In this paper, we define (im, reg)-invariant extension of graphs and propose a new approach for Nevo and Peeva's conjecture which said that for any gap-free graph $G$ with $reg(I(G)) = 3$ and for any $k \geq 2$, $I(G)^k$ has a linear resolution.
Moreover, we consider new conjectures related to the regularity of powers of edge ideals of gap-free graphs.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is a measure of algebraic complexity of an ideal. Regularity of monomial ideals can be investigated combinatorially. We use a simple graph decomposition and results from structural graph theory to prove, improve and generalize many of the known bounds on regularity of quadratic square-free monomial ideals.
We study join-meet ideals associated with modular non-distributive lattices. We give a lower bound for the regularity and show that they are not linearly related.
We obtain an improved lower bound for the regularity of the binomial edge ideals of trees. We prove an upper bound for the regularity of the binomial edge ideals of certain subclass of block-graphs. As a consequence we obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for the regularity of binomial edge ideals of a class of trees called lobsters. We also obtain precise expressions for the regularities of binomial edge ideals of certain classes of trees and block graphs.
We give a lower bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals of block graphs by computing the two distinguished extremal Betti numbers of a new family of block graphs, called flower graphs. Moreover, we present a linear time algorithm to compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and Krull dimension of binomial edge ideals of block graphs.
We define the Eulerian ideal of a $k$-uniform hypergraph and study its degree and Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity. The main tool is a Gröbner basis of the ideal obtained combinatorially from the hypergraph. We define the notion of parity join in a hypergraph and show that the regularity of the Eulerian ideal is equal to the maximum cardinality of such a set of edges. The formula for the degree involves the cardinality of the set of sets of vertices, $T$, that admit a $T$-join. We compute the degree and regularity explicity in the cases of a complete $k$-partite hypergraph and a complete hyperg…
In this paper we introduce the concept of clique disjoint edge sets in graphs. Then, for a graph $G$, we define the invariant $η(G)$ as the maximum size of a clique disjoint edge set in $G$. We show that the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of $G$ is bounded above by $η(G)$. This, in particular, settles a conjecture on the regularity of binomial edge ideals in full generality.
We study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of powers of edge ideals. We prove that if G is a bipartite graph, then reg(I(G)^s) \leq 2s + reg I(G) - 2 for all s \geq 2, which is the best possible upper bound for any s. Suspension plays a key role in proof of the base case s =2.
In this paper we use polarization to study the behavior of the depth and regularity of a monomial ideal $I$, locally at a variable $x_i$, when we lower the degree of all the highest powers of the variable $x_i$ occurring in the minimal generating set of $I$, and examine the depth and regularity of powers of edge ideals of clutters using combinatorial optimization techniques. If $I$ is the edge ideal of an unmixed clutter with the max-flow min-cut property, we show that the powers of $I$ have non-increasing depth and non-decreasing regularity. In particular edge ideals of unmixed bipartite grap…
We survey recent studies on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of edge ideals of graphs and their powers. Our focus is on bounds and exact values of $\text{reg} I(G)$ and the asymptotic linear function $\text{reg} I(G)^q$, for $q \geq 1,$ in terms of combinatorial data of the given graph $G.$
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices and $J_G$ denote the corresponding binomial edge ideal in $S = K[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1,\ldots, y_n].$ We prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $J_G$ is bounded above by $c(G)+1$ when $G$ is a quasi-block graph or semi-block graph. We give another proof of Saeedi Madani-Kiani regularity upper bound conjecture for chordal graphs. We obtain the regularity of binomial edge ideals of Jahangir graphs. Later, we establish a sufficient condition for Hibi-Matsuda conjecture to be true.
Let $I$ and $J$ be edge ideals in a polynomial ring $R = \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ with $I \subseteq J$. In this paper, we obtain a general upper and lower bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $IJ$ in terms of certain invariants associated with $I$ and $J$. Using these results, we explicitly compute the regularity of $IJ$ for several classes of edge ideals. Let $J_1,\ldots,J_d$ be edge ideals in a polynomial ring $R$ with $J_1 \subseteq \cdots \subseteq J_d$. Finally, we compute the precise expression for the regularity of $J_1 J_2\cdots J_d$ when $d \in \{3,4\}$ and $J_d$ is the …
Let $G$ be a unicyclic graph with edge ideal $I(G)$. For any integer $s\geq 1$, we denote the $s$-th symbolic power of $I(G)$ by $I(G)^{(s)}$. It is shown that ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{(s)})={\rm reg}(I(G)^s)$, for every $s\geq 1$.
