Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a modulation technique that is dedicated to the high-speed mobility scenario. However, its transmission involves a two-dimensional convolution of the symbols of interest and the multipath fading channel, and it complicates the equalization. In addition to the high-complexity issue, the existing pilot pattern to estimate the unknown channel accurately requires large overhead to avoid the pilot being contaminated, which is spectrally inefficient. In this paper, we propose a receiver approach by the marriage of the OTFS and a large-scale antenna array, which allows low-complexity detection and low-overhead pilot pattern design. First, the received signal from each path of the multipath fading channel is identified by a high-resolution receive beamformer facilitated by a large-scale antenna array. Then the identified signal from each angle in the delay-Doppler domain reduces to a flat-faded signal, which can be simply equalized using the channel information estimated by our pilot pattern. We further provide the estimator of the channel fading and the rotations of delay and Doppler. With these estimates, the symbols of interest can be recovered, and then, the signals from all angles of arrival are combined as different diversity versions. In addition, our pilot pattern with only around 25% overhead of the existing pilot pattern ensures the same protection of pilot pollution. Eventually, the efficiency, the reliability, and the low complexity of the proposed receiver approach are further validated by the numerical results.
In this letter, we investigate error performance of rectangular pulse-shaped orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation with a practical receiver. Specifically, we consider an essential bandpass filter at receiver RF front-end, which has been ignored in existing works. We analyse the effect of rectangular pulses on practical OTFS receiver performance, and derive the exact forms of interference in delay-Doppler (DD) domain. We demonstrate that the transmitted information symbols in certain regions of the DD domain are severely contaminated. As a result, there is an error floor in the rec…
In this paper, we analyze the performance of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation with antenna selection at the receiver, where $n_s$ out of $n_r$ receive antennas with maximum channel Frobenius norms in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain are selected. Single-input multiple-output OTFS (SIMO-OTFS), multiple-input multiple-output OTFS (MIMO-OTFS), and space-time coded OTFS (STC-OTFS) systems with receive antenna selection (RAS) are considered. We consider these systems without and with phase rotation. Our diversity analysis results show that, with no phase rotation, SIMO-OTFS and MIMO-O…
The recent emergence of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation as a novel PHY-layer mechanism is more suitable in high-mobility wireless communication scenarios than traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Although multiple studies have analyzed OTFS performance using theoretical and ideal baseband pulseshapes, a challenging and open problem is the development of effective receivers for practical OTFS systems that must rely on non-ideal pulseshapes for transmission. This work focuses on the design of practical receivers for OTFS. We consider a fractionally spa…
This paper presents a low complexity detector for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems based on the recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. In the proposed detector, the copies of the transmitted symbol-vectors received through the different diversity branches (propagation paths and receive antennas) are linearly combined using the maximum ratio combining (MRC) technique to iteratively improve the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) at the output of the combiner. To alleviate the performance degradation due to spatial correlation at the receiver…

In this paper, we present a unique word (UW)-based channel estimation approach for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems under doubly dispersive channels, which is applied to orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) with space time coding (STC). The OTFS modulation has been recently proposed as a robust technique under time varying channels due to its property of spreading the data symbols over time and frequency. Yet another relevant aspect is the employment of multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver. Therefore, we consider an STC MIMO system with cyclic delay diversity at the…
The recent proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation shows signifcant advantages than conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for high mobility wireless communications. However, a challenging problem is the development of effcient receivers for practical OTFS systems with low complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel delay-Doppler reversal (DDR) technology for OTFS system with desired performance and low complexity. We present the DDR technology from a perspective of two-dimensional cascaded channel model, analyze its computational complexity and als…
Orthogonal time frequency space modulation is a two dimensional (2D) delay-Doppler domain waveform. It uses inverse symplectic Fourier transform (ISFFT) to spread the signal in time-frequency domain. To extract diversity gain from 2D spreaded signal, advanced receivers are required. In this work, we investigate a low complexity linear minimum mean square error receiver which exploits sparsity and quasi-banded structure of matrices involved in the demodulation process which results in a log-linear order of complexity without any performance degradation of BER.
Orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) scheme, which transforms a time and frequency selective channel into an almost non-selective channel in the delay-Doppler domain, establishes reliable wireless communication for high-speed moving devices. This work designs and analyzes low-complexity zero-forcing (LZ) and minimum mean square error (LM) receivers for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-OTFS systems with perfect and imperfect receive channel state information (CSI). The proposed receivers provide exactly the same solution as that of the conventional counterparts, and reduce the complexity…
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation have gained attention in recent wireless research. RIS technology aids communication by reflecting the incident electromagnetic waves towards the receiver, and OTFS modulation is effective in high-Doppler channels. This paper presents an early investigation of RIS-aided OTFS in high-Doppler channels. We derive the end-to-end delay-Doppler (DD) domain input-output relation of a RIS-aided OTFS system, considering rectangular pulses and fractional delay-Doppler values. We also consider a Zak receiver f…
Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) is considered as one of the most important applications of future wireless communication networks. However, the Doppler effect caused by the vehicle mobility may seriously deteriorate the performance of the vehicular communication links, especially when the channels exhibit a large number of Doppler frequency offsets (DFOs). Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a new waveform designed in the delay-Doppler domain, and can effectively convert a doubly dispersive channel into an almost non-fading channel, which makes it very attractive for V2X communications. In t…
Motivated by automotive applications, we consider joint radar sensing and data communication for a system operating at millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency bands, where a Base Station (BS) is equipped with a co-located radar receiver and sends data using the Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation format. We consider two distinct modes of operation. In Discovery mode, a single common data stream is broadcast over a wide angular sector. The radar receiver must detect the presence of not yet acquired targets and perform coarse estimation of their parameters (angle of arrival, range, and …
We investigate a coded uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) configuration in which groups of co-channel users are modulated in accordance with orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS). We take advantage of OTFS characteristics to achieve NOMA spectrum sharing in the delay-Doppler domain between stationary and mobile users. We develop an efficient iterative turbo receiver based on the principle of successive interference cancellation (SIC) to overcome the co-channel interference (CCI). We propose two turbo detector algorithms: orthogonal approximate message passing with linear minimum mea…
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has recently emerged as an effective waveform to tackle the linear time-varying channels. In OTFS literature, approximately constant channel gains for every group of samples within each OTFS block are assumed. This leads to limitations for OTFS on the maximum Doppler frequency that it can tolerate. Additionally, presence of cyclic prefix (CP) in OTFS signal limits the flexibility in adjusting its parameters to improve its robustness against channel time variations. Therefore, in this paper, we study the possibility of removing the CP overhead f…

Recently, orthogonal time-frequency-space (OTFS) modulation is used as a promising candidate waveform for high mobility communication scenarios. In practical transmission, OTFS with rectangular pulse shaping is implemented using different prefix/suffix configurations including reduced-cyclic prefix (RCP), full-CP (FCP), full-zero suffix (FZS), and reduced-zero padded (RZP). However, for each prefix/suffix type, different effective channel are seen at the receiver side resulting in dissimilar performance of the various OTFS configurations given a specific communication scenario. To fulfill this…

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is being pursued in recent times as a suitable wireless transmission technology for use in high mobility scenarios. In this work, we propose nonorthogonal multiple acess (NOMA) based OTFS which may be called NOMA-OTFS system and evaluate its performance from system level and link level perspective. The challenge lies in the fact that while OTFS transmission technology is known for its resilience to high mobility conditions, while NOMA is known to yield high spectral efficiency in low mobility scenarios in comparison to orthogonal multiple access (OMA). We…
In this paper, we present a deep neural network (DNN) based transceiver architecture for delay-Doppler (DD) channel training and detection of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation signals along with IQ imbalance (IQI) compensation. The proposed transceiver learns the DD channel over a spatial coherence interval and detects the information symbols using a single DNN trained for this purpose at the receiver. The proposed transceiver also learns the IQ imbalances present in the transmitter and receiver and effectively compensates them. The transmit IQI compensation is realized using a…
