Random access is necessary in crowded scenarios due to the limitation of pilot sequences and the intermittent pattern of device activity. Nowadays, most of the related works are based on independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) channels. However, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels are not always i.i.d. in realistic outdoor wireless propagation environments. In this paper, a device grouping and pilot set allocation algorithm is proposed for the uplink massive MIMO systems over spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels. Firstly, devices are divided into multiple groups, and the channel covariance matrixes of devices within the same group are approximately orthogonal. In each group, a dedicated pilot set is assigned. Then active devices perform random pilot and data access process. The mean square error of channel estimation (MSE-CE) and the spectral efficiency of this scheme are derived, and the MSE-CE can be minimized when collision devices have non-overlapping angle of arrival (AoA) intervals. Simulation results indicate that the MSE-CE and spectral efficiency of this protocol are improved compared with the traditional scheme. The MSE-CE of the proposed scheme is close to the theoretical lower bound over a wide signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region especially for long pilot sequence. Furthermore, the MSE-CE performance gains are significant in high SNR and strongly correlated scenarios.
The recently proposed Fluctuating Two-Ray (FTR) model is gaining momentum as a reference fading model in scenarios where two dominant specular waves are present. Despite the numerous research works devoted to the performance analysis under FTR fading, little attention has been paid to effectively understanding the interplay between the fading model parameters and the fading severity. According to a new scale defined in this work, which measures the hyper-Rayleigh character of a fading channel in terms of the Amount of Fading, the outage probability and the average capacity, we see that the FTR…
We introduce the fdRLoS fading model as a natural generalization of the double-Rayleigh with line-of-sight fading model, on which the constant-amplitude line-of-sight component is now allowed to randomly fluctuate. We discuss the key benefits of the fdRLoS fading model here formulated over the state of the art, and provide an analytical characterization of its chief probability functions. We analyze the effect of the fading parameters that define the model, and discuss their impact on the performance of wireless communication systems.
A realistic performance assessment of any wireless technology requires the use of a channel model that reflects its main characteristics. The independent and identically distributed Rayleigh fading channel model has been (and still is) the basis of most theoretical research on multiple antenna technologies in scattering environments. This letter shows that such a model is not physically appearing when using a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with rectangular geometry and provides an alternative physically feasible Rayleigh fading model that can be used as a baseline when evaluating RIS…
Recently, a generalization of the double-Rayleigh with line-of-sight channel fading model taking into account shadowing of the line-of-sight component has been proposed. In this research, a closed-form analysis of the average bit error rate for MPSK/MQAM modulations is performed. The derived solution is accompanied by proposed numerically efficient approximation and all possible asymptotic expressions that correspond to extreme channel parameters. Lastly, a numerical simulation was performed that demonstrated the correctness of the derived results.
The proposed research performs the capacity analysis of the wireless channel described by the fluctuating double-Rayleigh with the line-of-sight model. The closed-form analytical expressions for the conditional capacity (in the case of arbitrary noninteger fading parameter) and the ergodic capacity (in the case of the integer fading parameter) are derived in terms of the extended generalized bivariate Meijer G-function. The exact solutions are succeeded by the approximating expressions deduced for the cases of small and large ratios between the Rician K-factor and the fading parameter. The per…
We investigate the performance of a dual-hop intervehicular communications (IVC) system with relay selection strategy. We assume a generalized fading channel model, known as cascaded Rayleigh (also called n*Rayleigh), which involves the product of n independent Rayleigh random variables. This channel model provides a realistic description of IVC, in contrast to the conventional Rayleigh fading assumption, which is more suitable for cellular networks. Unlike existing works, which mainly consider double-Rayleigh fading channels (i.e, n = 2); our system model considers the general cascading order…
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) is a novel scheme where the information bits are conveyed through the subcarrier activation pattern (SAP) and the symbols on the active subcarriers. Unfortunately, OFDM-IM inherits the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem from the classical OFDM. The OFDMIM signal with high PAPR induces in-band distortion and out-of-band radiation when it passes through high power amplifier (HPA). There are attempts to reduce PAPR by adding dither signals in the idle subcarriers, where the dither signals can have various ampl…
This paper compares the sum rates and rate regions achieved by power-domain NOMA (non-orthogonal multiple access) and standard massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) techniques. We prove analytically that massive MIMO always outperforms NOMA in i.i.d.~Rayleigh fading channels, if a sufficient number of antennas are used at the base stations. The simulation results show that the crossing point occurs already when having 20-30 antennas, which is far less than what is considered for the next generation cellular networks.
