The elementary excitations of a fractional quantum Hall liquid are quasiparticles or quasiholes which are neither bosons nor fermions, but so-called anyons. Here we study impurity particles immersed in a quantum Hall liquid which bind to the quasiholes via repulsive interactions with the liquid. We show that the angular momentum of an impurity is given by the multiple of a fractional "quantum" of angular momentum, and can directly be observed from the impurity density. In a system with several impurities bound to quasiholes, their total angular momentum interpolates between the values for free fermions and for free bosons. This interpolation is characterized by the fractional statistical parameter of the anyons which is typically defined via their braiding behavior.
Anyon collision experiments have recently demonstrated the ability to discriminate between fermionic and anyonic statistics. However, only one type of anyons associated with the simple Laughlin state at filling factor $ν=1/3$ has been probed so far. It is now important to establish anyon collisions as quantitative probes of fractional statistics for more complex topological orders, with the ability to distinguish between different species of anyons with different statistics. In this work, we use the anyon collider to compare the Laughlin $ν=1/3$ state, which is used as the reference state, wit…
We report experiments on temperature and Hall voltage bias dependence of the superperiodic conductance oscillations in the novel Laughlin quasiparticle interferometer, where quasiparticles of the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall fluid execute a closed path around an island of the 2/5 fluid. The amplitude of the oscillations fits well the quantum-coherent thermal dephasing dependence predicted for a two point-contact chiral edge channel interferometer in the full experimental temperature range 10.2<T<141 mK. The temperature dependence observed in the interferometer is clearly distinct from the behav…
We discuss how the braiding properties of Laughlin quasi-particles in quantum Hall states can be understood within a one-dimensional formalism we proposed earlier. In this formalism the two-dimensional space of the Hall liquid is identified with the phase space of a one-dimensional lattice system, and localized Laughlin quasi-holes can be understood as coherent states of lattice solitons. The formalism makes comparatively little use of the detailed structure of Laughlin wavefunctions, and may offer ways to be generalized to non-abelian states.
Studies on experimental realization of two-dimensional anyons in terms of quasiparticles have been restricted, so far, to only anyons on the plane. It is known, however, that the geometry and topology of space can have significant effects on quantum statistics for particles moving on it. Here, we have undertaken the first step towards realizing the emerging fractional statistics for particles restricted to move on the sphere, instead of on the plane. We show that such a model arises naturally in the context of quantum impurity problems. In particular, we demonstrate a setup in which the lowest…
Recently it was shown that anyons on the two-sphere naturally arise from a system of molecular impurities exchanging angular momentum with a many-particle bath (Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 015301 (2021)). Here we further advance this approach and rigorously demonstrate that in the experimentally realized regime the lowest spectrum of two linear molecules immersed in superfluid helium corresponds to the spectrum of two anyons on the sphere. We develop the formalism within the framework of the recently experimentally observed angulon quasiparticle.
We consider a thought experiment where two distinct species of 2D particles in a perpendicular magnetic field interact via repulsive potentials. If the magnetic field and the interactions are strong enough, one type of particles forms a Laughlin state and the other ones couple to Laughlin quasi-holes. We show that in this situation, the motion of the second type of particles is described by an effective Hamiltonian, corresponding to the magnetic gauge picture for non-interacting anyons. The argument is in accord with, but distinct from, the Berry phase calculation of Arovas-Schrieffer-Wilczek.…
We show the low-lying excitations at filling factor $ν=n+1/3$ with realistic interactions are contained completely within the well-defined Hilbert space of "Gaffnian quasiholes". Each Laughlin quasihole can thus be understood as a bound state of two Gaffnian quasiholes, which in the lowest Landau level (LLL) behaves like "partons" with "asymptotic freedom" mediated by neutral excitations acting as "gluons". Near the experimentally observed nematic FQH phase in higher LLs, quasiholes become weakly bounded and fractionalise with rich dynamical properties. By studying the effective interactions b…
We demonstrate that identical impurities immersed in a two-dimensional many-particle bath can be viewed as flux-tube-charged-particle composites described by fractional statistics. In particular, we find that the bath manifests itself as an external magnetic flux tube with respect to the impurities, and hence the time-reversal symmetry is broken for the effective Hamiltonian describing the impurities. The emerging flux tube acts as a statistical gauge field after a certain critical coupling. This critical coupling corresponds to the intersection point between the quasiparticle state and the ph…
One of the hallmarks of quantum statistics, tightly entwined with the concept of topological phases of matter, is the prediction of anyons. Although anyons are predicted to be realized in certain fractional quantum Hall systems, they have not yet been unambiguously detected in experiment. Here we introduce a simple quantum impurity model, where bosonic or fermionic impurities turn into anyons as a consequence of their interaction with the surrounding many-particle bath. A cloud of phonons dresses each impurity in such a way that it effectively attaches fluxes/vortices to it and thereby convert…
We present numerical calculations of the charge and statistics, as extracted from Berry phases, of the Laughlin quasi-particles, near filling fraction 1/3, and for system sizes of up to 200 electrons. For the quasi-holes our results confirm that the charge and statistics parameter are $e/3$ and 1/3, respectively. For the quasi-electron charge we find a slow convergence towards the expected value of $-e/3$, with a finite size correction for $N$ electrons of approximately $-0.13e/N$. The statistics parameter for the quasi-electrons has no well defined value even for 200 electrons, but might poss…
We discuss a way of creating, manipulating and detecting anyons in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates consisting of a small number of atoms . By achieving a quasidegeneracy in the atomic motional states we drive the system into a 1/2--Laughlin state for fractional quantum Hall bosons. Localized 1/2--quasiholes can be created by focusing lasers at the desired positions. We show how to manipulate these quasiholes in order to probe directly their 1/2--statistics.
