We present an analytical description for the collective dynamics of oscillator ensembles with higher-order coupling encoded by simplicial structure, which serves as an illustrative and insightful paradigm for brain function and information storage. The novel dynamics of the system, including abrupt desynchronization and multistability, are rigorously characterized and the critical points that correspond to a continuum of first-order phase transitions are found to satisfy universal scaling properties. More importantly, the underlying bifurcation mechanism giving rise to multiple clusters with arbitrary ensemble size is characterized using a rigorous spectral analysis of the stable cluster states. As a consequence of $SO_2$ group symmetry, we show that the continuum of abrupt desynchronization transitions result from the instability of a collective mode under the nontrivial antisymmetric manifold in the high dimensional phase space.
The Tantalus Oscillator is a non linear hydrodynamic oscillator with an attractive limit cycle. In this study we pursue the construction of a biparametric bifurcation diagram for the Tantalus Oscillator under biphasics perturbations. That is the first time that this kind of diagram is built for this kind of oscillator under biphasics perturbations. Results show that biphasic perturbations have no effect when the coupling time is chosen over a wide range of values. This modifies the bifurcation diagram obtain under monophasics perturbations. Now we have the appearance of periodic increment Big …
The model of a memristor-based oscillator with cubic nonlinearity is studied. The considered system has infinitely many equilibrium points, which build a line of equilibria in the phase space. Numerical modeling of the dynamics is combined with bifurcational analysis. It is shown that oscillation excitation has distinctive features of the supercritical Andronov--Hopf bifurcation and can be achieved by changing of a parameter value as well as by variation of initial conditions. Therefore the considered bifurcation is called Andronov-Hopf bifurcation with and without parameter.
Collective behavior in large ensembles of dynamical units with non-pairwise interactions may play an important role in several systems ranging from brain function to social networks. Despite recent work pointing to simplicial structure, i.e., higher-order interactions between three or more units at a time, their dynamical characteristics remain poorly understood. Here we present an analysis of the collective dynamics of such a simplicial system, namely coupled phase oscillators with three-way interactions. The simplicial structure gives rise to a number of novel phenomena, most notably a conti…
The traditional phase sensitivity function (PSF) has manifested its efficacy in investigating synchronization behaviors for limit-cycle oscillators. However, some subtle details may be ignored when the phase value is accumulated in space or the perturbation is space-dependent. In this paper, we compared spatial PSF with the traditional PSF for oscillators close to the saddle-node homoclinic (SNH) bifurcation, also known as saddle-node on invariant circle (SNIC) bifurcation. It is found that the spatial phase sensitivity function could reveal the phase accumulation feature on the limit cycle. M…
An incorporation of higher-order interactions is known to lead an abrupt first-order transition to synchronization in otherwise smooth second-order one for pair-wise coupled systems. Here, we show that adaptation in higher-order coupling strength may yield completely different phenomena, notably, second-order transition to synchronization and tiered synchronization. Using the Ott-Antonsen approach, we perform rigorous theoretical calculations illustrating the origin of these emerging phenomena along with a complete description of all (un)stable states. Numerical simulations for limited-size ne…
We demonstrate how the pitchfork, transcritical and saddle-node bifurcations of steady states observed in dynamical systems with a finite number of isolated equilibrium points occur in systems with lines of equilibria. The exploration is carried out by using the numerical simulation and linear stability analysis applied to a model of a memristor-based oscillator. First, all the discussed bifurcation scenarios are considered in the context of systems including Chua's memristor with a piecewise-smooth characteristic. Then the memristor characteristic is changed to a function that is smooth every…
The behavior at bifurcation from global synchronization to partial synchronization in finite networks of coupled oscillators is a complex phenomenon, involving the intricate dynamics of one or more oscillators with the remaining synchronized oscillators. This is not captured well by standard macroscopic model reduction techniques which capture only the collective behavior of synchronized oscillators in the thermodynamic limit. We introduce two mesoscopic model reductions for finite sparse networks of coupled oscillators to quantitatively capture the dynamics close to bifurcation from global to…
