We determine lithium (Li) abundances for solar twins in the M67 open cluster to add valuable information about the correlation between Li depletion and stellar age and, then, better understand stellar structure and evolution. We use high resolution and good signal-to-noise ratio spectra to characterize Li depletion in three solar twins from M67, using spectral synthesis in the region of the asymmetric 6707.75 Å\, Li I feature. The mean Li abundance value of A(Li)$=1.6\pm0.2$ dex for our sample of M67 solar twins (our three stars plus a fourth solar twin from a previous analysis in the literature) presents Li abundance expected for its age. Also, the scatter estimated from the standard deviation of the Li abundances in this work is similar to the typical scatter found in a sample of field solar twins presented in the literature.
Lithium and beryllium are destroyed at different temperatures in stellar interiors. As such, their relative abundances offer excellent probes of the nature and extent of mixing processes within and below the convection zone. We determine Be abundances for a sample of eight solar twins for which Li abundances have previously been determined. The analyzed solar twins span a very wide range of age, 0.5-8.2 Gyr, which enables us to study secular evolution of Li and Be depletion. We gathered high-quality UVES/VLT spectra and obtained Be abundances by spectral synthesis of the Be II 313 nm doublet. …
We present the first detailed chemical abundance analysis of the old 8.2 Gyr solar twin, HIP 102152. We derive differential abundances of 21 elements relative to the Sun with precisions as high as 0.004 dex ($\lesssim$1%), using ultra high-resolution (R = 110,000), high S/N UVES spectra obtained on the 8.2-m Very Large Telescope. Our determined metallicity of HIP 102152 is [Fe/H] = -0.013 $\pm$ 0.004. The atmospheric parameters of the star were determined to be 54 K cooler than the Sun, 0.09 dex lower in surface gravity, and a microturbulence identical to our derived solar value. Elemental abu…
We present 63 Solar analogues and twins for which high S/N archival data are available for the HARPS high resolution spectrograph at the ESO 3.6m telescope. We perform a differential analysis of these stellar spectra relative to the Solar spectrum, similar to previous work using ESO 2.2m/FEROS data, and expand our analysis by introducing a new method to test the temperature and metallicity calibration of Sun-like stars in the Geneva-Copenhagen-Survey (GCS). The HARPS data are significantly better than the FEROS data, with improvements in S/N, spectral resolution, and number of lines we can ana…
We want to determine the lithium abundances of solar twin stars as a function of stellar age to provide constraints for stellar evolutions models and to investigate whether there is a connection between low Li abundance and the occurrence of planets. For a sample of 21 solar twins observed with the HARPS spectrograph at high spectral resolution (R~115.000) and very high signal-to-noise ratio (600 < S/N < 2400), precise lithium abundances were obtained by spectral synthesis of the LiI 6707.8 A line and compared to stellar ages, masses, and metallicities determined from a spectroscopic analysis …
We determine the age and mass of the three best solar twin candidates in open cluster M67 through lithium evolutionary models. We computed a grid of evolutionary models with non-standard mixing at metallicity [Fe/H] = 0.01 with the Toulouse-Geneva evolution code for a range of stellar masses. We estimated the mass and age of 10 solar analogs belonging to the open cluster M67. We made a detailed study of the three solar twins of the sample, YPB637, YPB1194, and YPB1787. We obtained a very accurate estimation of the mass of our solar analogs in M67 by interpolating in the grid of evolutionary mo…
The question of whether the Sun is peculiar within the class of solar-type stars has been the subject of active investigation over the past three decades. Although several solar twins have been found with stellar parameters similar to those of the Sun (albeit in a range of Li abundances and with somewhat different compositions), their rotation periods are unknown, except for 18 Sco, which is younger than the Sun and with a rotation period shorter than solar. It is difficult to obtain rotation periods for stars of solar age from ground-based observations, as a low activity level imply a shallow…
Methods. We determine the atmospheric parameters and differential abundances using high-resolution ($R \approx 50 000$), high signal-to-noise (S/N $\approx$ 110 - 240 per pixel) Keck HIRES spectra for our solar twin candidate, the previously known solar twin HD 45184, and the Sun. Results. For the bright solar twin HD 45184, we found $T_{\rm{eff}} = 5864 \pm 9$ K, log $g = 4.45 \pm 0.03$ dex, $v_{t} = 1.11 \pm 0.02$ $\rm{km\ {s}}^{-1}$, and [Fe/H]$ = 0.04 \pm 0.01$ dex, which are in good agreement with previous works. The star Inti 1 has atmospheric parameters $T_{\rm{eff}} = 5837 \pm 11$ K, l…
