Using the tight-binding BHZ model and Landauer-Büttiker formalism, the topological invariant of the finite width of ribbons of HgTe/CdTe quantum well is studied in the absence and presence of an external transverse electric field. It will be recognized that a critical current changes topological invariant of ribbons of quantum well. This topological phase transition, which occurred by adjustment of the bias voltage, depends on the width of the sample and the gate voltage. The profound effects of an external transverse electric field are considered to the separation of spin-up and spin-down band structures, decreasing band gap and tuning the topological phase transition between ordinary and quantum spin Hall regime. These declares the transverse electric field amplifies the quantum spin Hall regime and causes inducing the topological phase transition in ribbons of quantum well. Our finding may instantly clear some practical aspects of the study in the field of spintronic for employment in spin-based devices.
We study theoretically and experimentally the spin pumping signals induced by the resonance of canted antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and demonstrate that they can generate easily observable inverse spin-Hall voltages. Using a bilayer of hematite/heavy metal as a model system, we measure at room temperature the antiferromagnetic resonance and an associated inverse spin-Hall voltage, as large as in collinear antiferromagnets. As expected for coherent spin-pumping, we observe that the sign of the inverse spin-Hall voltage provides direct information about the mode handedn…

Any departure from graphene's flatness leads to the emergence of artificial gauge fields that act on the motion of the Dirac fermions through an associated pseudomagnetic field. Here, we demonstrate the tunability of strong gauge fields in non-local experiments using a large planar graphene sheet that conforms to the deformation of a piezoelectric layer by a surface acoustic wave. The acoustic wave induces a longitudinal and a giant synthetic Hall voltage in the absence of external magnetic fields. The superposition of a synthetic Hall potential and a conventional Hall voltage can annihilate t…
We compare thermal-gradient-driven transverse voltages in ferrimagnetic-insulator/heavy-metal bilayers (Tm3Fe5O12/W and Tm3Fe5O12/Pt) to corresponding electrically-driven transverse resistances at and above room temperature. We find for Tm3Fe5O12/W that the thermal and electrical effects can be explained by a common spin-current detection mechanism, the physics underlying spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). However, for Tm3Fe5O12/Pt the ratio of the electrically-driven transverse voltages (planar Hall signal/anomalous Hall signal) is much larger than the ratio of corresponding thermal-gradient …
It is commonly believed that the current response of an electron fluid to a mechanical force (such as an electric field) or to a ``statistical force" (e.g., a gradient of chemical potential) are governed by a single linear transport coefficient - the electric conductivity. We argue that this is not the case in anomalous Hall materials. In particular, we find that transverse (Hall) currents manifest two distinct Hall responses governed by an unconventional {\it transverse} Einstein relation that captures an anomalous relation between the Hall conductivity and the Hall diffusion constant. We giv…
"Wormhole" geometry for entrapping topologically-protected qubits in non-Abelian quantum Hall states and probing them with voltage and noise measurements
Magnetic skyrmions can be driven by an applied spin-polarized electron current which exerts a spin-transfer torque on the localized spins constituting the skyrmion. However, the longitudinal dynamics is plagued by the skyrmion Hall effect which causes the skyrmions to acquire a transverse velocity component. We show how to use spin-orbit interaction to control the skyrmion Hall angle and how the interplay of spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques can lead to a complete suppression of the transverse motion. Since the spin-orbit torques can be controlled all-electronically by a gate voltage, the s…
Harmonic Hall voltage measurements are a wide-spread quantitative technique for the measurement of spin-orbit induced effective fields in heavy-metal / ferromagnet heterostructures. In the vicinity of the voltage pickup lines in the Hall bar, the current is inhomogeneous, which leads to a hitherto not quantified reduction of the effective fields and derived quantities, such as the spin Hall angle or the spin Hall conductivity. Here we present a thorough analysis of the influence of the aspect ratio of the voltage pickup lines to current channel widths on the apparent spin Hall angle. Experimen…
There exists considerable confusion in estimating the spin diffusion length of materials with high spin-orbit coupling from spin pumping experiments. For designing functional devices, it is important to determine the spin diffusion length with sufficient accuracy from experimental results. An inaccurate estimation of spin diffusion length also affects the estimation of other parameters (e.g., spin mixing conductance, spin Hall angle) concomitantly. The spin diffusion length for platinum (Pt) has been reported in literature in a wide range of 0.5 - 14 nm, and particularly it is a constant value…
Quantum coherence and its dephasing in the giant spin Hall effect and nonlocal voltage generated by magnetotransport through multiterminal graphene bars
Anomalous Hall-like signals in platinum in contact with magnetic insulators are common observations that could be explained by either proximity magnetization or spin Hall magnetoresistance. In this work, longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances are measured in a pure gold thin film on the ferrimagnetic insulator Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (Yttrium Iron Garnet, YIG). We show that both the longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances have quantitatively consistent scaling in YIG/Au and in a YIG/Pt reference system when applying the Spin Hall magnetoresistance framework. No contribution of an an…
