We study the interaction-induced localization -- the so-called self-trapping -- of a neutral impurity atom immersed in a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Based on a Hartree description of the BEC we show that -- unlike repulsive impurities -- attractive impurities have a singular ground state in 3d and shrink to a point-like state in 2d as the coupling approaches a critical value. Moreover, we find that the density of the BEC increases markedly in the vicinity of attractive impurities in 1d and 2d, which strongly enhances inelastic collisions between atoms in the BEC. These collisions result in a loss of BEC atoms and possibly of the localized impurity itself.
We examine the properties of a quantum reflection trap when particle-interaction is included. We explore the influence of the particle-interaction on the trapping for different regimes: repulsive particle-interaction and attractive particle-interaction in its stable and unstable limit. With variational techniques, we calculate the phase-diagram of the quatum reflection trap and determine the stable and unstable regimes of the system.
Weak potential wells (or traps) in one and two dimensions, and the potential wells slightly deeper than the critical ones in three dimensions, feature shallow bound states with localization length much larger than the well radii. We address a simple fundamental question of how many repulsively interacting bosons can be localized by such traps. We find that under rather generic conditions, for both weakly and strongly repulsive particles, in two and three dimensions--but not in one-dimension!--the potential well can trap infinitely many bosons. For example, even hard-core repulsive interactions…
We study the quantum dynamics of the two impurities in a trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We explore the effect of impurity-BEC and impurity-impurity interaction strengths on the dynamics of impurities inside the Bose-Einstein condensate. By studying the auto-correlation function of impurities and the BEC, we analyze and quantify the trapping of impurities inside the BEC. We find out that for the small value of inter-species coupling strength the BEC starts to oscillate inside the trap. For mild coupling strengths, attractive and repulsive impurities are captured a…
We propose a scheme to tailor nanostructured trapping potentials for ultracold atoms. Our trapping scheme combines an engineered extension of repulsive optical dipole forces at short distances and attractive Casimir-Polder forces at long distances between an atom and a nanostructured surface. This extended dipole force takes advantage of excited-state dressing by plasmonically-enhanced intensity to doubly dress the ground state and create a strongly repulsive potential with spatially tunable characteristics. In this work, we show that, under realistic experimental conditions, this method can b…
We elaborate a method for the creation of two- and one-dimensional (2D and 1D) self-trapped modes in binary spin-orbit (SO)-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with the contact repulsive interaction, whose local strength grows fast enough from the center to periphery. In particular, an exact semi-vortex (SV) solution is found for the anti-Gaussian radial-modulation profile. The exact modes are included in the numerically produced family of SV solitons. Other families, in the form of mixed modes(MMs), as well as excited state of SVs and MMs, are produced too. While the excited states are u…
We investigate cold bosonic impurity atoms trapped in a vortex lattice formed by condensed bosons of another species. We describe the dynamics of the impurities by a bosonic Hubbard model containing occupation-dependent parameters to capture the effects of strong impurity-impurity interactions. These include both a repulsive direct interaction and an attractive effective interaction mediated by the BEC. The occupation dependence of these two competing interactions drastically affects the Hubbard model phase diagram, including causing the disappearance of some Mott lobes
We explore repulsive Fermi polarons in one-dimensional harmonically trapped few-body mixtures of ultracold atoms using as a case example a $^6$Li-$^{40}$K mixture. A characterization of these quasiparticle-like states, whose appearance is signalled in the impurity's radiofrequency spectrum, is achieved by extracting their lifetime and residua. Increasing the number of $^{40}$K impurities leads to the occurrence of both single and multiple polarons that are entangled with their environment. An interaction-dependent broadening of the spectral lines is observed suggesting the presence of induced …
We calculate the spatial distributions and the dynamics of a few-body two-component strongly interacting Bose gas confined to an effectively one-dimensional trapping potential. We describe the densities for each component in the trap for different interaction and population imbalances. We calculate the time evolution of the system and show that, for a certain ratio of interactions, the minority population travels through the system as an effective wave packet.
