We study the spectrum and dynamics of a one-dimensional discrete Dirac operator in a random potential obtained by damping an i.i.d. environment with an envelope of type $n^{-α}$ for $α>0$. We recover all the spectral regimes previously obtained for the analogue Anderson model in a random decaying potential, namely: absolutely continuous spectrum in the super-critical region $α>\frac12$; a transition from pure point to singular continuous spectrum in the critical region $α=\frac12$; and pure point spectrum in the sub-critical region $α<\frac12$. From the dynamical point of view, delocalization in the super-critical region follows from the RAGE theorem. In the critical region, we exhibit a simple argument based on lower bounds on eigenfunctions showing that no dynamical localization can occur even in the presence of point spectrum. Finally, we show dynamical localization in the sub-critical region by means of the fractional moments method and provide control on the eigenfunctions.
In this paper we continue the study (initiated in arXiv:2003.13584) of the semiclassical behavior of the scattering data of a non-self-adjoint Dirac operator with a real, positive, fairly smooth but not necessarily analytic potential decaying at infinity; in this paper we allow this potential to have several local maxima and minima. We provide the rigorous semiclassical analysis of the Bohr-Sommerfeld condition for the location of the eigenvalues, the norming constants, and the reflection coefficient.
We study a family of discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with power-like decaying potentials with rapid oscillations. In particular, for the potential $V(n)=λn^{-α}\cos(πωn^β)$, with $1<β<2α$, we prove that the spectrum is purely absolutely continuous on the spectrum of the Laplacian.
In this paper we examine the semiclassical behaviour of the scattering data of a non-self-adjoint Dirac operator with a fairly smooth but not necessarily analytic potential decaying at infinity. In particular, using ideas and methods going back to Langer and Olver, we provide the complete rigorous uniform semiclassical analysis of the scattering coefficients away (slightly) from zero, and the rigorous proof of the uniform Bohr-Sommerfeld condition for the location of the eigenvalues. Our analysis is motivated by the potential applications to the focusing cubic NLS equation, in view of the well…
We consider the Schrödinger operator $H_{ηW} = -Δ+ ηW$, self-adjoint in $L^2({\mathbb R}^d)$, $d \geq 1$. Here $η$ is a non constant almost periodic function, while $W$ decays slowly and regularly at infinity. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the discrete spectrum of $H_{ηW}$ near the origin, and due to the irregular decay of $ηW$, we encounter some non semiclassical phenomena. In particular, $H_{ηW}$ has less eigenvalues than suggested by the semiclassical intuition.
We show that spectral Hausdorff dimensional properties of discrete Schröodinger operators with (1) Sturmian potentials of bounded density and (2) a class of sparse potentials are preserved under suitable polynomial decaying perturbations, when the spectrum of these perturbed operators have some singular continuous component.
We consider one-dimensional discrete Dirac models in vanishing random environments. In a previous work [6], we showed that these models exhibit a rich phase diagram in terms of their spectrum as a function of the rate of decay of the random potential. This article is devoted to their spectral statistics. We show that the rescaled spectrum converges to the clock process for fast decay and to the Schrödinger/Sine processes from random matrix theory for critical decay. This way, we recover all the regimes previously identified for the Anderson model in a similar context [25]. Poisson statistics, …
We derive dispersion estimates for solutions of the one-dimensional discrete perturbed Dirac equation. To this end we develop basic scattering theory and establish a limiting absorption principle for discrete perturbed Dirac operators.
We consider a family of random Schrödinger operators on the discrete strip with decaying random $\ell^2$ matrix potential. We prove that the spectrum is almost surely pure absolutely continuous, apart from random, possibly embedded eigenvalues, which may accumulate at band edges.
New formulas on the inverse problem for the continuous skew-self-adjoint Dirac type system are obtained. For the discrete skew-self-adjoint Dirac type system the solution of a general type inverse spectral problem is also derived in terms of the Weyl functions. The description of the Weyl functions on the interval is given. Borg-Marchenko type uniqueness theorems are derived for both discrete and continuous non-self-adjoint systems too.
We derive dispersion estimates for solutions of a one-dimensional discrete Dirac equations with a potential. In particular, we improve our previous result, weakening the conditions on the potential. To this end we also provide new results concerning scattering for the corresponding perturbed Dirac operators which are of independent interest. Most notably, we show that the reflection and transmission coefficients belong to the Wiener algebra.
We consider the cases of the self-adjoint and skew-self-adjoint discrete Dirac systems, obtain explicit expressions for reflection coefficients and show that rational reflection coefficients and Weyl functions coincide.
In this paper, under some integrability condition, we prove that an electrical perturbation of the discrete Dirac operator has purely absolutely continuous spectrum for the one dimensional case. We reduce the problem to a non-self-adjoint Laplacian-like operator by using a spin up/down decomposition and rely on a transfermatrices technique.