We have investigated the spatial distribution of the electron temperature generated in a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field. We measure thermoelectric voltages between Ohmic contacts located at the end of the voltage-probe arms of a Hall bar fabricated from a GaAs/AlGaAs 2DES wafer, immersed in the mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator held at 20 mK. Magneto-oscillations due to the Landau quantization are examined for the thermoelectric voltages between the contact pairs straddling the main bar (arrangement to measure the transverse component…
The electrical detection of spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (st-FMR) is becoming a popular method for measuring the spin-Hall angle of heavy metals (HM). However, various sensible analysis on the same material with either the same or different experimental setups yielded different spin-Hall angles with large discrepancy, indicating some missing ingredients in our current understanding of st-FMR. Here we carry out a careful analysis of electrical signals of the st-FMR in a HM/ferromagnet (HM/FM) bilayer with an arbitrary magnetic anisotropy. The FM magnetization is driven by two radio-frequ…
The orientation of the tilted magnetic anisotropy has crucial importance in many spintronic devices. However, it is very challenging to determine it especially in very small structures produced by lithography. Here, we propose a new experimental method to directly and accurately measure both the polar and azimuthal angles of a tilted magnetic anisotropy. By using the proposed experimental method, we have successfully determined the out-of-plane and in-plane angles of the tilted magnetic anisotropy in a micro-structured multilayer thin film. The orientation of the tilted magnetic anisotropy in …

We use magnetotransport in dual-gated magnetic topological insulator heterostructures to map out a phase diagram of the topological Hall and quantum anomalous Hall effects as a function of the chemical potential (primarily determined by the back gate voltage) and the asymmetric potential (primarily determined by the top gate voltage). A theoretical model that includes both surface states and valence band quantum well states allows the evaluation of the variation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and carrier density with gate voltages. The qualitative agreement between experiment and the…
Evidence of orbital Hall current induced correlation in second harmonic response of longitudinal and transverse voltage in light metal-ferromagnet bilayers
In this paper we present a method to numerically study transverse Hall conductances using a two-terminal setup. Using nonlinear transport concepts we find that the Hall voltage dependence on the model parameters can be investigated from the difference between the injectivities from each terminal. The method is suitable to work with non-equilibrium Green's functions as well as for scattering matrix approaches. We illustrate the proposed idea by studying the quantum spin Hall effect in graphene with disordered spin-orbit scattering centers induced by adatoms. We use two distinct models, a finite…
The electromotive forces induced by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are investigated in ferromagnetic thin films. CoFeB thin films deposited on LiNbO$_3$ substrates are patterned into Hall-bars to study the acoustoelectric transport properties of the device. The longitudinal and transverse dc voltages that develop in the Hall bars, which are parallel and orthogonal to the flow of the SAW, respectively, are measured under application of an in-plane magnetic field. The longitudinal voltage scales linearly with the SAW power and reverses its polarity upon changing the direction to which the SAW pro…
The breaking of parity and time-reversal symmetry in two-dimensional Fermi liquids gives rise to non-dissipative transport features characterized by the Hall viscosity. In magnetic fields, the Hall viscous force directly competes with the Lorentz force, since both mechanisms contribute to the Hall voltage. In this work, we present a channel geometry that allows us to uniquely distinguish these two contributions and derive, for the first time, their functional dependency on all external parameters. We show that the ratio of the Hall viscous to the Lorentz force contribution is negative and that…
Accurate measurement of the electric current requires a stable and calculable resistor for an ideal current to voltage conversion. However, the temporal resistance drift of a physical resistor is unavoidable, unlike the quantum Hall resistance directly linked to the Planck constant h and the elementary charge e. Lack of an invariant high resistance leads to a challenge in making small current measurements below 1 muA with an uncertainty better than one part in 106. In this work, we demonstrate a current to voltage conversion in the range from a few nano amps to one microamp with an invariant q…
We study the transport properties of a voltage-biased Josephson junction where the BCS superconducting leads are coupled via the edges of a quantum Hall sample. In this scenario, an out of equilibrium Josephson current develops, which is numerically studied within the Floquet-Keldysh Green's function formalism. We particularly focus on the time-averaged current as a function of both the bias voltage and the magnetic flux threading the sample and analyze the resonant multiple Andreev reflection processes that lead to an enhancement of the quasiparticle transmission. We find that a full tomograp…
