Radio frequency sources are observed at a fusion center via sensor measurements made over slow flat-fading channels. The number of sources may be larger than the number of sensors, but their activity is sparse and intermittent with bursty transmission patterns. To account for this, sources are modeled as hidden Markov models with known or unknown parameters. The problem of blind source estimation in the absence of channel state information is tackled via a novel algorithm, consisting of a dictionary learning (DL) stage and a per-source stochastic filtering (PSF) stage. The two stages work in tandem, with the latter operating on the output produced by the former. Both stages are designed so as to account for the sparsity and memory of the sources. To this end, smooth LASSO is integrated with DL, while the forward-backward algorithm and Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm are leveraged for PSF. It is shown that the proposed algorithm can enhance the detection and the estimation performance of the sources, and that it is robust to the sparsity level.
In this paper we introduce a new and simple method to estimate the symbol rate for single carrier systems of unknown modulation. The introduced technique detects the symbol rate from a continuous range of symbol rates, i.e. it does not assume a finite set of candidate symbol rates. The method does not require any knowledge about system parameters and is therefore totally blind. The method belongs to the family of autocorrelationbased symbol rate estimators, yet, unlike many such schemes, its performance is insensitive to the value of the roll-off factor. We then propose a simple method for fre…
We consider the problem of recovering channel code parameters over a candidate set by merely analyzing the received encoded signals. We propose a deep learning-based solution that I) is capable of identifying the channel code parameters for any coding scheme (such as LDPC, Convolutional, Turbo, and Polar codes), II) is robust against channel impairments like multi-path fading, III) does not require any previous knowledge or estimation of channel state or signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and IV) outperforms related works in terms of probability of detecting the correct code parameters.

We provide a new generation solution to the fundamental old problem of a doubly selective fading channel estimation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. For systems based on OFDM, we propose a deep learning (DL)-based blind doubly selective channel estimator. This estimator does require no pilot symbols, unlike the corresponding state-of-the-art estimators, even during the estimation of a deep fading doubly selective channel. We also provide the first of its kind theory on the testing mean squared error (MSE) performance of our investigated blind OFDM channel estimato…
In this paper, we investigate the blind channel estimation problem for MIMO systems under Rayleigh fading channel. Conventional MIMO communication techniques require transmitting a considerable amount of training symbols as pilots in each data block to obtain the channel state information (CSI) such that the transmitted signals can be successfully recovered. However, the pilot overhead and contamination become a bottleneck for the practical application of MIMO systems with the increase of the number of antennas. To overcome this obstacle, we propose a blind channel estimation framework, where …
Previous approaches for blind identification of space-frequency block codes (SFBC) do not perform well for short observation periods due to their inefficient utilization of frequency-domain redundancy. This paper proposes a hypothesis test (HT)-based algorithm and a support vector machine (SVM)-based algorithm for SFBC signals identification over frequency-selective fading channels to exploit two-dimensional space-frequency domain redundancy. Based on the central limit theorem, space-domain redundancy is exploited to construct the cross-correlation function of the estimator and frequency-domai…
Random access is necessary in crowded scenarios due to the limitation of pilot sequences and the intermittent pattern of device activity. Nowadays, most of the related works are based on independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) channels. However, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels are not always i.i.d. in realistic outdoor wireless propagation environments. In this paper, a device grouping and pilot set allocation algorithm is proposed for the uplink massive MIMO systems over spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels. Firstly, devices are divided into multiple g…
We study the problem of semi-blind channel estimation and symbol detection in the uplink of multi-cell massive MIMO systems with spatially correlated time-varying channels. An algorithm based on expectation propagation (EP) is developed to iteratively approximate the joint a posteriori distribution of the unknown channel matrix and the transmitted data symbols with a distribution from an exponential family. This distribution is then used for direct estimation of the channel matrix and detection of data symbols. A modified version of the popular Kalman filtering algorithm referred to as KF-M em…

We study federated edge learning (FEEL), where wireless edge devices, each with its own dataset, learn a global model collaboratively with the help of a wireless access point acting as the parameter server (PS). At each iteration, wireless devices perform local updates using their local data and the most recent global model received from the PS, and send their local updates to the PS over a wireless fading multiple access channel (MAC). The PS then updates the global model according to the signal received over the wireless MAC, and shares it with the devices. Motivated by the additive nature o…
We propose a method for MIMO decoding when channel state information (CSI) is unknown to both the transmitter and receiver. The proposed method requires some structure in the transmitted signal for the decoding to be effective, in particular that the underlying sources are drawn from a hypercubic space. Our proposed technique fits a minimum volume parallelepiped to the received samples. This problem can be expressed as a non-convex optimization problem that can be solved with high probability by gradient descent. Our blind decoding algorithm can be used when communicating over unknown MIMO wir…
This paper investigates a complete blind receiver approach in an unknown multipath fading channel, which has multiple tasks including blind channel estimation, noise power estimation, modulation classification, channel coding recognition, and data detection. Each of these tasks has been sufficiently studied in the literature. However, to the best of our knowledge, this overall problem has not been investigated previously. This paper is the first attempt to address this overall problem jointly. We propose a complete blind receiver approach that jointly estimates the unknown channel state inform…

Grant-free non-coherent index-modulation (NC-IM) has been recently considered as an efficient massive access scheme for enabling cost- and energy-limited Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices that transmit small data packets. This paper investigates the grant-free NC-IM scheme combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing for applicant to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based massive IoT access. Specifically, each device is assigned a unique non-orthogonal signature sequence codebook. Each active device transmits one of its signature sequences in the given time-frequency resources, by modu…

Recent research investigates the decode-and-forward (DF) relaying for mixed radio frequency (RF) and terahertz (THz) wireless links with zero-boresight pointing errors. In this letter, we analyze the performance of a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying for the RF-THz link to interface the access network on the RF technology with wireless THz transmissions. We develop probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end SNR for the relay-assisted system in terms of bivariate Fox's H function considering $α$-$μ$ fading for the THz system with n…
The conventional grant-based network relies on the handshaking between base station and active users to achieve dynamic multi-user scheduling, which may cost large signaling overheads as well as system latency. To address those problems, the grant-free receiver design is considered in this paper based on sparse code multiple access (SCMA), one of the promising air interface technologies for 5G wireless networks. With the presence of unknown multipath fading, the proposed receiver blindly performs joint channel estimation and data decoding without knowing the user activity in the network. Based…
