Dielectric screening is greatly important to an accurate calculation of the exciton binding energies in two-dimensional materials. In this work, we calculate the dielectric function and 2D polarizability of multilayer (up to three) phosphorene sheets using Density Functional Theory. The 2D polarizabilities are then used in the dielectric screening of the excitonic interaction in multilayer phosphorene quantum dots. In the limit of large quantum dots, excitonic gaps are shown to exhibit very good agreement with state-of-the-art measurements of the optical gaps of multilayer phosphorene sheets deposited in different substrates.
By taking account of the electric-field-induced charge screening, a self-consistent calculation within the framework of the tight-binding approach is employed to obtain the electronic band structure of gated multilayer phosphorene and the charge densities on the different phosphorene layers. We find charge density and screening anomalies in single-gated multilayer phosphorene and electron-hole bilayers in dual-gated multilayer phosphorene. Due to the unique puckered lattice structure, both intralayer and interlayer charge screenings are important in gated multilayer phosphorene. We find that t…
We perform a comprehensive first-principles study of the electronic properties of phosphorene nanoribbons, phosphorene nanotubes, multilayer phosphorene, and heterobilayers of phosphorene and two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayer. The tensile strain and electric-field effects on electronic properties of low-dimensional phosphorene nanostructures are also investigated. Our calculations show that zigzag phosphorene nanoribbons (z-PNRs) are metals, regardless of the ribbon width while armchair phosphorene nanoribbons (a-PNRs) are semiconductors with indirect bandga…
We study the effects of a vertical electric field on the electronic band structure and transport in multilayer phosphorene and its nanoribbons. In phosphorene, at a critical value of the vertical electric field ($E_c$), the band gap closes and the band structure undergoes a massive-to-massless Dirac fermion transition along the armchair direction. This transition is observable in quantum Hall measurements, as the power-law dependence of the Landau-level energy on the magnetic field $B$ goes from $\sim (n+1/2)B$ below $E_c$, to $\sim [(n+1/2)B]^{2/3}$ at $E_c$, to $\sim [(n+1/2)B]^{1/2}$ above …
We theoretically investigate the unusual features of the magnetotransport in a monolayer phosphorene ferromagnetic/normal/ferromagnetic (F/N/F) hybrid structure. We find that the charge conductance can feature a minimum at parallel (P) configuration and a maximum near the antiparallel (AP) configuration of magnetization in the F/N/F structure with $n$-doped F and $p$-doped N regions and also a finite conductance in the AP configuration with the N region of $n$-type doping. In particular, the proposed structure exhibits giant magnetoresistance, which can be tuned to unity. This perfect switchin…
We investigate the effects of a perpendicular electric field applied to multilayer phosphorene nanoribbons with zigzag and armchair edges. Within the context of the tight-binding model, we explore the electronic properties of these systems giving emphasis to the appearance of Dirac-like spectra, a transition that occurs when the gate density associated with the applied displacement field is greater than the critical value $n_c$. We show that the confinement properties and the screening effects in such systems play an important role on the determination of $n_c$, suggesting a scheme to determin…
Excitonic superfluidity in double phosphorene monolayers is investigated using the BCS mean-field equations. Highly anisotropic superfluidity is predicted where we found that the maximum superfluid gap is in the BEC regime along the armchair direction and in the BCS-BEC crossover regime along the zigzag direction. We estimate the highest Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature with maximum value up to $\sim 90$ K with onset carrier densities as high as $4 \times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. This transition temperature is significantly larger than what is found in double electron-hole few-layers of g…
On the basis of many-body {\it ab-initio} calculations, using single-shot G$_0$W$_0$ method and Bethe-Salpeter equation, we study phosphorene nanoribbons (PNRs) in the two typical zigzag and armchair directions. The electronic structure, optical absorption, electron-hole (exciton) binding energy, exciton exchange splitting, and exciton wave functions are calculated for different size of PNRs. The typically strong splitting between singlet and triplet excitonic states make PNRs favorable systems for application in optoelectronic. Quantum confinement occurs in both kinds of PNRs, and it is stron…
