We investigate oscillation death in systems of coupled nonlinear oscillators with feedback loop. We find that feedback results in oscillation death both in small sets or large ensembles. More importantly, the death zone in parameter space is significantly enlarged and oscillation death could occur even in coupled identical oscillators in the presence of feedback. We find that there are two different ways to oscillation death, namely desynchronization and completely synchronization induced oscillation death. Feedback induced oscillation death may be used to suppress unexpected oscillations, e.g., in chaotic laser arrays.
A death of oscillation is reported in a network of coupled synchronized oscillators in presence of additional repulsive coupling. The repulsive link evolves as an averaging effect of mutual interaction between two neighboring oscillators due to a local fault and the number of repulsive links grows in time when the death scenario emerges. Analytical condition for oscillation death is derived for two coupled Landau-Stuart systems. Numerical results also confirm oscillation death in chaotic systems such as a Sprott system and the Rössler oscillator. We explore the effect in large networks of glob…
This paper aims to study amplitude death in time delay coupled oscillators using the occasional coupling scheme that implies the intermittent interaction among the oscillators. An enhancement of amplitude death regions (i.e., an increment of the width of the amplitude death regions along the control parameter axis) can be possible using the occasional coupling in a pair of delay-coupled oscillators. Our study starts with coupled limit cycle oscillators (Stuart-Landau) and coupled chaotic oscillators (Rössler). We further examine coupled horizontal Rijke tubes, a prototypical model of thermoaco…
Many biological and chemical systems exhibit collective behavior in response to the change in their population density. These elements or cells communicate with each other via dynamical agents or signaling molecules. In this work, we explore the dynamics of nonlinear oscillators, specifically Stuart-Landau oscillators and Rayleigh oscillators, interacting globally through dynamical agents in the surrounding environment modeled as a quorum sensing interaction. The system exhibits the typical continuous second-order transition from oscillatory state to death state, when the oscillation amplitude…
We study the conditions of amplitude death in a network of delay-coupled limit cycle oscillators by including time-varying delay in the coupling and self-feedback. By generalizing the master stability function formalism to include variable-delay connections with high-frequency delay modulations (i.e., the distributed-delay limit), we analyze the regimes of amplitude death in a ring network of Stuart-Landau oscillators and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method with respect to the constant delay case. The possibility of stabilizing the steady state is restricted by the odd-number pr…
We investigate the significance of nonisochronicity parameter in a network of nonlocally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators with symmetry breaking form. We observe that the presence of nonisochronicity parameter leads to structural changes in the chimera death region while varying the strength of the interaction. This gives rise to the existence of different types of chimera death states such as multi-chimera death state, type-I periodic chimera death (PCD) state and, type-II periodic chimera death (PCD) state. We also find that the number of periodic domains in both the types of PCD states exp…
This paper investigates the emergence of amplitude death and revival of oscillations from the suppression states in a system of coupled dynamical units interacting through delayed cyclic mode. In order to resurrect the oscillation from amplitude death state, we introduce asymmetry and feedback parameter in the cyclic coupling forms as a result of which the death region shrinks due to higher asymmetry and lower feedback parameter values for coupled oscillatory systems. Some analytical conditions are derived for amplitude death and revival of oscillations in two coupled limit cycle oscillators a…
We report a novel spatiotemporal state, namely the chimera-like incongruous coexistence of {\it synchronized oscillation} and {\it stable steady state} (CSOD) in a realistic ecological network of nonlocally coupled oscillators. Unlike the {\it chimera} and {\it chimera death} state, in the CSOD state identical oscillators are self-organized into two coexisting spatially separated domains: In one domain neighboring oscillators show synchronized oscillation and in another domain the neighboring oscillators randomly populate either a synchronized oscillating state or a stable steady state (we cal…
In this report, we investigate the stabilization of saddle fixed points in coupled oscillators where individual oscillators exhibit the saddle fixed points. The coupled oscillators may have two structurally different types of suppressed states, namely amplitude death and oscillation death. The stabilization of saddle equilibrium point refers to the amplitude death state where oscillations are ceased and all the oscillators converge to the single stable steady state via inverse pitchfork bifurcation. Due to multistability features of oscillation death states, linear stability theory fails to an…
We study numerically the oscillation death state in the phase oscillator model proposed byWinfree. We found that the phases in this state follow very simple rules, actually, besides intrinsic properties of the oscillators, such as natural frequency and pulse shape, they depend only on the inverse of the degree. Other topological properties such as transitivity or associativity seems to play no role on this state. Furthermore, we found that degree-frequency correlation helps to inhibit oscillation death. Simple analytical approximations corroborate the numerical results.
