Horizons of black branes have an associated entropy current with non-negative divergence. We compute this divergence in a late-time transseries expansion for an inhomogeneous system evolving towards a maximally symmetric asymptotically anti-de Sitter black brane. The horizon area equilibrates on half the time-scale set by the dominant quasinormal mode and we find a simple analytic expression for this evolution purely in terms of the background and the quasinormal mode frequencies. This computation does not require a gradient expansion and is thus non-perturbative in momenta. We generalize this to include scalar and gauge field matter in any number of dimensions. Restricting to homogeneous evolution we match and prove earlier numerical work showing that the apparent horizon entropy saturates the area theorem, in that its time derivative periodically vanishes. The same is true for spherically symmetric evolution towards the Schwarzschild black hole.
We have studied perturbations of scalar and spinor field in the background of three dimensional Gödel black hole. The wave equations are shown to be exactly solvable in terms of hypergeometric functions. The quasinormal modes are analytically calculated by imposing the Dirichlet boundary condition at spatial infinity, which are shown to be of the same form in both cases. By considering the physical interpretation of quasinormal modes, we obtain the consistent transition frequencies from the quasinormal modes of scalar and spinor field. As an application of quasinormal modes, we have also inves…
Loop quantum gravity can account for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a black hole provided a free parameter is chosen appropriately. Recently, it was proposed that a new choice of the Immirzi parameter could predict both black hole entropy and the frequencies of quasinormal modes in the large $n$ limit, but at the price of changing the gauge group of the theory. In this note we use a simple physical argument within loop quantum gravity to arrive at the same value of the parameter. The argument uses strongly the necessity of having fermions satisfying basic symmetry and conservation principle…
We obtain an exact analytic expression for the quasinormal modes of a noncommutative massless scalar field in the background of a massive spinless BTZ black hole up to the first order in the deformation parameter. We also show that the equations of motion governing these quasinormal modes are identical in form to the equations of motion of a commutative massive scalar field in the background of a fictitious massive spinning BTZ black hole. This results hints at a duality between the commutative and noncommutative systems in the background of a BTZ black hole. Using the obtained results for qua…
Calculations of black hole entropy based on the counting of modes of a quantum field propagating in a Schwarzschild background need to be regularized in the vicinity of the horizon. To obtain the Bekenstein-Hawking result the short distance cut-off needs to be fixed by hand. In this note we give an argument for obtaining this cut-off in a natural fashion. We do this by modelling the black hole by its set of quasinormal modes. The horizon then becomes a extended region: the quantum ergosphere. The interaction of the quantum ergosphere and the quantum field provides a natural regularization mech…
With the new physical interpretation of quasinormal modes proposed by Maggiore, the quantum area spectra of black holes have been investigated recently. Adopting the modified Hod's treatment, results show that the area spectra for black holes are equally spaced and the spacings are in a unified form, $\triangle A=8π\hbar$, in Einstein gravity. On the other hand, following Kunstatter's method, the studies show that the area spectrum for a nonrotating black hole with no charge is equidistant. And for a rotating (or charged) black hole, it is also equidistant and independent of the angular moment…
We find the connection between thermodynamic quantities and quasinormal frequencies in Lifshitz black holes. It is shown that the globally stable Lifshitz black holes have pure imaginary quasinormal frequencies. We also show that by employing the Maggiore's method, both the horizon area and the entropy can be quantized for these black holes.
It is argued that the quantum of area between consecutive, high overtones quasinormal modes of a black hole horizon coincides with the area gap predicted by Loop Quantum Gravity, as long as the horizon is isolated and the Barbero-Immirzi parameter is $γ\approx \sqrt{3}/6$, in agreement with the value derived from the Bekenstein-Hawking horizon entropy.
