Coupled oscillator models where $N$ oscillators are identical and symmetrically coupled to all others with full permutation symmetry $S_N$ are found in a variety of applications. Much, but not all, work on phase descriptions of such systems consider the special case of pairwise coupling between oscillators. In this paper, we show this is restrictive - and we characterise generic multi-way interactions between oscillators that are typically present, except at the very lowest order near a Hopf bifurcation where the oscillations emerge. We examine a network of identical weakly coupled dynamical systems that are close to a supercritical Hopf bifurcation by considering two parameters, $ε$ (the strength of coupling) and $λ$ (an unfolding parameter for the Hopf bifurcation). For small enough $λ>0$ there is an attractor that is the product of $N$ stable limit cycles; this persists as a normally hyperbolic invariant torus for sufficiently small $ε>0$. Using equivariant normal form theory, we derive a generic normal form for a system of coupled phase oscillators with $S_N$ symmetry. For fixed $N$ and taking the limit $0<ε\llλ\ll 1$, we show that the attracting dynamics of the system on the torus can be well approximated by a coupled phase oscillator system that, to lowest order, is the well-known Kuramoto-Sakaguchi system of coupled oscillators. The next order of approximation genericlly includes terms with up to four interacting phases, regardless of $N$. Using a normalization that maintains nontrivial interactions in the limit $N\rightarrow \infty$, we show that the additional terms can lead to new phenomena in terms of coexistence of two-cluster states with the same phase difference but different cluster size.
Synchronization of coupled harmonic oscillators is investigated. Coupling considered here is pairwise, unidirectional, and described by a nonlinear function (whose graph resides in the first and third quadrants) of some projection of the relative distance (between the states of the pair being coupled) vector. Under the assumption that the interconnection topology defines a connected graph, it is shown that the synchronization manifold is semiglobally practically asymptotically stable in the frequency of oscillations.
This paper addresses the amplitude and phase dynamics of a large system non-linear coupled, non-identical damped harmonic oscillators, which is based on recent research in coupled oscillation in optomechanics. Our goal is to investigate the existence and stability of collective behaviour which occurs due to a play-off between the distribution of individual oscillator frequency and the type of nonlinear coupling. We show that this system exhibits synchronisation, where all oscillators are rotating at the same rate, and that in the synchronised state the system has a regular structure related to…
We focus on the qualitative analysis of a reaction-diffusion with spatial heterogeneity. The system is a generalization of the well known FitzHugh-Nagumo system in which the excitability parameter is space dependent. This heterogeneity allows to exhibit concomitant stationary and oscillatory phenomena. We prove the existence of an Hopf bifurcation and determine an equation of the center-manifold in which the solution asymptotically evolves. Numerical simulations illustrate the phenomenon.
In this paper, we consider the traditional Van der Pol Oscillator with a forcing dependent on a delay in feedback. The delay is taken to be a nonlinear function of both position and velocity which gives rise to many different types of bifurcations. In particular, we study the Zero-Hopf bifurcation that takes place at certain parameter values using methods of centre manifold reduction of DDEs and normal form theory. We present numerical simulations that have been accurately predicted by the phase portraits in the Zero-Hopf bifurcation to confirm our numerical results and provide a physical unde…
Experimental evidence suggests that the computational state of cortical systems change according to behavioral and stimulus context. However, it is still unknown what mechanisms underlie this adaptive processing in cortical circuitry. In this paper, we present a model of randomly coupled supercritical Andronov-Hopf oscillators which can act as an adaptive processor by exhibiting drastically different dynamics depending on the value of a single network parameter. Despite being only composed of supercritical subunits, the full system can exhibit either supercritical or subcritical Andronov-Hopf …
