We theoretically investigate collective phase synchronization between interacting groups of globally coupled noisy identical phase oscillators exhibiting macroscopic rhythms. Using the phase reduction method, we derive coupled collective phase equations describing the macroscopic rhythms of the groups from microscopic Langevin phase equations of the individual oscillators via nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations. For sinusoidal microscopic coupling, we determine the type of the collective phase coupling function, i.e., whether the groups exhibit in-phase or anti-phase synchronization. We show that the macroscopic rhythms can exhibit effective anti-phase synchronization even if the microscopic phase coupling between the groups is in-phase, and vice versa. Moreover, near the onset of collective oscillations, we analytically obtain the collective phase coupling function using center-manifold and phase reductions of the nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations.
We study the phase synchronization between collective rhythms of fully locked oscillator groups. For weakly interacting groups of two oscillators with global sinusoidal coupling, we analytically derive the collective phase coupling function, which determines the dynamics of the collective phase difference between the groups. We demonstrate that the groups can exhibit anti-phase collective synchronization in spite of microscopic in-phase external coupling and vice versa.
Optimization of the stability of synchronized states between a pair of symmetrically coupled reaction-diffusion systems exhibiting rhythmic spatiotemporal patterns is studied in the framework of the phase reduction theory. The optimal linear filter that maximizes the linear stability of the in-phase synchronized state is derived for the case where the two systems are linearly coupled. The nonlinear optimal interaction function that theoretically gives the largest linear stability of the in-phase synchronized state is also derived. The theory is illustrated by using typical rhythmic patterns in…
We formulate a theory for the collective phase description of globally coupled noisy limit-cycle oscillators exhibiting macroscopic rhythms. Collective phase equations describing such macroscopic rhythms are derived by means of a two-step phase reduction. The collective phase sensitivity and collective phase coupling functions, which quantitatively characterize the macroscopic rhythms, are illustrated using three representative models of limit-cycle oscillators. As an important result of the theory, we demonstrate noise-induced anti-phase synchronization between macroscopic rhythms by direct n…
Phase synchronization between collective oscillations exhibited by two weakly interacting groups of non-identical phase oscillators with internal and external global sinusoidal coupling of the groups is analyzed theoretically. Coupled amplitude equations describing the collective oscillations of the oscillator groups are obtained by using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz, and then coupled phase equations for the collective oscillations are derived by phase reduction of the amplitude equations. The collective phase coupling function, which determines the dynamics of macroscopic phase differences between…
A novel viewpoint, i.e., adaptive synchronization, is proposed to explore collective rhythm observed in many complex, self-organizing systems. We show that a simple adaptive coupling is able to tip arrays of oscillators towards collective synchronization. Two arrays of simply coupled Hindmarsh-Rose chaotic neurons are used to illustrate cooperative dynamics of neural activity like the central pattern generators, which supplies a new idea for biological experiments and numerical simulations. The results enhance the viewpoint that chaos is a necessary ingredient in life, and indicate that such s…
Systems of dynamical elements exhibiting spontaneous rhythms are found in various fields of science and engineering, including physics, chemistry, biology, physiology, and mechanical and electrical engineering. Such dynamical elements are often modeled as nonlinear limit-cycle oscillators. In this article, we briefly review phase reduction theory, which is a simple and powerful method for analyzing the synchronization properties of limit-cycle oscillators exhibiting rhythmic dynamics. Through phase reduction theory, we can systematically simplify the nonlinear multi-dimensional differential eq…
Oscillators coupled in a network can synchronize with each other to yield a coherent population rhythm. If multiple such networks are coupled together, the question arises whether these rhythms will synchronize. We investigate the impact of noise on this synchronization for strong inhibitory pulse-coupling and find that increasing the noise can synchronize the population rhythms, even if the noisy inputs to different oscillators are completely uncorrelated. Reducing the system to a phenomenological iterated map we show that this synchronization of the rhythms arises from the noise-induced phas…