Determining the conditions under which an active system best detects sinusoidal signals is important for numerous fields. It is known that a quiescent, deterministic system possessing a supercritical Hopf bifurcation is more sensitive to sinusoidal stimuli the closer it operates to the bifurcation. To understand signal detection in many natural settings, however, noise must be taken into account. We study the Fokker-Planck equation describing the sinusoidally forced dynamics of a noisy supercritical or subcritical Hopf oscillator. To distinguish an oscillator's motion owing to sinusoidal forci…
The emergence of rich dynamical phenomena in coupled self-sustained oscillators, primarily synchronization and amplitude death, has attracted considerable interest in several fields of science and engineering. Here, we present a comprehensive theoretical study on the manifestation of these exquisite phenomena in a reduced-order model of two coupled Rijke tube oscillators, which are prototypical thermoacoustic oscillators. We characterize the dynamical behaviors of two such identical and non-identical oscillators by varying both system parameters (such as the uncoupled amplitudes and the natura…
For a system of globally pulse-coupled phase-oscillators, we derive conditions for stability of the completely synchronous state and all possible two-cluster states and explain how the different states are naturally connected via bifurcations. The coupling is modeled using the phase-response-curve (PRC), which measures the sensitivity of each oscillator's phase to perturbations. For large systems with a PRC, which turns to zero at the spiking threshold, we are able to find the parameter regions where multiple stable two-cluster states coexist and illustrate this by an example. In addition, we …
We study the bifurcations and the chaotic behaviour of a periodically forced double-well Duffing oscillator coupled to a single-well Duffing oscillator. Using the amplitude and the frequency of the driving force as control parameters, we show that our model presents phenomena which were not observed in coupled periodically forced Duffing oscillators with identical potentials. In the regime of relatively weak coupling, bubbles of bifurcations and chains of symmetry-breaking are identified. For much stronger couplings, Hopf bifurcations born from orbits of higher periodicity and supercritical Ne…
A P-spice simulation followed by an experiment with a unijunction transistor (UJT) has been carried out to investigate stochastic resonance (SR) in which the response of a nonlinear system to a weak periodic input signal is amplified by an optimum level of noise. The experiments were carried out in the vicinity of homoclinic bifurcation and the quantification of SR has been done by normal variance (NV) and signal to noise ratio (SNR) techniques. We have also developed a tentative mathematical model based on the current-voltage characteristic of the UJT and obtained a second order differential …
The competing effect of heterogeneity and symmetry breaking coupling on the emerging dynamics in a system of N globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators is investigated. Increasing the heterogeneity, using the standard deviation of the Hopf bifurcation parameter, favors the macroscopic oscillatory state for low values of the symmetry breaking coupling and inhomogeneous steady state for larger values of the coupling. There is also a transition, tipping, to homogeneous steady state (aging state) from the macroscopic oscillatory state. The limiting factor in the diffusive coupling favors the mac…
With the recent development of analytical methods for studying the collective dynamics of coupled oscillator systems, the dynamics of communities of coupled oscillators have received a great deal of attention in the nonlinear dynamics community. However, the majority of these works treat systems with a number of symmetries to simplify the analysis. In this work we study the role of symmetry and symmetry-breaking in the collective dynamics of coupled oscillator communities, allowing for a comparison between the macroscopic dynamics of symmetric and asymmetric systems. We begin by treating the s…
From biology to social science, the functioning of a wide range of systems is the result of elementary interactions which involve more than two constituents, so that their description has unavoidably to go beyond simple pairwise-relationships. Simplicial complexes are therefore the mathematical objects providing a faithful representation of such systems. We here present a complete theory of synchronization of $D$-dimensional oscillators obeying an extended Kuramoto model, and interacting by means of 1- and 2- simplices. Not only our theory fully describes and unveils the intimate reasons and m…

A twisted state is an important yet simple form of collective dynamics in an oscillatory medium. Here, we describe a nontrivial type of twisted state in a system of nonlocally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. The nontrivial twisted state (NTS) is a coherent traveling wave characterized by inhomogeneous profiles of amplitudes and phase gradients, which can be assigned a winding number. To further investigate its properties, several methods are employed. We perform a linear stability analysis in the continuum limit and compare the results with Lyapunov exponents obtained in a finite-size syste…