For a network of generic oscillators with nonlocal topology and symmetry-breaking coupling we establish novel partially coherent inhomogeneous spatial patterns, which combine the features of chimera states (coexisting incongruous coherent and incoherent domains) and oscillation death (oscillation suppression), which we call chimera death. We show that due to the interplay of nonlocality and breaking of rotational symmetry by the coupling two distinct scenarios from oscillatory behavior to a stationary state regime are possible: a transition from an amplitude chimera to chimera death via in-pha…
Recently, the explosive phase transitions, such as explosive percolation and explosive synchronization, have attracted extensive research interest. So far, most existing works investigate Kuramoto-type models, where only phase variables are involved. Here, we report the occurrence of explosive oscillation quenching in a system of coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators that incorporates both phase and amplitude dynamics. We observe three typical scenarios with distinct microscopic mechanism of occurrence, i.e., ordinary, hierarchical, and cluster explosive oscillation death, corresponding to differe…
Coupled oscillators are shown to experience amplitude death for a much larger set of parameter values when they are connected with time delays distributed over an interval rather than concentrated at a point. Distributed delays enlarge and merge death islands in the parameter space. Furthermore, when the variance of the distribution is larger than a threshold the death region becomes unbounded and amplitude death can occur for any average value of delay. These phenomena are observed even with a small spread of delays, for different distribution functions, and an arbitrary number of oscillators…
We investigate the impact of a common external system, which we call a common environment, on the Oscillator Death (OD) states of a group of Stuart-Landau oscillators. The group of oscillators yield a completely symmetric OD state when uncoupled to the external system, i.e. the two OD states occur with equal probability. However, remarkably, when coupled to a common external system this symmetry is significantly broken. For exponentially decaying external systems, the symmetry breaking is very pronounced for low environmental damping and strong oscillator-environment coupling. This is evident …
We investigate the effects of mobility and density on the amplitude death of coupled oscillators in metapopulation networks, wherein each node represents a subpopulation with any number of mobile individuals. We perform stochastic simulations of the dynamical reaction-diffusion processes associated with the Landau-Stuart oscillators in scale-free networks. Interestingly, we find that, with increasing the mobility rate or density, the system may undergo phase transitions from incoherent state to amplitude death, and then to frequency synchronization. Especially, there exists an extent of interm…
Networks of weakly nonlinear oscillators are considered with diffusive and time-delayed coupling. Averaging theory is used to determine parameter ranges for which the network experiences amplitude death, whereby oscillations are quenched and the equilibrium solution has a large domain of attraction. The amplitude death is shown to be a common phenomenon, which can be observed regardless of the precise nature of the nonlinearities and under very general coupling conditions. In addition, when the network consists of dissimilar oscillators, there exist parameter values for which only parts of the…
Most previous studies on coupled dynamical systems assume that all interactions between oscillators take place uniformly in time, but in reality, this does not necessarily reflect the usual scenario. The heterogeneity in the timings of such interactions strongly influences the dynamical processes. Here, we introduce a time-evolving state-space dependent coupling among an ensemble of identical coupled oscillators, where individual units are interacting only when the mean state of the system lies within a certain proximity of the phase space. They interact globally with mean-field diffusive coup…
Many natural and man-made systems require suitable feedback to function properly. In this study, we aim to investigate the impact of additional complex conjugate feedback on globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. We find that this additional feedback results in the onset of symmetry breaking clusters and out-of-phase clusters. Interestingly, we also find the existence of explosive amplitude death along with disparate multistable states. We characterize the first-order transition to explosive death through the amplitude order parameter and show that the transition from oscillatory to death…
We report a new collective dynamical state, namely the {\it mixed mode oscillation suppression} state where different set of variables of a system of coupled oscillators show different types of oscillation suppression states. We identify two variants of it: The first one is a {\it mixed mode death} (MMD) state where a set of variables of a system of coupled oscillators show an oscillation death (OD) state, while the rest are in an amplitude death (AD) state under the identical parametric condition. In the second mixed death state (we refer it as the MNAD state) a nontrivial bistable AD and a m…