The rich open cluster M67 is known to have a chemical composition close to solar, and an age around 4Gyr. It thus offers the opportunity to check our understanding of the physics and the evolution of solar-type stars in a cluster environment. We present the first spectroscopic study at high resolution, R~50,000, of the potentially best solar twin, M67-1194, identified among solar-like stars in M67. Based on a pre-selection of solar-twin candidates performed at medium resolution by Pasquini et al. (2008), we explore the chemical-abundance similarities and differences between M67-1194 and the Su…
We conducted a high-precision elemental abundance analysis of the twin-star comoving pair HIP34407/HIP34426. With mean error of 0.013 dex in the differential abundances (D[X/H]), a significant difference was found: HIP34407 is more metal-rich than HIP34426. The elemental abundance differences correlate strongly with condensation temperature, with the lowest for the volatile elements like carbon around 0.05+/-0.02 dex, and the highest up to about 0.22+/-0.01 dex for the most refractory elements like aluminum. Dissimilar chemical composition for stars in twin-star comoving pairs are not uncommon…
A large dataset of ~2800 spectra extracted from the ELODIE archive was analysed in order to find solar twins. A list of stellar spectra closely resembling the spectrum of the Sun was selected by applying a purely differential method, directly on the fluxes. As solar reference, 18 spectra of asteroids, Moon and blue sky were used. Atmospheric parameters and differential abundances of 8 chemical elements were determined for the solar twin candidates, after a careful selection of appropriate lines. The Li feature of the targets was investigated and additional information on absolute magnitude and…
A new sample of solar analogs and twin candidates have been constructed and studied, with particular attention to their light curves from NASA's Kepler mission. This letter aims to assess the evolutionary status, derive their rotation and ages and identify those solar analogs or solar twin candidates. We separate out the subgiants that compose a large fraction of the asteroseismic sample, and which show an increase in the average rotation period as the stars ascend the subgiant branch. The rotation periods of the dwarfs, ranging from 6 to 30 days, and averaged 19d, allow us to assess their ind…
Context. Many large stellar surveys have been and are still being carried out, providing huge amounts of data, for which stellar physical parameters will be derived. Solar twins and analogues provide a means to test the calibration of these stellar catalogues because the Sun is the best-studied star and provides precise fundamental parameters. Solar twins should be centred on the solar values. Aims. This spectroscopic study of solar analogues selected from the Geneva-Copenhagen Survey (GCS) at a resolution of 48,000 provides effective temperatures and metallicities for these stars. We test whe…
Recent studies of chemical abundances in metal-poor Halo stars show the existence of different populations, which is important for studies of Galaxy formation and evolution. Here we revisit the twin pair of chemically anomalous stars HD 134439 and HD 134440, using high resolution (R $\sim 72 000$) and high S/N ratio (S/N $\sim 250$) HDS/Subaru spectra. We compare them to the well-studied Halo star HD 103095, using the line-by-line differential technique to estimate precise stellar parameters and LTE chemical abundances. We present the abundances of C, O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, …
Solar twins and analogs are fundamental in the characterization of the Sun's place in the context of stellar measurements, as they are in understanding how typical the solar properties are in its neighborhood. They are also important for representing sunlight observable in the night sky for diverse photometric and spectroscopic tasks, besides being natural candidates for harboring planetary systems similar to ours and possibly even life-bearing environments. We report a photometric and spectroscopic survey of solar twin stars within 50 pc of the Sun. Hipparcos absolute magnitudes and (B-V)_Tyc…
We present the first observation, analysis and modeling of solar coronal twin jets, which occurred after a preceding jet. Detailed analysis on the kinetics of the preceding jet reveals its blowout-jet nature, which resembles the one studied in Liu et al. 2014. However the erupting process and kinetics of the twin jets appear to be different from the preceding one. In lack of the detailed information on the magnetic fields in the twin jet region, we instead use a numerical simulation using a three-dimensional (3D) MHD model as described in Fang et al. 2014, and find that in the simulation a pai…
