Quantum spin Hall insulators, recently realized in HgTe/(Hg,Cd)Te quantum wells, support topologically protected, linearly dispersing edge states with spin-momentum locking. A local magnetic exchange field can open a gap for the edge states. A quantum-dot structure consisting of two such magnetic tunneling barriers is proposed and the charge transport through this device is analyzed. The effects of a finite bias voltage beyond linear response, of a gate voltage, and of the charging energy in the quantum dot are studied within a combination of Green-function and master-equation approaches. Among other results, a partial recurrence of non-interacting behavior is found for strong interactions, and the possibility of controlling the edge magnetization by a locally applied gate voltage is proposed.
We study quantum Hall interferometers in which the interference loop encircles a quantum anti-dot. We base our study on thermodynamic considerations, which we believe reflect the essential aspects of interference transport phenomena. We find that similar to the more conventional Fabry-Perot quantum Hall interferometers, in which the interference loop forms a quantum dot, the anti-dot interferometer is affected by the electro-static Coulomb interaction between the edge modes defining the loop. We show that in the Aharonov-Bohm regime, in which effects of fractional statistics should be visible,…
We report on the observation of periodic conductance oscillations near quantum Hall plateaus in suspended graphene nanoribbons. They are attributed to single quantum dots that form in the narrowest part of the ribbon, in the valleys and hills of a disorder potential. In a wide flake with two gates, a double-dot system's signature has been observed. Electrostatic confinement is enabled in single-layer graphene due to the gaps that form between Landau levels, suggesting a way to create gate-defined quantum dots that can be accessed with quantum Hall edge states.
We demonstrate a new method for locally probing the edge states in the quantum Hall regime utilizing a side coupled quantum dot positioned at an edge of a Hall bar. By measuring the tunneling of electrons from the edge states into the dot, we acquire information on the local electrochemical potential and electron temperature of the edge states. Furthermore, this method allows us to observe the spatial modulation of the electrostatic potential at the edge state due to many-body screening effect.
Quantum dots in the fractional quantum Hall regime are studied using a Hartree formulation of composite fermion theory. Under appropriate conditions the chemical potential of the dots will oscillate periodically with B due to the transfer of composite fermions between quasi-Landau bands. This effect is analogous to the addition spectrum oscillations which occur in quantum dots in the integer quantum Hall regime. Period phi_0 oscillations are found in sharply confined dots with filling factors nu=2/5 and nu=2/3. Period 3*phi_0 oscillations are found in a parabolically confined nu=2/5 dot. More …
We study the spin ordering of a quantum dot defined via magnetic barriers in an interacting quantum spin Hall edge. The spin-resolved density-density correlation functions are computed. We show that strong electron interactions induce a ground state with a highly correlated spin pattern. The crossover from the liquid-type correlations at weak interactions to the ground state spin texture found at strong interactions parallels the formation of a one-dimensional Wigner molecule in an ordinary strongly interacting quantum dot.
We present measurements of transport through two tunnel-coupled quantum dots of different sizes connected in series in a strong, variable, perpendicular magnetic field. Double dot conductance was measured both as a function of magnetic field, which was varied across the filling factor nu = 4 quantum Hall plateau, and as a function of charge induced evenly on the two dots. The conductance peaks undergo position shifts and height modulations as the magnetic field is varied. These shifts and modulations form a pattern that repeats over large ranges of magnetic field and with the addition of doubl…
We consider the dephasing rate of an electron level in a quantum dot, placed next to a fluctuating edge current in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Using perturbation theory, we show that this rate has an anomalous dependence on the bias voltage applied to the neighboring quantum point contact, which originates from the Luttinger liquid physics which describes the Hall fluid. General expressions are obtained using a screened Coulomb interaction. The dephasing rate is strictly proportional to the zero frequency backscattering current noise, which allows to describe exactly the weak to strong…
We present a theory and Coulomb and Spin Blockade spectroscopy experiments on quantum Hall droplets with controlled electron numbers (N1,N2) in laterally coupled gated quantum dots. The theory is based on the configuration interaction method (CI) coupled with the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (URHF) basis. It allows us to calculate the magnetic field evolution of ground and excited states of coupled quantum dots with large electron numbers. The method is applied to the spin transitions in the (5,5) droplet. Preliminary experimental results demonstrate the creation of the (5,5) droplet and its Spin…
Quantum dots in the quantum Hall regime can have pairs of single Slater determinant states that are degenerate in energy. We argue that these pairs of many body states may give rise to a Kondo effect which can be mapped into an ordinary Kondo effect in a fictitious magnetic field. We report on several properties of this Kondo effect using scaling and numerical renormalization group analysis. We suggest an experiment to investigate this Kondo effect.
