It is argued that the quantum of area between consecutive, high overtones quasinormal modes of a black hole horizon coincides with the area gap predicted by Loop Quantum Gravity, as long as the horizon is isolated and the Barbero-Immirzi parameter is $γ\approx \sqrt{3}/6$, in agreement with the value derived from the Bekenstein-Hawking horizon entropy.
Modifying black hole horizon can drastically change the spectrum of quasinormal modes. But if the modification is close enough to the horizon the ringdown signal remains almost unaltered, and well described by the quasinormal modes of the original GR solution. I show how the original quasinormal modes emerge in the sum over the new modes.
We study the scalar perturbation in the background of the charged Kaluza-Klein black holes with squashed horizons. We find that the position of infinite discontinuities of the heat capacities can be reflected in quasinormal spectrum. This shows the possible non-trivial relation between the thermodynamical and dynamical properties of black holes.
Coherent or semiclassical states in canonical quantum gravity describe the classical Schwarzschild space-time. By tracing over the coherent state wavefunction inside the horizon, a density matrix is derived. Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is obtained from the density matrix, modulo the Immirzi parameter. The expectation value of the area and curvature operator is evaluated in these states. The behaviour near the singularity of the curvature operator shows that the singularity is resolved. We then generalise the results to space-times with spherically symmetric apparent horizons.
In this paper, we analytically calculate the quasinormal modes of scalar, vector, tensor, and spinor perturbations of the warped dS$_3$ black hole. There are two horizons for the warped dS$_3$ black hole, namely, the black hole horizon $r_b$ and the cosmological horizon $r_c$. In the calculation, we impose the ingoing boundary condition at the black hole horizon and the outgoing boundary condition at the cosmological horizon. We also investigate the hidden conformal symmetry of the warped dS$_3$ black hole in the region between the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon $r_b<r<r_c$. W…
We analytically investigate the quasinormal modes of the massive scalar field with a nonminimal coupling in the higher-dimensional de Sitter black hole with a single rotation. According to the separated scalar field equation, the boundary conditions of quasinormal modes are well constructed at the outer and cosmological horizons. Then, under near-extremal conditions, where the outer horizon closes to the cosmological horizon, the quasinormal frequencies are obtained and generalized to universal form in the higher-dimensional spacetime. Here, the real part of the frequency includes the scalar f…
We consider the quasinormal modes for a class of black hole spacetimes that, informally speaking, contain a closely ``squeezed'' pair of horizons. (This scenario, where the relevant observer is presumed to be ``trapped'' between the horizons, is operationally distinct from near-extremal black holes with an external observer.) It is shown, by analytical means, that the spacing of the quasinormal frequencies equals the surface gravity at the squeezed horizons. Moreover, we can calculate the real part of these frequencies provided that the horizons are sufficiently close together (but not necessa…
Hod's proposal claims that the least damped quasinormal mode of a black hole must have the imaginary part smaller than half of the surface gravity at the event horizon. The Strong Cosmic Censorship in General Relativity implies that this bound must be even weaker: half of the surface gravity at the Cauchy horizon. The appealing question is whether these bounds are limited by the Einstein theory only? Here we will present numerical evidence that once the black hole size is much smaller than then the radius of the cosmological horizon, both the Hod's proposal and the strong cosmic censorship bou…
We find an exact black hole solution with a minimally coupled scalar field. The corresponding spacetime has two horizons and one of the them is the black hole event horizon and the other is the cosmic horizon. In this sense, the solution is analogous to the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (or anti-de Sitter) spacetime. We investigate the thermodynamics and construct the first law of thermodynamics. At the same time, we make a study on the shadow and quasinormal modes of this black hole solution.
We study the quasinormal mode eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the Teukolsky equation in a horizon penetrating, hyperboloidally compactified (HPHC) coordinate system. Following earlier work by Zenginoğlu (arXiv:1102.2451), we show that the quasinormal eigenfunctions for the Teukolsky equation are regular from the black hole horizon to future null infinity in these coordinates. We then present several example quasinormal eigenfunction solutions, and study some of their properties in the near-extremal Kerr limit.