We search for "solar twins" in the Geneva-Copenhagen Survey (GCS) using high resolution optical spectroscopy. We initially select Sun-like stars from the GCS by absolute magnitude, b-y colour and metallicity close to the solar values. Our aim is to find the stars which are spectroscopically very close to the Sun using line depth ratios and the median equivalent widths and depths of selected lines with a range of excitation potentials. We present the ten best stars fulfilling combined photometric and spectroscopic criteria, of which six are new twins. We use our full sample of Sun-like stars to…
Solar twins are stars with similar stellar (surface) parameters to the Sun that can have a wide range of ages. This provide an opportunity to analyze the variation of their chemical abundances with age. Nissen (2015) recently suggested that the abundances of the s-process element Y and the $α$-element Mg could be used to estimate stellar ages. This paper aims to determine with high precision the Y, Mg, and Fe abundances for a sample of 88 solar twins that span a broad age range ($0.3-10.0$\,Gyr) and investigate their use for estimating ages. We obtained high-quality Magellan Inamori Kyocera Ec…
Elemental abundance studies of solar twin stars suggest that the solar chemical composition contains signatures of the formation of terrestrial planets in the solar system, namely small but significant depletions of the refractory elements. To test this hypothesis, we study stars which, compared to solar twins, have less massive convective envelopes (therefore increasing the amplitude of the predicted effect) or are, arguably, more likely to host planets (thus increasing the frequency of signature detections). We measure relative atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances of a late-F type…
Implications of the recently discovered systematic abundance difference between the Sun and two collections of `solar twins' are discussed. The differences can be understood as an imprint on the abundances of the solar convection zone caused by the lock-up of heavy elements in the planets. Such a scenario also leads naturally to possible solutions of two other abundance peculiarities; 1) the discrepancy between photospheric abundances derived from accurate 3-D models of the solar photosphere and the abundance of heavy elements in the solar interior deduced from helioseismology, and 2) the abun…
Evolution of the 7Li abundance in the convection zone of the Sun during different stages of its life time is considered to explain its low photospheric value in comparison with that of the solar system meteorites. Lithium is intensively and transiently burned in the early stages of evolution (pre-main sequence, pMS) when the radiative core arises, and then the Li abundance only slowly decreases during the main sequence (MS). We study the rates of lithium burning during these two stages. In a model of the Sun, computed ignoring pMS and without extra-convective mixing (overshooting) at the base …
We analyze the non-standard mixing history of the solar twins HIP 55459, HIP 79672, HIP 56948, HIP 73815, and HIP 100963, to determine as precisely as possible their mass and age. We computed a grid of evolutionary models with non-standard mixing at several metallicities with the Toulouse-Geneva code for a range of stellar masses assuming an error bar of +-50K in Teff. We choose the evolutionary model that reproduces accurately the observed low lithium abundances observed in the solar twins. Our best-fit model for each solar twin provides a mass and age solution constrained by their Li content…
Solar twins are key in different areas of astrophysics, however only just over a hundred were identified and well-studied in the last two decades. In this work, we take advantage of the very precise \textit{Gaia} (DR2/EDR3), Tycho and 2MASS photometric systems to create the Inti survey of new solar twins in the Northern Hemisphere. The spectra of our targets were initially obtained with spectrographs of moderate resolution (ARCES and Goodman spectrographs with $R$ = 31500 and 11930, respectively) to find the best solar twin candidates and then observed at McDonald Observatory with higher resol…
It is still unclear how common the Sun is when compared to other similar stars in regards to some of its physical properties, such as rotation. Considering that gyrochronology relations are widely used today to estimate ages of stars in the main sequence, and that the Sun is used to calibrate it, it is crucial to assess if these procedures are acceptable. We analyze the rotational velocities -- limited by the unknown rotation axis inclination angle -- of an unprecedented large sample of solar twins in order to study the rotational evolution of Sun-like stars, and assess if the Sun is a typical…
