Considerable efforts have been made to trap massless Dirac fermions in graphene monolayer, but only quasi-bound states are realized in continuous graphene sheets up to now. Here, we demonstrate the realization of bound states in nanoscale graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in a continuous graphene sheet. The GQDs are electronically isolated from the surrounding continuous graphene sheet by circular boundaries, which are generated by strong coupling between graphene and substrate. By using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we observe single-electron charging states of the GQDs, seen as Coulomb oscillations in the tunneling conductance. Evolution of single-electron tunneling of the GQDs between the Coulomb blockade regime and the Coulomb staircase regime is observed by tuning the STM tip-sample distances. Spatial maps of the local electronic densities reveal concentric rings inside the GQDs with each ring corresponding to a single Coulomb oscillation of the tunneling spectra. These results indicate explicitly that the electrons are completely trapped inside the nanoscale GQDs.
Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_X$ nano-sheets (MXenes) are an emerging class of two-dimensional materials with outstanding potential to be employed in energy storage, catalysis, and triboelectric applications, on length scales ranging from the nano- to macroscopic. Despite rapidly accelerating interest in this new class of materials, their nanoscale frictional properties and in particular, their potential for solid lubrication on the nanoscale, have not been explored in detail yet. In this short communication, we present the first results on the nanoscale frictional characteristics of MXenes, in the form of a …
Graphene, the first true two-dimensional material still reveals the most remarkable transport properties among the growing class of two-dimensional materials. Although many studies have investigated fundamental scattering processes, the surprisingly large variation in the experimentally determined resistances associated with a localized defect is still an open issue. Here, we quantitatively investigate the local transport properties of graphene prepared by polymer assisted sublimation growth (PASG) using scanning tunneling potentiometry. PASG graphene is characterized by a spatially homogeneou…
Multi-terminal multi-dot devices have been put forward as versatile and performant setups for thermoelectric energy harvesting at the nanoscale. With a technique that encompasses and overtakes several of the usual theoretical tools used in this context, we explore a three-terminal Coulomb-coupled-dot device for refrigeration purposes. The refrigerator is monitored by either a voltage or a thermal bias. This comparative study shows that heat driven refrigerator is much underperforming than the power driven one, due to scarce on-dot charge fluctuations.
We introduce a high-temperature droplet epitaxy procedure, based on the control of the arsenization dynamics of nanoscale droplets of liquid Ga on GaAs(111)A surfaces. The use of high temperatures for the self-assembly of droplet epitaxy quantum dots solves major issues related to material defects, introduced during the droplet epitaxy fabrication process, which limited its use for single and entangled photon sources for quantum photonics applications. We identify the region in the parameter space which allows quantum dots to self-assemble with the desired emission wavelength and highly symmet…
In the present paper, the collective near-field effects in a two-graphene sheets plasmonic waveguide loaded with an array of Ag$_2$Se quantum dots excited by external radiation are theoretically studied. This research aims to develop a theoretical approach to realizing controllable excitation and the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in planar graphene waveguides. The proposed model is based on the semiclassical description that implies the dispersion equation's solution for SPPs excited in two coupled graphene sheets and the embedded quantum dots' energy spectra analysis. Using…
We experimentally verify hitherto untested theoretical predictions about the thermoelectric properties of Kondo correlated quantum dots (QDs). The specific conditions required for this study are obtained by using QDs epitaxially grown in nanowires, combined with a recently developed method for controlling and measuring temperature differences at the nanoscale. This makes it possible to obtain data of very high quality both below and above the Kondo temperature, and allows a quantitative comparison with theoretical predictions. Specifically, we verify that Kondo correlations can induce a polari…
This work investigates the electronic properties of the energy spectrum of a hybrid system composed of (i) a circular quantum dot of monolayer graphene surrounded by an infinite sheet of AA-stacked bilayer graphene and (ii) a circular quantum dot of AA-stacked graphene bilayer surrounded by infinite monolayer graphene. We establish analytical findings for the related energy levels and wave functions using the continuum model and the zigzag boundary conditions at the graphene monolayer-bilayer interface. We investigate the effects of perpendicular magnetic, dot radius, and electrical fields on …
