In this paper we introduce a new and simple method to estimate the symbol rate for single carrier systems of unknown modulation. The introduced technique detects the symbol rate from a continuous range of symbol rates, i.e. it does not assume a finite set of candidate symbol rates. The method does not require any knowledge about system parameters and is therefore totally blind. The method belongs to the family of autocorrelationbased symbol rate estimators, yet, unlike many such schemes, its performance is insensitive to the value of the roll-off factor. We then propose a simple method for frequency offset compensation also based on the autocorrelation function. Moreover, we study the effect of multipath channel on the estimator performance and propose different enhancements including exploiting more than one zero crossing. The proposed estimator is implemented as part of a complete DVB-C [1] receiver and is verified using simulations and results in robust performance even at low SNR and high frequency offsets.
We investigate joint source channel coding (JSCC) for wireless image transmission over multipath fading channels. Inspired by recent works on deep learning based JSCC and model-based learning methods, we combine an autoencoder with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to cope with multipath fading. The proposed encoder and decoder use convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and directly map the source images to complex-valued baseband samples for OFDM transmission. The multipath channel and OFDM are represented by non-trainable (deterministic) but differentiable layers so that the sy…
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a transmission technique that uses several subcarrier frequencies (multicarrier) that are perpendicular to each other (orthogonal). This OFDM modulation technique effectively eliminates Intersymbol Interference (ISI) on a channel caused by the effects of multipath fading. To overcome this weakness, OFDM uses a guard interval (cyclic prefix) inserted in its transmission. This paper analyses the effect of different cyclic prefix lengths on OFDM performance on multipath channels using Matlab. Here, the cyclic prefix length as the main parameter…
The wide deployment of wireless industrial networks still faces the challenge of unreliable service due to severe multipath fading in industrial environments. Such fading effects are not only caused by the massive metal surfaces existing within the industrial environment but also, more significantly, the moving objects including operators and logistical vehicles. As a result, the mature analytical framework of mobile fading channel may not be appropriate for the wireless industrial networks especially the majority fixed wireless links. In this paper, we propose a qualitative analysis framework…
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has been confirmed to provide significant performance advantages against Doppler in high-mobility scenarios. The core feature of OTFS is that the time-variant channel is converted into a non-fading 2D channel in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain so that all symbols experience the same channel gain. In now available literature, the channel is assumed to be quasi-static over an OTFS frame. As for more practical channels, the input-output relation will be time-variant as the environment or medium changes. In this paper, we analyze the characterization…
The performance of GPS receivers with vector delay-locked tracking loop (VDLL) structure over a land mobile satellite (LMS) channel model for the simulation of multipath fading transmission is investigated. We apply vector delay-locked tracking loop receiver for GPS signal transmitting over LMS multipath fading situations. The adeptness of the vector tracking loop is to incessantly position when satellite GPS signal outage occurred. However, miscarriage tracking in one channel may overspread into the whole system originated the entire loss of locking on all satellites for vector tracking loop …
Extensive research has already started on 6G and beyond wireless technologies due to the envisioned new use-cases and potential new requirements for future wireless networks. Although a plethora of modern physical layer solutions have been introduced in the last few decades, it is undeniable that a level of saturation has been reached in terms of the available spectrum, adapted modulation/coding solutions and accordingly the maximum capacity. Within this context, communications through reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which enable novel and effective functionalities including wave a…
Radio frequency sources are observed at a fusion center via sensor measurements made over slow flat-fading channels. The number of sources may be larger than the number of sensors, but their activity is sparse and intermittent with bursty transmission patterns. To account for this, sources are modeled as hidden Markov models with known or unknown parameters. The problem of blind source estimation in the absence of channel state information is tackled via a novel algorithm, consisting of a dictionary learning (DL) stage and a per-source stochastic filtering (PSF) stage. The two stages work in t…
In this paper, we investigate the performance of energy detection-based spectrum sensing over F composite fading channels. To this end, an analytical expression for the average detection probability is firstly derived. This expression is then extended to account for collaborative spectrum sensing, square-law selection diversity reception and noise power uncertainty. The corresponding receiver operating characteristics (ROC) are analyzed for different conditions of the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), noise power uncertainty, time-bandwidth product, multipath fading, shadowing, number of di…