Solar twins are objects of great interest in that they allow us to understand better how stellar evolution and structure are affected by variations of the stellar mass, age and chemical composition in the vicinity of the commonly accepted solar values. We aim to use the existing spectrophotometric, interferometric and asteroseismic data for the solar twin 18 Sco to constrain stellar evolution models. 18 Sco is the brightest solar twin and is a good benchmark for the study of solar twins. The goal is to obtain realistic estimates of its physical characteristics (mass, age, initial chemical comp…
We are carrying out a search for planets around a sample of solar twin stars using the HARPS spectrograph. The goal of this project is to exploit the advantage offered by solar twins to obtain chemical abundances of unmatched precision. This survey will enable new studies of the stellar composition -- planet connection. Here we used the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan Clay Telescope to acquire high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of our sample stars. We measured the equivalent widths of iron lines and used strict differential excitation/ionization balance analysis to determine…
The stellar Rotation $vs.$ Age relation is commonly considered as a useful tool to derive reliable ages for Sun-like stars. However, in the light of \kepler\ data, the presence of apparently old and fast rotators that do not obey the usual gyrochronology relations led to the hypothesis of weakened magnetic breaking in some stars. In this letter, we constrain the solar rotation evolutionary track using solar twins. Predicted rotational periods as a function of mass, age, [Fe/H] and given critical Rossby number ($Ro_{\rm crit}$) were estimated for the entire rotational sample. Our analysis favor…
It has been recently suggested that large solar energetic particle (SEP) events are often caused by twin CMEs. In the twin-CME scenario, the preceding CME is to provide both an enhanced turbulence level and enhanced seed population at the main CME-driven shock. In this work, we study the effect of the preceding CMEs on the seed population. We examine event-integrated abundance of iron to oxygen ratio (Fe/O) at energies above 25 MeV/nuc for large SEP events in solar cycle 23. We find that the Fe/O ratio (normalized to the reference coronal value of $0.134$) $\leq2.0$ for almost all single-CME e…
Solar colors have been determined on the uvby-$β$ photometric system to test absolute solar fluxes, to examine colors predicted by model atmospheres as a function of stellar parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]), and to probe zero-points of Teff and metallicity scales. New uvby-$β$ photometry is presented for 73 solar-twin candidates. Most stars of our sample have also been observed spectroscopically to obtain accurate stellar parameters. Using the stars that most closely resemble the Sun, and complementing our data with photometry available in the literature, the solar colors on the uvby-$β$ syste…
Solar twins have been a focus of attention for more than a decade, because their structure is extremely close to that of the Sun. Today, thanks to high-precision spectrometers, it is possible to use asteroseismology to probe their interiors. Our goal is to use time series obtained from the HARPS spectrometer to extract the oscillation frequencies of 18 Sco, the brightest solar twin. We used the tools of spectral analysis to estimate these quantities. We estimate 52 frequencies using an MCMC algorithm. After examination of their probability densities and comparison with results from direct MAP …
Stars in open clusters are expected to share an identical abundance pattern. Establishing the level of chemical homogeneity in a given open cluster deserves further study as it is the basis of the concept of chemical tagging to unravel the history of the Milky Way. M67 is particularly interesting given its solar metallicity and age as well as being a dense cluster environment. We conducted a strictly line-by-line differential chemical abundance analysis of two solar twins in M67: M67-1194 and M67-1315. Stellar atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances were obtained with high precision us…
Results of a detailed abundance analysis of the solar twins 16 Cyg A and 16 Cyg B based on high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio echelle spectroscopy are presented. 16 Cyg B is known to host a giant planet while no planets have yet been detected around 16 Cyg A. Stellar parameters are derived directly from our high-quality spectra, and the stars are found to be physically similar, with Delta_T_eff = +43 K, Delta_logg = -0.02 dex, and Delta_xi = +0.10 km/s (in the sense of A - B), consistent with previous findings. Abundances of 15 elements are derived and are found to be indistinguishabl…
Different stellar phenomena affect radial velocities (RVs), causing variations large enough to make it difficult to identify planet signals from the stellar variability. RV variations caused by stellar oscillations and granulation can be reduced through some methods, but the impact of rotationally modulated magnetic activity on RV, due to stellar active regions is harder to correct. New instrumentation promises an improvement in precision of one order of magnitude, from about 1 m/s, to about 10 cm/s. In this context, we report our first results from 24 spectroscopic ESPRESSO/VLT observations o…
