillators, which are commonly used as the dynamic model of engineered central pattern generators (CPGs). On balanced graphs, any positive coupling gain is proven to induce almost global asymptotic synchronization, and a threshold value for truly global exponential synchronization is also computed. Furthermore, a hierarchical connection between coupled Hopf oscillators and Kuramoto oscillators is identified. Finally, a new result on the synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators with arbitrary …
Globally coupled phase oscillator models, such as the Kuramoto model, exhibit spontaneous collective synchronization. Such models can be restated in terms of interactions within and between subsets of oscillators. An approximation for the internal structure of coherent subsets of oscillators can be made based on the observations of natural ordering and uniform tidal effects. The approximation is seen to perform well for predicting the microstructure in a variety of phase oscillator models.

This paper aims to study amplitude death in time delay coupled oscillators using the occasional coupling scheme that implies the intermittent interaction among the oscillators. An enhancement of amplitude death regions (i.e., an increment of the width of the amplitude death regions along the control parameter axis) can be possible using the occasional coupling in a pair of delay-coupled oscillators. Our study starts with coupled limit cycle oscillators (Stuart-Landau) and coupled chaotic oscillators (Rössler). We further examine coupled horizontal Rijke tubes, a prototypical model of thermoaco…
We make a short review about the synchronization in coupled phase oscillator models. Next, we study the common-noise-induced synchronization among active rotators. At an intermediate noise strength, the noise-induced synchronization takes place most effectively, which is analogous to the stochastic resonance. Finally, we study the synchronization of coupled phase oscillators with nonvariational interaction on scale-free networks. We find a sharp transition and a weak hysteresis in the nonvariational systems. The sharp transition is found also in the mean-field approximation.
A death of oscillation is reported in a network of coupled synchronized oscillators in presence of additional repulsive coupling. The repulsive link evolves as an averaging effect of mutual interaction between two neighboring oscillators due to a local fault and the number of repulsive links grows in time when the death scenario emerges. Analytical condition for oscillation death is derived for two coupled Landau-Stuart systems. Numerical results also confirm oscillation death in chaotic systems such as a Sprott system and the Rössler oscillator. We explore the effect in large networks of glob…
We study synchronization of oscillators that are indirectly coupled through their interaction with an environment. We give criteria for the stability or instability of a synchronized oscillation. Using these criteria we investigate synchronization of systems of oscillators which are weakly coupled, in the sense that the influence of the oscillators on the environment is weak. We prove that arbitrarily weak coupling will synchronize the oscillators, provided that this coupling is of the 'right' sign. We illustrate our general results by applications to a model of coupled GnRH neuron oscillators…
Synchronisation of coupled oscillators is a ubiquitous phenomenon, occurring in topics ranging from biology and physics, to social networks and technology. A fundamental and long-time goal in the study of synchronisation has been to find low-order descriptions of complex oscillator networks and their collective dynamics. However, for the Kuramoto model - the most widely used model of coupled oscillators - this goal has remained surprisingly challenging, in particular for finite-size networks. Here, we propose a model reduction framework that effectively captures synchronisation behaviour in co…
We investigate oscillation death in systems of coupled nonlinear oscillators with feedback loop. We find that feedback results in oscillation death both in small sets or large ensembles. More importantly, the death zone in parameter space is significantly enlarged and oscillation death could occur even in coupled identical oscillators in the presence of feedback. We find that there are two different ways to oscillation death, namely desynchronization and completely synchronization induced oscillation death. Feedback induced oscillation death may be used to suppress unexpected oscillations, e.g…
We explore the collective phase dynamics of Wien-bridge oscillators coupled resistively. We carefully analyze the behavior of two coupled oscillators, obtaining a transformation from voltage to effective phase. From the phase dynamics we show that the coupling can be quantitatively described by Sakaguchi's modification to the Kuramoto model. We also examine an ensemble of oscillators whose frequencies are taken from a flat distribution within a fixed frequency interval. We characterize in detail the synchronized cluster, its initial formation, as well as its effect on unsynchronized oscillator…
In this paper, we investigate synchronization of coupled second-order linear harmonic oscillators with random noises and time delays. The interaction topology is modeled by a weighted directed graph and the weights are perturbed by white noise. On the basis of stability theory of stochastic differential delay equations, algebraic graph theory and matrix theory, we show that the coupled harmonic oscillators can be synchronized almost surely with perturbation and time delays. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate our theoretical results.