Massive multiple-input multiple-output is a very important technology for future fifth-generation systems. However, massive massive multiple input multiple output systems are still limited because of pilot contamination, impacting the data rate due to the non-orthogonality of pilot sequences transmitted by users in the same cell to the neighboring cells. We propose a channel estimation with complete knowledge of large-scale fading by using an orthogonal pilot reuse sequence to eliminate PC in edge users with poor channel quality based on the estimation of large-scale fading and performance ana…
In this paper, we investigate a cell-free massive MIMO system with both access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs) equipped with multiple antennas over jointly-correlated Rayleigh fading channels. We study four uplink implementations, from fully centralized processing to fully distributed processing, and derive their achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expressions with minimum mean-squared error successive interference cancellation (MMSE-SIC) detectors and arbitrary combining schemes. Furthermore, the global and local MMSE combining schemes are derived based on full and local channel state …
We consider a hardware-impaired multi-cell Rician faded massive multi-input multi-output (mMIMO) system with two-layer pilot decontamination precoding, also known as large-scale fading precoding (LSFP). Each BS is equipped with a flexible dynamic analog-to-digital converter (ADC)/digital-to-analog converter (DAC) architecture and the user equipments (UEs) have low-resolution ADCs. Further, both BS and UEs have hardwareimpaired radio frequency chains. The dynamic ADC/DAC architecture allows us to vary the resolution of ADC/DAC connected to each BS antenna, and suitably choose them to maximize t…
Many-access channel (MnAC) model allows the number of users in the system and the number of active users to scale as a function of the blocklength and as such is suited for dynamic communication systems with massive number of users such as the Internet of Things. Existing MnAC models assume a priori knowledge of channel gains which is impractical since acquiring Channel State Information (CSI) for massive number of users can overwhelm the available radio resources. This paper incorporates Rayleigh fading effects to the MnAC model and derives an upper bound on the symmetric message-length capac…

Multi-dimensional (MD) mapping offers more flexibility in mapping design for bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) and potentially improves the bandwidth efficiency. However, for higher order signal constellations, finding suitable MD mappings is a very complicated task due to the large number of possible mappings. In this paper, a novel mapping method is introduced to construct efficient MD mappings to improve the error performance of BICM-ID over Rayleigh fading channels. We propose to break the MD mapping design problem into four distinct $2$-D mapping functions…
Impedance matching between receive antenna and front-end significantly impacts channel capacity in wireless channels. To implement capacity-optimal matching, the receiver must know the antenna impedance. But oftentimes this impedance varies with loading conditions in the antenna near-field. To mitigate this variation, several authors have proposed antenna impedance estimation techniques. However, the optimality of these techniques remains unclear. In this paper, we consider antenna impedance estimation at MISO receivers over correlated Rayleigh fading channels. We derive in closed-form the opt…
This paper analyzes the power imbalance issue in power-domain NOMA (PD-NOMA) in the presence of channel correlations, typically encountered on the downlink of cellular systems when the base station antennas have an insufficient separation. In a recent paper, the authors analyzed this issue for a typical uplink scenario with uncorrelated channels, and the study revealed an astounding result that the optimum in terms of average error probability is achieved when the user signals are perfectly balanced in terms of power as in multi-user MIMO with power control. This result led to some questioning…
We present a new approach to the statistical characterization of the second order scattering fading (SOSF) channel model, which greatly simplifies its analysis. Exploiting the unadvertised fact that the SOSF channel can be seen as a continuous mixture of Rician fading channels, we obtain expressions for its probability density function and cumulative density function that are numerically better-behaved than those available in the literature. Our approach allows for obtaining new results for the SOSF model, such as a closed-form expression for its moment-generating function, as well as the char…
This paper considers the large-scale fading precoding design for mitigating the pilot contamination in the downlink of multi-cell massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems. Rician fading with spatially correlated channels are considered where the line-of-sight (LOS) components of the channels are randomly phase-shifted in each coherence block. The large-scale fading precoding weights are designed based on maximizing the product of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) of the users, which provides a good balance between max-min fairness and sum rate maximization. The …
Consider an Internet-of-Things (IoT) scenario in which devices transmit sporadically using short packets with few pilot symbols. Each device transmits over a fading channel and is characterized by an amplifier with a unique non-linear transfer function. The number of pilots is generally insufficient to obtain an accurate estimate of the end-to-end channel, which includes the effects of fading and of the amplifier's distortion. This paper proposes to tackle this problem using meta-learning. Accordingly, pilots from previous IoT transmissions are used as meta-training in order to learn a demodul…
In time-varying fading channels, channel coefficients are estimated using pilot symbols that are transmitted every coherence interval. For channels with high Doppler spread, the rapid channel variations over time will require considerable bandwidth for pilot transmission, leading to poor throughput. In this paper, we propose a novel receiver architecture using deep recurrent neural networks (RNNs) that learns the channel variations and thereby reduces the number of pilot symbols required for channel estimation. Specifically, we design and train an RNN to learn the correlation in the time-varyi…
Highly coherent wave is favorable for applications in which phase retrieval is necessary, yet a high coherent wave is prone to encounter Rayleigh fading phenomenon as it passes through a medium of random scatters. As an exemplary case, phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) utilizes coherent interference of backscattering light along a fiber to achieve ultra-sensitive acoustic sensing, but sensing locations with fading won't be functional. Apart from the sensing domain, fading is also ubiquitous in optical imaging and wireless telecommunication, therefore it is of great int…
Unreliable fading wireless channels are the main challenge for strict performance guarantees in mobile communications. Diversity schemes including massive number of antennas, huge spectrum bands and multi-connectivity links are applied to improve the outage performance. The success of these approaches relies heavily on the joint distribution of the underlying fading channels. In this work, we consider the $\varepsilon$-outage capacity of slowly fading wireless diversity channels and provide lower and upper bounds for fixed marginal distributions of the individual channels. This answers the que…
This letter presents and analyzes orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based multi-carrier transmission for cell-free massive multi-input multi-output (CFmMIMO) over frequency-selective fading channels. Frequency-domain conjugate beamforming, pilot assignment, and user-specific resource allocation are proposed. CFmMIMO-OFDM is scalable to serve a massive number of users and is flexible to offer diverse data rates for heterogeneous applications.