We consider discrete Schr{ö}dinger operators on ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ for which the perturbation consists of the sum of a long-range type potential and a Wigner-von Neumann type potential. Still working in a framework of weighted Mourre theory, we improve the limiting absorption principle (LAP) that was obtained in [Ma1]. To our knowledge, this is a new result even in the one-dimensional case. The improvement consists in a weakening of the assumptions on the long-range potential and better LAP weights. The improvement relies only on the fact that the generator of dilations (which serves as conjugat…
A relationship between the discrete Dirac-Kähler equation and discrete analogues of some Dirac type equations in the geometric spacetime algebra is discussed. We show that a solution of the discrete Dirac-Kähler equation can be represented as the sum and difference of solutions of discrete Dirac type equations with the corresponding sign of the mass term.
A discrete analogue of the Dirac equation in the Hestenes form is constructed by introduction the Clifford product on the space of discrete forms. We discuss the relation between the discrete Dirac-Kähler equation and a discrete Hestenes equation.
Discrete models of the Dirac-Kähler equation and the Dirac equation in the Hestenes form are discussed. A discrete version of the plane wave solutions to a discrete analogue of the Hestenes equation is established.
A discrete version of the plane wave solution to some discrete Dirac type equations in the spacetime algebra is established. The conditions under which a discrete analogue of the plane wave solution satisfies the discrete Hestenes equation are briefly discussed.
We consider a one-dimensional Anderson model where the potential decays in average like $n^{-α}$, $α>0$. This simple model is known to display a rich phase diagram with different kinds of spectrum arising as the decay rate $α$ varies. We review an article of Kiselev, Last and Simon where the authors show a.c. spectrum in the super-critical case $α>\frac12$, a transition from singular continuous to pure point spectrum in the critical case $α=\frac12$, and dense pure point spectrum in the sub-critical case $α<\frac12$. We present complete proofs of the cases $α\ge\frac12$ and simplify some argum…
In this note, uniform bounds of the Birman-Schwinger operators in the discrete setting are studied. For uniformly decaying potentials, we obtain the same bound as in the continuous setting. However, for non-uniformly decaying potential, our results are weaker than in the continuous setting. As an application, we obtain unitary equivalence between the discrete Laplacian and the weakly coupled systems.
We exhibit some series of discrete spectral triples converging to the canonical spectral triple of a finite dimensional manifold. Thus the non-go theorem of Goekeler and Schuecker is reasonably bypassed.
We construct a discrete version of the plane wave solution to a discrete Dirac-Kähler equation in the Joyce form. A geometric discretisation scheme based on both forward and backward difference operators is used. The conditions under which a discrete plane wave solution satisfies a discrete Joyce equation are discussed.
We provide quantitative estimates on the location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Dirac operators with complex $\ell^p$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq\infty$. As a corollary, subsets of the essential spectrum free of embedded eigenvalues are determined for small $\ell^1$-potential. Further possible improvements and sharpness of the obtained spectral bounds are also discussed.
We investigate the long-time asymptotics for the defocusing integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. If $|n|<2t$, we have decaying oscillation of order $O(t^{-1/2})$ as was proved in our previous paper. Near $|n|=2t$, the behavior is decaying oscillation of order $O(t^{-1/3})$ and the coefficient of the leading term is expressed by the Painlevé II function. In $|n|>2t$, the solution decays more rapidly than any negative power of $n$.
Let S be a flat surface of genus g with cone type singularities. Given a bipartite graph G isoradially embedded in S, we define discrete analogs of the 2^{2g} Dirac operators on S. These discrete objects are then shown to converge to the continuous ones, in some appropriate sense. Finally, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the pair (S,G) for these discrete Dirac operators to be Kasteleyn matrices of the graph G. As a consequence, if these conditions are met, the partition function of the dimer model on G can be explicitly written as an alternating sum of the determinants of thes…
We discuss a discrete analogue of the Dirac-Kähler equation in which chiral properties of the continual counterpart are captured. We pay special attention to a discrete Hodge star operator. To build one a combinatorial construction of double complex is used. We describe discrete exterior calculus operations on a double comlex and obtain the discrete Dirac-Kähler equation using these tools. Self-dual and anti-self-dual discrete inhomogeneous forms are presented. The chiral invariance of the massless discrete Dirac-Kähler equation is shown. Moreover, in the massive case we prove that a discrete …
We construct a new discrete analog of the Dirac-Kähler equation in which some key geometric aspects of the continuum counterpart are captured. We describe a discrete Dirac-Kähler equation in the intrinsic notation as a set of difference equations and prove several statements about its decomposition into difference equations of Duffin type. We study an analog of gauge transformations for the massless discrete Dirac-Kähler equations.