This paper investigates the emergence of amplitude death and revival of oscillations from the suppression states in a system of coupled dynamical units interacting through delayed cyclic mode. In order to resurrect the oscillation from amplitude death state, we introduce asymmetry and feedback parameter in the cyclic coupling forms as a result of which the death region shrinks due to higher asymmetry and lower feedback parameter values for coupled oscillatory systems. Some analytical conditions are derived for amplitude death and revival of oscillations in two coupled limit cycle oscillators a…
We present a collective coordinate approach to study the collective behaviour of a finite ensemble of $N$ stochastic Kuramoto oscillators using two degrees of freedom; one describing the shape dynamics of the oscillators and one describing their mean phase. Contrary to the thermodynamic limit $N\to\infty$ in which the mean phase of the cluster of globally synchronized oscillators is constant in time, the mean phase of a finite-size cluster experiences Brownian diffusion with a variance proportional to $1/N$. This finite-size effect is quantitatively well captured by our collective coordinate a…
Large ensembles of heterogeneous oscillators often exhibit collective synchronization as a result of mutual interactions. If the oscillators have distributed natural frequencies and common shear (or nonisochronicity), the transition from incoherence to collective synchronization is known to occur at large enough values of the coupling strength. However, here we demonstrate that shear diversity cannot be counterbalanced by diffusive coupling leading to synchronization. We present the first analytical results for the Kuramoto model with distributed shear, and show that the onset of collective sy…
A long-standing expectation is that two repulsively coupled oscillators tend to oscillate in opposite directions. It has been difficult to achieve complete synchrony in coupled identical oscillators with purely repulsive coupling. Here, we introduce a general coupling condition based on the linear matrix of dynamical systems for the emergence of the complete synchronization in pure repulsively coupled oscillators. The proposed coupling profiles (coupling matrices) define a bidirectional cross-coupling link that plays the role of indicator for the onset of complete synchrony between identical o…
When identical oscillators are coupled together in a network, dynamical steady states are often assumed to reflect network symmetries. Here we show that alternative persistent states may also exist that break the symmetries of the underlying coupling network. We further show that these symmetry-broken coexistent states are analogous to those dubbed "chimera states," which can occur when identical oscillators are coupled to one another in identical ways.
We present and analyze deterministic complex networks of pulse-coupled oscillators that exhibits recurrent events comprised of an increase and a decline in synchrony. Events emerging from the networks may form an oscillatory behavior or may be separated by periods of asynchrony with varying duration. The phenomenon is specific to spatial networks with both short- and long-ranged connections and requires delayed interactions and refractoriness of oscillators.
We study an oscillatory medium with a nonlinear global coupling that gives rise to a harmonic mean-field oscillation with constant amplitude and frequency. Two types of cluster states are found, each undergoing a symmetry-breaking transition towards a related chimera state. We demonstrate that the diffusional coupling is non-essential for these complex dynamics. Furthermore, we investigate localized turbulence and discuss whether it can be categorized as a chimera state.
In this paper, we study the applicability of an early warning index while studying the transitions to complete and generalized synchronizations in the coupled oscillator models using an unconventional system parameter and the coupling strength as the required control parameters. The coupled oscillator models are widely used and well-documented for studying various aspects of nature. However, the early warning index used in this paper is an explicit function of the mutual information of the coupled oscillators and reaches two different values before the interacting oscillators yield complete an…
We introduce a stochastic model of coupled genetic oscillators in which chains of chemical events involved in gene regulation and expression are represented as sequences of Poisson processes. We characterize steady states by their frequency, their quality factor and their synchrony by the oscillator cross correlation. The steady state is determined by coupling and exhibits stochastic transitions between different modes. The interplay of stochasticity and nonlinearity leads to isolated regions in parameter space in which the coupled system works best as a biological pacemaker. Key features of t…
We study synchronization in a system of Stuart-Landau oscillators with frequency-weighted coupling. For three typical unimodal frequency distributions, namely, the Lorentzian, the triangle, and the uniform, we found that the first-order transition occurs when the frequency distribution is relatively compact, while the synchronization transition is continuous when it is relatively wide. In both cases, there is a regime of Bellerophon state between the incoherent state and the synchronized state. Remarkably, we revealed novel transition behavior for such coupled oscillators with amplitudes, i.e.…
We study the collective dynamics of identical phase oscillators on globally coupled networks whose interactions are asymmetric and mediated by positive and negative couplings. We split the set of oscillators into two interconnected subpopulations. In this setup, oscillators belonging to the same group interact via symmetric couplings while the interaction between subpopulations occurs in an asymmetric fashion. By employing the dimensional reduction scheme of the Ott-Antonsen (OA) theory, we verify the existence of traveling-wave and $π$-states, in addition to the classical fully synchronized a…
