We consider the nonlinear extension of the Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators where the phase shift in the coupling function depends on the order parameter. A bifurcation analysis of the transition from fully synchronous state to partial synchrony is performed. We demonstrate that for small ensembles it is typically mediated by stable cluster states, that disappear with creation of heteroclinic cycles, while for a larger number of oscillators a direct transition from full synchrony to a periodic or quasiperiodic regime occurs.
A universal approach is proposed for suppression of collective synchrony in a large population of interacting rhythmic units. We demonstrate that provided that the internal coupling is weak, stabilization of overall oscillations with vanishing stimulation leads to desynchronization in a large ensemble of coupled oscillators, without altering significantly the essential nature of each constituent oscillator. We expect our findings to be a starting point for the issue of destroying undesired synchronization, e. g. desynchronization techniques for deep brain stimulation for neurological diseases …
Motivated from a wide range of applications, various methods to control synchronization in coupled oscillators have been proposed. Previous studies have demonstrated that global feedback typically induces three macroscopic behaviors: synchronization, desynchronization, and oscillation quenching. However, analyzing all of these transitions within a single theoretical framework is difficult, and thus the feedback effect is only partially understood in each framework. Herein, we analyze a model of globally coupled phase oscillators exposed to global feedback, which shows all of the typical macros…
Collective behavior in large ensembles of dynamical units with non-pairwise interactions may play an important role in several systems ranging from brain function to social networks. Despite recent work pointing to simplicial structure, i.e., higher-order interactions between three or more units at a time, their dynamical characteristics remain poorly understood. Here we present an analysis of the collective dynamics of such a simplicial system, namely coupled phase oscillators with three-way interactions. The simplicial structure gives rise to a number of novel phenomena, most notably a conti…
The concept of "remote synchronization" (RS) was introduced in [Phys. Rev. E 85, 026208 (2012)], where synchronization in a star network of Stuart-Landau oscillators was investigated. In the RS regime therein described, the central hub served as a transmitter of information between peripheral nodes, while maintaining independent dynamics that were asynchronous with the rest of the network. One of the key conclusions of that paper was that RS cannot occur in pure phase-oscillator networks. Here, we show that the RS regime can exist in networks of Kuramoto oscillators, and that hub nodes can act…
We seek explanation for the neurophysiological phenomenon of event related desynchronization (ERD) by using models of diffusively coupled nonlinear oscillators. We demonstrate that when the strength of the event is sufficient, ERD is found to emerge and the accomplishment of a behavioral/functional task is determined by the nature of the desynchronized state. We illustrate the phenomenon for the case of limit cycle and chaotic systems. We numerically demonstrate the occurrence of ERD and provide analytical explanation. We also discuss possible applications of the observed phenomenon in real ph…
Many networks must maintain synchrony despite the fact that they operate in noisy environments. Important examples are stochastic inertial oscillators, which are known to exhibit fluctuations with broad tails in many applications, including electric power networks with renewable energy sources. Such non-Gaussian fluctuations can result in rare network desynchronization. Here we build a general theory for inertial oscillator network desynchronization by non-Gaussian noise. We compute the rate of desynchronization and show that higher-moments of noise enter at specific powers of coupling: either…
We investigate the combined effects of distributed delay and the balance between excitatory and inhibitory nodes on the stability of synchronous oscillations in a network of coupled Stuart--Landau oscillators. To this end a network model is proposed for which the stability can be investigated analytically. It is found that beyond a critical inhibition ratio synchronization tends to be unstable. However, increasing distributional widths can counteract this trend leading to multiple resynchronization transitions at relatively high inhibition ratios. All studies are performed on two distribution …
We study the effects of noise on the collective dynamics of an ensemble of coupled phase oscillators whose natural frequencies are all identical, but whose coupling strengths are not the same all over the ensemble. The intensity of noise can also be heterogeneous, representing diversity in the individual responses to external fluctuations. We show that the desynchronization transition induced by noise may be completely suppressed, even for arbitrarily large noise intensities, is the distribution of coupling strengths decays slowly enough for large couplings. Equivalently, if the response to no…