We investigate the localization pattern of interacting impurities, which are trapped in a lattice potential and couple to a Bose gas. For small interspecies interaction strengths, the impurities populate the energetically lowest Bloch state or localize separately in different wells with one extra particle being delocalized over all the wells, depending on the lattice depth. In contrast, for large interspecies interaction strengths we find that due to the fractional filling of the lattice and the competition of the repulsive contact interaction between the impurities and the attractive interact…
Quantum vacuum forces dictate the interaction between individual atoms and dielectric surfaces at nanoscale distances. For example, their large strengths typically overwhelm externally applied forces, which makes it challenging to controllably interface cold atoms with nearby nanophotonic systems. Here, we show that it is possible to tailor the vacuum forces themselves to provide strong trapping potentials. The trapping scheme takes advantage of the attractive ground state potential and adiabatic dressing with an excited state whose potential is engineered to be resonantly enhanced and repulsi…
We study the correlated dynamics of few interacting bosonic impurities immersed in a one-dimensional harmonically trapped bosonic environment. The mixture is exposed to a time-dependent impurity-medium interaction pulse moving it across the relevant phase separation boundary. For modulation frequencies smaller than the trapping one, the system successively transits through the miscible/immiscible phases according to the driving of the impurity-medium interactions. For strong modulations, and driving from the miscible to the immiscible regime, a significant fraction of the impurities is expelle…
We unravel the periodically driven dynamics of two repulsively interacting bosonic impurities within a bosonic bath upon considering either the impact of a finite pulse or a continuous shaking of the impurities harmonic trap. Following a pulse driving of initially miscible components we reveal a variety of dynamical response regimes depending on the driving frequency. At resonant drivings the impurities decouple from their host while if exposed to a high frequency driving they remain trapped in the bosonic gas. For continuous shaking we showcase that in the resonantly driven regime the impurit…
We consider a strongly repulsive fermionic gas in a two-dimensional optical lattice confined by a harmonic trapping potential. To address the strongly repulsive regime, we consider the $t-J$ Hamiltonian. The presence of the harmonic trapping potential enables the stabilization of coexisting and competing phases. In particular, at low temperatures, this allows the realization of a d-wave superfluid region surrounded by purely (gapless) normal edges. Solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and comparing with the local density approximation, we show that the proximity to the Mott insulator is …
We unravel the ground state properties and the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of two bosonic impurities immersed in an one-dimensional fermionic environment by applying a quench of the impurity-medium interaction strength. In the ground state, the impurities and the Fermi sea are phase-separated for strong impurity-medium repulsions while they experience a localization tendency around the trap center for large attractions. We demonstrate the presence of attractive induced interactions mediated by the host for impurity-medium couplings of either sign and analyze the competition between induce…
The elementary excitations of a fractional quantum Hall liquid are quasiparticles or quasiholes which are neither bosons nor fermions, but so-called anyons. Here we study impurity particles immersed in a quantum Hall liquid which bind to the quasiholes via repulsive interactions with the liquid. We show that the angular momentum of an impurity is given by the multiple of a fractional "quantum" of angular momentum, and can directly be observed from the impurity density. In a system with several impurities bound to quasiholes, their total angular momentum interpolates between the values for free…
We find a set of exact solutions of coherent bright solitons in the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a harmonic potential, by using a Gaussian laser well (barrier) with oscillating position to balance the repulsive (attractive) interatomic interaction. The bright solitons do not deform in propagation and are controlled accurately by the laser driving which resonates with the trapping potential. The solitonic motion is more stable for the repulsive BEC than that of the attractive BEC. The results reveal a different kind of soliton trains compared to that repo…
It is well-known that increasing the nonlinearity due to repulsive atomic interactions in a double-well Bose-Einstein condensate suppresses quantum tunnelling between the two sites. Here we find analogous behaviour in the dynamical tunnelling of a Bose-Einstein condensate between period-one resonances in a single driven potential well. For small nonlinearities we find unhindered tunnelling between the resonances, but with an increasing period as compared to the non-interacting system. For nonlinearities above a critical value we generally observe that the tunnelling shuts down. However, for ce…
We observe a sudden breakdown of the transport of a strongly repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate through a shallow optical lattice of finite width. We are able to attribute this behavior to the development of a self-trapped state by using accurate numerical methods and an analytical description in terms of nonlinear Bloch waves. The dependence of the breakdown on the lattice depth and the interaction strength is investigated. We show that it is possible to prohibit the self-trapping by applying a constant offset potential to the lattice region. Furthermore, we observe the disappearance of the s…