Using the WKB method, we show that the peak location ($r_{\rm peak}$) of the potential, which determines the quasinormal mode frequency of the Kerr black hole, obeys an accurate empirical relation as a function of the specific angular momentum $a$ and the gravitational mass $M$. If the quasinormal mode with $a/M \sim 1$ is observed by gravitational wave detectors, we can confirm the black-hole space-time around the event horizon, $r_{\rm peak}=r_+ +O(\sqrt{1-q})$ where $r_+$ is the event horizon radius. While if the quasinormal mode is different from that of general relativity, we are forced t…
Following Bekenstein's suggestion that the horizon area of a black hole should be quantized, the discrete spectrum of the horizon area has been investigated in various ways. By considering the quasinormal mode of a black hole, we obtain the transition frequency of the black hole, analogous to the case of a hydrogen atom, in the semiclassical limit. According to Bohr's correspondence principle, this transition frequency at large quantum number is equal to classical oscillation frequency. For the corresponding classical system of periodic motion with this oscillation frequency, an action variabl…
We study the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of charged scalar in the static spherically symmetric black hole background near the event and cosmological horizon. Starting with numerical analysis of the QNMs of black hole in the dRGT massive gravity, the mathematical tool called the Asymptotic Iteration Method~(AIM) is used to calculate the quasinormal frequencies. The parameters such as the mass and charge of the black hole, the cosmological constant, the coefficient of the linear term from massive gravity $γ$, and the mass of the scalar are varied to study the behavior of the QNMs. We found the towe…
Horizons of black branes have an associated entropy current with non-negative divergence. We compute this divergence in a late-time transseries expansion for an inhomogeneous system evolving towards a maximally symmetric asymptotically anti-de Sitter black brane. The horizon area equilibrates on half the time-scale set by the dominant quasinormal mode and we find a simple analytic expression for this evolution purely in terms of the background and the quasinormal mode frequencies. This computation does not require a gradient expansion and is thus non-perturbative in momenta. We generalize this…
We show that quasinormal modes cannot exist in the extremal BTZ black hole. For this purpose, we consider propagations of a minimally coupled scalar and a single massive graviton obtained from the cosmological topologically massive gravity on the extremal BTZ black hole. The would-be quasinormal modes for a scalar and graviton could not exist because it is impossible to make an ingoing flux into the extremal (degenerate) horizon. This is consistent with the argument that there is no propagating dynamics in the self-dual orbifold of AdS(3) which is just the near-horizon limit of the extremal BT…
There has been some recent speculation that a connection may exist between the quasinormal-mode spectra of highly damped black holes and the fundamental theory of quantum gravity. This notion follows from a conjecture by Hod that the real part of the highly damped mode frequencies can be used to calibrate the semi-classical level spacing in the black hole quantum area spectrum. However, even if the level spacing can be fixed in this manner, it still remains unclear whether this implies a physically significant "duality" or merely a numerical coincidence. This tapestry of ideas serves as the mo…
It has been suggested that the highly damped quasinormal modes of black holes provide information about the microscopic quantum gravitational states underlying black hole entropy. This interpretation requires the form of the highly damped quasinormal mode frequency to be universally of the form: $\hbarω_R = \ln(l)kT_{BH}$, where $l$ is an integer, and $T_{BH}$ is the black hole temperature. We summarize the results of an analysis of the highly damped quasinormal modes for a large class of single horizon, asymptotically flat black holes.
The near-horizon geometry of a large class of extremal and near-extremal black holes in string and M theory contains three-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. Motivated by this structure, we are led naturally to a discrete set of complex frequencies defined in terms of the monodromy at the inner and outer horizons of the black hole. We show that the correspondence principle, whereby the real part of these ``non-quasinormal frequencies'' is identified with certain fundamental quanta, leads directly to the correct quantum behavior of the near-horizon Virasoro algebra, and thus the b…
We find the connection between thermodynamic quantities and quasinormal frequencies in Lifshitz black holes. It is shown that the globally stable Lifshitz black holes have pure imaginary quasinormal frequencies. We also show that by employing the Maggiore's method, both the horizon area and the entropy can be quantized for these black holes.
