We discuss the continuum limit of discrete Dirac operators on the square lattice in $\mathbb R^2$ as the mesh size tends to zero. To this end, we propose the most natural and simplest embedding of $\ell^2(\mathbb Z_h^d)$ into $L^2(\mathbb R^d)$, which enables us to compare the discrete Dirac operators with the continuum Dirac operators in the same Hilbert space $L^2(\mathbb R^2)^2$. In particular, we prove that the discrete Dirac operators converge to the continuum Dirac operators in the strong resolvent sense. Potentials are assumed to be bounded and uniformly continuous functions on $\mathbb R^2$ and allowed to be complex matrix-valued. We also prove that the discrete Dirac operators do not converge to the continuum Dirac operators in the norm resolvent sense. This is closely related to the observation that the Liouville theorem does not hold in discrete complex analysis.
The norm resolvent convergence of discrete Schrödinger operators to a continuum Schrödinger operator in the continuum limit is proved under relatively weak assumptions. This result implies, in particular, the convergence of the spectrum with respect to the Hausdorff distance.
In this paper, we present the Dirac equation for the Mobius-square-Yukawa potentials including the tensor interaction term within the framework of pseudospin and spin symmetry limit with arbitrary spin-orbit quantum number . We obtained the energy eigenvalues and the corresponding wave functions using the supersymmetry method. The limiting cases of this potential model reduce to the Deng-Fan, Yukawa and Coulomb potentials, respectively
In this paper we introduce the Dirac and spin-Dirac operators associated to a connection on Riemann-Cartan space(time) and standard Dirac and spin-Dirac operators associated with a Levi-Civita connection on a Riemannian (Lorentzian) space(time) and calculate the square of these operators, which play an important role in several topics of modern Mathematics, in particular in the study of the geometry of moduli spaces of a class of black holes, the geometry of NS-5 brane solutions of type II supergravity theories and BPS solitons in some string theories. We obtain a generalized Lichnerowicz form…
An explicit, detailed evaluation of the classical continuum limit of the axial anomaly/index density of the overlap Dirac operator is carried out in the infinite volume setting, and in a certain finite volume setting where the continuum limit involves an infinite volume limit. Our approach is based on a novel power series expansion of the overlap Dirac operator. The correct continuum expression is reproduced when the parameter $m_0$ is in the physical region $0<m_0<2$. This is established for a broad range of continuum gauge fields. An analogous result for the fermionic topological charge, giv…
We consider the Dirac equation in one space dimension in the presence of a symmetric potential well. We connect the scattering phase shifts at E=+m and E=-m to the number of states that have left the positive energy continuum or joined the negative energy continuum respectively as the potential is turned on from zero.
It is proved that the fermionic topological charge of SU(N) lattice gauge fields on the 4-torus, given in terms of a spectral flow of the Hermitian Wilson--Dirac operator, or equivalently, as the index of the Overlap Dirac operator, reduces to the continuum topological charge in the classical continuum limit when the parameter $m_0$ is in the physical region $0<m_0<2$.
In this paper, a simple method is proposed to get analytical solutions (or with the help of a finite numerical calculations) of the Dirac-Weyl equation for low energy electrons in graphene in the presence of certain electric and magnetic fields. In order to decouple the Dirac-Weyl equation we have assumed a displacement symmetry of the system along a direction and some conditions on the magnetic and electric fields. The resulting equations have the natural form to apply the technique of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The example of an electric well with square profile is worked out in detai…
A recent proposal suggests that even if a Ginsparg-Wilson lattice Dirac operator does not possess any topological zero modes in topologically-nontrivial gauge backgrounds, it can reproduce correct axial anomaly for sufficiently smooth gauge configurations, provided that it is exponentially-local, doublers-free, and has correct continuum behavior. In this paper, we calculate the axial anomaly of this lattice Dirac operator in weak coupling perturbation theory, and show that it recovers the topological charge density in the continuum limit.
The one-particle Dirac Hamiltonian with Coulomb interaction is known to be realised, in a regime of large (critical) couplings, by an infinite multiplicity of distinct self-adjoint operators, including a distinguished, physically most natural one. For the latter, Sommerfeld's celebrated fine structure formula provides the well-known expression for the eigenvalues in the gap of the continuum spectrum. Exploiting our recent general classification of all other self-adjoint realisations, we generalise Sommerfeld's formula so as to determine the discrete spectrum of all other self-adjoint versions …
A low frequency approximation of the discrete Sommerfeld diffraction problems, involving the scattering of a time harmonic lattice wave incident on square lattice by a discrete Dirichlet or a discrete Neumann half-plane, is investigated. It is established that the exact solution of the discrete model converges to the solution of the continuum model, i.e. the continuous Sommerfeld problem, in certain discrete Sobolev space defined by W. Hackbusch. The proof of convergence has been provided for both types of boundary conditions when the imaginary part of incident wavenumber is positive.
We prove that the inverse spectral mapping reconstructing the square integrable potentials on [0,1] of Dirac operators in the AKNS form from their spectral data (two spectra or one spectrum and the corresponding norming constants) is analytic and uniformly stable in a certain sense.