Recently, the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is proposed for 6G wireless system to deal with high Doppler spread. The high Doppler spread happens when the transmitted signal is reflected towards the receiver by fast moving objects (e.g. high speed cars), which causes inter-carrier interference (ICI). Recent state-of-the-art OTFS detectors fail to achieve an acceptable bit-error-rate (BER) performance as the number of mobile reflectors increases which in turn, results in high inter-carrier-interference (ICI). In this paper, we propose a novel detector for OTFS systems, referr…
We consider a joint radar estimation and communication system using orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. The scenario is motivated by vehicular applications where a vehicle equipped with a mono-static radar wishes to communicate data to its target receiver, while estimating parameters of interest related to this receiver. In a point-to-point communication setting over multi-path time-frequency selective channels, we study the joint radar and communication system from two perspectives, i.e., the radar estimation at the transmitter as well as the symbol detection at the receiver. F…
This paper studies a downlink system that combines orthogonal-time-frequency-space (OTFS) modulation and sparse code multiple access (SCMA) to support massive connectivity in high-mobility environments. We propose a cross-domain receiver for the considered OTFS-SCMA system which efficiently carries out OTFS symbol estimation and SCMA decoding in a joint manner. This is done by iteratively passing the extrinsic information between the time domain and the delay-Doppler (DD) domain via the corresponding unitary transformation to ensure the principal orthogonality of errors from each domain. We sh…

First, the 3D UL channel model and the received signal model in the angle-delay-Doppler domain are studied. Secondly, the 3D-Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm is utilized for the extraction of the UL channel parameters, including channel gains, directions of arrival, delays, and Doppler frequencies, over the antenna-time-frequency domain. Extensive work has demonstrated the excellent performance of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation in high-mobility scenarios. Time-variant wideband channel estimation serves as one of the key compositions of OTFS receivers since the data detection requires accurate channel state information (CSI). In practical wideband OTFS systems, the Doppler shift brought by the high mobility is frequency-dependent, which is referred to as the Doppler Squint Effect (DSE). Unfortunately, DSE was ignored in overall prior estimation schemes employed in OTFS systems, which leads to severe performan…
Three dimensional (3D) radiation pattern of an antenna mounted at a drone can significantly influence the air-to-ground (A2G) link quality. Even when a drone transmitter is very close to a ground receiver, if the antenna orientations are not aligned properly, a significant degradation can be observed in the received signal power at the receiver. To characterize such effects for a doughnut-shaped antenna radiation pattern, using an ultra-wideband (UWB) transmitter at the drone and a UWB receiver at the ground, we carry out A2G channel measurements to capture the link quality at the ground recei…
Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation is a recently proposed scheme for time-varying narrowband channels in terrestrial radio-frequency communications. Underwater acoustic (UWA) and ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems, on the other hand, confront wideband time-varying channels. Unlike narrowband channels, for which time contractions or dilations due to Doppler effect can be approximated by frequency-shifts, the Doppler effect in wideband channels results in frequency-dependent non-uniform shift of signal frequencies across the band. In this paper, we develop an OTFS-like mod…
5G mmWave MIMO systems enable accurate estimation of the user position and mapping of the radio environment using a single snapshot when both the base station (BS) and user are equipped with large antenna arrays. However, massive arrays are initially expected only at the BS side, likely leaving users with one or very few antennas. In this paper, we propose a novel method for single-snapshot localization and mapping in the more challenging case of a user equipped with a single-antenna receiver. The joint maximum likelihood (ML) estimation problem is formulated and its solution formally derived.…
MmWave multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems using a single-antenna receiver are regarded as promising solution for the near future, before the full-fledged 5G MIMO will be widespread. However, for MISO systems synchronization cannot be performed jointly with user localization unless two-way transmissions are used. In this paper we show that thanks to the use of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), joint localization and synchronization is possible with only downlink MISO transmissions. The direct maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for the position and clock offset is derived. To o…