We propose a coupled system of fast and slow phase oscillators. We observe two-step transitions to quasi-periodic motions by direct numerical simulations of this coupled oscillator system. A low-dimensional equation for order parameters is derived using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz. The applicability of the ansatz is checked by the comparison of numerical results of the coupled oscillator system and the reduced low-dimensional equation. We investigate further several interesting phenomena in which mutual interactions between the fast and slow oscillators play an essential role. Fast oscillations ap…
We study oscillation death (OD) in a well-known coupled-oscillator system that has been used to model cardiovascular phenomena. We derive exact analytic conditions that allow the prediction of OD through the two known bifurcation routes, in the same model, and for different numbers of coupled oscillators. Our exact analytic results enable us to generalize OD as a multiparameter-sensitive phenomenon. It can be induced, not only by changes in couplings, but also by changes in the oscillator frequencies or amplitudes. We observe synchronization transitions as a function of coupling and confirm th…
We analyze the consequences of symmetry breaking in the coupling in a network of globally coupled identical Stuart-Landau oscillators. We observe that symmetry breaking leads to increased disorderliness in the dynamical behavior of oscillatory states and consequently results in a rich variety of dynamical states. Depending on the strength of the nonisochronicity parameter, we find various dynamical states such as amplitude chimera, amplitude cluster, frequency chimera and frequency cluster states. In addition we also find disparate transition routes to recently observed chimera death state in …
We study the quantum manifestations of homogeneous and inhomogeneous oscillation suppression states in coupled identical quantum oscillators. We consider quantum van der Pol oscillators coupled via weighted mean-field diffusive coupling and using the formalism of open quantum system we show that depending upon the coupling and the density of mean-field, two types of quantum amplitude death occurs, namely squeezed and nonsqueezed quantum amplitude death. Surprisingly, we find that the inhomogeneous oscillation suppression state (or the oscillation death state) does not occur in the quantum osci…
We report an interesting symmetry-breaking transition in coupled identical oscillators, namely the continuous transition from homogeneous to inhomogeneous limit cycle oscillations. The observed transition is the oscillatory analog of the Turing-type symmetry-breaking transition from amplitude death (i.e., stable homogeneous steady state) to oscillation death (i.e., stable inhomogeneous steady state). This novel transition occurs in the parametric zone of occurrence of rhythmogenesis and oscillation death as a consequence of the presence of local filtering in the coupling path. We consider para…
We study the death and restoration of collective oscillations in networks of oscillators coupled through random-walk diffusion. Differently than the usual diffusion coupling used to model chemical reactions, here the equilibria of the uncoupled unit is not a solution of the coupled ensemble. Instead, the connectivity modifies both, the original unstable fixed point and the stable limit-cycle, making them node-dependent. Using numerical simulations in random networks we show that, in some cases, this diffusion induced heterogeneity stabilizes the initially unstable fixed point via a Hopf bifurc…
We investigate the effect of repulsive coupling together with an attractive coupling in a network of nonlocally coupled oscillators. To understand the complex interaction between these two couplings we introduce a control parameter in the repulsive coupling which plays a crucial role in inducing distinct complex collective patterns. In particular, we show the emergence of various cluster chimera death states through a dynamically distinct transition route, namely the oscillatory cluster state and coherent oscillation death state as a function of the repulsive coupling in the presence of the at…
The revival of oscillation and maintaining rhythmicity in a network of coupled oscillators offer an open challenge to researchers as the cessation of oscillation often leads to a fatal system degradation and an irrecoverable malfunctioning in many physical, biological and physiological systems. Recently a general technique of restoration of rhythmicity in diffusively coupled networks of nonlinear oscillators has been proposed in [Zou et al. Nature Commun. 6:7709, 2015], where it is shown that a proper feedback parameter that controls the rate of diffusion can effectively revive oscillation fro…
Restoration of oscillation from an oscillation suppressed state in coupled oscillators is an important topic of research and has been studied widely in recent years. However, the same in the quantum regime has not been explored yet. Recent works established that under certain coupling conditions coupled quantum oscillators are susceptible to suppression of oscillations, such as amplitude death and oscillation death. In this paper, for the first time we demonstrate that quantum oscillation suppression states can be revoked and rhythmogenesis can be established in coupled quantum oscillators by …
The emergence of rich dynamical phenomena in coupled self-sustained oscillators, primarily synchronization and amplitude death, has attracted considerable interest in several fields of science and engineering. Here, we present a comprehensive theoretical study on the manifestation of these exquisite phenomena in a reduced-order model of two coupled Rijke tube oscillators, which are prototypical thermoacoustic oscillators. We characterize the dynamical behaviors of two such identical and non-identical oscillators by varying both system parameters (such as the uncoupled amplitudes and the natura…