We study the transport mechanisms taking place in a quantum spin Hall bar with an embedded quantum dot, where electrons localize and experience Coulomb interaction U as well as spin-flip processes λ. We solve the problem with non-equilibrium Green functions. We focus on the linear response regime and treat the many-body interactions with quantum Monte Carlo. The effects of U and λ are competitive and the induced transport takes place through different channels. The two mechanisms can be switched by changing the occupation of the dot with a gate voltage.
We present a calculation for the second moment of the local density of states in a model of a two-dimensional quantum dot array near the quantum Hall transition. The quantum dot array model is a realistic adaptation of the lattice model for the quantum Hall transition in the two-dimensional electron gas in an external magnetic field proposed by Ludwig, Fisher, Shankar and Grinstein. We make use of a Dirac fermion representation for the Green functions in the presence of fluctuations for the quantum dot energy levels. A saddle-point approximation yields non-perturbative results for the first an…
We present complete analytical and numerical results that demonstrate the anomalous universal fluctuations of the spin-Hall conductance in chiral materials such as graphene and topological insulators. We investigated both the corresponding fluctuations, the Universal Fractionated and the Universal Quantized, and also the open channels orbital number crossover between the two regimes. In particular, we show that the Wigner-Dyson symmetries does not properly describe such conductances and the preponderant role of the chiral classes on the Dirac quantum dots. The results are analytical and solve …
The fluctuations in the spacing of the tunneling resonances through a quantum dot have been studied in the quantum Hall regime. Using the fact that the ground-state of the system is described very well by the Laughlin wavefunction, we were able to determine accurately, via classical Monte Carlo calculations, the amplitude and distribution of the peak-spacing fluctuations. Our results clearly demonstrate a big enhancement of the fluctuations as the importance of the electronic correlations increases, namely as the density decreases and filling factor becomes smaller. We also find that the distr…
In this work, we present the analytical solution of the effective mass Pauli equation, with Rashba and linear Dresselhaus interactions, for an electron gas moving through a semiconductor quantum dot under a longitudinal electric field, which is defined along the $x$-direction. We study the relative influence of the Rashba and Dresselhaus terms on the spin-Hall effect for the first propagating and edge channels, by analyzing the mixing between spin-up and -down states and the zero-field spin splitting along the transverse directions. When the spin rotation depends only on the $y$-coordinate, th…
Resonant tunneling through a quantum dot weakly coupled to Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids is discussed. The linear conductance due to sequential tunneling is calculated by solving a master equation for temperatures below and above the average level spacing in the dot. When the parameter g characterizing the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid is smaller than 1/2, the resonant tunneling process is incoherent down to zero temperature. At low temperature T the height and width of the conductance peaks in the Coulomb blockade oscillations are proportional to T^{(1/g)-2} and T, respectively. The contribution fro…
The quantization of Hall conductance in a p-type heterojunction with lateral surface quantum dot superlattice is investigated. The topological properties of the four-component hole wavefunction are studied both in r- and k-spaces. New method of calculation of the Hall conductance in a 2D hole gas described by the Luttinger Hamiltonian and affected by lateral periodic potential is proposed, based on the investigation of four-component wavefunction singularities in k-space. The deviations from the quantization rules for Hofstadter "butterfly" for electrons are found, and the explanation of this …
Magnetoresistance measurements have been performed on a gated two-dimensional electron system (2DES) separated by a thin barrier layer from a layer of InAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs). Clear features of the quantum Hall effect were observed despite the proximity of the QDs layer to the 2DES. However, the magnetoresistance ($ρ_{xx}$) and Hall resistance ($ρ_{xy}$) are suppressed significantly in the magnetic field range of filling factor $ν<1$ when a positive voltage is applied to the front gate. The influence of the charge state in QDs was observed on the transport properties of the near…