An 1D tight-binding version of the Dirac equation is considered; after checking that it recovers the usual discrete Schr?odinger equation in the nonrelativistic limit, it is found that for two-valued Bernoulli potentials the zero mass case presents absence of dynamical localization for specific values of the energy, albeit it has no continuous spectrum. For the other energy values (again excluding some very specific ones) the Bernoulli Dirac system is localized, independently of the mass.
Under a perturbation by a decaying electric potential, the Landau Hamiltonian acquires some discrete eigenvalues between the Landau levels. We study the perturbation by an "expanding" electric potential $V(t^{-1}x)$, $t>0$, and derive a quasi-classical formula for the counting function of the discrete spectrum as $t\to \infty$.
In this paper we examine the semiclassical behaviour of the scattering data of a non-self-adjoint Dirac operator with analytic potential decaying at infinity. In particular, employing the exact WKB method, we provide the complete rigorous uniform semiclassical analysis of the reflection coefficient and the Bohr-Sommerfeld condition for the location of the eigenvalues. Our analysis has some interesting consequences concerning the focusing cubic NLS equation, in view of the well-known fact discovered by Zakharov and Shabat that the spectral analysis of the Dirac operator is the basis of the solu…
We study fluctuations of polynomial linear statistics for discrete Schrödinger operators with a random decaying potential. We describe a decomposition of the space of polynomials into a direct sum of three subspaces determining the growth rate of the variance of the corresponding linear statistic. In particular, each one of these subspaces defines a unique critical value for the decay-rate exponent, above which the random variable has a limit that is sensitive to the underlying distribution and below which the random variable has asymptotically Gaussian fluctuations.
We consider a 3-dimensional Dirac operator H_0 with non-constant magnetic field of constant direction, perturbed by a sign-definite matrix-valued potential V decaying fast enough at infinity. Then we determine asymptotics, as the energy goes to +m and -m, of the spectral shift function for the pair (H_0,H_0+V). We obtain, as a by-product, a generalised version of Levinson's Theorem relating the eigenvalues asymptotics of H_0+V near +m and -m to the scattering phase shift for the pair (H_0,H_0+V).
We introduce some discrete analogues of the Dirac magnetic monopole on a unit sphere S^2 and explain how to compute the corresponding spectrum using the representation theory of finite groups. The main examples are certain magnetic Laplacians on the regular polyhedral graphs, coming from induced representations of the binary polyhedral groups.
We consider perturbations of quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on the integer lattice with analytic sampling functions by decaying potentials and seek decay conditions under which various spectral properties are preserved. In the (almost) reducibility regime we prove that for perturbations with finite first moment, the essential spectrum remains purely absolutely continuous and the newly created discrete spectrum must be finite in each gap of the unperturbed spectrum. We also prove that for fixed phase, Anderson localization occurring for almost all frequencies in the regime of positive Lya…
This paper develops the theory of discrete Dirac reduction of discrete Lagrange-Dirac systems with an abelian symmetry group acting on the configuration space. We begin with the linear theory and, then, we extend it to the nonlinear setting using retraction compatible charts. We consider the reduction of both the discrete Dirac structure and the discrete Lagrange-Pontryagin principle, and show that they both lead to the same discrete Lagrange-Poincaré-Dirac equations. The coordinatization of the discrete reduced spaces relies on the notion of discrete connections on principal bundles. At last,…
A 1D Dirac tight-binding model is considered and it is shown that its nonrelativistic limit is the 1D discrete Schr?odinger model. For random Bernoulli potentials taking two values (without correlations), for typical realizations and for all values of the mass, it is shown that its spectrum is pure point, whereas the zero mass case presents dynamical delocalization for specific values of the energy. The massive case presents dynamical localization (excluding some particular values of the energy). Finally, for general potentials the dynamical moments for distinct masses are compared, especially…
A kind of Dirac-Connes operator defined in the framework of Connes' NCG is introduced on discrete abelian groups; it satisfies a Junk-free condition, and bridges the NCG composed by Dimakis, Müller-Hoissen and Sitarz and the NCG of Connes. Then we apply this operator to d-dimensional lattices.