In Phys. Rev. D 78 (2008) 104018 [arXiv:0807.1481], the conclusion that "entropy eigenvalues of GB black hole are discrete and equally spaced, but the area spacing is not equidistant" was firstly presented by Kothawala, Padmanabhan and Sarkar. In this paper, using the new physical interpretation of quasinormal modes proposed by Maggiore, we calculate the quantum spectra of entropy for various types of non-rotating black holes with no charge. The spectrum is obtained by imposing Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition to the adiabatic invariant quantity. We conjecture that the spacing of entropy…
We explore the relationship between classical quasinormal mode frequencies and black hole quantum mechanics in 2+1 dimensions. Following a suggestion of Hod, we identify the real part of the quasinormal frequencies with the fundamental quanta of black hole mass and angular momentum. We find that this identification leads to the correct quantum behavior of the asymptotic symmetry algebra, and thus of the dual conformal field theory. Finally, we suggest a further connection between quasinormal mode frequencies and the spectrum of a set of nearly degenerate ground states whose multiplicity may be…
We determine the quasinormal frequencies for all gravitational perturbations of the d-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, in the infinite damping limit. Using the potentials for gravitational perturbations derived recently by Ishibashi and Kodama, we show that in all cases the asymptotic real part of the frequency is proportional to the Hawking temperature with a coefficient of log 3. Via the correspondence principle, this leads directly to an equally spaced entropy spectrum. We comment on the possible implications for the spacing of eigenvalues of the Virasoro generator in the associated ne…
We study the holographic duals of bosonic and fermionic fields and compute their Quasinormal Frequencies (QNF) by exploiting that they are massive charged fields in $\mathrm{AdS_2 \times \mathcal{K}}$. In particular, we assess the stability of the scalar and fermionic operators in Myers-Perry's black holes with equal angular momenta. We compute the central charge and the Hawking-entropy and introduce extremality parameters to determine the properties of the dual CFT. Then, we briefly discuss how detection of Spin-2 fields can pave the way for more deep understanding of the holographic principl…
Using the new physical interpretation of quasinormal modes proposed by Maggiore, we calculate the area and entropy spectra for the 3-dimensioal and 5-dimensional large AdS black holes. The spectra are obtained by imposing the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition to the adiabatic invariant quantity. With this semiclassical method, we find that the spacings of the area and entropy spectra are equidistant and independent of the AdS radius of the black hole for both the cases. However, the spacings of the spectra are not the same for different dimension of space-time. The equidistant area spectr…
The quasinormal mode frequencies can be understood from the massless particles trapped at the unstable circular null geodesics and slowly leaking out to infinity. Base on this viewpoint, in this paper, we construct the quantum entropy spectrum of the stationary black holes from the null geodesics using the new physical interpretation of the quasinormal mode frequencies proposed by Maggiore. Following this idea, we calculate the spacing of the entropy spectrum for various types of black holes with or without the charge and spin in any dimension $d$ of the spacetime. The result shows that the sp…
Motivated by the recent work about a new physical interpretation of quasinormal modes by Maggiore, we investigate the quantization of near-extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes in the four dimensional spacetime. Following Kunstatter's method, we derive the area and entropy spectrum of near-extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes which differs from Setare's result. Furthermore, we find that the derived a universal area spectrum is $2πn$ which is equally spaced.