Quenching of oscillations, namely amplitude and oscillations death, is an emerging phenomenon exhibited by many real-world complex systems. Here, we introduce a scheme that combines dissimilar couplings and repulsive feedback links for the interactions of Stuart Landau oscillators and analytically derives the conditions required for the amplitude death. Importantly, this analysis is independent of the network size, presents a generalized approach to calculate the stability conditions for various different coupling schemes, and befits for non-identical oscillators as well. Last, we discuss the …
The role of a new form of dynamic interaction is explored in a network of generic identical oscillators. The proposed design of dynamic coupling facilitates the onset of a plethora of asymptotic states including synchronous states, amplitude death states, oscillation death states, a mixed state (complete synchronized cluster and small amplitude unsynchronized domain), and bistable states (coexistence of two attractors). The dynamical transitions from the oscillatory to death state are characterized using an average temporal interaction approximation, which agrees with the numerical results in …
We report the emergence of stable amplitude chimeras and chimera death in a two-layer network where one layer has an ensemble of identical nonlinear oscillators interacting directly through local coupling and indirectly through dynamic agents that form the second layer. The nonlocality in the interaction among the dynamical agents in the second layer induces different types of chimera related dynamical states in the first layer. The amplitude chimeras developed in them are found to be extremely stable, while chimera death states are prevalent for increased coupling strengths. The results prese…
We study the effect of Kerr anharmonicity on the symmetry breaking phenomena of coupled quantum oscillators. We study two types of symmetry-breaking processes, namely the inhomogeneous steady state (or quantum oscillation death state) and quantum chimera state. Remarkably, it is found that Kerr nonlinearity hinders the process of symmetry-breaking in both the cases. We establish our results using direct simulation of quantum master equation and analysis of the stochastic semiclassical model. Interestingly, in the case of quantum oscillation death, an increase in the strength of Kerr nonlineari…
We introduce a new model consisting of globally coupled high-dimensional generalized limit-cycle oscillators, which explicitly incorporates the role of amplitude dynamics of individual units in the collective dynamics. In the limit of weak coupling, our model reduces to the $D$-dimensional Kuramoto phase model, akin to a similar classic construction of the well-known Kuramoto phase model from weakly coupled two-dimensional limit-cycle oscillators. For the practically important case of $D=3$, the incoherence of the model is rigorously proved to be stable for negative coupling $(K<0)$ but unstab…
Motivated from a wide range of applications, various methods to control synchronization in coupled oscillators have been proposed. Previous studies have demonstrated that global feedback typically induces three macroscopic behaviors: synchronization, desynchronization, and oscillation quenching. However, analyzing all of these transitions within a single theoretical framework is difficult, and thus the feedback effect is only partially understood in each framework. Herein, we analyze a model of globally coupled phase oscillators exposed to global feedback, which shows all of the typical macros…
Spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) is essential and plays a vital role many natural phenomena, including the formation of Turing pattern in organisms and complex patterns in brain dynamics. In this work, we investigate whether a set of coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators can exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking when the oscillators are interacting through dissimilar variables or conjugate coupling. We find the emergence of SSB state with coexisting distinct dynamical states in the parametric space and show how the system transits from symmetry breaking state to out-of-phase synchronized (OPS) …
Understanding the global dynamical behaviour of a network of coupled oscillators has been a topic of immense research in many fields of science and engineering. Various factors govern the resulting dynamical behaviour of such networks, including the number of oscillators and their coupling schemes. Although these factors are seldom significant in large populations, a small change in them can drastically affect the global behaviour in small populations. In this paper, we perform an experimental investigation on the effect of these factors on the coupled behaviour of a minimal network of candle-…
In a network of nonlocally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators with symmetry-breaking coupling, we study numerically, and explain analytically, a family of inhomogeneous steady states (oscillation death). They exhibit multi-cluster patterns, depending on the cluster distribution prescribed by the initial conditions. Besides stable oscillation death, we also find a regime of long transients asymptotically approaching synchronized oscillations. To explain these phenomena analytically in dependence on the coupling range and the coupling strength, we first use a mean-field approximation which works …
