In this paper, an attempt has been made to understand the parametric excitation of a periodic orbit of nonlinear oscillator which can be a limit cycle, center or a slowly decaying center-type oscillation. For this a delay model is considered with nonlinear feedback oscillator defined in terms of Liénard oscillator description which can give rise to any one of the periodic orbits stated above. We have characterized the resonance and antiresonance behaviour for arbitrary nonlinear system from their stability and bifurcation analyses in reference to the standard delayed van der Pol system. An approximate analytical solution using Krylov--Bogoliubov (K-B) averaging method is utilised to recognize the sub-harmonic resonance and antiresonance, and average energy consumption per cycle. Direction of Hopf bifurcation and stability of the periodic solution bifurcating from the trivial fixed point are carried out using normal form and center manifold theory. The parametric excitation is also thoroughly investigated via bifurcation analysis to find the role of the control parameters like time delay, damping and nonlinear terms.
In the context of a spatially extended model for the electrical activity in a pituitary lactotroph cell line, we establish that two delayed bifurcation phenomena from ODEs ---folded node canards and slow passage through Hopf bifurcations--- persist in the presence of diffusion. For canards, the single cell (ODE) model exhibits canard-induced bursting. Numerical simulations of the PDE reveal rich spatio-temporal canard dynamics, and the transitions between different bursts are mediated by spatio-temporal maximal canards. The ODE model also exhibits delayed loss of stability due to slow passage …
The aim of this work is to investigate the qualitative behaviour of a financial dynamical system which contains a time delay. We investigate the dynamic response of this system of which variables are interest rate, investment demand, price index and average profit margin. We perform a stability analysis at the fixed points and show that the system undergoes a Hopf bifurcation. The bifurcation analyses are supported by numerical simulations.
Using the model of a generalized Van der Pol oscillator in the regime of subcritical Hopf bifurcation we investigate the influence of time delay on noise-induced oscillations. It is shown that for appropriate choices of time delay either suppression or enhancement of coherence resonance can de achieved. Analytical calculations are combined with numerical simulations and experiments on an electronic circuit.
In a previous paper, the authors developed a method for computing normal forms of dynamical systems with a coupled cell network structure. We now apply this theory to one-parameter families of homogeneous feed-forward chains with 2-dimensional cells. Our main result is that Hopf bifurcations in such families generically generate branches of periodic solutions with amplitudes growing like $λ^{1/2}$, $λ^{1/6}$, $λ^{1/18}$, etc. Such amplified Hopf branches were previously found by others in a subclass of feed-forward networks with three cells, first under a normal form assumption and later by ex…
Our concern is the study of degenerate Hopf bifurcation of smooth planar dynamical systems near isolated singular points. To do so, we propose to split up the definition of degeneracy into two types. Degeneracy of first kind shall means that no limit cycle surrounding the steady state can emerge after or before the critical point, with the possible emergence of limit cycles surrounding the point at infinity. Degeneracy of second kind shall means that either several limit cycles or semistable cycles as a limiting case, emerge surrounding the steady state super or subcritically. In degenerate bi…
Dynamical properties of ultradiscrete Hopf bifurcation, similar to those of the standard Hopf bifurcation, are discussed by proposing a simple model of ultradiscrete equations with max-plus algebra. In ultradiscrete Hopf bifurcation, limit cycles emerge depending on the value of a bifurcation parameter in the model. The limit cycles are composed of a finite number of discrete states. Furthermore, the model exhibits excitability. The model is derived from two different dynamical models with Hopf bifurcation by means of ultradiscretization; it is a candidate for a normal form for ultradiscrete H…
In this paper a four-dimensional hyperchaotic system with only one equilibrium is considered and its double Hopf bifurcations are investigated. The general post-bifurcation and stability analysis are carried out using the normal form of the system obtained via the method of multiple scales. The dynamics of the orbits predicted through the normal form comprises possible regimes of periodic solutions, two-period tori, and three-period tori in parameter space. Moreover, we show how the hyperchaotic synchronization of this system can be realized via an adaptive control scheme. Numerical simulation…
This paper presents an investigation of the dynamics of two coupled non-identical FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons with delayed synaptic connection. We consider coupling strength and time delay as bifurcation parameters, and try to classify all possible dynamics which is fairly rich. The neural system exhibits a unique rest point or three ones for the different values of coupling strength by employing the pitchfork bifurcation of non-trivial rest point. The asymptotic stability and possible Hopf bifurcations of the trivial rest point are studied by analyzing the corresponding characteristic equation. H…
This is a preliminary study for bifurcation in fractional order dynamical systems. Stability, persistence and hopf bifurcation are studied. Some studies are also done for functional equations.