The synchronization of different $γ$-rhythms arising in different brain areas has been implicated in various cognitive functions. Here, we focus on the effect of the ubiquitous neuronal heterogeneity on the synchronization of PING (pyramidal-interneuronal network gamma) and ING (interneuronal network gamma) rhythms. The synchronization properties of rhythms depends on the response of their collective phase to external input. We therefore determined the macroscopic phase-response curve for finite-amplitude perturbations (fmPRC), using numerical simulation of all-to-all coupled networks of integ…
The preBötzinger Complex, the mammalian inspiratory rhythm generator, encodes inspiratory time as motor pattern. Spike synchronization throughout this sparsely connected network generates inspiratory bursts albeit with variable latencies after preinspiratory activity onset in each breathing cycle. Using preBötC rhythmogenic microcircuit minimal models, we examined the variability in probability and latency to burst, mimicking experiments. Among various physiologically plausible graphs of 1000 point neurons with experimentally determined neuronal and synaptic parameters, directed Erdős-Rényi gr…
We study a large population of globally coupled phase oscillators subject to common white Gaussian noise and find analytically that the critical coupling strength between oscillators for synchronization transition decreases with an increase in the intensity of common noise. Thus, common noise promotes the onset of synchronization. Our prediction is confirmed by numerical simulations of the phase oscillators as well as of limit-cycle oscillators.
Despite their significant functional roles, beta-band oscillations are least understood. Synchronization in neuronal networks have attracted much attention in recent years with the main focus on transition type. Whether one obtains explosive transition or a continuous transition is an important feature of the neuronal network which can depend on network structure as well as synaptic types. In this study we consider the effect of synaptic interaction (electrical and chemical) as well as structural connectivity on synchronization transition in network models of Izhikevich neurons which spike reg…
Topological signals defined on nodes, links and higher dimensional simplices define the dynamical state of a network or of a simplicial complex. As such, topological signals are attracting increasing attention in network theory, dynamical systems, signal processing and machine learning. Topological signals defined on the nodes are typically studied in network dynamics, while topological signals defined on links are much less explored. Here we investigate Dirac synchronization, describing locally coupled topological signals defined on the nodes and on the links of a network, and treated using t…
Hybrid dynamical systems characterized by discrete switching of smooth dynamics have been used to model various rhythmic phenomena. However, the phase reduction theory, a fundamental framework for analyzing the synchronization of limit-cycle oscillations in rhythmic systems, has mostly been restricted to smooth dynamical systems. Here we develop a general phase reduction theory for weakly perturbed limit cycles in hybrid dynamical systems that facilitates analysis, control, and optimization of nonlinear oscillators whose smooth models are unavailable or intractable. On the basis of the general…
The collective behavior in a population of globally coupled oscillators with randomly distributed frequencies is studied when the natural frequency distribution does not possess an even symmetry with respect to the average natural frequency of oscillators. We study the special case of absence of symmetry induced by a group of scaling transformations of the continuous distribution of frequencies. When coupling between oscillators is increased beyond a critical threshold favoring spontaneous synchronization, we found that the variation in the velocity of the traveling wave depends on the extent …
Crowd behaviour challenges our fundamental understanding of social phenomena. Involving complex interactions between multiple temporal and spatial scales of activity, its governing mechanisms defy conventional analysis. Using 1.5 million Twitter messages from the 15M movement in Spain as an example of multitudinous self-organization, we describe the coordination dynamics of the system measuring phase-locking statistics at different frequencies using wavelet transforms, identifying 8 frequency bands of entrained oscillations between 15 geographical nodes. Then we apply maximum entropy inference…
Cooperative effects of periodic force and noise in globally Cooperative effects of periodic force and noise in globally coupled systems are studied using a nonlinear diffusion equation for the number density. The amplitude of the order parameter oscillation is enhanced in an intermediate range of noise strength for a globally coupled bistable system, and the order parameter oscillation is entrained to the external periodic force in an intermediate range of noise strength. These enhancement phenomena of the response of the order parameter in the deterministic equations are interpreted as stocha…
