Inspired by the recent work of Lu and O'Rourke, we study the $a_i$-invariants of (symbolic) powers of some graded ideals. The first scenario is when $I$ and $J$ are two graded ideals in two distinct polynomial rings $R$ and $S$ over a common field $\mathbb{K}$. We study the $a_i$-invariants of the powers of the fiber product via the corresponding knowledge of $I$ and $J$. The second scenario is when $I_Δ$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a $k$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ with $k\ge 2$. We investigate the $a_i$-invariants of the symbolic powers of $I_Δ$.
In this thesis we are interested in describing some homological invariants of certain classes of monomial ideals. We will pay attention to the squarefree and non-squarefree lexsegment ideals.
We compute some algebraic invariants (e.g. depth, Castelnuovo - Mumford regularity) for a special class of monomial ideals, namely the ideals of mixed products. As a consequence, we characterize the Cohen-Macaulay ideals of mixed products.
We express the Partial regularities and $a^*$-invariants of a Borel type ideal in terms of its irredundant irreducible decomposition. In addition we consider the behaviours of those invariants under intersections and sums.
We investigate the presence of Cohen-Macaulay ideals in invariant rings and show that an ideal of an invariant ring corresponding to a modular representation of a $p$-group is not Cohen-Macaulay unless the invariant ring itself is. As an intermediate result, we obtain that non-Cohen-Macaulay factorial rings cannot contain Cohen-Macaulay ideals. For modular cyclic groups of prime order, we show that the quotient of the invariant ring modulo the transfer ideal is always Cohen-Macaulay, extending a result of Fleischmann.
We introduce an invariant, associated to a coherent sheaf over a projective morphism of schemes, which controls when sheaf cohomology can be passed through the given morphism. We then use this invariant to estimate the stability indexes of the regularity and a*-invariant of powers of homogeneous ideals.
We study chains of nonzero edge ideals that are invariant under the action of the monoid $\mathrm{Inc}$ of increasing functions on the positive integers. We prove that the sequence of Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of ideals in such a chain is eventually constant with limit either 2 or 3, and we determine explicitly when the constancy behaviour sets in. This provides further evidence to a conjecture on the asymptotic linearity of the regularity of $\mathrm{Inc}$-invariant chains of homogeneous ideals. The proofs reveal unexpected combinatorial properties of $\mathrm{Inc}$-invariant chains of …
Let $I$ be an ideal whose symbolic Rees algebra is Noetherian. For $m \geq 1$, the $m$-th symbolic defect, sdefect$(I,m)$, of $I$ is defined to be the minimal number of generators of the module $\frac{I^{(m)}}{I^m}$. We prove that sdefect$(I,m)$ is eventually quasi-polynomial as a function in $m$. We compute the symbolic defect explicitly for certain monomial ideals arising from graphs, termed cover ideals. We go on to give a formula for the Waldschmidt constant, an asymptotic invariant measuring the growth of the degrees of generators of symbolic powers, for ideals whose symbolic Rees algebra…
Ideals generated by pfaffians are of interest in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, as well as in combinatorics. In this article we compute multiplicity and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of pfaffian ideals of ladders. We give explicit formulas for some families of ideals, and indicate a procedure that allows to recursively compute the invariants of any pfaffian ideal of ladder. Our approach makes an essential use of liaison theory.
Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with a canonical module. We consider Auslander's (higher) delta invariants of powers of certain ideals of R. Firstly, we shall provide some conditions for an ideal to be a parameter ideal in terms of delta invarints. As an application of this result, we give upper bounds for orders of Ulrich ideals of R when R has Gorenstein punctured spectrum. Secondly, we extend the definition of indices to the ideal case, and generalize the result of Avramov-Buchweitz-Iyengar-Miller on the relationship between the index and regularity.
Let $R$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, $I$ a strongly Cohen-Macaulay ideal of $R$. We show that $R/{\rm Ann}_R(I)$ is a maximal Cohen-Macaulay $R$-module by means of the delta-invariant. Also it is shown that there exists a Cohen-Macaulay ideal $J$ of $R$ such that the $δ_{R/J}$-invariant of all Koszul homologies of $R$ with respect $I$ is zero.
We study the generic initial ideals (gin) of certain ideals that arise in modular invariant theory. For all cases an explicit generating set is known we calculate the generic initial ideal of the Hilbert ideal of a cyclic group of prime order for all monomial orders. We also clarify the Klein four group and note that its Hilbert ideals are Borel fixed with certain orderings of the variables. In all situations we consider, there is a monomial order such that the gin of the Hilbert ideal is equal to its initial ideal. Along the way we show that gin respects a permutation of the variables in the …
In this paper, we introduce an invariant of Cohen-Macaulay local rings in terms of the reduction number of canonical ideals. The invariant can be defined in arbitrary Cohen-Macaulay rings and it measures how close to being Gorenstein. First, we clarify the relation between almost Gorenstein rings and nearly Gorenstein rings by using the invariant in dimension one. We next characterize the idealization of trace ideals over Gorenstein rings in terms of the invariant. It provides better prospects for a result of the almost Gorenstein property of idealization.
