Topological phase transitions occur when the electronic bands change their topological properties, typically featuring the closing of the bandgap. While the influence of topological phase transitions on electronic and optical properties has been extensively studied, its implication on phononic properties and thermal transport remains unexplored. In this work, we use first-principles simulations to show that certain phonon modes are significantly softened near topological phase transitions, leading to increased phonon-phonon scattering and reduced lattice thermal conductivity. We demonstrate this effect using two model systems: pressure-induced topological phase transition in $\rm ZrTe_5$ and chemical composition induced topological phase transition in $\rm{Hg_{1-x}Cd_{x}Te}$. We attribute the phonon softening to emergent Kohn anomalies associated with the closing of the bandgap. Our study reveals the strong connection between electronic band structures and lattice instabilities and opens up a potential direction towards controlling heat conduction in solids.
A critical discussion of calculated modulated structures, Fermi surface nesting and phonon softening in magnetic shape memory alloys Ni$_2$Mn(Ga, Ge, Al) and Co$_2$Mn(Ga, Ge)
Defects in oxides usually exhibit exotic properties that may be associated with the local lattice dynamics. Here, at atomic spatial resolution, we directly measure phonon modes of an antiphase boundary (APB) in SrTiO3 freestanding membrane and correlate them with the picometer-level structural distortion. We find that the SrTiO3 APB introduces new defect phonon modes that are absent in bulk SrTiO3. These modes are highly sensitive to the subtle structure distortion, i.e., the SrTiO3 APB generates the local electric dipoles forming an antiferroelectric configuration, which significantly softens…
Microwave measurements have recently been successfully applied to measure ferroelectric materials on the nanoscale, including detection of polarization switching and ferroelectric domain walls. Here we discuss the question whether scanning probe microscopy (SPM) operating at microwave frequency can identify the changes associated with the soft phonon dynamics in a ferroic. The analytical expressions for the electric potential, complex impedance and dielectric losses are derived and analyzed, since these physical quantities are linked to experimentally-measurable properties of the ferroic. As a…

The phonon renormalization across the semiconductor-to-metal crossover in FeSi is investigated by inelastic neutron scattering combined with \textit{ab-initio} lattice dynamical calculations. A significant part of reciprocal space with a particular focus on the 110$-$001 scattering plane is mapped by the time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering data taken below and above the crossover. Individual momentum values are investigated in more detail as a function of temperature. The data reveal that the anomalous phonon softening upon metallization is not exclusive to the high symmetry $R$ and $Γ…

In order to determine the role of non-thermal transport of hot carriers which is decisive for the dissipation of energy in condensed matter we performed time-resolved broadband femtosecond transient reflectivity measurements on $7-197 \mathrm{nm}$ thick Bi(111) films epitaxially grown on Si(111). We monitored the behavior of the Fourier amplitude and the central frequency of the coherent $A_\mathrm{1g}$ phonon mode as function of the incident fluence, film thickness, and probe wavelength in the range of $580 -700 \mathrm{nm}$. The frequency redshift that follows photoexcitation was used as a r…
Phonon softening is a ubiquitous phenomenon in condensed matter systems which is often associated with charge density wave (CDW) instabilities and anharmonicity. The interplay between phonon softening, CDW and superconductivity is a topic of intense debate. In this work, the effects of anomalous soft phonon instabilities on superconductivity are studied based on a recently developed theoretical framework that accounts for phonon damping and softening within the Migdal-Eliashberg theory. Model calculations show that the phonon softening in the form of a sharp dip in the phonon dispersion relati…
For CuInP$_2$S$_6$ layered ferrielectric crystal, that is most investigated among wide family of van der Waals ferroics MM$'$P$_2$X$_6$ (M - Cu, Ag; M$'$ - In, Bi, Cr, $\dots$; X - S, Se), by Brillouin spectroscopy the temperature dependence of the longitudinal hypersound velocity was investigated for the acoustic phonons propagated in the plane of crystal layers. Pronounced softening of acoustic phonon branch is observed in the paraelectric phase below $T^{*} \approx 330~$K at cooling to temperature $T_C \approx 312~$K of the first order phase transition into ferrielectric phase. Below $T_C$ …
Unconventional co-existence of insulating nano-regions and conducting filaments in reduced SrTiO3: mode softening, local piezoelectricity and metallicity
Among transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), VSe$_2$ is considered to develop a purely 3-dimensional (3D) charge-density wave (CDW) at T$_{CDW}$=110 K. Here, by means of high resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), we show that the CDW transition is driven by the collapse of an acoustic mode at the critical wavevector \textit{q}$_{CDW}$= (2.25 0 0.7) r.l.u. and critical temperature T$_{CDW}$=110 K. The softening of this mode starts to be pronounced for temperatures below 2$\times$ T$_{CDW}$ and expands over a rather wide region of the Brillouin zone, suggesting a large contribution of t…
In the present paper, we have discussed a new type of spontaneous symmetry breaking phases caused by the softening of the transverse acoustic phonon modes through the electron phonon coupling. These new phases include the shear density wave and self-twisting wave, which are caused by the softening of linearly and circularly polarized acoustic phonon modes, respectively. We propose that two of the topological semimetal systems in the quantum limit, where the electrons only occupy the lowest Landau bands under external magnetic field, will be the perfect systems to realize these new phases. Exot…
Historically, the soft mode theory of ferroelectric phase transitions has been developed for the high-temperature (paraelectric) phase, where the phonon mode softens upon decreasing the temperature. In the low-temperature ferroelectric phase, a similar phonon softening occurs, also leading to a bosonic condensation of the frozen-in mode at the transition, but in this case the phonon softening occurs upon increasing the temperature. Here we present a soft mode theory of ferroelectric and displacive phase transitions by describing what happens in the low-temperature phase in terms of phonon soft…
We present an ab initio approach for the calculation of phonon self-energies and their fluctuation diagnostics, which allows us to identify the electronic processes behind phonon anomalies. Application to the transition-metal-dichalcogenide monolayer 1H-TaS$_2$ reveals that coupling between the longitudinal-acoustic phonons and the electrons from an isolated low-energy metallic band is entirely responsible for phonon anomalies such as the mode softening and associated charge-density waves observed in this material. Our analysis allows us to distinguish between different mode-softening mechanis…