In this paper, an attempt has been made to understand the parametric excitation of a periodic orbit of nonlinear oscillator which can be a limit cycle, center or a slowly decaying center-type oscillation. For this a delay model is considered with nonlinear feedback oscillator defined in terms of Liénard oscillator description which can give rise to any one of the periodic orbits stated above. We have characterized the resonance and antiresonance behaviour for arbitrary nonlinear system from their stability and bifurcation analyses in reference to the standard delayed van der Pol system. An app…
We consider an ecological model consisting of two species of predators competing for their common prey with explicit interference competition. With a proper rescaling, the model is portrayed as a singularly perturbed system with one-fast (prey dynamics) and two-slow variables (dynamics of the predators). The model exhibits variety of rich and interesting dynamics, including, but not limited to mixed mode oscillations (MMOs), featuring concatenation of small and large amplitude oscillations, relaxation oscillations and bistability between a semi-trivial equilibrium state and a coexistence oscil…
In this paper we consider a heterogeneous network of Haken-Kelso-Bunz (HKB) nonlinear oscillators coupled through both linear and nonlinear interaction protocols. While some work exists on a system made up of only two nonlinearly coupled HKB oscillators as a model of human dynamics during interpersonal coordination tasks, the problem of considering a network of three or more HKBs has not been fully investigated. The aim of our work is to study convergence and synchronization in networks of HKB oscillators as a paradigm of coordination in multiplayer games. Convergence results are obtained unde…
While the stochastic dynamics of two coupled oscillators have been extensively studied, most of the research has focused on stochastic input with equal intensity. However, this is often not the case in biological systems. In this study, we investigate the effects of intrinsic noise with unequal intensity on a pair of diffusively coupled lambda-omega oscillators that are quiescent without noise but become excitable with the addition of a noise stimulus. Our findings demonstrate that unequal noise can play a constructive role in inducing phase synchronization (PS) in coupled oscillators. Additio…
Dynamics in delayed differential equations (DDEs) is a well studied problem mainly because DDEs arise in models in many areas of science including biology, physiology, population dynamics and engineering. We study the dynamics arising when two identical oscillators are coupled near a Hopf bifurcation where we assume a parameter $ε$ uncouples the system at $ε=0$. Using a normal form for $N=2$ identical systems undergoing Hopf bifurcation, we explore the dynamical properties. Matching the normal form coefficients to a coupled Wilson-Cowan oscillator network gives an understanding of different types of behaviour that arise in a model of perceptual bistability. Notably, we find bistability between in-phase and anti-phase solutions that demonstrates the feasibility for synchronisation to act as the …
We study analytically the coexistence of multiple periodic solutions and invariant tori in the general Van der Pol-Duffing oscillator equations. We use several results related to the averaging method in order to analytically obtain our results. We also provide numerical examples for all the analytical results that we provide.
A Hopf bifurcation in the Kuramoto-Daido model is investigated based on the generalized spectral theory and the center manifold reduction for a certain class of frequency distributions. The dynamical system of the order parameter on a four-dimensional center manifold is derived. It is shown that the dynamical system undergoes a Hopf bifurcation as the coupling strength increases, which proves the existence of a periodic two-cluster state of oscillators.
In this paper, we investigate a reaction-diffusion-advection model with time delay effect. The stability/instability of the spatially nonhomogeneous positive steady state and the associated Hopf bifurcation are investigated when the given parameter of the model is near the principle eigenvalue of an elliptic operator. Our result implies that time delay can make the spatially nonhomogeneous positive steady state unstable for a reaction-diffusion-advection model, and the model can exhibit oscillatory pattern through Hopf bifurcation.