We demonstrate the existance of ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic phases in a spin phase diagram of coupled lateral quantum dot molecules in the quantum Hall regime. The spin phase diagram is determined from Hartree-Fock Configuration Interaction method as a function of electron numbers N, magnetic field B, Zeeman energy, and tunneling barrier height. The quantum Hall ferrimagnetic phase corresponds to spatially imbalanced spin droplets resulting from strong inter-dot coupling of identical dots. The quantum Hall ferromagnetic phases correspond to ferromagnetic coupling of spin polarization at fi…
In this work, a quantum dot that is defined asymmetrically by electrostatic means induced on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure is investigated to unravel the effect of geometric constrains on the formation of spin droplets under quantised Hall conditions. The incompressibility of exciting nu = 5/2 state is explored by solving the Schrodinger equation within spin density functional theory, where the confinement potential is obtained self-consistently utilising the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Our numerical investigations show that the spatial distribution of the nu = 2 incompressible strips and elec…

We present an advanced lateral triple quantum dot made by local anodic oxidation. Three dots are coupled in a starlike geometry with one lead attached to each dot thus allowing for multiple path transport measurements with two dots per path. In addition charge detection is implemented using a quantum point contact. Both in charge measurements as well as in transport we observe clear signatures of states from each dot. Resonances of two dots can be established allowing for serial transport via the corresponding path. Quadruple points with all three dots in resonance are prepared for different e…
We show that correlated two-particle backscattering can induce fractional charge oscillations in a quantum dot built at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator by means of magnetic barriers. The result nicely complements recent works where the fractional oscillations were obtained employing of semiclassical treatments. Moreover, since by rotating the magnetization of the barriers a fractional charge can be trapped in the dot via the Jackiw-Rebbi mechanism, the system we analyze offers the opportunity to study the interplay between this noninteracting charge fractionalization and th…
We report on magnetoconductance measurements through a weakly coupled quantum dot, containing roughly 900 electrons, in a wide magnetic field range from 0 T to 12 T. We find modulations of the conductance resonances in the quantum Hall regime for higher integer filling factors $6> ν_\mathrm{dot} > 2$, in addition to modulations at $2> ν_\mathrm{dot} > 1$ and at fractional filling factors $ν_\mathrm{dot} \gtrsim 2/3$, $1/3$. Depending on the internal filling factor, edge reconstruction inside the quantum dot leads to the formation of multiple concentric compressible regions, which contain discr…
We study electron transport through double quantum dots in series. The tunnel coupling of the discrete dot levels to external leads causes a shift of their energy. This energy renormalization affects the transport characteristics even in the limit of weak dot-lead coupling, when sequential transport dominates. We propose an experimental setup which reveals the renormalization effects in either the current-voltage characteristics or in the stability diagram.
We study the effect of a dot-lead interaction on transport through a quantum dot hybridized to two semi-infinite Luttinger-liquid leads. A bosonization approach is applied to treat the interaction between charge fluctuations on the dot and the dynamically generated image charge in the leads. The nonequilibrium distribution function of the dot and the tunneling current are computed within a master-equation approach. The presence of the excitonic dot-lead coupling is found to enhance transport in the vicinity of the Coulomb-blockade threshold. This behavior is in contrast to the usual power-law …
Graphene quantum dot with Maxwell fish eye potential energy profile is studied. A quasiclassical approximation is used given that potential energy is a slowly varying function of coordinates. Near the zero energy the spectrum of electron macroscopically degenerates. All the electron trajectories are closed circles that are classified by angular momentum and an additional integral of motion. Provided the complete filling of the lower Dirac zone, a universal value for Hall conductivity is found.
