We study the emergent dynamics of quantum self-sustained oscillators induced by the simultaneous presence of attraction and repulsion in the coupling path. We consider quantum Stuart-Landau oscillators under attractive-repulsive coupling and construct the corresponding quantum master equation in the Lindblad form. We discover an interesting symmetry-breaking transition from quantum limit cycle oscillation to quantum inhomogeneous steady state; This transition is contrary to the previously known symmetry-breaking transition from quantum homogeneous to inhomogeneous steady state. The result is supported by the analysis on the noisy classical model of the quantum system in the weak quantum regime. Remarkably, we find the generation of entanglement associated with the symmetry-breaking transition that has no analogue in the classical domain. This study will enrich our understanding of the collective behaviors shown by coupled oscillators in the quantum domain.
Generalized symmetric Woods-Saxon potential (GSWSP) energy well has a significant importance not only in nuclear physics but also in atomic and molecular physics. A GSWSP energy well takes the surface effects (describing e.g. repulsive interaction at the nucleus edge in nuclear physics) into account in addition to the volume effect. These effects can be, in general, both repulsive or attractive. In this paper, the recently obtained bound state solution of the Klein-Gordon equation with vector and scalar GSWSP energy in the spin symmetry limit is used to calculate a neutral pion's energy spectr…
We discuss the Casimir effect for boundary conditions involving perfect electromagnetic conductors (PEMCs). Based on the corresponding reciprocal Green's tensor we construct the Green's tensor for two perfectly reflecting plates with magnetoelectric coupling (non-reciprocal media) within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. We calculate the Casimir force between two PEMC plates in terms of the PEMC parameter M and the duality transformation angle $θ$ resulting in a universal analytic expression that connects the attractive Casimir force with the repulsive Boyer force. We relat…
Repulsive and attractive interactions usually lead to very different physics. Striking exceptions exist in the dynamics of driven-dissipative quantum systems. For the example of a photonic Bose-Hubbard dimer, we establish a one-to-one mapping relating the cases of onsite repulsion and attraction. We prove that the mapping is valid for an entire class of Markovian open quantum systems with time-reversal invariant Hamiltonian and physically meaningful inverse-sign Hamiltonian. To underline the broad applicability of the mapping, we illustrate the one-to-one correspondence between the nonequilibr…
The ladder operators in harmonic oscillator are a well-known strong tool for various problems in physics. In the same sense, it is sometimes expected to handle the problems of repulsive harmonic oscillator in a similar way to the ladder operators in harmonic oscillators, though their analytic solutions are well known. In this paper, we discuss a simple algebraic way to introduce the ladder operators of the repulsive harmonic oscillators, which can reproduce well-known analytic solutions. Applying this formalism, we discuss the charged particles in a constant electric field in relation to the S…
The driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model can be experimentally realized with either negative or positive onsite detunings, inter-site hopping energies, and onsite interaction energies. Here we use one-dimensional matrix product density operators to perform a fully quantum investigation of the dependence of the non-equilibrium steady states of this model on the signs of these parameters. Due to a symmetry in the Lindblad master equation, we find that simultaneously changing the sign of the interaction energies, hopping energies, and chemical potentials leaves the local boson number distributio…
We explore the interplay between tunneling and interatomic interactions in the dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction. We tune the scattering length of an atomic $^{39}$K Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well trap to investigate regimes inaccessible to other superconducting or superfluid systems. In the limit of small-amplitude oscillations, we study the transition from Rabi to plasma oscillations by crossing over from attractive to repulsive interatomic interactions. We observe a critical slowing down in the oscillation frequency by increasing the strength of an attractive inte…
Weyl semimetals are a class of topological materials that exhibit a bulk Hall effect due to time-reversal symmetry breaking. We show that for the idealized semi-infinite case, the Casimir force between two identical Weyl semimetals is repulsive at short range and attractive at long range. Considering plates of finite thickness, we can reduce the size of the long-range attraction even making it repulsive for all distances when thin enough. In the thin-film limit, we study the appearance of an attractive Casimir force at shorter distances due to the longitudinal conductivity. Magnetic field, thi…
We derive upper and lower bounds on the Casimir--Polder force between an anisotropic dipolar body and a macroscopic body separated by vacuum via algebraic properties of Maxwell's equations. These bounds require only a coarse characterization of the system---the material composition of the macroscopic object, the polarizability of the dipole, and any convenient partition between the two objects---to encompass all structuring possibilities. We find that the attractive Casimir--Polder force between a polarizable dipole and a uniform planar semi-infinite bulk medium always comes within 10% of the …

We study the possibility of obtaining a repulsive vacuum-induced force for a magnetic point particle near a surface. Considering the toy model of a particle with an electric-dipole transition and a large magnetic spin, we analyze the interplay between the repulsive magnetic-dipole and the attractive electric-dipole contributions to the total Casimir-Polder force. Particularly noting that the magnetic-dipole interaction is longer-ranged than the electric-dipole due to the difference in their respective characteristic transition frequencies, we find a regime where the repulsive magnetic contribu…
The devil's staircase is a fractal structure that characterizes the ground state of one-dimensional classical lattice gases with long-range repulsive convex interactions. Its plateaus mark regions of stability for specific filling fractions which are controlled by a chemical potential. Typically such staircase has an explicit particle-hole symmetry, i.e., the staircase at more than half-filling can be trivially extracted from the one at less than half filling by exchanging the roles of holes and particles. Here we introduce a quantum spin chain with competing short-range attractive and long-ra…