Distributed delays modeled by 'weak generic kernels' are introduced in the well-known coupled Landau-Stuart system, as well as a chaotic van der Pol-Rayleigh system with parametric forcing. The systems are close via the 'linear chain trick'. Linear stability analysis of the systems and conditions for Hopf bifurcation which initiates oscillations are investigated, including deriving the normal form at bifurcation, and deducing the stability of the resulting limit cycle attractor. The value of the delay parameter $a=a_{Hopf}$ at Hopf bifurcation picks out the onset of Amplitude Death(AD) in all …
Sufficient conditions for synchronization of coupled Lienard-type oscillators are investigated via averaging technique. Under the assumption that the interconnection topology defines a connected graph, it is shown that the solutions of oscillators can be made converge arbitrarily close to each other, while let initially be arbitrarily far apart, provid…
In this paper, we introduce a three-component Schnakenberg model. Its key feature is that it has a solution consisting of N spikes that undergoes a Hopf bifurcation with respect to N distinct modes nearly simultaneously. This results in complex oscillatory dynamics of the spikes, not seen in typical two-component models. For parameter values above the Hopf bifurcations, we derive reduced equations of motion which consist of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of order 2N for spike positions and their velocities. These ODEs fully describe the slow-time evolution of the spikes near th…
In recent years there has been an increasing interest in studying time-delayed coupled networks of oscillators since these occur in many real life applications. In many cases symmetry patterns can emerge in these networks, as a consequence a part of the system might repeat itself, and properties of this subsystem are representative of the dynamics on the whole phase space. In this paper an analysis of the second order N-node time-delay fully connected network is presented which is based on previous work by Correa and Piqueira \cite{Correa2013} for a 2-node network. This study is carried out us…
We analyze rate-dependent tipping in a fast/slow system with an equilibrium near the fold of a critical manifiold. We find a Hopf bifurcation as the rate parameter increases in the reduced co-moving system. This implies the growth of a limit cycle as the system changes from tracking a quasi-static equilibrium to tipping. Rather than trajectories diverging at a critical rate, they continue to track the quasi-static equilibrium in a spiral corresponding to an emerging limit cycle at the Hopf bifurcation. We apply the same analysis to a forced van der Pol oscillator to show this phenomenon in a f…
In this paper, a modified van der Pol oscillator equation is considered which appears in several heart action models. We study its global dynamics and verify many interesting bifurcations such as a Hopf bifurcation, a heteroclinic saddle connection, and a homoclinic saddle connection. Some of these bifurcations are detected by using Conley index methods. We demonstrate how the study of connection matrices and transition matrices shows how to select interesting parameter values for simulations.
The long time effect of nonlinear perturbation to oscillatory linear systems can be characterized by the averaging method, and we consider first-order averaging for its simplest applicability to high-dimensional problems. Instead of the classical approach, in which one uses the pullback of linear flow to isolate slow variables and then approximate the effective dynamics by averaging, we propose an alternative coordinate transform that better approximates the mean of oscillations. This leads to a simple improvement of the averaged system, which will be shown both theoretically and numerically t…
In this paper, new schemes to synchronize linearly or nonlinearly coupled chaotic systems with an adaptive coupling strength are proposed. Unlike other adaptive schemes, which synchronize coupled chaotic systems to a special trajectory (or an equilibrium point) of the uncoupled node by adding negative feedbacks adaptively; here, adaptive schemes for the coupling strength are used to synchronize coupled chaotic systems without knowing the synchronization trajectory. Moreover, in many applications, the state variables are not observable; instead, some functions of the states can be observed. How…
We extend the theory of weakly coupled oscillators to incorporate slowly varying inputs and parameters. We employ a combination of regular perturbation and an adiabatic approximation to derive equations for the phase-difference between a pair of oscillators. We apply this to the simple Hopf oscillator and then to a biophysical model. The latter represents the behavior of a neuron that is subject to slow modulation of a muscarinic current such as would occur during transient attention through cholinergic activation. Our method extends and simplifies the recent work of Kurebayashi (Physical Revi…
Networks of identical, symmetrically coupled oscillators can spontaneously split into synchronized and desynchronized sub-populations. Such chimera states were discovered in 2002, but are not well understood theoretically. Here we obtain the first exact results about the stability, dynamics, and bifurcations of chimera states by analyzing a minimal model consisting of two interacting populations of oscillators. Along with a completely synchronous state, the system displays stable chimeras, breathing chimeras, and saddle-node, Hopf and homoclinic bifurcations of chimeras.
We study the emergent dynamics of a network of synaptically coupled slow-fast oscillators. Synaptic coupling provides a network-level positive feedback mechanism that cooperates with cellular-level positive feedback to ignite in-phase network oscillations. Using analytical bifurcation analysis, we prove that the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector of the network adjacency matrix fully controls the oscillation pattern locally in a neighborhood of a Hopf bifurcation. Besides shifting the focus from the spectral properties of the network Laplacian matrix to the network adjacency matrix, we discuss other…

We propose a new hybrid modelling approach that combines a mechanistic model with a machine-learnt model to predict the limit cycle oscillations of physical systems with a Hopf bifurcation. The mechanistic model is an ordinary differential equation normal-form model capturing the bifurcation structure of the system. A data-driven mapping from this model to the experimental observations is then identified based on experimental data using machine learning techniques. The proposed method is first demonstrated numerically on a Van der Pol oscillator and a three-degree-of-freedom aeroelastic model.…