Let S be a polynomial algebra over a field. If I is the edge ideal of a perfect semiregular tree, then we give precise formulas for values of depth, Stanley depth, projective dimension, regularity and Krull dimension of S/I.
Let $k$ be a field and $G \subseteq Gl_n(k)$ be a finite group with $|G|^{-1} \in k$. Let $G$ act linearly on $A = k[X_1, \ldots, X_n]$ and let $A^G$ be the ring of invariant's. Suppose there does not exist any non-trivial one-dimensional representation of $G$ over $k$. Then we show that if $Q$ is a $G$-invariant homogeneous ideal of $A$ such that $A/Q$ is a Gorenstein ring then $A^G/Q^G$ is also a Gorenstein ring.
We introduce the combinatorial Lyubeznik resolution of monomial ideals. We prove that this resolution is isomorphic to the usual Lyubezbnik resolution. As an application, we give a combinatorial method to determine if an ideal is a Lyubeznik ideal. Furthermore, the minimality of the Lyubeznik resolution is characterized and we classify all the Lyubeznik symbols using combinatorial criteria. We get a combinatorial expression for the projective dimension, the length of Lyubeznik, and the arithmetical rank of a monomial ideal. We define the Lyubeznik totally ideals as those ideals that yield a mi…
The main purpose of this paper is to develop new algorithms for computing invariant rings in a general setting. This includes invariants of nonreductive groups but also of groups acting on algebras over certain rings. In particular, we present an algorithm for computing invariants of a finite group acting on a finitely generated algebra over a Euclidean ring. This may be viewed as a first step in "computational arithmetic invariant theory." As a special case, the algorithm can compute multiplicative invariant rings. Other algorithms are applicable to nonreductive groups and are, when applied t…
We introduce a family of squarefree monomial ideals associated to finite simple graphs, whose monomial generators correspond to closed neighborhood of vertices of the underlying graph. Any such ideal is called the closed neighborhood ideal of the graph. We study some algebraic invariants of these ideals like Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and projective dimension and present some combinatorial descriptions for these invariants in terms of graph invariants.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce new invariants of Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Our focus is the class of Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit a canonical ideal. Attached to each such ring R with a canonical ideal C, there are integers--the type of R, the reduction number of C--that provide valuable metrics to express the deviation of R from being a Gorenstein ring. We enlarge this list with other integers--the roots of R and several canonical degrees. The latter are multiplicity based functions of the Rees algebra of C.
We introduce two new invariants of a Noetherian (standard graded) local ring $(R, \mathfrak m)$ that measure the number of generators of certain kinds of reductions of $\mathfrak m,$ and we study their properties. Explicitly, we consider the minimum among the number of generators of ideals $I$ such that either $I^2 = \mathfrak m^2$ or $I \supseteq \mathfrak m^2$ holds. We investigate subsequently the case that $R$ is the quotient of a polynomial ring $k[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ by an ideal $I$ generated by homogeneous quadratic forms, and we compute these invariants. We devote specific attention to t…
We study chains of lattice ideals that are invariant under a symmetric group action. In our setting, the ambient rings for these ideals are polynomial rings which are increasing in (Krull) dimension. Thus, these chains will fail to stabilize in the traditional commutative algebra sense. However, we prove a theorem which says that "up to the action of the group", these chains locally stabilize. We also give an algorithm, which we have implemented in software, for explicitly constructing these stabilization generators for a family of Laurent toric ideals involved in applications to algebraic sta…
Let $G$ be a simple graph and $I(G)$ be its edge ideal. In this article, we study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of symbolic powers of edge ideals of join of graphs. As a consequence, we prove Minh's conjecture for wheel graphs, complete multipartite graphs, and a subclass of co-chordal graphs. We obtain a class of graphs whose edge ideals have regularity three. By constructing graphs, we prove that the multiplicity of edge ideals of graphs is independent from the depth, dimension, regularity, and degree of $h$-polynomial. Also, we demonstrate that the depth of edge ideals of graphs is ind…
We continue the study of intersection algebras $\mathcal B = \mathcal B_R(I, J)$ of two ideals $I, J$ in a commutative Noetherian ring $R$. In particular, we exploit the semigroup ring and toric structures in order to calculate various invariants of the intersection algebra when $R$ is a polynomial ring over a field and $I,J$ are principal monomial ideals. Specifically, we calculate the $F$-signature, divisor class group, and Hilbert-Samuel and Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities, sometimes restricting to certain cases in order to obtain explicit formulæ. This provides a new class of rings where formu…
Let $G$ be a graph and $I=I(G)$ be its edge ideal. When $G$ is the clique sum of two different length odd cycles joined at single vertex then we give an explicit description of the symbolic powers of $I$ and compute the Waldschmidt constant. When $G$ is complete graph then we describe the generators of the symbolic powers of $I$ and compute the Waldschmidt constant and the resurgence of $I$. Moreover for complete graph we prove that the Castelnuvo-Mumford regularity of the symbolic powers and ordinary powers of the edge ideal coincide.