A theoretical analysis is presented to show the general occurrence of phase clusters in weakly, globally coupled oscillators close to a Hopf bifurcation. Through a reductive perturbation method, we derive the amplitude equation with a higher order correction term valid near a Hopf bifurcation point. This amplitude equation allows us to calculate analytically the phase coupling function from given limit-cycle oscillator models. Moreover, using the phase coupling function, the stability of phase clusters can be analyzed. We demonstrate our theory with the Brusselator model. Experiments are carri…
We prove that any non zero inertia, however small, is able to change the nature of the synchronization transition in Kuramoto-like models, either from continuous to discontinuous, or from discontinuous to continuous. This result is obtained through an unstable manifold expansion in the spirit of J.D. Crawford, which features singularities in the vicinity of the bifurcation. Far from being unwanted artifacts, these singularities actually control the qualitative behavior of the system. Our numerical tests fully support this picture.
Oscillators - dynamical systems with stable periodic orbits - arise in many systems of physical, technological, and biological interest. The standard phase reduction, a model reduction technique based on isochrons, can be unsuitable for oscillators which have a small-magnitude negative nontrivial Floquet exponent. This necessitates the use of the augmented phase reduction, a recently devised two-dimensional reduction technique based on isochrons and isostables. In this article, we calculate analytical expressions for the augmented phase reduction for two dynamically different planar systems: p…
In the context of the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators with distributed natural frequencies interacting through a time-delayed mean-field, we derive as a function of the delay exact results for the stability boundary between the incoherent and the synchronized state and the nature in which the latter bifurcates from the former at the critical point. Our results are based on an unstable manifold expansion in the vicinity of the bifurcation, which we apply to both the kinetic equation for the single-oscillator distribution function in the case of a generic frequency distribution and the cor…
Synchronization among rhythmic elements is modeled by coupled phase-oscillators each of which has the so-called natural frequency. A symmetric natural frequency distribution induces a continuous or discontinuous synchronization transition from the nonsynchronized state, for instance. It has been numerically reported that asymmetry in the natural frequency distribution brings new types of bifurcation diagram having, in the order parameter, oscillation or a discontinuous jump which emerges from a partially synchronized state. We propose a theoretical classification method of five types of bifurc…
This Letter investigates the upshots of adaptive development of pure 2- and 3- simplicial complexes (triad and tetrad) on the nature of the transition to desynchrony of the oscillator ensembles. The adaptation exercised in the pure simplicial coupling takes a cue from the Hebbian learning rule, i.e., the coupling weight of a triad (tetrad) is prone to increase if the oscillators forming it are in phase and decrease if they are out of phase. The coupling weights in these pure simplicial complexes experiencing such adaptation give rise to first-order routes to desynchronization, whose onsets are…
We develop a model of bistable oscillator with nonlinear dissipation. Using a numerical simulation and an electronic circuit realization of this system we study its response to additive noise excitations. We show that depending on noise intensity the system undergoes multiple qualitative changes in the structure of its steady-state probability density function (PDF). In particular, the PDF exhibits two pitchfork bifurcations versus noise intensity, which we describe using an effective potential and corresponding normal form of the bifurcation. These stochastic effects are explained by the part…
In this paper, an attempt has been made to understand the parametric excitation of a periodic orbit of nonlinear oscillator which can be a limit cycle, center or a slowly decaying center-type oscillation. For this a delay model is considered with nonlinear feedback oscillator defined in terms of Liénard oscillator description which can give rise to any one of the periodic orbits stated above. We have characterized the resonance and antiresonance behaviour for arbitrary nonlinear system from their stability and bifurcation analyses in reference to the standard delayed van der Pol system. An app…

A bifurcation theory for a system of globally coupled phase oscillators is developed based on the theory of rigged Hilbert spaces. It is shown that there exists a finite-dimensional center manifold on a space of generalized functions. The dynamics on the manifold is derived for any coupling functions. When the coupling function is $\sin θ$, a bifurcation diagram conjectured by Kuramoto is rigorously obtained. When it is not $\sin θ$, a new type of bifurcation phenomenon is found due to the discontinuity of the projection operator to the center subspace.