This paper studies various Hopf bifurcations in the two-dimensional plane Poiseuille problem. For several values of the wavenumber $α$, we obtain the branch of periodic flows which are born at the Hopf bifurcation of the laminar flow. It is known that, taking $α\approx1$, the branch of periodic solutions has several Hopf bifurcations to quasi-periodic orbits. For the first bifurcation, previous calculations seem to indicate that the bifurcating quasi-periodic flows are stable and go backwards with respect to the Reynolds number, $Re$. By improving the precision of previous works we find that t…
Planar switched system with dead-zone are analyzed. In particular, we consider the effects of perturbation of the linear control law from purely positional to position-velocity control. This type of perturbation leads to a novel Hopf-like discontinuity induced bifurcation. We show that this bifurcation leads to the creation of small scale limit cycle attractors, which scale as the square root of the bifurcation parameter. We note that a Hopf-like bifurcation analyzed in non-smooth systems is characterized by a linear scaling law. We then investigate numerically a planar switched system with po…
The loss of stability of induction motor controlled by Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) is a matter of great concern of operators and design engineers. This paper reports indices to detect and predict stability problem such as system oscillations. Oscillations as a result of loss of stability, due to Hopf bifurcation, for different parameter values of IFOC motor are studied using the proposed indices.
A delayed differential equation modelling a single neuron with inertial term is considered in this paper. Hopf bifurcation is studied by using the normal form theory of retarded functional differential equations. When adopting a nonmonotonic activation function, chaotic behavior is observed. Phase plots, waveform plots, and power spectra are presented to confirm the chaoticity.
In this paper, we consider the nonlinear dynamical behaviors of some tabu leaning neuron models. We first consider a tabu learning single neuron model. By choosing the memory decay rate as a bifurcation parameter, we prove that Hopf bifurcation occurs in the neuron. The stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions and the direction of the Hopf bifurcation are determined by applying the normal form theory. We give a numerical example to verify the theoretical analysis. Then, we demonstrate the chaotic behavior in such a neuron with sinusoidal external input, via computer simulations. Finally…
Hopf bifurcations have been studied perturbatively under two broad headings, viz., super-critical and sub-critical. The criteria for occurrences of such bifurcations have been investigated using the renormalization group. The procedure has been described in details for both two and three dimensions and has been applied to several important models, including those by Lorenz and Rossler.
We investigate the steady-state solution and its bifurcations in time-delay systems with band-limited feedback. This is a first step in a rigorous study concerning the effects of AC-coupled components in nonlinear devices with time-delayed feedback. We show that the steady state is globally stable for small feedback gain and that local stability is lost, generically, through a Hopf bifurcation for larger feedback gain. We provide simple criteria that determine whether the Hopf bifurcation is supercritical or subcritical based on the knowledge of the first three terms in the Taylor-expansion of…
We investigate the effect of time delay on the dynamical model of love. The local stability analysis proves that the time delay on the return function can cause a Hopf bifurcation and a cyclic love dynamics. The condition for the occurrence of the Hopf bifurcation is also clarified. Through a numerical bifurcation analysis, we confirm the theoretical predictions on the Hopf bifurcation and obtain a universal bifurcation structure consisting of a supercritical Hopf bifurcation and a cascade of period-doubling bifurcations, i.e., a period doubling route to chaos.