We study synaptically coupled neuronal networks to identify the role of coupling delays in network's synchronized behaviors. We consider a network of excitable, relaxation oscillator neurons where two distinct populations, one excitatory and one inhibitory, are coupled and interact with each other. The excitatory population is uncoupled, while the inhibitory population is tightly coupled. A geometric singular perturbation analysis yields existence and stability conditions for synchronization states under different firing patterns between the two populations, along with formulas for the periods…
Rhythmic activities that alternate between coherent and incoherent phases are ubiquitous in chemical, ecological, climate, or neural systems. Despite their importance, general mechanisms for their emergence are little understood. In order to fill this gap, we present a framework for describing the emergence of recurrent synchronization in complex networks with adaptive interactions. This phenomenon is manifested at the macroscopic level by temporal episodes of coherent and incoherent dynamics that alternate recurrently. At the same time, the dynamics of the individual nodes do not change quali…
We study the synchronization of a linear array of globally coupled identical logistic maps. We consider a time-delayed coupling that takes into account the finite velocity of propagation of the interactions. We find globally synchronized states in which the elements of the array evolve along a periodic orbit of the uncoupled map, while the spatial correlation along the array is such that an individual map sees all other maps in his present, current, state. For values of the nonlinear parameter such that the uncoupled maps are chaotic, time-delayed mutual coupling suppress the chaotic behavior …
Neural synchronization is believed to be critical for many brain functions. It frequently exhibits temporal variability, but it is not known if this variability has a specific temporal patterning. This study explores these synchronization/desynchronization patterns. We employ recently developed techniques to analyze the fine temporal structure of phase-locking to study the temporal patterning of synchrony of the human brain rhythms. We study neural oscillations recorded by EEG in $α$ and $β$ frequency bands in healthy human subjects at rest and during the execution of a task. While the phase-l…
Synchronization of network-coupled dynamical units is important to a variety of natural and engineered processes including circadian rhythms, cardiac function, neural processing, and power grids. Despite this ubiquity, it remains poorly understood how complex network structures and heterogeneous local dynamics combine to either promote or inhibit synchronization. Moreover, for most real-world applications it is impossible to obtain the exact specifications of the system, and there is a lack of theory for how uncertainty affects synchronization. We address this open problem by studying the Sync…
This brief paper further investigates the locally and globally adaptive synchronization of an uncertain complex dynamical network. Several network synchronization criteria are deduced. Especially, our hypotheses and designed adaptive controllers for network synchronization are rather simple in form. It is very useful for future practical engineering design. Moreover, numerical simulations are also given to show the effectiveness of our synchronization approaches.
A universal approach is proposed for suppression of collective synchrony in a large population of interacting rhythmic units. We demonstrate that provided that the internal coupling is weak, stabilization of overall oscillations with vanishing stimulation leads to desynchronization in a large ensemble of coupled oscillators, without altering significantly the essential nature of each constituent oscillator. We expect our findings to be a starting point for the issue of destroying undesired synchronization, e. g. desynchronization techniques for deep brain stimulation for neurological diseases …
Synchronization is central to many complex systems in engineering physics (e.g., the power-grid, Josephson junction circuits, and electro-chemical oscillators) and biology (e.g., neuronal, circadian, and cardiac rhythms). Despite these widespread applications---for which proper functionality depends sensitively on the extent of synchronization---there remains a lack of understanding for how systems evolve and adapt to enhance or inhibit synchronization. We study how network modifications affect the synchronization properties of network-coupled dynamical systems that have heterogeneous node dyn…
A model for synchronization of globally coupled phase oscillators including ``inertial'' effects is analyzed. In such a model, both oscillator frequencies and phases evolve in time. Stationary solutions include incoherent (unsynchronized) and synchronized states of the oscillator population. Assuming a Lorentzian distribution of oscillator natural frequencies, $g(Ω)$, both larger inertia or larger frequency spread stabilize the incoherent solution, thereby making harder to synchronize the population. In the limiting case $g(Ω)=δ(Ω)$, the critical coupling becomes independent of inertia. A rich…
Motivated from a wide range of applications, various methods to control synchronization in coupled oscillators have been proposed. Previous studies have demonstrated that global feedback typically induces three macroscopic behaviors: synchronization, desynchronization, and oscillation quenching. However, analyzing all of these transitions within a single theoretical framework is difficult, and thus the feedback effect is only partially understood in each framework. Herein, we analyze a model of globally coupled phase oscillators exposed to global feedback, which shows all of the typical macros…