The index bundle of the Overlap lattice Dirac operator over the orbit space of lattice gauge fields is introduced and studied. Obstructions to the vanishing of gauge anomalies in the Overlap formulation of lattice chiral gauge theory have a natural description in this context. Our main result is a formula for the topological charge (integrated Chern character) of the index bundle over even-dimensional spheres in the orbit space. It reduces under suitable conditions to the topological charge of the usual (continuum) index bundle in the classical continuum limit (this is announced and sketched h…
We study the behavior of solutions of the Helmholtz equation $(- Δ_{disc,h} - E)u_h = f_h$ on a periodic lattice as the mesh size $h$ tends to 0. Projecting to the eigenspace of a characteristic root $λ_h(ξ)$ and using a gauge transformation associated with the Dirac point, we show that the gauge transformed solution $u_h$ converges to that for the equation $(P(D_x) - E)v = g$ for a continuous model on ${\bf R}^d$, where $λ_h(ξ) \to P(ξ)$. For the case of the hexagonal and related lattices, {in a suitable energy region}, it converges to that for the Dirac equation. For the case of the square l…
We construct a new discrete analog of the Dirac-Kähler equation in which some key geometric aspects of the continuum counterpart are captured. We describe a discrete Dirac-Kähler equation in the intrinsic notation as a set of difference equations and prove several statements about its decomposition into difference equations of Duffin type. We study an analog of gauge transformations for the massless discrete Dirac-Kähler equations.
In this paper we compute the square root of the generalized squared total angular momentum operator $J$ for a Dirac particle in the Kerr-Newman metric. The separation constant $λ$ arising from the Chandrasekahr separation ansatz turns out to be the eigenvalue of $J$. After proving that $J$ is a symmetry operator, we show the completeness of Chandrasekhar Ansatz for the Dirac equation in oblate spheroidal coordinates and derive an explicit formula for the propagator $e^{-itH}$.
The causal action principle is analyzed for a system of relativistic fermions composed of massive Dirac particles and neutrinos. In the continuum limit, we obtain an effective interaction described by classical gravity as well as the strong and electroweak gauge fields of the standard model.
We use the framework of supersymmetric transformations in the construction of coupled systems of Dirac fermions. Its energy operator is a composite of the generators of the associated superalgebra, and the two coupled Dirac fermions acquire different Fermi velocities. We discuss in detail the peculiar spectral properties of the new system. The emergent phenomena like level crossing or generation of bound states in the continuum (BICs) are illustrated in two explicit examples.
In this paper the two-dimensional Dirac operator with a general hermitian $δ$-shell interaction supported on a straight line is introduced as a self-adjoint operator and its spectral properties are investigated in detail. In particular, it is demonstrated that the singularly continuous spectrum is always empty and that by switching a certain $δ$-shell interaction on, it is possible to generate an eigenvalue in the gap of the spectrum of the free operator or to partially or even fully close the gap. This suggests that the studied operators may serve as interesting continuum toy-models for Dirac…
We study the emergence of Dirac fermionic field in the low energy description of non-relativistic dynamical models on graphs admitting continuum limit. The Dirac fermionic field appears as the effective field describing the excitations above point-like Fermi surface. Together with the Dirac fermionic field an effective space-time metric is also emerging. We analyze the conditions for such Fermi points to appear in general, paying special attention to the cases of two and three spacial dimensions.
We examine the one dimensional Dirac equation with modulated or position dependent velocity. In particular, it is shown that using suitable velocity profiles it is possible to create bound state in continuum (BIC) like, as well as, discrete energy bound state solutions.
We analyze the causal action principle for a system of relativistic fermions composed of massive Dirac particles and neutrinos. In the continuum limit, we obtain an effective interaction described by a left-handed, massive SU(2) gauge field and a gravitational field. The off-diagonal gauge potentials involve a unitary mixing matrix, which is similar to the Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix in the standard model.
We prove the existence of exponentially accurate quasimodes using the square of the Dirac operator on the Schwarzschild-Anti-de Sitter spacetime and the Agmon estimates. We then deduce a logarithmic lower bound for the local energy decay of the Dirac propagator.
The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz describes quantum many-body states by a hierarchical entanglement structure organized by length scale. Numerically, it has been demonstrated to capture critical lattice models and the data of the corresponding conformal field theories with high accuracy. However, a rigorous understanding of its success and precise relation to the continuum is still lacking. To address this challenge, we provide an explicit construction of entanglement-renormalization quantum circuits that rigorously approximate correlation functions of the massless Dirac confo…
Given a vector bundle $A$ over a smooth manifold $M$ such that the square root $\mathcal{L}$ of the line bundle $\wedge^{\mathrm{top}}A^\ast \otimes \wedge^{\mathrm{top}}T^\ast M$ exists, the Clifford bundle associated to the split pseudo-Euclidean vector bundle $(E = A \oplus A^\ast, \langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle)$, admits a spinor bundle $\wedge^\bullet A \otimes \mathcal{L}$, whose section space can be thought of as that of Berezinian half-densities of the graded manifold $A^\ast[1]$. We give an explicit construction of Dirac generating operators of split Courant algebroid (or proto-bialgebr…
We considered an extension of the standard functional for the Einstein-Dirac equation where the Dirac operator is replaced by the square of the Dirac operator and a real parameter controlling the length of spinors is introduced. For one distinguished value of the parameter, the resulting Euler-Lagrange equations provide a new type of Einstein-Dirac coupling. We establish a special method for constructing global smooth solutions of a newly derived Einstein-Dirac system called the {\it CL-Einstein-Dirac equation of type II} (see Definition 3.1).
The ability of the Rigged Hilbert Space formalism to deal with continuous spectrum is demonstrated within the example of the square barrier potential. The non-square integrable solutions of the time-independent Schrodinger equation are used to define Dirac kets, which are (generalized) eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian. These Dirac kets are antilinear functionals over the space of physical wave functions. They are also basis vectors that expand any physical wave function in a Dirac basis vector expansion. It is shown that an acceptable physical wave function must fulfill stronger conditions than…