Discrete-time quantum walks can be regarded as quantum dynamical simulators since they can simulate spatially discretized Schrödinger, massive Dirac, and Klein-Gordon equations. Here, two different types of Fibonacci discrete-time quantum walks are studied analytically. The first is the Fibonacci coin sequence with a generalized Hadamard coin and demonstrates six-step periodic dynamics. The other model is assumed to have three- or six-step periodic dynamics with the Fibonacci sequence. We analytically show that these models have ballistic transportation properties and continuous limits identic…
The one-particle Dirac Hamiltonian with Coulomb interaction is known to be realised, in a regime of large (critical) couplings, by an infinite multiplicity of distinct self-adjoint operators, including a distinguished, physically most natural one. For the latter, Sommerfeld's celebrated fine structure formula provides the well-known expression for the eigenvalues in the gap of the continuum spectrum. Exploiting our recent general classification of all other self-adjoint realisations, we generalise Sommerfeld's formula so as to determine the discrete spectrum of all other self-adjoint versions …
We study the ionization problem in the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsäcker theory for atoms and molecules. We prove the nonexistence of minimizers for the energy functional when the number of electrons is large and the total nuclear charge is small. This nonexistence result also applies to external potentials decaying faster than the Coulomb potential. In the case of arbitrary nuclear charges, we obtain the nonexistence of stable minimizers and radial minimizers.
We consider a semi-classical Dirac operator in arbitrary spatial dimensions with a smooth potential whose partial derivatives of any order are bounded by suitable constants. We prove that the distribution kernel of the inverse operator evaluated at two distinct points fulfilling a certain hypothesis can be represented as the product of an exponentially decaying factor involving an associated Agmon distance and some amplitude admitting a complete asymptotic expansion in powers of the semi-classical parameter. Moreover, we find an explicit formula for the leading term in that expansion.
We consider a two-dimensional massless Dirac operator $H$ in the presence of a perturbed homogeneous magnetic field $B=B_0+b$ and a scalar electric potential $V$. For $V\in L_{\rm loc}^p(\R^2)$, $p\in(2,\infty]$, and $b\in L_{\rm loc}^q(\R^2)$, $q\in(1,\infty]$, both decaying at infinity, we show that states in the discrete spectrum of $H$ are superexponentially localized. We establish the existence of such states between the zeroth and the first Landau level assuming that V=0. In addition, under the condition that $b$ is rotationally symmetric and that $V$ satisfies certain analyticity condit…
The aim of the present paper is to introduce the notion of first order (supersymmetric) Dirac operators on discrete and metric (``quantum'') graphs. In order to cover all self-adjoint boundary conditions for the associated metric graph Laplacian, we develop systematically a new type of discrete graph operators acting on a decorated graph. The decoration at each vertex of degree-d is given by a subspace of $\C^d$, generalising the fact that a function on the standard vertex space has only a scalar value. We develop the notion of exterior derivative, differential forms, Dirac and Laplace operato…
Quantum dynamical lower bounds for continuous and discrete one-dimensional Dirac operators are established in terms of transfer matrices. Then such results are applied to various models, including the Bernoulli-Dirac one and, in contrast to the discrete case, critical energies are also found for the continuous Dirac case with positive mass.
The aim of this work is to explore the discrete spectrum generated by complex perturbations in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^3,\mathbb{C}^4)$ of the $3d$ Dirac operator $α\cdot (-i\nabla - \textbf{A}) + m β$ with variable magnetic field. Here, $α:= (α_1,α_2,α_3)$ and $β$ are $4 \times 4$ Dirac matrices, and $m > 0$ is the mass of a particle. We give a simple criterion for the potentials to generate discrete spectrum near $\pm m$. In the case of creation of non-real eigenvalues, this criterion gives also their location.

In this paper we study random perturbations of first order elliptic operators with periodic potentials. We are mostly interested in Hamiltonians modeling graphene antidot lattices with impurities. The unperturbed operator $H_0 := D_S + V_0$ is the sum of a Dirac-like operator $D_S$ plus a periodic matrix valued potential $V_0$, and is assumed to have an open gap. The random potential $V_ω$ is of Anderson-type with independent, identically distributed coupling constants and moving centers, with absolutely continuous probability distributions. We prove band edge localization, namely that there e…
Using the variable phase method, we reformulate the Dirac equation governing the charge carriers in graphene into a nonlinear first-order differential equation from which we can treat both confined-state problems in electron waveguides and above-barrier scattering problems for arbitrary-shaped potential barriers and wells, decaying at large distances. We show that this method agrees with a known analytic result for a hyperbolic secant potential and go on to investigate the nature of more experimentally realizable electron waveguides, showing that, when the Fermi energy is set at the Dirac poin…
The most fundamental characteristics of a physical system can often be deduced from its behaviour under discrete symmetry transformations such as time reversal, parity and chirality. Here we review basic symmetry properties of the relativistic quantum theories for free electrons in (2+1)- and (1+1)-dimensional spacetime. Additional flavour degrees of freedom are necessary to properly define symmetry operations in (2+1) dimensions and are generally present in physical realisations of such systems, e.g., in single sheets of graphite. We find that there exist two possibilities for defining any fl…