In this paper, an attempt has been made to understand the parametric excitation of a periodic orbit of nonlinear oscillator which can be a limit cycle, center or a slowly decaying center-type oscillation. For this a delay model is considered with nonlinear feedback oscillator defined in terms of Liénard oscillator description which can give rise to any one of the periodic orbits stated above. We have characterized the resonance and antiresonance behaviour for arbitrary nonlinear system from their stability and bifurcation analyses in reference to the standard delayed van der Pol system. An app…
For self-sustained oscillators subject to noise the coherence, understood as a constancy of the instantaneous oscillation frequency, is one of the primary characteristics. The delayed feedback has been previously revealed to be an efficient tool for controlling coherence of noise-driven self-sustained oscillator. The effect of the delayed feedback control on coherence is stronger for a longer delay time. Meanwhile, the instantaneous frequency of a noise-free oscillator can exhibit multistability for long delay time. The impact of the delay-feedback--induced multistability on the oscillation co…
Weakly coupled limit cycle oscillators can be reduced into a system of weakly coupled phase models. These phase models are helpful to analyze the synchronization phenomena. For example, a phase model of two oscillators has a one-dimensional differential equation for the evolution of the phase difference. The existence of fixed points determines frequency-locking solutions. By treating each oscillator as a black-box possessing a single input and a single output, one can investigate various control algorithms to change the synchronization of the oscillators. In particular, we are interested in a…
We present a practical method to obtain bounds for the oscillation minima and maxima of large classes of biochemical oscillator models that generate oscillations through a negative feedback. These bounds depend on the feedback nonlinearity and are independent of explicit or effective feedback delays. For specific systems, we obtain explicit analytical expressions for the bounds and demonstrate their effectiveness in comparison with numerical simulations.
In this article, we propose a very efficient technique to enhance the dynamical robustness for a network of mean-field coupled oscillators experiencing aging transition. In particular, we present a control mechanism based on delayed negative self-feedback, which can effectively enhance dynamical activities in a mean-field coupled network of active and inactive oscillators. Even for a small value of delay, robustness gets enhanced to a significant level. In our proposed scheme, the enhancing effect is more pronounced for strong coupling. To our surprise even if all the oscillators perturbed to …
In-phase synchronization is a special case of synchronous behavior when coupled oscillators have the same phases for any time moments. Such behavior appears naturally for nearly identical coupled limit-cycle oscillators when the coupling strength is greatly above the synchronization threshold. We investigate the general class of nearly identical complex oscillators connected into network in a context of a phase reduction approach. By treating each oscillator as a black-box possessing a single-input single-output, we provide a practical and simply realizable control algorithm to attain the in-p…
In this technical note, we propose a practicable quantized sampled velocity data coupling protocol for synchronization of a set of harmonic oscillators. The coupling protocol is designed in a quantized way via interconnecting the velocities encoded by a uniform quantizer with a zooming parameter in either a fixed or an adjustable form over a directed communication network. We establish sufficient conditions for the networked harmonic oscillators to converge to a bounded neighborhood of the synchronized orbits with a fixed zooming parameter. We ensure the oscillators to achieve synchronization …
We study synchronization of a quantum van der Pol oscillator with a harmonic drive and demonstrate that quantum synchronization can be enhanced by performing continuous homodyne measurement on an additional bath linearly coupled to the oscillator and applying feedback control to the oscillator. The phase coherence of the oscillator is increased by reducing quantum fluctuations via the continuous measurement, whereas the measurement backaction inevitably induces fluctuations around the phase-locking point. We propose a simple feedback policy for suppressing measurement-induced fluctuations by a…
The role of counter-rotating oscillators in an ensemble of coexisting co- and counter-rotating oscillators is examined by increasing the proportion of the latter. The phenomenon of aging transition was identified at a critical value of the ratio of the counter-rotating oscillators, which was otherwise realized only by increasing the number of inactive oscillators to a large extent. The effect of the mean-field feedback strength in the symmetry preserving coupling is also explored. The parameter space of aging transition was increased abruptly even for a feeble decrease in the feedback strength…
Synchronization and emergence of a collective mode is a general phenomenon, frequently observed in ensembles of coupled self-sustained oscillators of various natures. In several circumstances, in particular in cases of neurological pathologies, this state of the active medium is undesirable. Destruction of this state by a specially designed stimulation is a challenge of high clinical relevance. Typically, the precise effect of an external action on the ensemble is unknown, since the microscopic description of the oscillators and their interactions are not available. We show, that desynchroniza…