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) has been studied for more than a quarter of a century; however, it has been difficult to design a classifier that operates successfully under changing multipath fading conditions and other impairments. Recently, deep learning (DL)-based methods are adopted by AMC systems and major improvements are reported. In this paper, a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) classifier model is proposed to classify modulation classes in terms of their families, i.e., types. The proposed classifier is robust against realistic wireless channel impairments and in re…
The performance of physical-layer security of the classic Wyner's wiretap model over Fisher-Snedecor F composite fading channels is considered in this work. Specifically, the main channel (i.e., between the source and the legitimate destination) and the eavesdropper's channel (i.e., between the source and the illegitimate destination) are assumed to experience independent quasi-static Fisher-Snedecor F fading conditions, which have been shown to be encountered in realistic wireless transmission scenarios in conventional and emerging communication systems. In this context, exact closed-form exp…
We consider the problem of recovering channel code parameters over a candidate set by merely analyzing the received encoded signals. We propose a deep learning-based solution that I) is capable of identifying the channel code parameters for any coding scheme (such as LDPC, Convolutional, Turbo, and Polar codes), II) is robust against channel impairments like multi-path fading, III) does not require any previous knowledge or estimation of channel state or signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and IV) outperforms related works in terms of probability of detecting the correct code parameters.
In this paper, we focus on the problem of blind joint calibration of multiband transceivers and time-delay (TD) estimation of multipath channels. We show that this problem can be formulated as a particular case of covariance matching. Although this problem is severely ill-posed, prior information about radio-frequency chain distortions and multipath channel sparsity is used for regularization. This approach leads to a biconvex optimization problem, which is formulated as a rank-constrained linear system and solved by a simple group Lasso algorithm.Numerical experiments show that the proposed a…
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a modulation technique that is dedicated to the high-speed mobility scenario. However, its transmission involves a two-dimensional convolution of the symbols of interest and the multipath fading channel, and it complicates the equalization. In addition to the high-complexity issue, the existing pilot pattern to estimate the unknown channel accurately requires large overhead to avoid the pilot being contaminated, which is spectrally inefficient. In this paper, we propose a receiver approach by the marriage of the OTFS and a large-scale antenna array, wh…

Inspired by the promising potential of RIS-based transmission, we investigate a RIS-enabled IoT network with the source node employing a RIS-based access point. The system is modelled with reference to a receiver transmitter pair and the Fisher-Snedecor F model is adopted to analyse the composite fading and shadowing channel. Closed-form expressions are derived for the system with regards to the average capacity, average bit error rate (BER) and outage p…
The research presents a procedure of the closed-form average bit error rate evaluation for wireless communication systems in the presence of multipath fading. A generalization of the classical moment generating function is applied, and a connection between the Hankel-type contour-integral representation of the Marcum Q-function and Gauss Q-function is obtained and applied to the analytic derivation of the quadrature amplitude modulated signal average bit error rate in the presence of Nakagami-m fading. The correctness of the obtained solution was verified, and its computational efficiency (in …

We provide a new generation solution to the fundamental old problem of a doubly selective fading channel estimation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. For systems based on OFDM, we propose a deep learning (DL)-based blind doubly selective channel estimator. This estimator does require no pilot symbols, unlike the corresponding state-of-the-art estimators, even during the estimation of a deep fading doubly selective channel. We also provide the first of its kind theory on the testing mean squared error (MSE) performance of our investigated blind OFDM channel estimato…

