We investigate coupled identical phase oscillators with scale-free distribution of coupling strength. It is shown that partially locked states can occur due to the inhomogeneity in coupling and some properties of the coupling function. Various quantities of the partially locked states are computed through a self-consistency argument and the values show good agreement with simulation results.
We study the phase synchronization between collective rhythms of fully locked oscillator groups. For weakly interacting groups of two oscillators with global sinusoidal coupling, we analytically derive the collective phase coupling function, which determines the dynamics of the collective phase difference between the groups. We demonstrate that the groups can exhibit anti-phase collective synchronization in spite of microscopic in-phase external coupling and vice versa.
The formalism of complex networks is extensively employed to describe the dynamics of interacting agents in several applications. The features of the connections among the nodes in a network are not always provided beforehand, hence the problem of appropriately inferring them often arises. Here, we present a method to reconstruct directed and weighted topologies (REDRAW) of networks of heterogeneous phase-locked nonlinear oscillators. We ultimately plan on using REDRAW to infer the interaction structure in human ensembles engaged in coordination tasks, and give insights into the overall behavi…
We considered the phase coherence dynamics in a Two-Frequency and Two-Coupling (TFTC) model of coupled oscillators, where coupling strength and natural oscillator frequencies for individual oscillators may assume one of two values (positive/negative). The bimodal distributions for the coupling strengths and frequencies are either correlated or uncorrelated. To study how correlation affects phase coherence, we analyzed the TFTC model by means of numerical simulations and exact dimensional reduction methods allowing to study the collective dynamics in terms of local order parameters. The competi…
The functions of many networked systems in physics, biology or engineering rely on a coordinated or synchronized dynamics of its constituents. In power grids for example, all generators must synchronize and run at the same frequency and their phases need to appoximately lock to guarantee a steady power flow. Here, we analyze the existence and multitude of such phase-locked states. Focusing on edge and cycle flows instead of the nodal phases we derive rigorous results on the existence and number of such states. Generally, multiple phase-locked states coexist in networks with strong edges, long …
We consider the inertial Kuramoto model of $N$ globally coupled oscillators characterized by both their phase and angular velocity, in which there is a time delay in the interaction between the oscillators. Besides the academic interest, we show that the model can be related to a network of phase-locked loops widely used in electronic circuits for generating a stable frequency at multiples of an input frequency. We study the model for a generic choice of the natural frequency distribution of the oscillators, to elucidate how a synchronized phase bifurcates from an incoherent phase as the coupl…
We present a spatiotemporally mode-locked Mamyshev oscillator. A wide variety of multimode mode-locked states, with varying degrees of spatiotemporal coupling, are observed. We find that some control of the modal content of the output beam is possible through the cavity design. Comparison of simulations to experiments indicates that spatiotemporal mode-locking is enabled by nonlinear intermodal interactions and spatial filtering, along with the Mamyshev mechanism. This work represents a first exploration of spatiotemporal mode-locking in an oscillator with the Mamyshev saturable absorber.
We study synchronization in a Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators with a bi-harmonic coupling function, in the thermodynamic limit of large populations. We develop a method for an analytic solution of self-consistent equations describing uniformly rotating complex order parameters, both for single-branch (one possible state of locked oscillators) and multi-branch (two possible values of locked phases) entrainment. We show that synchronous states coexist with the neutrally linearly stable asynchronous regime. The latter has a finite life time for finite ensembles, this time gro…
We introduce a new model consisting of globally coupled high-dimensional generalized limit-cycle oscillators, which explicitly incorporates the role of amplitude dynamics of individual units in the collective dynamics. In the limit of weak coupling, our model reduces to the $D$-dimensional Kuramoto phase model, akin to a similar classic construction of the well-known Kuramoto phase model from weakly coupled two-dimensional limit-cycle oscillators. For the practically important case of $D=3$, the incoherence of the model is rigorously proved to be stable for negative coupling $(K<0)$ but unstab…
The Kuramoto model is a canonical model for understanding phase-locking phenomenon. It is well-understood that, in the usual mean-field scaling, full phase-locking is unlikely and that it is partially phase-locked states that are important in applications. Despite this, while there has been much attention given to the existence and stability of fully phase-locked states in the finite N Kuramoto model, the partially phase-locked states have received much less attention. In this paper, we present two related results. Firstly, we derive an analytical criterion that, for sufficiently strong coupli…
This paper addresses the behavior of large systems of heterogeneous, globally coupled oscillators each of which is described by the generic Landau-Stuart equation, which incorporates both phase and amplitude dynamics of individual oscillators. One goal of our paper is to investigate the effect of a spread in the amplitude growth parameter of the oscillators and of the effect of a homogeneous nonlinear frequency shift. Both of these effects are of potential relevance to recently reported experiments. Our second goal is to gain further understanding of the macroscopic system dynamics at large co…
We consider a general model for a network of oscillators with time delayed, circulant coupling. We use the theory of weakly coupled oscillators to reduce the system of delay differential equations to a phase model where the time delay enters as a phase shift. We use the phase model to study the existence and stability of cluster solutions. Cluster solutions are phase locked solutions where the oscillators separate into groups. Oscillators within a group are synchronized while those in different groups are phase-locked. We give model independent existence and stability results for symmetric clu…