We present an analytical description for the collective dynamics of oscillator ensembles with higher-order coupling encoded by simplicial structure, which serves as an illustrative and insightful paradigm for brain function and information storage. The novel dynamics of the system, including abrupt desynchronization and multistability, are rigorously characterized and the critical points that correspond to a continuum of first-order phase transitions are found to satisfy universal scaling properties. More importantly, the underlying bifurcation mechanism giving rise to multiple clusters with a…
This Letter investigates the upshots of adaptive development of pure 2- and 3- simplicial complexes (triad and tetrad) on the nature of the transition to desynchrony of the oscillator ensembles. The adaptation exercised in the pure simplicial coupling takes a cue from the Hebbian learning rule, i.e., the coupling weight of a triad (tetrad) is prone to increase if the oscillators forming it are in phase and decrease if they are out of phase. The coupling weights in these pure simplicial complexes experiencing such adaptation give rise to first-order routes to desynchronization, whose onsets are…
We study ensembles of globally coupled, nonidentical phase oscillators subject to correlated noise, and we identify several important factors that cause noise and coupling to synchronize or desychronize a system. By introducing noise in various ways, we find a novel estimate for the onset of synchrony of a system in terms of the coupling strength, noise strength, and width of the frequency distribution of its natural oscillations. We also demonstrate that noise alone is sufficient to synchronize nonidentical oscillators. However, this synchrony depends on the first Fourier mode of a phase-sens…
Adaptive coupling, where the coupling is dynamical and depends on the behaviour of the oscillators in a complex system, is one of the most crucial factors to control the dynamics and streamline various processes in complex networks. In this paper, we have demonstrated the occurrence of multi-stable states in a system of identical phase oscillators that are dynamically coupled. We find that the multi-stable state is comprised of a two cluster synchronization state where the clusters are in anti-phase relationship with each other and a desynchronization state. We also find that the phase relatio…
Understanding complex systems which exhibit desynchronization as an emergent property should have important implications, particularly in treating neurological disorders and designing efficient communication networks. Here were demonstrate how, using a system similar to the pulse coupling used to model firefly interactions, phase desynchronization can be achieved in pulse coupled oscillator systems, for a variety of network architectures, with symmetric and non symmetric internal oscillator frequencies and with both instantaneous and time delayed coupling.
Changes in the level of synchronization and desynchronization in coupled oscillator systems due to an external stimulus is called event related synchronization or desynchronization (ERS/ERD). Such changes occur in real life systems where the collective activity of the entities of a coupled system is affected by some external influence. In order to understand the role played by the external influence in the occurrence of ERD and ERS, we study a system of coupled nonlinear oscillators in the presence of an external stimulus signal. We find that the phenomena of ERS and ERD are generic and occur …
An ensemble of uncoupled limit-cycle oscillators receiving common Poisson impulses shows a range of non-trivial behavior, from synchronization, desynchronization, to clustering. The group behavior that arises in the ensemble can be predicted from the phase response of a single oscillator to a given impulsive perturbation. We present a theory based on phase reduction of a jump stochastic process describing a Poisson-driven limit-cycle oscillator, and verify the results through numerical simula- tions and electric circuit experiments. We also give a geometrical interpretation of the synchronizin…
Adaptive networks change their connectivity with time, depending on their dynamical state. While synchronization in structurally static networks has been studied extensively, this problem is much more challenging for adaptive networks. In this Letter, we develop the master stability approach for a large class of adaptive networks. This approach allows for reducing the synchronization problem for adaptive networks to a low-dimensional system, by decoupling topological and dynamical properties. We show how the interplay between adaptivity and network structure gives rise to the formation of stab…
Synchronization and emergence of a collective mode is a general phenomenon, frequently observed in ensembles of coupled self-sustained oscillators of various natures. In several circumstances, in particular in cases of neurological pathologies, this state of the active medium is undesirable. Destruction of this state by a specially designed stimulation is a challenge of high clinical relevance. Typically, the precise effect of an external action on the ensemble is unknown, since the microscopic description of the oscillators and their interactions are not available. We show, that desynchroniza…