In this line, we present the appropriate signal model that accommodates the different technical and environmental parameters. In particular, it takes into consideration the antenna gains, the central frequency, the transmission range, the environmental conditions, i.e. temperature, humidity and pressure, the spatial jitter between the transmitter and receiver antennas, whi…
We present a deep learning based joint source channel coding (JSCC) scheme for wireless image transmission over multipath fading channels with non-linear signal clipping. In this paper, a recently conducted measurement campaign for unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) channels is introduced. The downlink signals of an in-service long-time-evolution (LTE) network which is deployed in a suburban scenario were acquired. Five horizontal and five vertical flight routes were considered. The channel impulse responses (CIRs) are extracted from the received data by exploiting the cell specific signals (CRSs). Based on the CIRs, the parameters of multipath components (MPCs) are estimated by using a high-resolution algorithm derived according to the space-alternating generalized…
The proposed research performs an analysis of the capacity higher-order statistics for a single-input multiple-output multiantenna wireless communication system equipped with a maximum-ratio combining scheme. It was assumed that the propagation multipath channel is described with the $κ-μ$ fading model with the correlated dominant components. Closed-form and asymptotic expressions were derived and applied to the problem of minimum capacity reliability (due to channel fluctuations, thus possible rate deterioration) and corresponding signal-to-noise ratio analysis. The performed computer simulat…
In this paper, we investigate the blind channel estimation problem for MIMO systems under Rayleigh fading channel. Conventional MIMO communication techniques require transmitting a considerable amount of training symbols as pilots in each data block to obtain the channel state information (CSI) such that the transmitted signals can be successfully recovered. However, the pilot overhead and contamination become a bottleneck for the practical application of MIMO systems with the increase of the number of antennas. To overcome this obstacle, we propose a blind channel estimation framework, where …
We exploit multi-path fading propagation to improve both the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio and the stability of wireless communications within electromagnetic environments that support rich multipath propagation. Quasi-passive propagation control with multiple binary reconfigurable intelligent surfaces is adopted to control the stationary waves supported by a metallic cavity hosting a software-defined radio link. Results are demonstrated in terms of the error vector magnitude minimization of a quadrature phase-shift modulation scheme under no-line-of-sight conditions. It is found tha…
This paper mainly illustrates the Bit error rate performance of M-ary QAM and M-ary PSK for different values of SNR over Rician Fading channel. A signal experiences multipath propagation in the wireless communication system which causes expeditious signal amplitude fluctuations in time, is defined as fading. Rician Fading is a small signal fading. Rician fading is a hypothetical model for radio propagation inconsistency produced by fractional cancellation of a radio signal by itself and as a result the signal reaches in the receiver by several different paths. In this case, at least one of the…

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have attracted great attention as a potential beyond 5G technology. These surfaces consist of many passive elements of metamaterials whose impedance can be controllable to change the phase, amplitude, or other characteristics of wireless signals impinging on them. Channel estimation is a critical task when it comes to the control of a large RIS when having a channel with a large number of multipath components. In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation scheme that exploits spatial correlation characteristics at both the massive multiple-inpu…
Node selection is a simple technique to achieve diversity and thereby enhance the physical layer security in future wireless communication systems which require low complexity. High-speed data transmission often encounters frequency selective fading. In this context, we evaluate the exact closed-form expression for the ergodic secrecy rate (ESR) of the optimal source-destination pair selection scheme with single-carrier cyclic-prefix modulation, where the destination and eavesdropper channels both exhibit independent frequency selective fading with an arbitrary number of multipath components. …
In this paper, a cyclic-prefixed single-carrier (CPSC) transmission scheme with phase shift keying (PSK) signaling is presented for broadband wireless communications systems empowered by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In the proposed CPSC-RIS, the RIS is configured according to the transmitted PSK symbols such that different cyclically delayed versions of the incident signal are created by the RIS to achieve multipath diversity. A practical and efficient channel estimator is developed for CPSC-RIS and the mean square error of the channel estimation is expressed in closed-form. We …
This work considers a multicell Massive MIMO network with $L$ cells, each comprising a BS with $M$ antennas and $K$ single-antenna user equipments. Within this setting, we are interested in deriving approximations of the achievable rates in the uplink and downlink under the assumption that single-cell linear processing is used at each BS and that each intracell link forms an uncorrelated MIMO Rician fading channel matrix; that is, with a deterministic line-of-sight (LoS) path and a stochastic non-line-of-sight component describing a spatial uncorrelated multipath environment. The analysis is c…

This paper is the first attempt to address this overall problem jointly. We propose a complete blind receiver approach that jointly estimates the unknown channel state inform…

We study federated edge learning (FEEL), where wireless edge devices, each with its own dataset, learn a global model collaboratively with the help of a wireless access point acting as the parameter server (PS). At each iteration, wireless devices perform local updates using their local data and the most recent global model received from the PS, and send their local updates to the PS over a wireless fading multiple access channel (MAC). The PS then updates the global model according to the signal received over the wireless MAC, and shares it with the devices. Motivated by the additive nature o…