Anyons have recently received great attention due to their promising application in topological quantum computation. The best validated system that enjoys the anyonic excitations are the Laughlin states. The quasi-particles in Laughlin states are neither fermions nor bosons but possess the discrete statistical angle ? = ?=m, with m being an integer. Here we report a possible realization of the universal Abelian anyons, whose statistical angle can be tuned continuously by external parameters and can take any arbitrary values interpolating ? = 0 and ? = ?. The proposed setup is the surface state…
Non-Abelian excitations are an interesting feature of many fractional quantum Hall phases, including those phases described by the Moore-Read (or Pfaffian) wave function. However, the detection of the non-Abelian quasiparticles is challenging. Here, we consider a system described by the Moore-Read wave function, and assume that impurity particles bind to its quasiholes. Then, the angular momentum of the impurities, reflected also by the impurity density, provides a useful witness of the physics of the non-Abelian excitations. By demanding that the impurities are constrained to the lowest Landa…
It has been demonstrated numerically, mainly by considering ground state properties, that fractional quantum Hall physics can appear in lattice systems, but it is very difficult to study the anyons directly. Here, I propose to solve this problem by using conformal field theory to build semi-analytical fractional quantum Hall lattice models having anyons in their ground states, and I carry out the construction explicitly for the family of bosonic and fermionic Laughlin states. This enables me to show directly that the braiding properties of the anyons are those expected from analytical continua…
In this paper, after a brief presentation of the physical 2+1 dimensional place where the anyons evolve, there is established the links creation probability for the anyons. The departure point is the celebrated Laughlin wave function. Then, two cases of quantum links are emphasized, considering two and three anyons. In the first case a two qubits register is attached. The unitary transformation (e.g. the UCNOT unitary transformation) can map not-entangled quantum states to the quantum and topological entangled states, as there are highlighted in this paper for the two anyons link case. The six…
We consider general N-particle wave functions that have the form of a product of the Laughlin state with filling factor $1/\ell$ and an analytic function of the N variables. This is the most general form of a wave function that can arise through a perturbation of the Laughlin state by external potentials or impurities, while staying in the lowest Landau level and maintaining the strong correlations of the original state. We show that the perturbation can only shift or lower the 1-particle density but nowhere increase it above a maximum value. Consequences of this bound for the response of the …
Chiral gapless boundary modes are characteristic of quantum Hall (QH) states. For hole-conjugate fractional QH phases counterpropagating edge modes (upstream and downstream) are expected. In the presence of electrostatic interactions and disorder these modes may renormalize into charge and upstream neutral modes. Orthodox models of Laughlin phases anticipate only a downstream charge mode. Here we show that in the latter case, in the presence of a smooth confining potential, edge reconstruction leads to the emergence of pairs of counterpropagating modes, which, by way of mode renormalization, m…
Laughlin quasiparticles are the elementary excitations of a highly-correlated fractional quantum Hall electron fluid. They have fractional charge and obey fractional statistics. The quasiparticles can propagate quantum-coherently in chiral edge channels, and constructively or destructively interfere. Unlike electrons, the interference condition for Laughlin quasiparticles has a non-vanishing statistical contribution that can be observed experimentally. Two kinds of interferometer devices have been realized. In the primary-filling interferometer, the entire device has filling 1/3, and the e/3 e…
We report experiments in a large, 2.5 micron diameter Fabry-Perot quantum Hall interferometer with two tunneling constrictions. Interference fringes are observed as conductance oscillations as a function of applied magnetic field (the Aharonov-Bohm flux through the electron island) or a global backgate voltage (electronic charge in the island). Depletion is such that in the fractional quantum Hall regime, filling 1/3 current-carrying chiral edge channels pass through constrictions when the island filling is 2/5. The interferometer device is calibrated with fermionic electrons in the integer qu…
In two dimensions, the laws of physics permit existence of anyons, particles with fractional statistics which is neither Fermi nor Bose. That is, upon exchange of two such particles, the quantum state of a system acquires a phase which is neither 0 nor π, but can be any value. The elementary excitations (Laughlin quasiparticles) of a fractional quantum Hall fluid have fractional electric charge and are expected to obey fractional statistics. Here we report experimental realization of a novel Laughlin quasiparticle interferometer, where quasiparticles of the 1/3 fluid execute a closed path arou…
In a Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state, one- and two-quasihole states can be obtained by diagonalizing the many-body Hamiltonian with a trapping potential or, for larger systems, from the linear combination of the edge Jack polynomials. The quasihole states live entirely in the subspace of the lowest-energy branch in the energy spectrum with a fixed number of orbits, or a hard-wall confinement. The reduction in the Hilbert space dimension facilitates the study of time evolution of the quasihole states after, say, the removal of the trapping potential. We explore the quench dynamics under …