Let $Δ$ be an one-dimensional simplicial complex on $\{1,2,\ldots,s\}$ and $S$ the polynomial ring $K[x_1,\ldots,x_s]$ over a field $K$. The explicit formula for $a_0(S/I_Δ^n)$ is presented when $\mathrm{girth}(Δ)\geq 4$. If $\mathrm{girth}(Δ)=3$ we characterize the simplicial complexes $Δ$ for which $a_0(S/I_Δ^n)=3n-1$ or $3n-2$.
Let $R$ be a $d$-dimensional standard graded ring over an Artin local ring. Let $M$ be the unique maximal homogeneous ideal of $R.$ Let $h^i(R)_n$ denote the length of $H^i_M(R)_n$, i.e. the nth graded component of the ith local cohomology module of R with respect to M. Define the Eisenbud-Goto invariant of $R$ to be the number $$EG(R)= \sum_{q=0}^{d-1} \binom{d-1}{q} h^q(R)_{1-q}.$$ We prove that the $a$-invariant of $R$ satisfies $$ a(R) \leq e(R)-length(R_1)+(d-1)(length(R_0)-1)+ EG(R).$$ Using this bound we get upper bounds for the reduction number of an $m$-primary ideal of a Cohen-Macaul…
A Turaev-Viro invariant is a state sum, i.e., a polynomial that can be read off from a special spine or a triangulation of a compact 3-manifold. If the polynomial is evaluated at the solution of a certain system of polynomial equations (Biedenharn-Elliott equations) then the result is a homeomorphism invariant of the manifold (``numerical Turaev-Viro invariant''). The equation system defines an ideal, and actually the coset of the polynomial with respect to that ideal is a homeomorphism invariant as well (``ideal Turaev-Viro invariant''). It is clear that ideal Turaev-Viro invariants are at le…
We define cone structures and asymptotic invariants for multigraded systems of ideals, and show that essentially the only restrictions on such structures is convexity, which is imposed formally.
In this work we introduce a new set of invariants associated to the linear strands of a minimal free resolution of a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded ideal $I\subseteq R=\Bbbk[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$. We also prove that these invariants satisfy some properties analogous to those of Lyubeznik numbers of local rings. In particular, they satisfy a consecutiveness property that we prove first for Lyubeznik numbers. For the case of squarefree monomial ideals we get more insight on the relation between Lyubeznik numbers and the linear strands of their associated Alexander dual ideals. Finally, we prove that Lyubeznik…
The acquisition of the defining equations of Rees algebras is a natural way to study these algebras and allows certain invariants and properties to be deduced. In this paper, we consider Rees algebras of codimension 2 perfect ideals of hypersurface rings and produce a minimal generating set for their defining ideals. Then, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we study Rees algebras of modules with projective dimension one over hypersurface rings. We describe the defining ideal of such algebras and determine Cohen-Macaulayness and other invariants.
Let $G$ be a finite group, and $V$ a finite dimensional vector space over a field $k$ of characteristic dividing the order of $G$. Let $H \leq G$. The transfer map $k[V]^H \rightarrow k[V]^G$ is an important feature of modular invariant theory. Its image is called a transfer ideal $I^G_H$ of $k[V]^G$, and this ideal, along with the quotients $k[V]^G/I^G_H$ are widely studied. In this article we study $k[V]^G/I$, where $I$ is any sum of transfer ideals. Our main result gives an explicit regular sequence of length $\dim(V^G)$ in $k[V]^G/I$ when $G$ is a $p$-group. We identify situations where th…

For standard graded Artinian $K$-algebras defined by componentwise linear ideals and Gotzmann ideals, we give conditions for the weak Lefschetz property in terms of numerical invariants of the defining ideals.