An intensive spectroscopic study was performed for three representative solar twins (HIP 56948, HIP 79672, and HIP 100963) as well as for the Sun (Moon; reference standard), with an intention of (1) quantitatively discussing the relative-to-Sun similarities based on the precisely established differential parameters and (2) investigating the reason causing the Li abundance differences despite their similarities. It was concluded that HIP 56948 most resembles the Sun in every respect including the Li abundance (though not perfectly similar) among the three and deserves the name of "closest-ever …

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan(日本国立天文台);Université Côte d’Azur, Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, CNRS, Laboratoire Lagrange(蔚蓝海岸大学,蔚蓝海岸天文台,法国国家科学研究中心,拉格朗日实验室);Department of Physics, Tokyo Metropolitan University(东京都立大学物理系)
The activity levels of the solar-twin candidates HD 101364 and HD 197027 are measured and compared with the Sun, the known solar twin 18 Sco, and the solar-like star 51 Peg. Furthermore, the absolute ages of these five objects are estimated from their positions in the HR diagram and the evolutionary (relative) age compared with their activity levels. To represent the activity level of these stars, the Mount Wilson S-indices were used. To obtain consistent ages and evolutionary advance on the main sequence, we used evolutionary tracks calculated with the Cambridge Stellar Evolution Code. From o…
Several abundance analyses of Galactic open clusters (OCs) have shown a tendency for Ba but not for other heavy elements (La$-$Sm) to increase sharply with decreasing age such that Ba was claimed to reach [Ba/Fe] $\simeq +0.6$ in the youngest clusters (ages $<$ 100 Myr) rising from [Ba/Fe]$=0.00$ dex in solar-age clusters. Within the formulation of the $s$-process, the difficulty to replicate higher Ba abundance and normal La$-$Sm abundances in young clusters is known as {\it the barium puzzle}. Here, we investigate the barium puzzle using extremely high-resolution and high signal-to-noise spe…
Galactic chemical evolution (GCE), solar analogues or twins, and peculiarities of the solar composition with respect to the twins are inextricably related. We examine GCE parameters from the literature and present newly derived values using a quadratic fit that gives zero for a Solar age (i.e., 4.6 Gyr). We show how the GCE parameters may be used not only to "correct" abundances to the solar age, but to predict relative elemental abundances as a function of age. We address the question of whether the solar abundances are depleted in refractories and enhanced in volatiles and find that the answ…
Solar analogues are fundamental targets for a better understanding of our Sun and our Solar System. Usually, this research is limited to field stars, which offer several advantages and limitations. In this work, we present the results of a research of solar twins performed for the first time in a open cluster, namely M67. Our analysis allowed us to find five solar twins and also to derive a solar colour of (B-V)0=0.649+/-0.016 and a cluster distance modulus of 9.63+/-0.08. This study encourages us to apply the same method to other open clusters, and to do further investigations for planet sear…
Solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) waves are spectacular propagating disturbances with EUV enhancements in annular shapes in the solar corona. These EUV waves carry critical information about the coronal magnetised plasma that can shed light on the elusive physical parameters (e.g. the magnetic field strength) by global solar coronal magneto-seismology. EUV waves are closely associated with a wide range of solar atmospheric eruptions, from violent flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) to less energetic plasma jets or mini-filament eruptions. However, the physical nature and driving mechanism o…
The Survey for Distant Solar Twins (SDST) aims to find stars very similar to the Sun at distances 1-4 kpc, several times more distant than any currently known solar twins and analogues. The goal is to identify the best stars with which to test whether the fine-structure constant, alpha, varies with dark matter density in our Galaxy. Here we use EPIC, our line-by-line differential technique, to measure the stellar parameters - effective temperature Teff, surface gravity log g, metallicity [Fe/H] - from moderate resolution (R < 32,000) spectra of 877 solar twin and analogue candidates (547 at 1-…