We study a triangular network of three populations of coupled phase oscillators with identical frequencies. The populations interact nonlocally, in the sense that all oscillators are coupled to one another, but more weakly to those in neighboring populations than to those in their own population. This triangular network is the simplest discretization of a continuous ring of oscillators. Yet it displays an unexpectedly different behavior: in contrast to the lone stable chimera observed in continuous rings of oscillators, we find that this system exhibits \emph{two coexisting stable chimeras}. B…
In this paper we report the occurrence of sliding bifurcations admitted by the memristive Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua circuit \cite{icha13} and the memristive driven Chua oscillator \citep{icha11}. Both of these circuits have a flux-controlled active memristor designed by the authors in 2011, as their non-linear element. The three segment piecewise-linear characteristic of this memristor bestows on the circuits two discontinuity boundaries, dividing their phase spaces into three sub-regions. For proper choice of parameters, these circuits take on a degree of smoothness equal to one at each of their…
Experimental evidence suggests that the computational state of cortical systems change according to behavioral and stimulus context. However, it is still unknown what mechanisms underlie this adaptive processing in cortical circuitry. In this paper, we present a model of randomly coupled supercritical Andronov-Hopf oscillators which can act as an adaptive processor by exhibiting drastically different dynamics depending on the value of a single network parameter. Despite being only composed of supercritical subunits, the full system can exhibit either supercritical or subcritical Andronov-Hopf …
When a driven oscillator loses phase-locking to a master oscillator via a Hopf bifurcation, it enters a bounded-phase regime in which its average frequency is still equal to the master frequency, but its phase displays temporal oscillations. Here we characterize these two synchronization regimes in a laser experiment, by measuring the spectrum of the phase fluctuations across the bifurcation. We find experimentally, and confirm numerically, that the low frequency phase noise of the driven oscillator is strongly suppressed in both regimes in the same way. Thus the long-term phase stability of t…
We propose a novel and systematic method for coarse-graining oscillator networks described by phase equations. Our coarse-graining method enables us to obtain the closed coarse-grained equations for a few effective eigenmodes, which is based on the eigenvalue problem of the linearized system around the phase-locked solution and a nonlinear transformation. We demonstrate our method by applying it to oscillator dynamics on a random graph, which exhibits a saddle-node bifurcation at the bifurcation point.
We study two-cluster solutions of an ensemble of generic limit-cycle oscillators in the vicinity of a Hopf bifurcation, i.e. Stuart-Landau oscillators, with a nonlinear global coupling. This coupling leads to conserved mean-field oscillations acting back on the individual oscillators as a forcing. A reduction to two effective equations makes a linear stability analysis of the cluster solutions possible. These equations exhibit a $π$-rotational symmetry, leading to a complex bifurcation structure and a wide variety of solutions. In fact, the principal bifurcation structure resembles that of a 2…
Different types of synchronization states are found when non-linear chemical oscillators are embedded into an active medium that interconnects the oscillators but also contributes to the system dynamics. Using different theoretical tools, we approach this problem in order to describe the transition between two such synchronized states. Bifurcation and continuation analysis provide a full description of the parameter space. Phase approximation modeling allows the calculation of the oscillator periods and the bifurcation point.