We study dephasing in electron transport through a large quantum dot (a Fabry-Perot interferometer) in the fractional quantum Hall regime with filling factor $2/3$. In the regime of sequential tunneling, dephasing occurs due to electron fractionalization into counterpropagating charge and neutral edge modes on the dot. In particular, when the charge mode moves much faster than the neutral mode, and at temperatures higher than the level spacing of the dot, electron fractionalization combined with tje fractional statistics of the charge mode leads to the dephasing selectively suppressing $h/e$ A…
The ground states of electrons in two vertically coupled quantum dots in the presence of an external magnetic field have been studied within the density functional theory. A phase diagram of the transition to the quantum Hall state in double quantum dots has been plotted for the Landau level filling factor $ν= 1$. It has been shown that the quantum Hall state can be stable for a zero tunnel splitting. The influence of the impurity potential on the stability condition for the quantum Hall state has been analyzed.
We report selective injection of both spin-up and spin-down single electrons into a quantum dot (QD) from spin-polarized non-equilibrium quantum Hall edge channels (ECs) generated by selective transmission of spin-resolved ECs using a surface gate placed at a distance from the QD. We change the spin polarization of non-equilibrium ECs by changing the bias voltages applied to different source Ohmic contacts. The efficiency of spin-up electron injection reaches 0.5, which is approximately 0.2 higher than that induced by spin-dependent tunnel coupling between QD and ECs. On the other hand, the ef…
We develop a formalism suitable for the study of transport properties of coherent multiple dots which captures and explains the experimentally observed features in terms of spectral properties of the system. The multiplet structure of the transmission spectrum and the role of the intra-dot and inter-dot Coulomb interaction are pointed out. The evolution of the sub-peaks with the magnetic field in the quantum Hall regime is shown. We suggest a specific oscillatory behaviour of the Hall resistance in strong magnetic field which can be experimentally tested.
The work of the Lublin group on the non-equillibrium transport through the quantum dot coupled to external leads (normal or superconducting) and subject to external time dependent fields has been reviewed.
We investigate a double quantum dot coupled to a transmission line resonator. By driving a current through the double dot, a population inversion between the dot levels can be created, and a lasing state of the radiation field is generated within a sharp resonance window. The transport current correlates with the lasing state. The sharp resonance condition allows for resolving small differences in the dot properties. Dissipative processes in the quantum dots and their effect on the lasing and transport behavior are investigated.
This work presents theoretical demonstration of a carrier trap unit formed by dual topological insulator constrictions (TIC) on the HgTe/CdTe quantum well (QW) with inverted band structures. The sample of HgTe/CdTe QW is patterned into a Hall bar device and a topological quantum dot is created by adding split gate electrodes closely on the QW. In sharp contrast to conventional semiconductor quantum dots, the presence or absence of topological edge states in the proposed quantum hall bar system leads to distinct propagating/insulating state of the TICs with large on/off ratio. This topological …
Motivated by recent experiments on electric transport through single molecules and quantum dots, we investigate a model for transport that allows for significant coupling between the electrons and a boson mode isolated on the molecule or dot. We focus our attention on the temperature dependent properties of the transport. In the Holstein picture for polaronic transport in molecular crystals the temperature dependence of the conductivity exhibits a crossover from coherent (band) to incoherent (hopping) transport. Here, the temperature dependence of the differential conductance on resonance does…
In this work, we investigate the spatial distributions and the widths of the incompressible strips, i.e. the edgestates. The incompressible strips that correspond to ν=1,2 and 1/3 filling factors are examined in the presence of a strong perpendicular magnetic field. We present a microscopic picture of the fractional quantum Hall effect based interferometers, within a phenomenological model. We adopt Laughlin quasi-particle properties in our calculation scheme. In the fractional regime, the partially occupied lowest Landau level is assumed to form an energy gap due to strong correlations. Essen…

We evaluate the spin density oscillations arising in quantum spin Hall quantum dots created via two localized magnetic barriers. The combined presence of magnetic barriers and spin-momentum locking, the hallmark of topological insulators, leads to peculiar phenomena: a half-integer charge is trapped in the dot for antiparallel magnetization of the barriers, and oscillations appear in the in-plane spin density, which are enhanced in the presence of electron interactions. Furthermore, we show that the number of these oscillations is determined by the number of particles inside the dot, so that t…
In the present work we theoretically study thermoelectric transport and heat transfer in a junction including a $T$-shaped double quantum dot coupled to nonmagnetic electrodes and supplemented with a third dot in a parallel configuration. We focus on the combined effect of Coulomb interactions and quantum interference occurring in the $T$-shaped portion of the considered triple quantum dot on the thermoelectric electron transport. The transport through the system is studied within the Coulomb blockade regime in the limit of strong intra-dot interactions between electrons beyond the linear resp…
We present Coulomb blockade measurements in a graphene double dot system. The coupling of the dots to the leads and between the dots can be tuned by graphene in-plane gates. The coupling is a non-monotonic function of the gate voltage. Using a purely capacitive model, we extract all relevant energy scales of the double dot system.