[Context]. The standard solar model fails to predict the very low lithium abundance in the Sun, which is much lower than the proto-solar nebula. This Li problem has been debated for decades, and it has been ascribed either to planet formation or to secular stellar depletion. In order to test the evolution of Li, it is important to find solar twins in a range of ages. Also, the study of stars similar to the Sun is relevant in relation to the signature of terrestrial planet formation around the Sun. [Methods]. We acquired high-resolution (R=110,000), high S/N (~300) ESO/VLT UVES spectra of sever…
Methods. We used the HIRES spectrograph on the Keck I telescope to acquire high-resolution (R $\approx$ 70000) spectra with a high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N $\approx$ 400 - 650 per pixel) of HIP 100963 and the Sun for a differential abundance analysis. We measured the equivalent widths (EWs) of iron lines to determine the stellar parameters by employing the differential spectroscopic equilibrium. We determined the composition of volatile, refractory, and neutron-capture elements through a differential abundance analysis with respect to the Sun. Results. The stellar parameters we found are $T_…
The relative chemical abundances between CI meteorites and the solar photosphere exhibit a significant trend with condensation temperature. A trend with condensation temperature is also seen when the solar photospheric abundances are compared to those of nearby solar twins. We use both these trends to determine the alteration of the elemental abundances of the meteorties and the photosphere by fractionation and calculate a new set of primordial Solar System abundances.
Solar twins are stars of key importance to the field of astronomy and offer a multitude of science applications. Only a small number ($\lesssim200$) of solar twins are known today, all of which are relatively close to our Sun ($\lesssim800\,pc$). The goal of our Survey for Distant Solar Twins (SDST) is to identify many more solar twin and solar analogue stars out to much larger distances ($\sim4\,kpc$). In this paper, we present a new method to identify solar twins using relatively low $S/N$, medium resolving power ($R\sim 28{,}000$) spectra that will be typical of such distant targets observe…
In the course of a project to study eclipsing binary stars in vinicity of the Sun, we found that the cooler component of LL Aqr is a solar twin candidate. This is the first known star with properties of a solar twin existing in a non-interacting eclipsing binary, offering an excellent opportunity to fully characterise its physical properties with very high precision. We used extensive multi-band, archival photometry and the Super-WASP project and high-resolution spectroscopy obtained from the HARPS and CORALIE spectrographs. The spectra of both components were decomposed and a detailed LTE abu…
The growing interest in solar twins is motivated by the possibility of comparing them directly to the Sun. To carry on this kind of analysis, we need to know their physical characteristics with precision. Our first objective is to use asteroseismology and interferometry on the brightest of them: 18 Sco. We observed the star during 12 nights with HARPS for seismology and used the PAVO beam-combiner at CHARA for interferometry. An average large frequency separation $134.4\pm0.3$ $μ$Hz and angular and linear radiuses of $0.6759 \pm 0.0062$ mas and $1.010\pm0.009$ R$_{\odot}$ were estimated. We us…
The abundance patterns observed in the Sun and in metal-poor stars show a clear odd-even effect. An important question is whether the odd-even effect in solar-metallicity stars is similar to the Sun, or if there are variations that can tell us about different chemical enrichment histories. In this work, we report for the first time observational evidence of a differential odd-even effect in the solar twin HIP 11915, relative to the solar odd-even abundance pattern. The spectra of this star were obtained with high resolving power (140 000) and signal-to-noise ratio ($\sim$420) using the ESPRESS…

The solar chemical abundances studied in considerable detail because of discrepant values of solar metallicity inferred from different indicators, where in the present work we have used 28 suitable atomic spectral solar nitrogen lines, relying on new equivalent widths measurements for determining the nitrogen abundance. Corresponding to 28 solar neutral nitrogen lines, we derived a solar abundance of nitrogen using the Holweger and Muller solar model and the measured equivalent widths from the literature. Our study reported the solar nitrogen abundance result to be of 8.05 (sigma = 0.09) using…
Studies of solar twins have key impacts on the astronomical community, but only $\sim$100--200 nearby solar twins ($<$ 1 kpc) have been reliably identified over the last few decades. The aim of our survey (SDST) is to identify $\sim$150--200 distant solar twins and analogues (up to $\lesssim$ 4 kpc) closer to the Galactic Centre. We took advantage of the precise Gaia and Skymapper surveys to select Sun-like candidates in a 2-degree field, which were observed with the HERMES spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We successfully built up the required signal-to-noise ratio (25-per-pixel…