We demonstrate that the ring of invariants for the natural action of a subgroup G of GL_n(F_q) on a polynomial ring R=K[X_1,...,X_n] need not be F-pure. In these examples G is the symplectic group over a finite field, and the invariant subrings are always complete intersections by the work of Carlisle and Kropholler. These examples are of special interest from the point of view of studying the Frobenius closures and tight closures of ideals as contractions from certain extension rings: they provide instances when the socle element modulo an ideal generated by a system of parameters is forced i…
This paper gives an explicit formula for the multiplier ideals, and consequently for the log canonical thresholds, of any GL(V)xGL(W)-invariant ideal in the symmetric algebra S of the tensor product of V with the dual of W, where V and W are vector spaces over a field of characteristic 0. This characterization is done in terms of a polytope constructed from the set of Young diagrams corresponding to the Schur modules generating the ideal. Our approach consists in computing the test ideals of some invariant ideals of S in positive characteristic: Namely, we will compute the test ideals (and so …
We study generalized symbolic powers and form ideals of powers of ideals and compare their growth with the growth of ordinary powers, and we discuss the question of when the graded rings attached to symbolic powers or to form ideals of powers are finitely generated.
In this paper, we define (im, reg)-invariant extension of graphs and propose a new approach for Nevo and Peeva's conjecture which said that for any gap-free graph $G$ with $reg(I(G)) = 3$ and for any $k \geq 2$, $I(G)^k$ has a linear resolution. Moreover, we consider new conjectures related to the regularity of powers of edge ideals of gap-free graphs.
Continuing a well established tradition of associating convex bodies to monomial ideals, we initiate a program to construct asymptotic Newton polyhedra from decompositions of monomial ideals. This is achieved by forming a graded family of ideals based on a given decomposition. We term these graded families powers since they generalize the notions of ordinary and symbolic powers. Asymptotic invariants for these graded families are expressed as solutions to linear optimization problems on the respective convex bodies. This allows to establish a lower bound on the Waldschmidt constant of a monomi…
Statistical models of evolution are algebraic varieties in the space of joint probability distributions on the leaf colorations of a phylogenetic tree. The phylogenetic invariants of a model are the polynomials which vanish on the variety. Several widely used models for biological sequences have transition matrices that can be diagonalized by means of the Fourier transform of an abelian group. Their phylogenetic invariants form a toric ideal in the Fourier coordinates. We determine generators and Gröbner bases for these toric ideals. For the Jukes-Cantor and Kimura models on a binary tree, our…
We define the notion of a power stable ideal in a polynomial ring $ R[X]$ over an integral domain $ R $. It is proved that a maximal ideal $χ$ $ M $ in $ R[X]$ is power stable if and only if $ P^t $ is $ P$- primary for all $ t\geq 1 $ for the prime ideal $ P = M \cap R $. Using this we prove that for a Hilbert domain $R$ any radical ideal in $R[X]$ which is a finite intersection G-ideals is power stable. Further, we prove that if $ R $ is a Noetherian integral domain of dimension 1 then any radical ideal in $ R[X] $ is power stable. Finally, it is proved that if every ideal in $ R[X]$ is powe…
We address the problem of studying the toric ideals of phylogenetic invariants for a general group-based model on an arbitrary claw tree. We focus on the group $\mathbb Z_2$ and choose a natural recursive approach that extends to other groups. The study of the lattice associated with each phylogenetic ideal produces a list of circuits that generate the corresponding lattice ideal. In addition, we describe explicitly a quadratic lexicographic Gröbner basis of the toric ideal of invariants for the claw tree on an arbitrary number of leaves. Combined with a result of Sturmfels and Sullivant, this…
We consider powers of lexsegment ideals with a linear resolution (equivalently, with linear quotients) which are not completely lexsegment ideals. We give a complete description of their minimal graded free resolution.
Generalized Frobenius powers of an ideal were introduced in work of Hernández, Teixeira, and Witt as characteristic-dependent analogs of test ideals. However, little is known about the Frobenius powers and critical exponents of specific ideals, even in the monomial case. We describe an algorithm to compute the critical exponents of monomial ideals and use this algorithm to prove some results about their Frobenius powers and critical exponents. Rather than using test ideals, our algorithm uses techniques from linear optimization.
We introduce the concept of strong persistence and show that it implies persistence regarding the associated prime ideals of the powers of an ideal. We also show that strong persistence is equivalent to a condition on power of ideals studied by Ratliff. Furthermore, we give an upper bound for the depth of powers of monomial ideals in terms of their linear relation graph, and apply this to show that the index of depth stability and the index of stability for the associated prime ideals of polymatroidal ideals is bounded by their analytic spread.
A notion of sectional regularity for a homogeneous ideal $I$, which measures the regularity of its generic sections with respect to linear spaces of various dimensions, is introduced. It is related to axial constants defined as the intercepts on the coordinate axes of the set of exponents of monomials in the reverse lexicographic generic initial ideal of $I$. The equivalence of these notions and several other homological and ideal-theoretic invariants is shown. It is also established that these equivalent invariants grow linearly for the family of powers of a given ideal.