An ultracold gas of interacting fermionic atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice is considered, where the lattice potential strength is periodically modulated. This non-equilibrium system is non-perturbatively described by means of a Keldysh-Floquet-Green's function approach for Mott-Hubbard systems employing a generalized dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Strong repulsive interactions between different atoms lead to a Mott insulator state for the equilibrium system, but the additional external driving at zero temperature yields a non-equilibrium quantum critical behavior, where an inf…
We investigate numerically the problem of few (one, two) noninteracting spin$-1/2$ fermions in a shallow harmonic trap coupled via contact repulsive interactions to a uniform one-dimensional bath of lattice bosons, described by the Bose-Hubbard model. Through extensive density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we extract the binding energy and the effective mass of quasiparticles, including dressed impurities (polarons) and their two-body bound states (bipolarons), emerging from the effective non-local Casimir interaction between the impurities. We show that the mixture exhibits rathe…
We investigate the nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of a single and two heavy fermionic impurities being harmonically trapped and repulsively interacting with a finite ensemble of majority fermions. A quench of the potential of the majority species from a double-well to a harmonic trap is applied, enforcing its counterflow which in turn perturbs the impurities. For weak repulsions it is shown that the mixture undergoes a periodic mixing and demixing dynamics, while stronger interactions lead to a more pronounced dynamical spatial separation. In the presence of correlations the impurity exhibits…
Mixing two kinds of particles that repel each other usually results in either a homogeneous mixture when the repulsion is weak, or a complete phase separation of the two kinds when their repulsion is too strong. It is shown however that there is an intermediate regime where the two kinds can coexist in their ground state as a bubble immersed in a gas of one kind. Such a situation is obtained by adding heavy repulsive impurities into a Bose-Einstein condensate. Above a certain strength of the mutual repulsion, a stable bubble of impurities and bosons can be formed, resulting from the equilibriu…
We study the ground state properties and nonequilibrium dynamics of two spinor bosonic impurities immersed in a one-dimensional bosonic gas upon applying an interspecies interaction quench. For the ground state of two non-interacting impurities we reveal signatures of attractive induced interactions in both cases of attractive or repulsive interspecies interactions, while a weak impurity-impurity repulsion forces the impurities to stay apart. Turning to the quench dynamics we inspect the time-evolution of the contrast unveiling the existence, dynamical deformation and the orthogonality catastr…
We explore the interplay between tunneling and interatomic interactions in the dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction. We tune the scattering length of an atomic $^{39}$K Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well trap to investigate regimes inaccessible to other superconducting or superfluid systems. In the limit of small-amplitude oscillations, we study the transition from Rabi to plasma oscillations by crossing over from attractive to repulsive interatomic interactions. We observe a critical slowing down in the oscillation frequency by increasing the strength of an attractive inte…
We unravel the many-body dynamics of a harmonically trapped impurity colliding with a bosonic medium confined in a double-well upon quenching the initially displaced harmonic trap to the center of the double-well. We reveal that the emerging correlation dynamics crucially depends on the impurity-medium interaction strength allowing for a classification into different dynamical response regimes. For strong attractive impurity-medium couplings the impurity is bound to the bosonic bath, while for intermediate attractions it undergoes an effective tunneling. In the case of weak attractive or repul…
We theoretically study trapped ions that are immersed in an ultracold gas of Rydberg-dressed atoms. By off-resonant coupling on a dipole-forbidden transition, the adiabatic atom-ion potential can be made repulsive. We study the energy exchange between the atoms and a single trapped ion and find that Langevin collisions are inhibited in the ultracold regime for these repulsive interactions. Therefore, the proposed system avoids recently observed ion heating in hybrid atom-ion systems caused by coupling to the ion's radio frequency trapping field and retains ultracold temperatures even in the pr…
We predict the phase separations of two-dimensional Fermi gases with repulsive contact-type interactions between two spin components. Using density-potential functional theory with systematic semiclassical approximations, we address the long-standing problem of itinerant ferromagnetism in realistic settings. We reveal a universal transition from the paramagnetic state at small repulsive interactions towards ferromagnetic density profiles at large interaction strengths, with intricate particle-number dependent phases in between. Building on quantum Monte Carlo results for uniform systems, we be…
We propose and investigate a pump-probe spectroscopy scheme to unveil the time-resolved dynamics of fermionic or bosonic impurities immersed in a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. In this scheme a pump pulse initially transfers the impurities from a noninteracting to a resonantly interacting spin-state and, after a finite time in which the system evolves freely, the probe pulse reverses this transition. This directly allows to monitor the nonequilibrium dynamics of the impurities as the dynamical formation of coherent attractive or repulsive Bose polarons and signatures of their i…