Reduced electron screening in two-dimension plays a fundamental role in determining exciton properties, which dictates optoelectronic and photonic device performances. Considering the explicit electron-hole interaction within the $GW-$Bethe-Salpeter formalism, we first study the excitonic properties of pristine phosphorene and investigate the effects of strain and impurity coverage. The calculations reveal strongly bound exciton in these systems with anisotropic spatial delocalization. Further, we present a simplified hydrogenic model with anisotropic exciton mass and effective electron screen…
The anisotropic nature of the new two-dimensional (2D) material phosphorene, in contrast to other 2D materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors, allows excitons to be confined in a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) space predicted in theory, leading to remarkable phenomena arising from the reduced dimensionality and screening. Here, we report a trion (charged exciton) binding energy of 190 meV in few-layer phosphorene at room temperature, which is nearly one to two orders of magnitude larger than those in 2D TMD semiconductors (20-30 meV) and quasi-2D quantum …
Phosphorene, a single layer of black phosphorus, is a direct-band gap two-dimensional semiconductor with promising charge and spin transport properties. The electronic band structure of phosphorene is strongly affected by the structural anisotropy of the underlying crystal lattice. We describe the relevant conduction and valence bands close to the $Γ$ point by four- and six-band (with spin) $k \cdot p$ models, including the previously overlooked interband spin-orbit coupling which is essential for studying anisotropic crystals. All the $k \cdot p$ parameters are obtained by a robust fit to {\i…
Because of the reduced dielectric screening and enhanced Coulomb interactions, two-dimensional (2D) materials like phosphorene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit strong excitonic effects, resulting in fascinating many-particle phenomena covering both intralayer and interlayer excitons. Their intrinsic bandgaps and strong excitonic emissions allow the possibility to tune the inherent optical, electrical, and optoelectronic properties of 2D materials via a variety of external stimuli, making them potential candidates for novel optoelectronic applications. In this review, we summ…
One of the most striking features of novel 2D semiconductors (e.g., transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers or phosphorene) is a strong Coulomb interaction between charge carriers resulting in large excitonic effects. In particular, this leads to the formation of multi-carrier bound states upon photoexcitation (e.g., excitons, trions and biexcitons), which could remain stable at near-room temperatures and contribute significantly to optical properties of such materials. In the present work we have used the Path Integral Monte Carlo methodology to numerically study properties of multi-carrie…
Reflectance and magneto-reflectance experiments together with theoretical modelling based on the $\mathbf{k\cdot p}$ approach have been employed to study the evolution of direct bandgap excitons in MoS$_2$ layers with a thickness ranging from mono- to trilayer. The extra excitonic resonances observed in MoS$_2$ multilayers emerge as a result of the hybridization of Bloch states of each sub-layer due to the interlayer coupling. The properties of such excitons in bi- and trilayers are classified by the symmetry of corresponding crystals. The inter- and intralayer character of the reported excito…
In this article, we explore the anisotropic electron energy loss spectrum (EELS) in monolayer phosphorene based on ab-initio time dependent density functional theory calculations. Similar to black phosphorous, the EELS of undoped monolayer phosphorene is characterized by anisotropic excitonic peaks for energies in vicinity of the bandgap, and by interband plasmon peaks for higher energies. On doping, an additional intraband plasmon peak also appears for energies within the bandgap. Similar to other two dimensional systems, the intraband plasmon peak disperses as $ω_{\rm pl} \propto \sqrt{q}$ i…
The excitonic behavior of anisotropic two-dimensional crystals is investigated using numerical methods. We employ a screened potential arising due to the system polarizability to solve the central-potential problem using the Numerov approach. The dependence of the exciton energies on the interaction strength and mass anisotropy is demonstrated. We use our results to obtain the exciton binding energy in phosphorene as a function of the substrate dielectric constant.