A collider, where particles are injected to a beam splitter from opposite sides, has been used for identifying quantum statistics of identical particles. The collision leads to bunching of the particles for bosons and antibunching for fermions. In recent experiments, a collider was applied to a fractional quantum Hall regime hosting Abelian anyons. The observed negative cross correlation of electrical currents cannot be understood with fermionic antibunching. Here we predict, based on a conformal field theory and non-perturbative treatment of non-equilibrium anyon injection, that the collider …

The lowest-Landau-level anyon model becomes nonperiodic in the statistics parameter when the finite size of the attached flux tubes is taken into account. The finite-size effects cause the inverse proportional relation between the critical filling factor and the statistics parameter to be nonperiodically continued in the screening regime, where the fluxes are anti-parallel to the external magnetic field -- at critical filling, the external magnetic field is entirely screened by the mean magnetic field associated with the flux tubes. A clustering argument is proposed to select particular values…
Superperiodic conductance oscillations were recently observed in the quasiparticle interferometer, where an edge channel of the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall fluid encircles an island of the 2/5 fluid. We present a microscopic model of the origin of the 5h/e flux superperiod based on the Haldane-Halperin fractional-statistics hierarchical construction of the 2/5 condensate. Since variation of the applied magnetic field does not affect the charge state of the island, the fundamental period comprises the minimal 2/5 island neutral reconstruction. The period consists of incrementing by one the stat…
The Laughlin state is an ansatz for the ground state of a system of 2D quantum particles submitted to a strong magnetic field and strong interactions. The two effects conspire to generate strong and very specific correlations between the particles. I present a mathematical approach to the rigidity these correlations display in their response to perturbations. This is an important ingredient in the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect. The main message is that potentials generated by impurities and residual interactions can be taken into account by generating uncorrelated quasi-holes on…
We study the trapping of Abelian anyons (quasiholes and quasiparticles) by a local potential (e.g., induced by an AFM tip) in a microscopic model of fractional quantum Hall liquids with long-range Coulomb interaction and edge confining potential. We find, in particular, at Laughlin filling fraction $ν= 1/3$, both quasihole and quasiparticle states can emerge as the ground state of the system in the presence of the trapping potential. As expected, we find the presence of an Abelian quasihole has no effect on the edge spectrum of the quantum liquid, unlike in the non-Abelian case [Phys. Rev. Let…

The possibility of realizing non-Abelian statistics and utilizing it for topological quantum computation (TQC) has generated widespread interest. However, the non-Abelian statistics that can be realized in most accessible proposals is not powerful enough for universal TQC. In this paper, we consider a simple bilayer fractional quantum Hall (FQH) system with the $1/3$ Laughlin state in each layer. We show that interlayer tunneling can drive a transition to an exotic non-Abelian state that contains the famous `Fibonacci'anyon, whose non-Abelian statistics is powerful enough for universal TQC. Ou…
The quantum Hall (QH) effect represents a unique playground where quantum coherence of electrons can be exploited for various applications, from metrology to quantum computation. In the fractional regime it also hosts anyons, emergent quasiparticles that are neither bosons nor fermions and possess fractional statistics. Their detection and manipulation represent key milestones in view of topologically protected quantum computation schemes. Exploiting the high degree of phase coherence, edge states in the QH regime have been investigated by designing and constructing electronic interferometers,…
Recent pioneering works have set the stage for exploring anyon braiding statistics from negative current cross-correlations along two intersecting quasiparticle beams. In such a dual-source - analyzer quantum point contact setup, also referred to as 'collider', the anyon exchange phase of fractional quantum Hall quasiparticles is predicted to be imprinted into the cross-correlations characterized by an effective Fano-factor $P$. In the case of symmetric incoming quasiparticle beams, conventional fermions result in a vanishing $P$. In marked contrast, we observe signatures of anyon statistics i…
We report experimental realization of a quasiparticle interferometer where the entire system is in 1/3 primary fractional quantum Hall state. The interferometer consists of chiral edge channels coupled by quantum-coherent tunneling in two constrictions, thus enclosing an Aharonov-Bohm area. We observe magnetic flux and charge periods h/e and e/3, equivalent to creation of one quasielectron in the island. Quantum theory predicts a 3h/e flux period for charge e/3, integer statistics particles. Accordingly, the observed periods demonstrate the anyonic statistics of Laughlin quasiparticles.