The membrane paradigm approach to black hole physics introduces the notion of a stretched horizon as a fictitious time-like surface endowed with physical characteristics such as entropy, viscosity and electrical conductivity. We show that certain properties of the stretched horizons are encoded in the quasinormal spectrum of black holes. We compute analytically the lowest quasinormal frequency of a vector-type perturbation for a generic black hole with a translationally invariant horizon (black brane) in terms of the background metric components. The resulting dispersion relation is identical …
The near-horizon geometry of a large class of extremal and near-extremal black holes in string and M theory contains three-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. Motivated by this structure, we are led naturally to a discrete set of complex frequencies defined in terms of the monodromy at the inner and outer horizons of the black hole. We show that the correspondence principle, whereby the real part of these ``non-quasinormal frequencies'' is identified with certain fundamental quanta, leads directly to the correct quantum behavior of the near-horizon Virasoro algebra, and thus the b…
One ambiguity in loop quantum gravity is the appearance of a free parameter which is called Immirzi parameter. Recently Dreyer has argued that this parameter may be fixed by considering the quasinormal mode spectrum of black holes, while at the price of changing the gauge group to SO(3) rather than the original one SU(2). Physically such a replacement is not quite natural or desirable. In this paper we study the relationship between the black hole entropy and the quasi normal mode spectrum in the loop quantization of N=1 supergravity. We find that a single value of the Immirzi parameter agrees…
In this work we discuss charged rotating black holes in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ that degenerate to extremal black holes with zero entropy. These black holes have scaling properties between charge and angular momentum similar to those of Fermi surface operators in a subsector of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. We add a massless uncharged scalar to the five dimensional supergravity theory, such that it still forms a consistent truncation of the type IIB ten dimensional supergravity and analyze its quasinormal modes. Separating the equation of motion to a radial and angular part, we proceed to solve the radial e…
We obtain the solution of a static spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by a cloud of strings in Rastall gravity and study the influence of the parameter $a$ associated with strings on the event horizon and the Hawking temperature. Through analyzing the black hole metric, we find that the static spherically symmetric black hole solution surrounded by a cloud of strings in Rastall gravity can be transformed into the static spherically symmetric black hole solution surrounded by quintessence in Einstein gravity when the parameter $β$ of Rastall gravity is positive, which provides a possib…
We reexmine some proposals of black hole entropy in loop quantum gravity (LQG) and consider a new possible choice of the Immirzi parameter which has not been pointed out so far. We also discuss that a new idea is inevitable if we regard the relation between the area spectrum in LQG and that in the quasinormal mode analysis seriously.
The spectrum of multiple level transitions of the quantum black hole is considered, and the line widths calculated. Initial evidence is found for these higher order transitions in the spectrum of quasinormal modes for Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes, further bolstering the idea that there exists a correspondence principle between quantum transitions and classical ``ringing modes''. Several puzzles are noted, including a fine-tuning problem between the line width and the level degeneracy. A more general explanation is provided for why setting the Immirzi parameter of loop quantum gravity fro…
Since the Bekenstein's proposal that a black hole has equally spaced area spectrum, the quasinormal modes as the characteristic modes of a black hole have been used in obtaining the horizon area spectrum of the black hole. However, the area spectrum of the Kerr black hole in some previous works was inconsistent with the Bekenstein's proposal. In this paper, noting that black holes can have three types of resonance modes which are quasinormal modes (QNM), total transmission modes (TTM), and total reflection modes (TRM), we propose that all of these modes in highly damped regime should be used i…
Recent suggestion, that the emission of a quantum of energy corresponding to the asymptotic value of quasinormal modes of a Schwarzschild black hole should be associated with the loss of spin one punctures from the black hole horizon, fixes the Immirzi parameter to a definite value. We show that saturating the horizon with spin one punctures reproduces the earlier formula for the black hole entropy, including the $ln (area)$ correction with definite coefficient (- 3/2) for large area.
Using adiabatic invariance and the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule we investigate the entropy spectroscopy of a charged black hole of heterotic string theory. It is shown that the entropy spectrum is equally spaced identically to the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström and Kerr black holes. Since the adiabatic invariance method does not use quasinormal mode analysis, there is no need to impose the small charge limit and no confusion on whether the real part or imaginary part is responsible for the entropy spectrum.