Semiconductor coupled quantum dots provide a unique opportunity of tuning bandgaps by tailoring band offsets, making them ideal for photovoltaic and other applications. Here, we have studied stability, trends in the band gap, band offsets, and optical properties for a series of coupled quantum dots comprised of II-VI semiconductor using a hybrid functional method. We have shown how the quantum confinement and interfacial strain considerably affect the band gap and band offsets for these heterostructures at the nanoscale. We show that the trend in band offsets obtained from our first-principles…
Virtual Synthesis of Nanoscale Systems with Pre-Designed Properties: Fundamentals and Applications. Chapter 7. Nickel Oxide Quantum Dots and Polymer Nanowires
Control of atomic-scale interfaces between materials with distinct electronic structures is crucial for the design and fabrication of most electronic devices. In the case of two-dimensional (2D) materials, disparate electronic structures can be realized even within a single uniform sheet, merely by locally applying different vertical bias voltages. Indeed, it has been suggested that nanoscale electronic patterning in a single sheet can be achieved by placing the 2D material on a suitably pre-patterned substrate, exploiting the sensitivity of 2D materials to their environment via band alignment…
Compact chromium oxide thin film resistors for use in nanoscale quantum circuits
We propose and demonstrate a novel range of models to accurately determine the optical properties of nitrogen-free carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with ordered graphene layered structures. We confirm the results of our models against the full range of experimental results for CQDs available from an extensive review of the literature. The models can be equally applied to CQDs with varied sizes and with different oxygen content in the basal planes of the constituent graphenic sheets. We demonstrate that the experimentally observed blue fluorescent emission of nitrogen-free CQDs can be associated with…
We propose a nanoscale device consisting of a double quantum dot with strong intra- and inter- dot Coulomb repulsions. In this design, the current can only flow through the lower dot, but is triggered by the gate-controlled occupancy of the upper dot. At low temperatures, our calculations predict the double dot to pass through a narrow Kondo regime, resulting in highly sensitive switching characteristics between three well-defined states : insulating, normal conduction and resonant conduction.
Origami design principles are scale invariant and enable direct miniaturization of origami structures provided the sheets used for folding have equal thickness to length ratios. Recently, seminal steps have been taken to fabricate microscale origami using unidirectionally actuated sheets with nanoscale thickness. Here, we extend the full power of origami-inspired fabrication to nanoscale sheets by engineering bidirectional folding with 4 nm thick atomic layer deposition (ALD) SiNx-SiO2 bilayer films. Strain differentials within these bilayers result in bending, producing microscopic radii of c…
Due to their ability to strongly modify the local electromagnetic (EM) field through the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), plasmonic nanostructures have been often used to reshape the emission direction and enhance the radiative decay rate of quantum emitters, such as semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). These features are essential for quantum information processing, nanoscale photonic circuitry and optoelectronics. However, the modification and enhancement demonstrated thus far often drastically alter the local energy density of the emitters, and hence their intrinsic properties,…
We demonstrate experimentally an autonomous nanoscale energy harvester that utilises the physics of resonant tunnelling quantum dots. Gate defined quantum dots on GaAs/AlGaAs high-electron-mobility transistors are placed on either side of a hot electron reservoir. The discrete energy levels of the quantum dots are tuned to be aligned with low energy electrons on one side and high energy electrons on the other side of the hot reservoir. The quantum dots thus act as energy filters and allow for the conversion of heat from the cavity into electrical power. This energy harvester device, measured a…
Black phosphorus (BP) analogous tin(II) sulfide (SnS) has recently emerged as an attractive building block for electronic devices due to its highly anisotropic response. Two-dimensional (2D) SnS has shown to exhibit in-plane anisotropy in optical and electrical properties. However, the limitations in growing ultrasmall structures of SnS hinder the experimental exploration of anisotropic behavior in low dimension. Here, we present an elegant approach of synthesizing highly crystalline nanometer-sized SnS sheets. Ultrasmall SnS exhibits two distinct valleys along armchair and zig-zag directions …
Measuring degeneracy and broken-symmetry states of a system at nanoscale requires extremely high energy and spatial resolution, which has so far eluded direct observation. Here, we realize measurement of the degeneracy and subtle broken-symmetry states of graphene at nanoscale for the first time. By using edge-free graphene quantum dots, we are able to measure valley splitting and valley-contrasting spin splitting of graphene at the single-electron level. Our experiments detect large valley splitting around atomic defects of graphene due to the coexistence of sublattice symmetry breaking and t…