Electronic transport through a triple quantum dot system, with only a single dot coupled directly to external leads, is considered theoretically. The model includes Coulomb correlations in the central dot, while such correlations in the two side-coupled dots are omitted. The infinite-U mean-field slave-boson approach is used to obtain basic transport characteristics in the Kondo regime. When tuning position of the side-coupled dots' levels, transition from subradiant to superradiant like mode (and vice versa) has been found in the spectral function, in analogy to the Dicke effect in atomic phy…
We study transport through a double quantum dot system in which each quantum dot is coupled to a phonon mode. Such a system can be realized, e.g., using a suspended carbon nanotube. We find that the interplay between strong electron-phonon coupling and inter-dot tunneling can lead to a negative differential conductance at bias voltages exceeding the phonon frequency. Various transport properties are discussed, and we explain the physics of the occurrence of negative differential conductance in this system.
We investigate sequential tunneling transport through a semiconductor double quantum dot structure by combining a simple microscopic quantum confinement model with a Mott-Hubbard type correlation model. We calculate nonperturbatively the evolution of the Coulomb blockade oscillations as a function of the interdot barrier conductance, obtaining good qualitative agreement with the experimental data over the whole tunneling regime from the weak-coupling individual dot to the strong-coupling coherent double-dot molecular system.
We report on our investigation of the low-lying energy spectra and charge density of a two-dimensional quantum Hall liquid at $ν=\frac25$ that is Coulomb coupled to a quantum dot. The dot contains a hole and two/three electrons. We found that any external perturbation (caused by the close proximity of the quantum dot) locally changes the spin polarization of the incompressible liquid. The effect depends crucially on the separation distance of the quantum dot from the electron plane. Electron density distribution in the quantum Hall layer indicates creation of a quasihole that is localized by t…
We report on a Kondo correlated quantum dot connected to two-dimensional leads where we demonstrate the renormalization of the g-factor in the pure Zeeman case i.e, for magnetic fields parallel to the plane of the quantum dot. For the same system we study the influence of orbital effects by investigating the quantum Hall regime i.e. a perpendicular magnetic field is applied. In this case an unusual behaviour of the suppression of the Kondo effect and of the split zero-bias anomaly is observed. The splitting decreases with magnetic field and shows discontinuous changes which are attributed to t…
We report the inclusion of phonon scattering to our recently established numerical package QmeQ for transport in quantum dot systems. This enables straightforward calculations for a large variety of devices. As examples we show (i) transport in a double-dot structure, where energy relaxation is crucial to match the energy difference between the levels, and (ii) the generation of electrical power by contacting cold electric contacts with quantum dot states, which are subjected to heated phonons.
Spin-dependent transport through a two-level quantum dot in the sequential tunneling regime is analyzed theoretically by means of a real-time diagrammatic technique. It is shown that the current, tunnel magnetoresistance, and shot noise (Fano factor) strongly depend on the transport regime, providing a detailed information on the electronic structure of quantum dots and their coupling to external leads. When the dot is asymmetrically coupled to the leads, a negative differential conductance may occur in certain bias regions, which is associated with a super-Poissonian shot noise. In the case o…
Studies of electronic charge transport through semiconductor double quantum dots rely on a conventional "hole" model of transport in the three-electron regime. We show that experimental measurements of charge transport through a Si double quantum dot in this regime cannot be fully explained using the conventional picture. Using a Hartree-Fock (HF) formalism and relevant HF energy parameters extracted from transport data in the multiple-electron regime, we identify a novel spin-flip cotunneling process that lifts a singlet blockade.