A self-consistent scheme for the calculations of the interacting groundstate and the near bandgap optical spectra of mono- and multilayer transition-metal-dichalcogenide systems is presented. The approach combines a dielectric model for the Coulomb interaction potential in a multilayer environment, gap equations for the renormalized groundstate, and the Dirac-Wannier-equation to determine the excitonic properties. To account for the extension of the individual monolayers perpendicular to their basic plane, an effective thickness parameter in the Coulomb interaction potential is introduced. Num…
We investigate the electronic properties of $N$-layer black phosphorus by means of an analytical method based on a recently proposed tight-binding Hamiltonian involving $14$ hopping parameters. The method provides simple and accurate general expressions for the Hamiltonian of $N$-layer phosphorene, which are suitable for the study of electronic transport and optical properties of such systems, and the results show the features that emerge as the number of layers increases. In addition, we show that the $N$-layer problem can be translated into $N$ effective monolayer problems in the long wavele…
We propose a system of highly efficient photoemitters comprising metal-dielectric (plasmonic-excitonic) multilayered structures. In the proposed structure, the absorption in the excitonic layer is greatly enhanced through quantum interference between the split modes arising from the coupling of the layered excitons and the plasmons sustained by the metallic layer. Furthermore, the large interaction volume between surface plasmons and excitons causes exciton superradiance, which results in the extremely efficient photoemission. This finding indicates the possibility of designing highly efficien…
Monolayer and few-layer phosphorene are anisotropic quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors with a linear-dichroic light-matter interaction and a widely-tunable direct-band gap in the infrared frequency range. Despite recent theoretical predictions of strongly-bound excitons with unique properties, it remains experimentally challenging to probe the excitonic quasiparticles due to the severe oxidation during device fabrication. In this study, we report observation of strongly-bound excitons and trions with highly-anisotropic optical properties in intrinsic bilayer ph…
Layered van-der-Waals materials with hexagonal symmetry offer an extra degree of freedom to their electrons, the so called valley index or valley pseudospin. This quantity behaves conceptually like the electron spin and the term valleytronics has been coined. In this context, the group of semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are particularly appealing, due to large spin-orbit interactions and a direct bandgap at the K points of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. In this work, we present investigations of excitonic transitions in mono- and multilayer WSe$_2$ and MoSe$_2$ materials …
We present a quantitative study of the nonlinear optical response of layered perovskites placed inside planar photonic microcavities in the regime of strong light matter coupling, when excitonic and photonic modes hybridize and give rise to cavity polaritons. Two sources of nonlinearity are specified, the saturation of the excitonic transition with increase of the optical pump and Coulomb interaction between the excitons. It is demonstrated, that peculiar form of the interaction potential, specific to multilayer structure of organic perovskites, is responsible for substantial increase of the e…
At a large displacement field, in rhomboedral and Bernal-stacked graphene a normal paramagnetic state transitions to a correlated state. Recent experiments showed that such systems have several phase transitions as a function of the carrier density. The phase adjacent to a paramagnetic state has anomalously high resistance and reduced degeneracy of the Fermi sea. We show that both phenomena can be explained through a concept of partial intervalley exciton condensation: a fraction of particles condenses into excitons, and another forms an intervalley coherent Fermi liquid. The exciton part of t…
Metal-organic species can be designed to self-assemble in large-scale, atomically defined, supramolecular architectures. Hybrid quantum wells, where inorganic two-dimensional (2D) planes are separated by organic ligands, are a particular example. The ligands effectively provide an intralayer confinement for charge carriers resulting in a 2D electronic structure, even in multilayered assemblies. Air-stable metal organic chalcogenides hybrid quantum wells have recently been found to host tightly bound 2D excitons with strong optical anisotropy in a bulk matrix. Here, we investigate the excited c…
Recent experimental progresses have demonstrated the great potential of electronic and excitonic moiré superlattices in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for quantum many-body simulations and quantum optics applications. Here we reveal that the moiré potential landscapes in the TMDs heterostructures have an electrostatic origin from the spontaneous charge transfer across the heterointerfaces dependent on the atomic registry. This allows engineering tunable multi-chromatic superlattices through the interference of moiré potentials from independently configurable heterointerfaces in multil…