We calculate analytically the highly damped quasinormal mode spectra of generic single-horizon black holes using the rigorous WKB techniques of Andersson and Howls\cite{Andersson}. We thereby provide a firm foundation for previous analysis, and point out some of their possible limitations. The numerical coefficient in the real part of the highly damped frequency is generically determined by the behavior of coupling of the perturbation to the gravitational field near the origin, as expressed in tortoise coordinates. This fact makes it difficult to understand how the famous $ln(3)$ could be rela…
An exact expression for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations on a massless topological black hole in four and higher dimensions is presented. The massive scalar field is nonminimally coupled to the curvature, and the horizon geometry is assumed to have a negative constant curvature.
Quasinormal modes provide valuable information about the structure of spacetime outside a black hole. There is also a conjectured relationship between the highly damped quasinormal modes and the semi-classical spectrum of the horizon area/entropy. In this paper, we show that for spacetimes characterized by more than one scale, the "infinitely damped" modes in principle probe the structure of spacetime outside the horizon at the shortest length scales. We demonstrate this with the calculation of the highly damped quasinormal modes of the non-singular, single horizon, quantum corrected black hol…
Calculations of black hole entropy based on the counting of modes of a quantum field propagating in a Schwarzschild background need to be regularized in the vicinity of the horizon. To obtain the Bekenstein-Hawking result the short distance cut-off needs to be fixed by hand. In this note we give an argument for obtaining this cut-off in a natural fashion. We do this by modelling the black hole by its set of quasinormal modes. The horizon then becomes a extended region: the quantum ergosphere. The interaction of the quantum ergosphere and the quantum field provides a natural regularization mech…
We consider the equivalence of quasinormal modes and geodesic quantities recently brought back due to the black hole shadow observation by Event Horizon Telescope. Using WKB method we found an analytical relation between the real part of quasinormal frequencies at the eikonal limit and black hole shadow radius. We verify this correspondence with two black hole families in $4$ and $D$ dimensions, respectively.
We study in detail the quasinormal modes of linear gravitational perturbations of plane-symmetric anti-de Sitter black holes. The wave equations are obtained by means of the Newman-Penrose formalism and the Chandrasekhar transformation theory. We show that oscillatory modes decay exponentially with time such that these black holes are stable against gravitational perturbations. Our numerical results show that in the large (small) black hole regime the frequencies of the ordinary quasinormal modes are proportional to the horizon radius $r_{+}$ (wave number $k$). The frequency of the purely damp…
It is shown that the scalar wave equation in the near-horizon limit respects a hidden SL(2,R) invariance in the Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black hole spacetimes. We use the SL(2,R) symmetry to determine algebraically the purely imaginary quasinormal frequencies of the RN black hole. We confirm that these are exactly quasinormal modes of scalar perturbation around the near-extremal black hole.
Null geodesics, quasinormal modes of a massless scalar field perturbation and the correspondence with shadow radii are investigated in the background spacetime of high-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes. Based on the properties of null geodesics, we obtain the connection between the radius of a photon sphere and the radius of a horizon in the five- and six-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills spacetimes. Especially in the five-dimensional case, there exist two branches for the radius of a photon sphere, but only the branch outside the event horizon satisfies the condition of circular null …
The nonextreme Dp-brane solutions in type II supergravity(in the near-horizon limit) are expected to be dual to (p+1)-dimensional noncompact supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories at finite temperature. We study the translationally invariant perturbations along the branes in those backgrounds and calculate quasinormal frequencies numerically. These frequencies should determine the thermalization time scales in the dual Yang-Mills theories.
We study the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbation in the background of five-dimensional charged Kaluza-Klein black holes with squashed horizons immersed in the Gödel universe. Besides the influence due to the compactness of the extra dimension, we disclose the cosmological rotational effect in the wave dynamics. The wave behavior affected by the Gödel parameter provides an interesting insight into the Gödel universe.