We investigate theoretically electron transfer in a doble dot in a situation where it is governed by nuclear magnetic field: This has been recently achieved in experiment. We show how to partially compensate the nuclear magnetic field to restore Spin Blockade.
Spin-dependent electronic transport through a quantum dot side-coupled to two quantum dots and attached to ferromagnetic leads with collinear (parallel and antiparallel) magnetizations is analyzed theoretically. The intra-dot Coulomb correlations are taken into account, whereas the inter-dot ones are neglected. Transport characteristics, i.e. conductance and tunnel magnetoresistance associated with the magnetization rotation from parallel to antiparallel configurations, are calculated by the noneqiulibrium Green function technique. The Green functions are derived by the equation of motion meth…
A transport methodology to study the electron transport between quantum dots arrays based in Transfer Hamiltonian approach is presented. The interactions between the quantum dots and between the quantum dots and the electrodes are introduced by transition rates and capacitive couplings. The effects of the local potential are computed within the self-consistent field regime. The model has been developed and expressed in a matrix form in order to make it extendable to larger systems. Transport through several quantum dot configurations have been studied in order to validate the model. Despite th…
We study the transport through side-coupled double quantum dots, connected to normal and superconducting (SC) leads with a T-shape configuration. We find, using the numerical renormalization group, that the Coulomb interaction suppresses SC interference in the side dot, and enhances the conductance substantially in the Kondo regime. This behavior stands in total contrast to a wide Kondo valley seen in the normal transport. The SC proximity penetrating into the interfacial dot pushes the Kondo clouds, which screens the local moment in the side dot, towards the normal lead to make the singlet bo…
We show that the coherence of charge transfer through a weakly coupled double-dot dimer can be determined by analyzing the statistics of the conductance pattern, and does not require large phase coherence length in the host material. We present an experimental study of the charge transport through a small Si nanostructure, which contains two quantum dots. The transport through the dimer is shown to be coherent. At the same time, one of the dots is strongly coupled to the leads, and the overall transport is dominated by inelastic co-tunneling processes.
We report low-temperature transport spectroscopy of a graphene quantum dot fabricated by atomic force microscope nanolithography. The excellent spatial resolution of the atomic force microscope allows us to reliably fabricate quantum dots with short constrictions of less than 15 nm in length. Transport measurements demonstrate that the device is dominated by a single quantum dot over a wide gate range. The electron spin system of the quantum dot is investigated by applying an in-plane magnetic field. The results are consistent with a Lande g-factor of 2 but no regular spin filling sequence is …
We suggest a series of transport experiments on spin precession in quantum dots coupled to one or two ferromagnetic leads. Dot spin states are created by spin injection and analyzed via the linear conductance through the dot, while an applied magnetic field gives rise to the Hanle effect. Such a Hanle experiment can be used to determine the spin lifetime in the quantum dot, to measure the spin injection efficiency into the dot, as well as proving the existence of intrinsic spin precession which is driven by the Coulomb interaction.
We study the sub-gap spectrum and the transport properties of a double quantum dot coupled to metallic and superconducting leads. The coupling of both quantum dots to the superconducting lead induces a non-local pairing in both quantum dots by the Andreev reflection processes. Additionally, we obtain two channels of Cooper pair tunneling into a superconducting lead. In such a system, the direct tunneling process (by one of two dots) or the crossed tunneling process (by both quantum dots at the same time) is possible. We consider the dependence of the Andreev transmittance on an inter-dot tunne…
We study the transport through evanescent waves in graphene quantum dots of different geometries. The transmission is suppressed when the leads are attached to edges of the same majority sublattice. Otherwise, the transmission depends exponentially on the distance between leads in rectangular dots, and as a power law in circular dots. The transmission through junctions where the transmitted and reflected currents belong to the opposite valley as the incoming one depends on details of the lattice structure at distances comparable to the atomic spacing.