The slow passage through a Hopf bifurcation leads to the delayed appearance of large amplitude oscillations. We construct a smooth scalar feedback control which suppresses the delay and causes the system to follow a stable equilibrium branch. This feature can be used to detect in time the loss of stability of an ageing device. As a by-product, we obtain results on the slow passage through a bifurcation with double zero eigenvalue, described by a singularly perturbed cubic Lienard equation.
We apply the synergetic elimination procedure for the stable modes in nonlinear delay systems close to a dynamical instability and derive the normal form for the delay-induced Hopf bifurcation in the Wright equation. The resulting periodic orbit is confirmed by numerical simulations.
An equilibrium of a planar, piecewise-$C^1$, continuous system of differential equations that crosses a curve of discontinuity of the Jacobian of its vector field can undergo a number of discontinuous or border-crossing bifurcations. Here we prove that if the eigenvalues of the Jacobian limit to $λ_L \pm {\rm i} ω_L$ on one side of the discontinuity and $-λ_R \pm {\rm i} ω_R$ on the other, with $λ_L, λ_R >0$, and the quantity $ Λ= λ_L / ω_L -λ_R / ω_R $ is nonzero, then a periodic orbit is created or destroyed as the equilibrium crosses the discontinuity. This bifurcation is analogous to the c…
Using a normal form approach described in a previous paper we derive an amplitude equation for a reaction-diffusion system with a Hopf bifurcation coupled to one or more slow real eigenmodes. The new equation is useful even for systems where the actual bifurcation underlying the description cannot be realized, which is typical of chemical systems. For a fold-Hopf bifurcation, the equation successfully handles actual chemical reactions where the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation fails. For a realistic chemical model of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, we compare solutions to the reaction-diffu…
Hamiltonian bifurcations in the context of noncanonical Hamiltonian matter models are described. First, a large class of 1 + 1 Hamiltonian multi-fluid models is considered. These models have linear dynamics with discrete spectra, when linearized about homogeneous equilibria, and these spectra have counterparts to the steady state and Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcations when equilibrium parameters are varied. Examples of fluid sound waves and plasma and gravitational streaming are treated in detail. Next, using these 1 + 1 examples as a guide, a large class of 2 + 1 Hamiltonian systems is introduced,…
We show that Pyragas delayed feedback control can stabilize an unstable periodic orbit (UPO) that arises from a generic subcritical Hopf bifurcation of a stable equilibrium in an n-dimensional dynamical system. This extends results of Fiedler et al. [PRL 98, 114101 (2007)], who demonstrated that such feedback control can stabilize the UPO associated with a two-dimensional subcritical Hopf normal form. Pyragas feedback requires an appropriate choice of a feedback gain matrix for stabilization, as well as knowledge of the period of the targeted UPO. We apply feedback in the directions tangent to…
The problem of self-tuning a system to the Hopf bifurcation in the presence of noise and periodic external forcing is discussed. We find that the response of the system has a non-monotonic dependence on the noise-strength, and displays an amplified response which is more pronounced for weaker signals. The observed effect is to be distinguished from stochastic resonance. For the feedback we have studied, the unforced self-tuned Hopf oscillator in the presence of fluctuations exhibits sharp peaks in its spectrum. The implications of our general results are briefly discussed in the context of sou…
We examine the dynamics of solutions to nonlinear Schrodinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equations that arise due to Hamiltonian Hopf (HH) bifurcations--the collision of pairs of eigenvalues on the imaginary axis. To this end, we use inverse scattering to construct localized potentials for this model which lead to HH bifurcations in a predictable manner. We perform a formal reduction from the partial differential equations (PDE) to a small system of ordinary differential equations (ODE). We show numerically that the behavior of the PDE is well-approximated by that of the ODE and that both display Hamilt…