Coupled oscillators have been used to study synchronization in a wide range of social, biological, and physical systems, including pedestrian-induced bridge resonances, coordinated lighting up of firefly swarms, and enhanced output peak intensity in synchronizing laser arrays. Here we advance this subject by studying a variant of the Kuramoto model, where the coupling between the phase oscillators is heterogeneous and nonlinear. In particular, the quenched disorder in the coupling strength and the intrinsic frequencies are correlated, and the coupling itself depends on the amplitude of the mea…
Chimera states, a symmetry-breaking spatiotemporal pattern in nonlocally coupled identical dynamical units, prevail in a variety of systems. Here, we consider a population of nonlocally coupled bicomponent phase oscillators in which oscillators with natural frequency $ω_0$ (positive oscillators) and $-ω_0$ (negative oscillators) are randomly distributed along a ring. We show the existence of chimera states no matter how large $ω_0$ is and the states manifest themselves in the form that oscillators with positive/negative frequency support their own chimera states. There are two types of chimera…
We explore chaos in the Kuramoto model with multimodal distributions of the natural frequencies of oscillators and provide a comprehensive description under what conditions chaos occurs. For a natural frequency distribution with $M$ peaks it is typical that there is a range of coupling strengths such that oscillators belonging to each peak form a synchronized cluster, but the clusters do not globally synchronize. We use collective coordinates to describe the inter- and intra-cluster dynamics, which reduces the Kuramoto model to $2M-1$ degrees of freedom. We show that under some assumptions, th…
Community structure and interaction delays are common features of ensembles of network coupled oscillators, but their combined effect on the emergence of synchronization has not been studied in detail. We study the transitions between macroscopic states in coupled oscillator systems with community structure and time delays. We show that the combination of these two properties gives rise to non-monotonic transitions, whereby increasing the global coupling strength can both inhibit and promote synchronization, yielding both desynchronization and synchronization transitions. For relatively wide p…
We investigate oscillation death in systems of coupled nonlinear oscillators with feedback loop. We find that feedback results in oscillation death both in small sets or large ensembles. More importantly, the death zone in parameter space is significantly enlarged and oscillation death could occur even in coupled identical oscillators in the presence of feedback. We find that there are two different ways to oscillation death, namely desynchronization and completely synchronization induced oscillation death. Feedback induced oscillation death may be used to suppress unexpected oscillations, e.g…
Coupled oscillator models where $N$ oscillators are identical and symmetrically coupled to all others with full permutation symmetry $S_N$ are found in a variety of applications. Much, but not all, work on phase descriptions of such systems consider the special case of pairwise coupling between oscillators. In this paper, we show this is restrictive - and we characterise generic multi-way interactions between oscillators that are typically present, except at the very lowest order near a Hopf bifurcation where the oscillations emerge. We examine a network of identical weakly coupled dynamical s…
The mechanisms and properties of synchronization of oscillating ecological populations attract attention because it is a fairly common phenomenon and because spatial synchrony may elevate a risk of extinction and may lead to other environmental impacts. Conditions for stable synchronization in a system of linearly coupled predator-prey oscillators have been considered in the past. However, the spatial dispersion coupling may be relatively weak and may not necessarily lead to a stable, complete synchrony. If the coupling between oscillators is too weak to induce a stable synchrony, oscillators …
The high-dimensional generalization of the one-dimensional Kuramoto paradigm has been an essential step in bringing about a more faithful depiction of the dynamics of real-world systems. Despite the multi-dimensional nature of the oscillators in these generalized models, the interacting schemes so far have been dominated by a scalar factor unanimously between any pair of oscillators that leads eventually to synchronization on all dimensions. As a natural extension of the scalar coupling befitting for the one-dimensional case, we take a tentative step in studying numerically and theoretically t…
Globally coupled ensembles of phase oscillators serve as useful tools for modeling synchronization and collective behavior in a variety of applications. As interest in the effects of simplicial interactions (i.e., non-additive, higher-order interactions between three or more units) continues to grow we study an extension of the Kuramoto model where oscillators are coupled via three-way interactions that exhibits novel dynamical properties including clustering, multistability, and abrupt desynchronization transitions. Here we provide a rigorous description of the stability of various multiclust…