We analyze in detail the highly damped quasinormal modes of $D$-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{\rm{o}}$m and Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{\rm{o}}$m-de Sitter black holes. We only consider the extremal case where the event horizon and the Cauchy inner horizon coincide. We show that, even though the topology of the Stokes/anti-Stokes lines in the extremal case is different than the non-extremal case, the highly damped quasinormal mode frequencies of extremal black holes match exactly with the extremal limit of the non-extremal black hole quasinormal mode frequencies.
We analyze the fermionic quasinormal modes of the BTZ black hole in the presence of space-time noncommutativity. Our analysis exploits a duality between a spinless and spinning BTZ black hole, the spin being proportional to the noncommutative deformation parameter. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we show that the horizon temperatures obtained from the dual CFT pick up noncommutative contributions. We demonstrate the equivalence between the quasinormal and non-quasinormal modes for the noncommutative fermionic probes, which provides further evidence of holography in the noncommutative setting.…
We use the inverse-dimensional expansion to compute analytically the frequencies of a set of quasinormal modes of static black holes of Einstein-(Anti-)de Sitter gravity, including the cases of spherical, planar or hyperbolic horizons. The modes we study are decoupled modes localized in the near-horizon region, which are the ones that capture physics peculiar to each black hole (such as their instabilities), and which in large black holes contain hydrodynamic behavior. Our results also give the unstable Gregory-Laflamme frequencies of Ricci-flat black branes to two orders higher in 1/D than pr…
We show that the quasinormal spectrum of gravitational perturbations of Schwarzschild - de Sitter black holes contains a new branch of purely imaginary modes. These modes are not algebraically special and we showed that the sum of them form the well-known in the literature exponential asymptotic tail. When the ratio of the event horizon radius to the cosmological horizon vanishes, these quasinormal modes approach modes of empty de Sitter spacetime. Thus, the spectrum consists of the two branches: Schwarzschild branch deformed by the cosmological constant and de Sitter branch deformed by the bl…
Stability criteria of nearly extreme black holes in the perturbations level is one of the interesting issues in gravitational systems. Considering the nearly extreme conformal-de Sitter black holes, in this paper, we obtain an exact relation for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations. As for stability criteria, we find a lower bound on the event horizon radius which is corresponding to an upper bound on the value of the quasinormal frequencies. In addition, we show that the asymptotic behavior of quasinormal modes gives highly damped modes which is important due to possible connection b…
The BTZ black hole is geometrically finite. This means that its three dimensional hyperbolic structure as encoded in its metric is in 1-1 correspondence with the Teichmuller space of its boundary, which is a two torus. The equivalence of different Teichmuller parameters related by the action of the modular group therefore requires the invariance of the monodromies of the solutions of the wave equation around the inner and outer horizons in the BTZ background. We show that this invariance condition leads to the non-quasinormal mode frequencies discussed by Birmingham and Carlip.
In this contribution, we study the quasinormal modes of a Generic--class of a regular black hole with a magnetic charge in nonlinear electrodynamics, considering scalar and electromagnetic perturbations. The Generic--class contains the Bardeen--class, Hayward--class, and New--class solutions. As the Generic--class can represent a black hole with two horizons or one horizon. First, we obtain the critical values of the magnetic charge and mass. Then, using the third--order WKB approximation, we can determine the dependence of the quasinormal modes with the parameters of the Generic--class. Final…
The spectrum of Hawking radiation by quantum fields in the curved spacetime is continuous, so the explanation of Hawking radiation using quasinormal modes can be suspected to be impossible. We find that quasinormal modes do not explain the relation between the state observed in a region far away from a black hole and the short distance behavior of the state on the horizon.