CONTEXT: In recent years, the solar chemical abundances have been studied in considerable detail because of discrepant values of solar metallicity inferred from different indicators, i.e., on the one hand, the "sub-solar" photospheric abundances resulting from spectroscopic chemical composition analyses with the aid of 3D hydrodynamical models of the solar atmosphere, and, on the other hand, the high metallicity inferred by helioseismology. AIMS: After investigating the solar oxygen abundance using a CO5BOLD 3D hydrodynamical solar model in previous work, we undertake a similar approach studyi…
Spectroscopic equilibrium allows us to obtain precise stellar parameters in Sun-like stars. It relies on the assumption of the iron excitation and ionization equilibrium. However, several works suggest that magnetic activity may affect chemical abundances of young active stars, calling into question the validity of this widely-used method. We have tested for the first time variations in stellar parameters and chemical abundances for the young solar twin HIP 36515 ($\sim$0.4 Gyr), along its activity cycle. This star has stellar parameters very well established in the literature and we estimated…
We analyze various tracers of magnetic activity for 23 solar twins which are characterized by significant scatter of lithium abundance in their atmospheres. A level of coronal and chromospheric activity has been studied from available X-ray and UV-archival data. It gives us a chance to compare coronae of solar twins of various ages with the solar case. We found a scatter in the X-ray to bolometric luminosity ratio $L_X/L_{bol}$ by several orders of magnitude, which exists in these stars along with a significant spread in Li abundance. This may link the surface activity of stars with phenomena …
The present work aims to examine in detail the depletion of lithium in solar twins to better constrain stellar evolution models and investigate its possible connection with exoplanets. We employ spectral synthesis in the region of the asymmetric 6707.75 ÅLi I line for a sample of 77 stars plus the Sun. As in previous works based on a smaller sample of solar twins, we find a strong correlation between Li depletion and stellar age. In addition, for the first time we show that the Sun has the lowest Li abundance in comparison with solar twins at similar age (4.6 $\pm$ 0.5 Gyr). We compare the lit…
We discuss the level of agreement of a new generation of standard solar models (SSMs), Barcelona 2016 or B16 for short, with helioseismic and solar neutrino data, confirming that models implementing the AGSS09met surface abundances, based on refined three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of the solar atmosphere, do not not reproduce helioseismic constraints. We clarify that this solar abundance problem can be equally solved by a change of the composition and/or of the opacity of the solar plasma, since effects produced by variations of metal abundances are equivalent to those produced by…
This is a study of abundances of the elements He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe in solar energetic particles (SEPs) in the 2 - 15 MeV amu-1 region measured on the Wind spacecraft during 54 large SEP events occurring between November 1994 and June 2012. The origin of most of the temporal and spatial variations in abundances of the heavier elements lies in rigidity-dependent scattering during transport of the particles away from the site of acceleration at shock waves driven out from the Sun by coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Variation in the abundance of Fe is correlated with the Fe spe…
The solar abundances have undergone a major downward revision in the last decade, reputedly as a result of employing 3D hydrodynamical simulations to model the inhomogeneous structure of the solar photosphere. The very low oxygen abundance advocated by Asplund et al. (2004), A(O)=8.66, together with the downward revision of the carbon and nitrogen abundances, has created serious problems for solar models to explain the helioseismic measurements. In an effort to contribute to the dispute we have re-derived photospheric abundances of several elements independently of previous analysis. We applie…
We study the solar photospheric abundance of singly ionized neodymium (Nd II) using high resolution spectroscopic data obtained by Fourier transform spectrograph (FTS). Based on the Local Thermodynamical Equilibrium (LTE) assumption, a new value of Nd abundance is derived. We succeed to select of 51 solar Nd II lines with accurate transition probabilities measured experimentally by Den Hartog et al. (2003) and with accurate damping parameters are determined from literature. Relying on atomic data of Opacity Distribution Function (ODF), we construct theoretical photospheric solar model. The mea…