We develop a new method to study the thermalization of time dependent retarded Green function in conformal field theories holographically dual to thin shell AdS Vaidya space times. The method relies on using the information of all time derivatives of the Green function at the shell and then evolving it for later times. The time derivatives of the Green function at the shell is given in terms of a recursion formula. Using this method we obtain analytic results for short time thermalization of the Green function. We show that the late time behaviour of the Green function is determined by the fir…
We propose that stretched horizons can be described in terms of a gas of non-interacting quasiparticles. The quasiparticles are unstable, with a lifetime set by the imaginary part of the lowest quasinormal mode frequency. If the horizon arises from an AdS/CFT style duality the quasiparticles are also the effective low-energy degrees of freedom of the finite-temperature CFT. We analyze a large class of models including Schwarzschild black holes, non-extremal Dp-branes, the rotating BTZ black hole and de Sitter space, and we comment on degenerate horizons. The quasiparticle description makes man…
Motivated by recent physical interpretation on quasinormal modes presented by Maggiore, the adiabatic quantity method given by Kunstatter is used to calculate the spectrums of a non-extremal Schwarzschild de Sitter black hole in this paper, as well as electrically charged case. According to highly damped Konoplya and Zhidenko's numerical observational results for high overtone modes\cite{Konoplya}, we found that the asymptotic non-flat spacetime structure leads two interesting facts as followings: (i) near inner event horizon, the area and entropy spectrums, which are given by $A_{en} = 8 n_1 …
We study quasinormal modes of shear gravitational perturbations for hyperscaling violating Lifshitz theories, with Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating exponents $z$ and $θ$. The lowest quasinormal mode frequency yields a shear diffusion constant which is in agreement with that obtained in previous work by other methods. In particular for theories with $z< d_i+2-θ$ where $d_i$ is the boundary spatial dimension, the shear diffusion constant exhibits power-law scaling with temperature, while for $z=d_i+2-θ$, it exhibits logarithmic scaling. We then calculate certain 2-point functions of the dual …
The entropy spectrum of a spherically symmetric black hole was derived without the quasinormal modes in the work of Majhi and Vagenas. Extending this work to rotating black holes, we quantize the entropy and the horizon area of a Kerr anti-de Sitter black hole by two methods. The spectra of entropy and area are obtained via the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule and the adiabatic invariance in the first way. By addressing the wave function of emitted (absorbed) particles, the entropy and the area are quantized in the second one. Both results show that the entropy and the area spectra are equall…
While the linear behavior of gravity in braneworld models is well understood, much less is known about full non-linear gravitational effects. Even when they agree at the linear level, these could be expected to distinguish braneworlds from a lower-dimensional theory with no brane. Black holes are a good testing ground for such studies, as they are nonlinear solutions that would be expected to reflect the background geometry. In particular, we assess the role of black hole quasinormal modes in gravitational experiments devised to be sensitive to the existence of the brane, in a lower-dimensiona…
We consider a family of 4-dimensional black hole solutions from Dehnen et al. ( Grav. Cosmol. 9:153, arXiv: gr-qc/0211049, 2003) governed by natural number $q= 1, 2, 3 , \dots$, which appear in the model with anisotropic fluid and the equations of state: $p_r = -ρ(2q-1)^{-1}$, $p_t = - p_r$, where $p_r$ and $p_t$ are pressures in radial and transverse directions, respectively, and $ρ> 0$ is the density. These equations of state obey weak, strong and dominant energy conditions. For $q = 1$ the metric of the solution coincides with that of the Reissner-Nordström one. The global structure of solu…
We study the propagation of massless fermionic fields in the background of a three-dimensional Lifshitz black hole, which is a solution of conformal gravity. The black hole solution is characterized by a null dynamical exponent. Then, we compute analytically the quasinormal modes, the area spectrum, and the absorption cross section for fermionic fields. The analysis of the quasinormal modes shows that the fermionic perturbations are stable in this background. The area and entropy spectrum are evenly spaced. At the low frequency limit, it is observed that there is a range of values of the angul…
The physical interpretation of black hole's quasinormal modes is fundamental for realizing unitary quantum gravity theory as black holes are considered theoretical laboratories for testing models of such an ultimate theory and their quasinormal modes are natural candidates for an interpretation in terms of quantum levels. The spectrum of black hole's quasinormal modes can be re-analysed by introducing a black hole's effective temperature which takes into account the fact that, as shown by Parikh and Wilczek, the radiation spectrum cannot be strictly thermal. This issue changes in a fundamental…
In this paper, we investigate the fermions Hawking radiation and quasinormal modes in infra-red modified Ho$\check{r}$ava-Lifshitz gravity under tunneling and perturbation perspectives.Firstly, through the fermions tunneling in IR modified Ho$\check{r}$ava-Lifshitz gravity,we obtain the Hawking radiation emission rate, tunneling temperature and entropy for the Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole. It is found that the results of fermions tunneling are in consistence with the thermodynamics results obtained by calculating surface gravity.Secondly, we numerically calculate the lowing quasinormal modes fr…
