We present Coulomb blockade measurements in a graphene double dot system. The coupling of the dots to the leads and between the dots can be tuned by graphene in-plane gates. The coupling is a non-monotonic function of the gate voltage. Using a purely capacitive model, we extract all relevant energy scales of the double dot system.

The band modulation of the silicene and graphene quantum dots is investigated by a first-principles method. We study and compare two analytic models of graphene quantum dots for calculating charge relaxation times due to electron-phonon interaction. We propose how to form spin qubits in graphene. A crucial requirement to achieve this goal is to find quantum dot states where the usual valley degeneracy in bulk graphene is lifted. We show that this problem can be avoided in quantum dots based on ribbons of graphene with semiconducting armchair boundaries. We study the transport through evanescent waves in graphene quantum dots of different geometries. The transmission is suppressed when the leads are attached to edges of the same majority sublattice. Otherwise, the transmission depends exponentially on the distance between leads in rectangular dots, and as a power law in circular dots. The transmission through junctions where the transmitted and reflected currents belong to the opposite valley as the incoming one depends on details of the lattice structure at distances comparable to the atomic spacing.

We suggest a simple approach to calculate the local density of states that effectively applies to any structure created by an axially symmetric potential on a continuous graphene sheet such as circular graphene quantum dots or rings. Calculations performed for the graphene quantum dot studied in a recent scanning tunneling microscopy measurement [{\sl Gutierrez et al. Nat. Phys. \textbf{12}, 1069--1075 (2016)}] show an excellent experimental-theoretical agreement.
We present graphene quantum dots endowed with addition energies as large as 1.6 eV, fabricated by the controlled rupture of a graphene sheet subjected to a large electron current in air. The size of the quantum dot islands is estimated to be in the 1 nm range. Within the Landauer transport formalism we demonstrate that conductance zeroes are possible in bipartite systems at half-filling when leads are contacted to different sublattice sites. In particular, we investigate the application of this theory to graphene quantum dots with leads in the armchair configuration. The obtained conductance cancellation is robust in the presence of any single-site impurity.

We analyze the single particle states at the edges of disordered graphene quantum dots. We show that generic graphene quantum dots support a number of edge states proportional to circumference of the dot over the lattice constant. Our analytical theory agrees well with numerical simulations. Perturbations breaking electron-hole symmetry like next-nearest neighbor hopping or edge impurities shift the edge states away from zero energy but do not change their total amount. We suggest a way of confining quasiparticles by an external potential in a small region of a graphene strip. Transversal electron motion plays a crucial role in this confinement. Properties of thus obtained graphene quantum dots are investigated theoretically for different types of the boundary conditions at the edges of the strip. The (quasi)bound states exist in all systems considered. At the same time, the dependence of the conductance on the gate voltage carries an information about the shape of the edges.
We report on the observation of periodic conductance oscillations near quantum Hall plateaus in suspended graphene nanoribbons. They are attributed to single quantum dots that form in the narrowest part of the ribbon, in the valleys and hills of a disorder potential. We investigate ground and excited state transport through small (d = 70 nm) graphene quantum dots. The successive spin filling of orbital states is detected by measuring the ground state energy as a function of a magnetic field. For a magnetic field in-plane of the quantum dot the Zemann splitting of spin states is measured. The results are compatible with a g-factor of 2 and we detect a spin-filling sequence for a series of states which is reasonable given the strength of exchange interaction effects expected for graphene.

A position-dependent doping breaks the equivalence between the upper and lower layer and lifts the degeneracy of the positive and negative momentum states of the dot. We use numerically exact Chebyshev expansion and kernel polynomial methods to study transport through circular graphene quantum dots in the framework of a tight-binding honeycomb lattice model. Our focus lies on the regime where individual modes of the electrostatically defined dot dominate the charge carrier dynamics. In particular, we discuss the scattering of an injected Dirac electron wave packet for a single quantum dot, electron confinement in the dot, the optical excitation of dot-bound modes, and the propagation of an electronic excitation along a linear array of dots.
We show that the low temperature electron transport properties of chemically functionalized graphene can be explained as sequential tunneling of charges through a two dimensional array of graphene quantum dots (GQD). Below 15 K, a total suppression of current due to Coulomb blockade through GQD array was observed. Temperature dependent current-gate voltage characteristics show Coulomb oscillations with energy scales of 6.2-10 meV corresponding to GQD sizes of 5-8 nm while resistance data exhibit an Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping arising from structural and size induced disorder.

Electronic properties of triangular and hexagonal nano-scale quantum dots (QDs) of Silicene and bilayer graphene are studied. It is shown that the low-energy edge-localized electronic states, existing within the size-quantized gap are easily tunable by electric field. We report on the fabrication and characterization of etched graphene quantum dots (QDs) on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and SiO2 with different island diameters. We perform a statistical analysis of Coulomb peak spacings over a wide energy range. The structure stability and electronic properties of edge carboxylated hexagonal and triangular graphene quantum dots are investigated by using density functional theory. The calculated binding energies show that the hexagonal clusters with armchair edges have the highest stability among all other flakes. We present theoretical results based on mean-field and exact many-body approaches showing that in bilayer triangular graphene quantum dots with zigzag edges the magnetism can be controlled by an external vertical electric-field. We demonstrate that without electric field the spins of the two layers of the quantum dot interact ferromagnetically. At a critical value of the electric-field, the total spin of the bilayer structure can be turned off or reduced to a single localized spin, a qubit isolated from contacts and free from interaction with nuclear spins.

We examine a graphene quantum dot formed by combining an electric and a uniform magnetic field. The electric field creates a smooth quantum well potential while the magnetic field induces an exponential tail to the dot states. The states peak in the well and the electrostatic barrier region as a result of the Klein tunneling effect. Coupling between dot states which peak in different regions can be achieved with the electric and magnetic fields. The tunability of this dot with moderate external fields could be used for designing quantum devices in monolayer graphene.

We present a highly controllable double quantum dot device based on bilayer graphene. Using a device architecture of interdigitated gate fingers, we can control the interdot tunnel coupling between 1 to 4 GHz and the mutual capacitive coupling between 0.2 and 0.6 meV, independently of the charge occupation of the quantum dots. The charging energy and hence the dot size remains nearly unchanged. The tuning range of the tunnel coupling covers the operating regime of typical silicon and GaAs spin qubit devices.
By means of an envelope function analysis, we perform a numerical investigation of the conductance behavior of a graphene structure consisting of two regions (dots) connected to the entrance and exit leads through constrictions and separated by a potential barrier. We present a tight-binding theory of triangular graphene quantum dots (TGQD) with zigzag edge and broken sublattice symmetry in external magnetic field. The lateral size quantization opens an energy gap and broken sublattice symmetry results in a shell of degenerate states at the Fermi level. We derive a semi-analytical form for zero-energy states in a magnetic field and show that the shell remains degenerate in a magnetic field, in analogy to the 0th Landau level of bulk graphene. We theoretically analyse the possibility to electrostatically confine electrons in circular quantum dot arrays, impressed on contacted graphene nanoribbons by top gates. Utilising exact numerical techniques, we compute the scattering efficiency of a single dot and demonstrate that for small-sized scatterers the cross-sections are dominated by quantum effects, where resonant scattering leads to a series of quasi-bound dot states.