We study the synchronization of a coupled map lattice consisting of a one-dimensional chain of logistic maps. We consider global coupling with a time-delay that takes into account the finite velocity of propagation of interactions. We recently showed that clustering occurs for weak coupling, while for strong coupling the array synchronizes into a global state where each element sees all other elements in its current, present state [Physica A {\bf 325} (2003) 186, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 67} (2003) 056219]. In this paper we study the effects of in-homogeneities, both in the individual maps, which are…
Self-organized synchronization is a ubiquitous collective phenomenon, in which each unit adjusts their rhythms to achieve synchrony through mutual interactions. The optomechanical systems, due to their inherently engineerable nonlinearities, provide an ideal platform to study self-organized synchronization. Here, we demonstrate the self-organized synchronization of phonon lasers in a two-membrane-in-the-middle optomechanical system. The probe of individual membrane enables to monitor the real-time transient dynamics of synchronization, which reveal that the system enters into the synchronizati…
We present results obtained for a network of four delay-coupled lasers modelled by Lang-Kobayashi-type equations. We find small chimera states consisting of a pair of synchronized lasers and two unsynchronized lasers. One class of these small chimera states can be understood as intermediate steps on the route from synchronization to desynchronization and we present the entire chain of bifurcations giving birth to them. This class of small chimeras can exhibit limit-cycle or quasiperiodic dynamics. A second type of small chimera states exists apparently disconnected from any region of synchroni…
Secure chaos based multiplex communication system scheme is proposed utilizing globally coupled semiconductor lasers with multiple variable time delay optoelectronic feedbacks.
We explore the aging transition in a network of globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators under a discrete time-dependent coupling. In this coupling, the connections among the oscillators are turned ON and OFF in a systematic manner, having either a symmetric or an asymmetric time interval. We discover that depending upon the time period and duty cycle of the ON-OFF intervals, the aging region shrinks drastically in the parameter space, therefore promoting restoration of oscillatory dynamics from the aging. In the case of symmetric discrete coupling (where the ON-OFF intervals are equal), the…
We study ensembles of globally coupled, nonidentical phase oscillators subject to correlated noise, and we identify several important factors that cause noise and coupling to synchronize or desychronize a system. By introducing noise in various ways, we find a novel estimate for the onset of synchrony of a system in terms of the coupling strength, noise strength, and width of the frequency distribution of its natural oscillations. We also demonstrate that noise alone is sufficient to synchronize nonidentical oscillators. However, this synchrony depends on the first Fourier mode of a phase-sens…
The condensation transition, leading to complete mutual synchronization in large populations of globally coupled chaotic Roessler oscillators, is investigated. Statistical properties of this transition and the cluster structure of partially condensed states are analyzed.
Experiments and supporting theoretical analysis is presented to describe the synchronization patterns that can be observed with a population of globally coupled electrochemical oscillators close to a homoclinic, saddle-loop bifurcation, where the coupling is repulsive in the electrode potential. While attractive coupling generates phase clusters and desynchronized states, repulsive coupling results in synchronized oscillations. The experiments are interpreted with a phenomenological model that captures the waveform of the oscillations (exponential increase) followed by a refractory period. The…
We analyze mean-field models of synchronization of phase oscillators with singular couplings and subject to external random forces. They are related to the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model. Their probability densities satisfy local partial differential equations similar to the Porous Medium, Burgers and extended Burgers equations depending on the degree of singularity of the coupling. We show that Porous Medium oscillators (the most singularly coupled) do not synchronize and that (transient) synchronization is possible only at zero temperature for Burgers oscillators. The extended Burgers oscillators …
Synchronization among globally coupled, chaotic map lattices can be related to stable periodic windows in isolated chaotic maps. This relation provides a simple predictive tool for the understanding of complicated behavior in coupled physical, chemical and biological systems.