We derive the low-energy theory of semi-quantized quantum Hall states, a recently observed class of gapless bilayer fractional quantum Hall states. Our theory shows these states to feature gapless quasiparticles of fractional charge coupled to an emergent Chern-Simons gauge field. These gapless quasiparticles can be understood as composites of electrons and Laughlin-like quasiparticles. We show that semi-quantized quantum Hall states exhibit perfect interlayer drag, host non-Fermi liquid physics, and serve as versatile parent states for fully gapped topological phases hosting anyonic excitatio…
Using the Laughlin's argument on a torus with two pin-holes, we numerically demonstrate that the discontinuities of the center-of-mass work well as an invariant of the pumping phenomena during the process of the flux-attachment, trading the magnetic flux for the statistical one. This is consistent with the bulk-edge correspondence of the fractional quantum Hall effect of anyons. We also confirm that the general feature of the edge states remains unchanged during the process while the topological degeneracy is discretely changed. This supports the stability of the quantum Hall edge states in th…
The quantum of heat conductance of ballistic one-dimensional (1D) channels, being gQ=k0T with k0=pi^2*2kB^2/3h (T - temperature, kB - Boltzmann's constant, h - Planck's constant), is an important fundamental constant. While the quantization of the electrical conductance of 1D ballistic conductors has long been experimentally established, a demonstration of the quantization of thermal conductance proved to be much harder. It has already been accomplished for weakly interacting systems of phonons, photons, and electronic Fermi-liquids. Theoretically, however, the quantization must also hold in s…
We report experiments on a Laughlin quasiparticle interferometer where the entire system is on the 1/3 primary fractional quantum Hall plateau. Electron-beam lithography is used to define an approximately circular 2D electron island separated from the 2D bulk by two wide constrictions. The interferometer consists of counterpropagating chiral edge channels coupled by quantum-coherent tunneling in the two constrictions, thus enclosing an island area. Interference fringes are observed as conductance oscillations, similar to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. The flux and charge periods of the interferomet…
Using the parton construction, we build a three-dimensional (3D) multilayer fractional quantum Hall state with average filling ν= 1/3 per layer that is qualitatively distinct from a stacking of weakly coupled Laughlin states. The state supports gapped charge e/3 fermionic quasiparticles that can propagate both within and between the layers, in contrast to the quasiparticles in a multilayer Laughlin state which are confined within each layer. Moreover, the state has gapless neutral collective modes, a manifestation of an emergent "photon", which is minimally coupled to the fermionic quasipartic…
Fabry-Pérot interferometry has emerged as a tool to probe anyon statistics in the quantum Hall effect. The interference phase is interpreted as a combination of a quantized statistical phase and an Aharonov-Bohm phase, proportional to the device area and the charge of the anyons propagating along the device edge. This interpretation faces two challenges. First, the edge states have a finite width and hence the device area is ill-defined. Second, multiple localized anyons may be present in states that overlap with the edge, and it may not be clear whether a second anyon traveling along the edge…

The Fibonacci topological order is the simplest platform for a universal topological quantum computer, consisting of a single type of non-Abelian anyon, $τ$, with fusion rule $τ\timesτ=1+τ$. While it has been proposed that the anyon spectrum of the $ν=12/5$ fractional quantum Hall state includes a Fibonacci sector, a dynamical picture of how a pure Fibonacci state may emerge in a quantum Hall system has been lacking. Here we use recently proposed non-Abelian dualities to construct a Fibonacci state of bosons at filling $ν=2$ starting from a trilayer of integer quantum Hall states. Our parent t…
We study the spin of the localised quasiparticle excitations of lowest-Landau-level quantum Hall states defined on a disk. The spin that we propose satisfies the spin-statistics relation and can be used to reconstruct the topological geometric phase associated to the exchange of two arbitrarily chosen quasiparticles. Since it is related to the quadrupole moment of the quasiparticle charge distribution, it can be measured in an experiment and could reveal anyonic properties in a way that is complementary to the interferometric schemes employed so far. We first discuss our definition for the qua…