We discuss the desynchronization transition in networks of globally coupled identical oscillators with attractive and repulsive interactions. We show that, if attractive and repulsive groups act in antiphase or close to that, a solitary state emerges with a single repulsive oscillator split up from the others fully synchronized. With further increase of the repulsing strength, the synchronized cluster becomes fuzzy and the dynamics is given by a variety of stationary states with zero common forcing. Intriguingly, solitary states represent the natural link between coherence and incoherence. The…
We present a phenomenological reduced-order model to capture the transition to thermoacoustic instability in turbulent combustors. The model is based on the framework of synchronization and considers the acoustic field and the unsteady heat release rate from turbulent reactive flow as two nonlinearly coupled sub-systems. Previous experimental studies have reported a route from low amplitude chaotic oscillation (i. e. combustion noise) to periodic oscillations through intermittency in turbulent combustors. By varying the coupling strength, our proposed model can replicate the route that is obse…
A theoretical analysis is developed on spin-torque diode effect in nonlinear region. An analytical solution of the diode voltage generated from spin-torque oscillator by the rectification of an alternating current is derived. The diode voltage is revealed to depend nonlinearly on the phase difference between the oscillator and the alternating current. The validity of the analytical prediction is confirmed by numerical simulation of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The results indicate that the spin-torque diode effect is useful to evaluate the phase of a spin-torque oscillator in forced s…
The synchronization stability of a complex network system of coupled phase oscillators is discussed. In case the network is affected by disturbances, a stochastic linearized system of the coupled phase oscillators may be used to determine the fluctuations of phase differences in the lines between the nodes and to identify the vulnerable lines that may lead to desynchronization. The main result is the derivation of the asymptotic variance matrix of the phase differences which characterizes the severity of the fluctuations. It is found that the cycle space of the graph of the system plays a role…
Synchrony is inevitable in many oscillating systems -- from the canonical alignment of two ticking grandfather clocks, to the mutual entrainment of beating flagella or spiking neurons. Yet both biological and manmade systems provide striking examples of spontaneous desynchronization, such as failure cascades in alternating current power grids or neuronal avalanches in the mammalian brain. Here, we generalize classical models of synchronization among heterogenous oscillators to include short-range phase repulsion among individuals, a property that abets the emergence of a stable desynchronized …
In this paper we consider a heterogeneous network of Haken-Kelso-Bunz (HKB) nonlinear oscillators coupled through both linear and nonlinear interaction protocols. While some work exists on a system made up of only two nonlinearly coupled HKB oscillators as a model of human dynamics during interpersonal coordination tasks, the problem of considering a network of three or more HKBs has not been fully investigated. The aim of our work is to study convergence and synchronization in networks of HKB oscillators as a paradigm of coordination in multiplayer games. Convergence results are obtained unde…
The onset of collective behavior in a population of globally coupled oscillators with randomly distributed frequencies is studied for phase dynamical models with arbitrary coupling. The population is described by a Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution of phases which includes the diffusive effect of noise in the oscillator frequencies. The bifurcation from the phase-incoherent state is analyzed using amplitude equations for the unstable modes with particular attention to the dependence of the nonlinearly saturated mode $|α_\infty|$ on the linear growth rate $γ$. In general we find $|α_\…

The collective behavior of biological oscillators has been recognized as an important problem for several decades, but its control has come into limelight only recently. Much of the focus for control has been on desynchronization of an oscillator population, motivated by the pathological neural synchrony present in essential and parkinsonian tremor. Other applications, such as the beating of the heart and insulin secretion, require synchronization, and recently there has been interest in forming clusters within an oscillator population as well. In this article, we use a formulation that allows…
We have developed a simple cellular automata model for nonlinearly coupled phase oscillators which can exhibit many important collective dynamical states found in other synchronizing systems. The state of our system is specified by a set of integers chosen from a finite set and defined on a lattice with periodic boundary conditions. The integers undergo coupled dynamics over discrete time steps. Depending on the values of coupling strength and range of coupling, we observed interesting collective dynamical phases namely: asynchronous, where all the integers oscillate incoherently; synchronized…