We study the dynamics of an ensemble of globally coupled chaotic logistic maps under the action of a learning algorithm aimed at driving the system from incoherent collective evolution to a state of spontaneous full synchronization. Numerical calculations reveal a sharp transition between regimes of unsuccessful and successful learning as the algorithm stiffness grows. In the regime of successful learning, an optimal value of the stiffness is found for which the learning time is minimal.
The phase reduction method for limit cycle oscillators subjected to weak perturbations has significantly contributed to theoretical investigations of rhythmic phenomena. We here propose a generalized phase reduction method that is also applicable to strongly perturbed limit cycle oscillators. The fundamental assumption of our method is that the perturbations can be decomposed into a slowly varying component as compared to the amplitude relaxation time and remaining weak fluctuations. Under this assumption, we introduce a generalized phase parameterized by the slowly varying component and deriv…
Globally coupled phase oscillator models, such as the Kuramoto model, exhibit spontaneous collective synchronization. Such models can be restated in terms of interactions within and between subsets of oscillators. An approximation for the internal structure of coherent subsets of oscillators can be made based on the observations of natural ordering and uniform tidal effects. The approximation is seen to perform well for predicting the microstructure in a variety of phase oscillator models.
It is shown that globally-coupled oscillators with pulse interaction can synchronize under broader conditions than widely believed from a theorem of Mirollo \& Strogatz \cite{MirolloII}. This behavior is stable against frozen disorder. Beside the relevance to biology, it is argued that synchronization in relaxation oscillator models is related to Self-Organized Criticality in Stick-Slip-like models.
Synchronization is a ubiquitous phenomenon occurring in social, biological, and technological systems when the internal rhythms of their constituents are adapted to be in unison as a result of their coupling. This natural tendency towards dynamical consensus has spurred a large body of theoretical and experimental research in recent decades. The Kuramoto model constitutes the most studied and paradigmatic framework in which to study synchronization. In particular, it shows how synchronization appears as a phase transition from a dynamically disordered state at some critical value for the coupl…
Many biological systems synchronize their movement through physical interactions. By far the most well studied examples concern physical interactions through a fluid: beating cilia, swimming sperm and worms, and flapping wings, all display synchronization behavior through fluid mechanical interactions. However, as the density of a collective increases individuals may also interact with each other through physical contact. In the field of "active matter" systems, it is well known that inelastic contact between individuals can produce long-range correlations in position, orientation, and velocit…

We describe synchronization transitions in an ensemble of globally coupled phase oscillators with a bi-harmonic coupling function, and two sources of disorder - diversity of intrinsic oscillatory frequencies and external independent noise. Based on the self-consistent formulation, we derive analytic solutions for different synchronous states. We report on various non-trivial transitions from incoherence to synchrony where possible scenarios include: simple supercritical transition (similar to classical Kuramoto model), subcritical transition with large area of bistability of incoherent and syn…
This study is focused on the mechanisms of rhythmogenesis and robustness of anti-phase bursting in half-center-oscillators (HCOs) consisting of two reciprocally inhibitory coupled neurons. There is a growing body of experimental evidence that a HCO is a universal building block for larger neural networks, including central pattern generators (CPGs) controlling a variety of locomotion behaviors in spineless animals and mammals. It remains unclear how CPGs achieve the level of robustness and stability observed in nature. There has been a vastly growing consensus in the community of neurophysiolo…
We analyze the collective behavior of a lattice model of pulse-coupled oscillators. By means of computer simulations we find the relation between the intrinsic dynamics of each member of the population and their mutual interaction that ensures, in a general context, the existence of a fully synchronized regime. This condition turns out to be the same than the obtained for the globally coupled population. When the condition is not completely satisfied we find different spatial structures. This also gives some hints about self-organized criticality.