Astounding properties of biological sensors can often be mapped onto a dynamical system in the vicinity a bifurcation. For mammalian hearing, a Hopf bifurcation description has been shown to work across a whole range of scales, from individual hair bundles to whole regions of the cochlea. We reveal here the origin of this scale-invariance, from a general level, applicable to all neuronal dynamics in the vicinity of a Hopf bifurcation (embracing, e.g., Hodgkin-Huxley equations). When coupled by natural 'force-coupling', ensembles of Hopf oscillators below bifurcation threshold exhibit a collect…
Model reduction techniques have been widely used to study the collective behavior of globally coupled oscillators. However, most approaches assume that there are infinitely many oscillators. Here we propose a new ansatz, based on the collective coordinate approach, that reproduces the collective dynamics of the Kuramoto model for finite networks to high accuracy, yields the same bifurcation structure in the thermodynamic limit of infinitely many oscillators as previous approaches, and additionally captures the dynamics of the order parameter in the thermodynamic limit, including critical slowi…

The long-term mean-field dynamics of coupled underdamped Duffing oscillators driven by an external periodic signal with Gaussian noise is investigated. A Boltzmann-type H-theorem is proved for the associated nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation to ensure that the system can always be relaxed to one of the stationary states as time is long enough. Based on a general framework of the linear response theory, the linear dynamical susceptibility of the system order parameter is explicitly deduced. With the spectral amplification factor as a quantifying index, calculation by the method of moments disclo…
The simplest ring oscillator is made from three strongly nonlinear elements repressing each other unidirectionally resulting in the emergence of a limit cycle. A popular implementation of this scheme uses repressive genes in bacteria creating the synthetic genetic oscillator known as the Repressilator. Here, we consider the main collective modes produced when two identical Repressilators are mean-field coupled via the quorum sensing (QS) mechanism which is realized via production of diffusive signal molecules. Using the rate of the repressor's production and the value of coupling strength as t…
A model for synchronization of globally coupled phase oscillators including ``inertial'' effects is analyzed. In such a model, both oscillator frequencies and phases evolve in time. Stationary solutions include incoherent (unsynchronized) and synchronized states of the oscillator population. Assuming a Lorentzian distribution of oscillator natural frequencies, $g(Ω)$, both larger inertia or larger frequency spread stabilize the incoherent solution, thereby making harder to synchronize the population. In the limiting case $g(Ω)=δ(Ω)$, the critical coupling becomes independent of inertia. A rich…
Cascades arise in many contexts (e.g., neuronal avalanches, social contagions, and system failures). Despite evidence that propagations often involve higher-order dependencies, cascade theory has largely focused on models with pairwise/dyadic interactions. Here, we develop a simplicial threshold model (STM) for nonlinear cascades over simplicial complexes that encode dyadic, triadic and higher-order interactions. We study STM cascades over ``small-world'' models that contain both short- and long-range $k$-simplices, exploring how spatio-temporal patterns manifest as a frustration between local…
Using the model of a generalized Van der Pol oscillator in the regime of subcritical Hopf bifurcation we investigate the influence of time delay on noise-induced oscillations. It is shown that for appropriate choices of time delay either suppression or enhancement of coherence resonance can de achieved. Analytical calculations are combined with numerical simulations and experiments on an electronic circuit.
The olfactory system is constantly solving pattern-recognition problems by the creation of a large space to codify odour representations and optimizing their distribution within it. A model of the Olfactory Bulb was developed by Z. Li and J. J. Hopfield Li and Hopfield (1989) based on anatomy and electrophysiology. They used nonlinear simulations observing that the collective behavior produce an oscillatory frequency. Here, we show that the Subthreshold hopf bifurcation is a good candidate for modeling the bulb and the Subthreshold subcritical hopf bifurcation is a good candidate for modeling …
The higher-order interactions of complex systems, such as the brain are captured by their simplicial complex structure and have a significant effect on dynamics. However, the existing dynamical models defined on simplicial complexes make the strong assumption that the dynamics resides exclusively on the nodes. Here we formulate the higher-order Kuramoto model which describes the interactions between oscillators placed not only on nodes but also on links, triangles, and so on. We show that higher-order Kuramoto dynamics can lead to an explosive synchronization transition by using an adaptive co…