This paper derives a novel pilot-aided phase and channel estimation algorithm for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with phase noise and quasi-static channel fading. Our novel approach allows, for the first time, carrier phase estimation and recovery to be performed before full channel estimation. This in turn enables the channel estimation to be calculated using the whole frame, significantly improving its accuracy. The proposed algorithm is a sequential combination of several linear algorithms, which greatly reduces the computational complexity. Moreover, we also derive, for the …

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a collection of Internet connected devices capable of interacting with the physical world and computer systems. It is estimated that the IoT will consist of approximately fifty billion devices by the year 2020. In addition to the sheer numbers, the need for IoT security is exacerbated by the fact that many of the edge devices employ weak to no encryption of the communication link. It has been estimated that almost 70% of IoT devices use no form of encryption. Previous research has suggested the use of Specific Emitter Identification (SEI), a physical layer techn…
Ambient backscatter communications is an emerging paradigm and a key enabler for pervasive connectivity of low-powered wireless devices. It is primarily beneficial in the Internet of things (IoT) and the situations where computing and connectivity capabilities expand to sensors and miniature devices that exchange data on a low power budget. The premise of the ambient backscatter communication is to build a network of devices capable of operating in a battery-free manner by means of smart networking, radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting and power management at the granularity of individual bi…
Minimizing the symbol error in the uplink of multi-user multiple input multiple output systems is important, because the symbol error affects the achieved signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and thereby the spectral efficiency of the system. Despite the vast literature available on minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers, previously proposed receivers for block fading channels do not minimize the symbol error in time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, we show that the true MMSE receiver structure does not only depend on the statistics of the CSI error, but also on t…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a critical technology for future fifth-generation (5G) systems. Reduced pilot contamination (PC) enhanced system performance, and reduced inter-cell interference and improved channel estimation. However, because the pilot sequence transmitted by users in a single cell to neighboring cells is not orthogonal, massive MIMO systems are still constrained. We propose channel evaluation using orthogonal pilot reuse sequences (PRS) and zero forced (ZF) pre-coding techniques to eliminate channel quality in end users with poor channel quality based on cha…
To provide the vast exploitation of the large number of antennas on massive multiple-input-multiple-output (M-MIMO), it is crucial to know as accurately as possible the channel state information in the base station. This knowledge is canonically acquired through channel estimation procedures conducted after a pilot signaling phase, which adopts the widely accepted time-division duplex scheme. However, the quality of channel estimation is very impacted either by pilot contamination or by spatial correlation of the channels. There are several models that strive to match the spatial correlation i…
Massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MaMIMO) multicasting has received significant attention over the last years. MaMIMO is a key enabler of 5G systems to achieve the extremely demanding data rates of upcoming services. Multicast in the physical layer is an efficient way of serving multiple users, simultaneously demanding the same service and sharing radio resources. This work proposes a subgrouping strategy of multicast users based on their spatial channel characteristics to improve the channel estimation and precoding processes. We employ max-min fairness (MMF) power allocation strategy t…
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a modulation technique that is dedicated to the high-speed mobility scenario. However, its transmission involves a two-dimensional convolution of the symbols of interest and the multipath fading channel, and it complicates the equalization. In addition to the high-complexity issue, the existing pilot pattern to estimate the unknown channel accurately requires large overhead to avoid the pilot being contaminated, which is spectrally inefficient. In this paper, we propose a receiver approach by the marriage of the OTFS and a large-scale antenna array, wh…
This paper considers the performance analysis of constructive interference (CI) precoding technique in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems with a finite constellation phase-shift keying (PSK) input alphabet. Firstly, analytical expressions for the moment generating function (MGF) and the average of the received signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) are derived. Then, based on the derived MGF expression the average symbol error probability (SEP) for the CI precoder with PSK signaling is calculated. In this regard, new exact and very accurate asymptotic approximation for the averag…