For a polynomial ring S in n variables, we consider the natural action of the symmetric group S_n on S by permuting the variables. For an S_n-invariant monomial ideal I in S and j >= 0, we give an explicit recipe for computing the modules Ext^j(S/I,S), and use this to describe the projective dimension and regularity of I. We classify the S_n-invariant monomial ideals that have a linear free resolution, and also characterize those which are Cohen-Macaulay. We then consider two settings for analyzing the asymptotic behavior of regularity: one where we look at powers of a fixed ideal I, and anoth…
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph and $I(G)$ denote the corresponding edge ideal. In this paper, we obtain upper bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $I(G)^q$ in terms of certain combinatorial invariants associated with $G$. We also prove a weaker version of a conjecture by Alilooee, Banerjee, Beyarslan and Hà on an upper bound for the regularity of $I(G)^q$ and we prove the conjectured upper bound for the class of vertex decomposable graphs. Using these results, we explicitly compute the regularity of $I(G)^q$ for several classes of graphs.
Let $I = I(G)$ be the edge ideal of a graph $G$. We give various general upper bounds for the regularity function $\text{reg} I^s$, for $s \ge 1$, addressing a conjecture made by the authors and Alilooee. When $G$ is a gap-free graph and locally of regularity 2, we show that $\text{reg} I^s = 2s$ for all $s \ge 2$. This is a slightly weaker version of a conjecture of Nevo and Peeva. Our method is to investigate the regularity function $\text{reg}I^s$, for $s \ge 1$, via local information of $I$.
Let $D$ be a weighted oriented graph with the underlying graph $G$ and $I(D), I(G) $ be the edge ideals corresponding to $D$ and $G$ respectively. We show that the regularity of edge ideal of a certain class of weighted oriented graph remains same even after adding certain kind of new edges to it. We also establish the relationship between the regularity of edge ideal of weighted oriented path and cycle with the regularity of edge ideal of their underlying graph when vertices of $V^+$ are sinks.
In this paper we prove the conjectured upper bound for Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals posed in [23], in the case of chordal graphs. Indeed, we show that the regularity of any chordal graph G is bounded above by the number of maximal cliques of G, denoted by c(G). Moreover, we classify all chordal graphs G for which L(G) = c(G), where L(G) is the sum of the lengths of longest induced paths of connected components of G. We call such graphs strongly interval graphs. Moreover, we show that the regularity of a strongly interval graph G coincides with L(G) as well as c(G).
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph and $I=I(G)$ be its edge ideal. The aim of this note is to investigate different aspects of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$ of $I$. We compute its regularity and the universal Gröbner basis of its defining equations; interestingly, both of them are described in terms of the combinatorics of $G$. We apply these ideas to study the regularity of the powers of $I$. For any $s \ge \text{match}(G)+\lvert E(G) \rvert +1$ we prove that $\text{reg}(I^{s+1})=\text{reg}(I^s)+2$.
For any two integers $d,r \geq 1$, we show that there exists an edge ideal $I(G)$ such that the ${\rm reg}\left(R/I(G)\right)$, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $R/I(G)$, is $r$, and ${\rm deg} (h_{R/I(G)}(t))$, the degree of the $h$-polynomial of $R/I(G)$, is $d$. Additionally, if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices, we show that ${\rm reg}\left(R/I(G)\right) + {\rm deg} (h_{R/I(G)}(t)) \leq n$.
We study the relationship between depth and regularity of a homogeneous ideal I and those of (I,f) and I:f, where f is a linear form or a monomial. Our results has several interesting consequences on depth and regularity of edge ideals of hypegraphs and of powers of ideals.
Assume that $G$ is a graph with edge ideal $I(G)$. For every integer $s\geq 1$, we denote the squarefree part of the $s$-th symbolic power of $I(G)$ by $I(G)^{\{s\}}$. We determine an upper bound for the regularity of $I(G)^{\{s\}}$ when $G$ is a chordal graph. If $G$ is a Cameron-Walker graphs, we compute ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{\{s\}}$ in terms of the induced matching number of $G$. Moreover, for any graph $G$, we provide sharp upper bounds for ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{\{2\}})$ and ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{\{3\}})$.
A Cameron-Walker graph is a graph for which the matching number and the induced matching number are the same. Assume that $G$ is a Cameron-Walker graph with edge ideal $I(G)$, and let $\ind-match(G)$ be the induced matching number of $G$. It is shown that for every integer $s\geq 1$, we have the equality ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{(s)})=2s+\ind-match(G)-1$, where $I(G)^{(s)}$ denotes the $s$-th symbolic power of $I(G)$.
We determine the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals of complement reducible graphs (cographs). For cographs with $n$ vertices the maximum regularity grows as $2n/3$. We also bound the regularity by graph theoretic invariants and construct a family of counterexamples to a conjecture of Hibi and Matsuda.