We show that in the limit where the number of spacetime dimensions D grows to infinity a very large class of black holes (including non-extremal, static, asymptotically flat ones, with any number of gauge-field charges, possibly coupled to dilatons) possess a universal set of quasinormal modes whose complex frequencies depend only on the horizon radius and no other black hole parameters. The damping ratio of these modes vanishes like $D^{-2/3}$, so they are almost normal modes, or 'quasi-particle' excitations of the black hole. The structure responsible for the existence of these modes at larg…

We find the asymptotic formula for quasinormal mode frequencies omega_n of the Dirac equation in a Schwarzschild-AdS_D background in space-time dimension D > 3, in the large black-hole limit appropriate to many applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence. By asymptotic, we mean large overtone number n with everything else held fixed, and we find the O(n^0) correction to the known leading O(n) behavior of omega_n. The result has the schematic form omega_n =~ n Delta(omega) + A ln(n) + B, where Delta(omega) and A are constants and B depends logarithmically on the (D-2)-dimensional spatial momentu…
We obtain an analytic expression for the highly damped asymptotic quasinormal mode frequencies of the $d\geq 5$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole modified by the Gauss-Bonnet term, which appears in string derived models of gravity. The analytic expression is obtained under the string inspired assumption that there exists a minimum length scale in the system and in the limit when the coupling in front of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the action is small. Although there are several similarities of this geometry with that of the Schwarzschild black hole, the asymptotic quasinormal mode frequencies …
We study the holographic duals of bosonic and fermionic fields and compute their Quasinormal Frequencies (QNF) by exploiting that they are massive charged fields in $\mathrm{AdS_2 \times \mathcal{K}}$. In particular, we assess the stability of the scalar and fermionic operators in Myers-Perry's black holes with equal angular momenta. We compute the central charge and the Hawking-entropy and introduce extremality parameters to determine the properties of the dual CFT. Then, we briefly discuss how detection of Spin-2 fields can pave the way for more deep understanding of the holographic principl…
Motivated by recent physical interpretation on quasinormal modes presented by Maggiore, the adiabatic quantity method given by Kunstatter is used to calculate the spectrums of a non-extremal Schwarzschild de Sitter black hole in this paper, as well as electrically charged case. According to highly damped Konoplya and Zhidenko's numerical observational results for high overtone modes\cite{Konoplya}, we found that the asymptotic non-flat spacetime structure leads two interesting facts as followings: (i) near inner event horizon, the area and entropy spectrums, which are given by $A_{en} = 8 n_1 …
Numerical studies of the coupled Einstein-Klein-Gordon system have recently revealed that confined scalar fields generically collapse to form caged black holes. In the light of this finding, we analytically study the characteristic resonance spectra of the confined scalar fields in rotating linear dilaton black hole geometry. Confining mirrors (cage) are assumed to be placed in the near-horizon region of a caged rotating linear dilaton black hole $\frac{r_{m}-r_{2}}{r_{2}}\ll 1$ ($r_{m}$ is the radius of the cage and $r_{2}$ represents the event horizon). The radial part of the Klein-Gordon eq…
Realistic black holes are usually dynamical, noticeable or sluggish. The Vaidya metric is a significant and tractable model for simulating a dynamical black hole. In this study, we consider scalar perturbations in a dynamical Vaidya black hole, and explore the quasinormal modes by employing the matrix method. We find the proper boundary conditions of the quasinormal modes from physical analysis in the background of a dynamical black hole for the first time. The results show that the eigenfrequencies become different at the apparent horizon and null infinity, because the physical interactions p…
There is an apparent discrepancy in the literature with regard to the quasinormal mode frequencies of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes in the degenerate-horizon limit. On the one hand, a Poschl-Teller-inspired method predicts that the real part of the frequencies will depend strongly on the orbital angular momentum of the perturbation field whereas, on the other hand, the degenerate limit of a monodromy-based calculation suggests there should be no such dependence (at least, for the highly damped modes). In the current paper, we provide a possible resolution by critically re-assessing the l…
We study the quasinormal mode and stability of optical black holes in moving dielectrics. The results show that the real part of complex frequencies is inversely proportional to but the absolute value of an imaginary part is proportional to a refractive index. We obtain the conditions for forming a black hole horizon in moving dielectrics. Moreover, we investigate the evolution behavior of optical black holes with respect to a refractive index at a high overtone number and find that an optical black hole undergoes one phase transition from an unstable mode to a stable one when the refractive i…