In this work we consider black holes surrounded by anisotropic fluids in four dimensions. We first study the causal structure of these solutions showing some similarities and differences with Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes. In addition, we consider scalar perturbations on this background geometry and compute the corresponding quasinormal modes. Moreover, we discuss the late-time behavior of the perturbations finding an interesting new feature, i.e., the presence of a subdominant power-law tail term. Likewise, we compute the Bekenstein entropy bound and the first semiclassical correct…
Gauss-Bonnet holographic fluid is a useful theoretical laboratory to study the effects of curvature-squared terms in the dual gravity action on transport coefficients, quasinormal spectra and the analytic structure of thermal correlators at strong coupling. To understand the behavior and possible pathologies of the Gauss-Bonnet fluid in $3+1$ dimensions, we compute (analytically and non-perturbatively in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling) its second-order transport coefficients, the retarded two- and three-point correlation functions of the energy-momentum tensor in the hydrodynamic regime as well as …
We study the quasinormal modes and non-linear dynamics of a simplified model of semi-holography, which consistently integrates mutually interacting perturbative and strongly coupled holographic degrees of freedom such that the full system has a total conserved energy. We show that the thermalization of the full system can be parametrically slow when the mutual coupling is weak. For typical homogeneous initial states, we find that initially energy is transferred from the black brane to the perturbative sector, later giving way to complete transfer of energy to the black brane at a slow and cons…
Parikh and Wilczek have shown that Hawking radiation's spectrum cannot be strictly thermal. Such a non-strictly thermal character implies that the spectrum is also not strictly continuous and thus generates a natural correspondence between Hawking radiation and black hole's quasinormal modes. This issue endorses the idea that, in an underlying unitary quantum gravity theory, black holes result highly excited states. We use this key point to re-analyze the spectrum of black hole's quasinormal modes by introducing a black hole's effective temperature. Our analysis changes the physical understand…
We estimate the entropy associated to a background of squeezed cosmic gravitons, and we argue that the process of cosmological pair production from the vacuum may explain the large amount of entropy of our present universe.
Recently it has been proposed that a strange logarithmic expression for the so-called Barbero-Immirzi parameter, which is one of the ingredients that are necessary for Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) to predict the correct black hole entropy, is not another sign of the inconsistency of this approach to quantization of General Relativity, but is rather a meaningful number that can be independently justified in classical GR. The alternative justification involves the knowledge of the real part of the frequencies of black hole quasinormal states whose imaginary part blows up. In this paper we present …
We study the evolution of black hole entropy and temperature in collapse scenarios, finding three generic lessons. First, entropy evolution is extensive. Second, at large times, entropy and temperature ring with twice the frequency of the lowest quasinormal mode. Third, the entropy oscillations saturate black hole area theorems in general relativity. The first two features are characteristic of entanglement dynamics in `democratic' models. Solely based on general relativity and Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula, our results point to democratic models as microscopic theories of black holes. Th…

We find that the ambiguity term of approximate Killing vector field is responsible for the entropy production term. Without the ambiguity term, pure Einstein theory and $f(R)$ satisfy the relation of thermodynamic equilibrium. Considering such an ambiguity term of approximate Killing vector field, we can get the entropy production term and the entropy in $f(R)$ with a form defined by Jacobson. In pure Einstein theory, the shear term is the only geometric contribution of entropy production term, while in $f(R)$ it can also contribute. We believe our approach and conclusion can be generalized to…
The entropy growth in a cosmological process of pair production is completely determined by the associated squeezing parameter, and is insensitive to the number of particles in the initial state. The total produced entropy may represent a significant fraction of the entropy stored today in the cosmic black-body radiation, provided pair production originates from a change in the background metric at a curvature scale of the Planck order.
We compute the entanglement entropy of soft gluons in the wave function of a fast moving hadron and discuss its basic properties. We also derive the expression for entropy production in a high energy hadronic collision within the Color Glass formalism. We show that long range rapidity correlations give negative contribution to the production entropy. We calculate the (naturally defined) temperature of the produced system of particles, and show that it is proportional to the average transverse momentum of the produced particles.