In this article, we analyze a nonlocal ring network of adaptively coupled phase oscillators. We observe a variety of frequency-synchronized states such as phase-locked, multicluster and solitary states. For an important subclass of the phase-locked solutions, the rotating waves, we provide a rigorous stability analysis. This analysis shows a strong dependence of their stability on the coupling structure and the wavenumber which is a remarkable difference to an all-to-all coupled network. Despite the fact that solitary states have been observed in a plethora of dynamical systems, the mechanisms…
We report an interesting symmetry-breaking transition in coupled identical oscillators, namely the continuous transition from homogeneous to inhomogeneous limit cycle oscillations. The observed transition is the oscillatory analog of the Turing-type symmetry-breaking transition from amplitude death (i.e., stable homogeneous steady state) to oscillation death (i.e., stable inhomogeneous steady state). This novel transition occurs in the parametric zone of occurrence of rhythmogenesis and oscillation death as a consequence of the presence of local filtering in the coupling path. We consider para…
Motivated by phenomena related to biological systems such as the synchronously flashing swarms of fireflies, we investigate a network of phase oscillators evolving under the generalized Kuramoto model with inertia. A distance-dependent, spatial coupling between the oscillators is considered. Zeroth and first order kernel functions with finite kernel radii were chosen to investigate the effect of local interactions. The hysteretic dynamics of the synchronization depending on the coupling parameter was analyzed for different kernel radii. Numerical investigations demonstrate that (1) locally loc…
We demonstrate that strongly asymmetric limit cycles can be observed in the system of three identical ring oscillators (3-gene networks known as Repressilators) globally coupled by signal molecule diffusion added to the model in a way like the known bacterial "quorum-sensing" mechanism. These cycles are stable over a wide interval of the coupling strengths where they expel the dominant hyperchaotic regime existing in three Repressilators in very large areas of parameters. The bifurcations of the inhomogeneous limit cycle, with a high-amplitude orbit for one oscillator and two low-amplitude ide…
We study synchronization patterns in repulsively coupled Kuramoto oscillators and focus on the impact of disorder in the natural frequencies. Among other choices we select the grid size and topology in a way that we observe a dynamically induced dimensional reduction with a continuum of attractors as long as the natural frequencies are uniformly chosen. When we introduce disorder in these frequencies, we find limit cycles with periods that are orders of magnitude longer than the natural frequencies of individual oscillators. Moreover we identify sequences of temporary patterns of phase-locked …
We study rare phase slips due to noise in synchronized Kuramoto oscillator networks. In the small-noise limit, we demonstrate that slips occur via large fluctuations to saddle phase-locked states. For tree topologies, slips appear between subgraphs that become disconnected at a saddle-node bifurcation, where phase-locked states lose stability generically. This pattern is demonstrated for sparse networks with several examples. Scaling laws are derived and compared for different tree topologies. On the other hand, for dense networks slips occur between oscillators on the edges of the frequency d…
We propose a novel and systematic method for coarse-graining oscillator networks described by phase equations. Our coarse-graining method enables us to obtain the closed coarse-grained equations for a few effective eigenmodes, which is based on the eigenvalue problem of the linearized system around the phase-locked solution and a nonlinear transformation. We demonstrate our method by applying it to oscillator dynamics on a random graph, which exhibits a saddle-node bifurcation at the bifurcation point.
We introduce a model to study the effect of degree-frequency correlations on synchronization in networks of coupled oscillators. Analyzing this model, we find several remarkable characteristics. We find a stationary synchronized state that is (i) universal, i.e., the degree of synchrony, as measured by a global order parameter, is independent of network topology, and (ii) fully phase-locked, i.e., all oscillators become simultaneously phase-locked despite having different natural frequencies. This state separates qualitatively different behaviors for two other classes of correlations where, re…
We analyze a model for the synchronization of nonlinear oscillators due to reactive coupling and nonlinear frequency pulling motivated by the physics of arrays of nanoscale oscillators. We study the model for the mean field case of all-to-all coupling, deriving results for the onset of synchronization as the coupling or nonlinearity increase, and the fully locked state when all the oscillators evolve with the same frequency.
We study the quantum manifestations of homogeneous and inhomogeneous oscillation suppression states in coupled identical quantum oscillators. We consider quantum van der Pol oscillators coupled via weighted mean-field diffusive coupling and using the formalism of open quantum system we show that depending upon the coupling and the density of mean-field, two types of quantum amplitude death occurs, namely squeezed and nonsqueezed quantum amplitude death. Surprisingly, we find that the inhomogeneous oscillation suppression state (or the oscillation death state) does not occur in the quantum osci…
Networks of coupled phase oscillators play an important role in the analysis of emergent collective phenomena. In this article, we introduce generalized $m$-splay states constituting a special subclass of phase-locked states with vanishing $m$th order parameter. Such states typically manifest incoherent dynamics, and they often create high-dimensional families of solutions (splay manifolds). For a general class of phase oscillator networks, we provide explicit linear stability conditions for splay states and exemplify our results with the well-known Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model. Importantly, our s…
We review the theory of weakly coupled oscillators for smooth systems. We then examine situations where application of the standard theory falls short and illustrate how it can be extended. Specific examples are given to non-smooth systems with applications to the Izhikevich neuron. We then introduce the idea of isostable reduction to explore behaviors that the weak coupling paradigm cannot explain. In an additional example, we show how bifurcations that change the stability of phase locked solutions in a pair of identical coupled neurons can be understood using the notion of isostable reducti…
