A set $S$ of vertices in $G$ is a semitotal dominating set of $G$ if it is a dominating set of $G$ and every vertex in $S$ is within distance $2$ of another vertex of $S$. The \emph{semitotal domination number}, $γ_{t2}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a semitotal dominating set of $G$. The \emph{semitotal domination multisubdivision number} of a graph $G$, $msd_{γ_{t2}}(G)$, is the minimum positive integer $k$ such that there exists an edge which must be subdivided $k$ times to increase the semitotal domination number of $G$. In this paper, we show that $msd_{γ_{t2}}(G)\leq 3$ for any graph $G$ of order at least $3$, we also determine the semitotal domination multisubdivision number for some classes of graphs and characterize trees $T$ with $msd_{γ_{t2}}(T)=3$. On the other hand, we know that $γ_{t2}(G)$ is a parameter that is squeezed between domination number, $γ(G)$ and total domination number, $γ_t(G)$, so for any tree $T$, we investigate the ratios $\frac{γ_{t2}(T)}{γ(T)}$ and $\frac{γ_t(T)}{γ_{t2}(T)}$, and present the constructive characterizations of the families of trees achieving the upper bounds.
A set $D$ of vertices in an isolate-free graph $G$ is a semitotal dominating set of $G$ if $D$ is a dominating set of $G$ and every vertex in $D$ is within distance $2$ from another vertex of $D$.The semitotal domination number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a semitotal dominating set of $G$ and is denoted by $γ_{t2}(G)$. In this paper after computation of semitotal domination number of specific graphs, we count the number of this kind of dominating sets of arbitrary size in some graphs.
In this paper, we consider the problem of reducing the semitotal domination number of a given graph by contracting $k$ edges, for some fixed $k \geq 1$. We show that this can always be done with at most 3 edge contractions and further characterise those graphs requiring 1, 2 or 3 edge contractions, respectively, to decrease their semitotal domination number. We then study the complexity of the problem for $k=1$ and obtain in particular a complete complexity dichotomy for monogenic classes.
In a graph $G=(V,E)$ with no isolated vertex, a dominating set $D \subseteq V$, is called a semitotal dominating set if for every vertex $u \in D$ there is another vertex $v \in D$, such that distance between $u$ and $v$ is at most two in $G$. Given a graph $G=(V,E)$ without isolated vertices, the Minimum Semitotal Domination problem is to find a minimum cardinality semitotal dominating set of $G$. The semitotal domination number, denoted by $γ_{t2}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a semitotal dominating set of $G$. The decision version of the problem remains NP-complete even when restricted…

Recently, Haynes, Hedetniemi and Henning published the book Topics in Domination in Graphs, which comprises 16 contributions that present advanced topics in graph domination, featuring open problems, modern techniques, and recent results. One of these contributions is the chapter Multiple Domination, by Hansberg and Volkmann, where they put into context all relevant research results on multiple domination that have been found up to 2020. In this note, we show how to improve some results on double domination that are included in the book.
Let $γ(G)$ and $i(G)$ be the domination number and the independent domination number of $G$, respectively. Rad and Volkmann posted a conjecture that $i(G)/ γ(G) \leq Δ(G)/2$ for any graph $G$, where $Δ(G)$ is its maximum degree (See \cite{5}: N.J. Rad, L. Volkmann, A note on the independent domination number in graphs. Discrete Appl. Math. 161(2013) 3087--3089). In this work, we verify the conjecture for bipartite graphs. Several graph classes attaining the extremal bound and graphs containing odd cycles with the ratio larger than $Δ(G)/2$ are provided as well.
The upper and lower Nordhaus-Gaddum bounds over all graphs for the power domination number follow from known bounds on the domination number and examples. In this note we improve the upper sum bound for the power domination number substantially for graphs having the property that both the graph and its complement must be connected. For these graphs, our bound is tight and is also significantly better than the corresponding bound for domination number. We also improve the product upper bound for the power domination number for graphs with certain properties.
Let $G$ be a simple and finite graph without isolated vertices. In this paper we introduce and study a new degree sequence derived invariant called the \emph{sub-total domination number}, denoted $\sub_t(G)$. In particular, we show that $\sub_t(G)$ serves as a lower bound on $γ_t(G)$, where $γ_t(G)$ denotes the heavily studied \emph{total domination number} of $G$.
In a graph $G$, a vertex dominates itself and its neighbours. A set $D\subseteq V(G)$ is said to be a $k$-tuple dominating set of $G$ if $D$ dominates every vertex of $G$ at least $k$ times. The minimum cardinality among all $k$-tuple dominating sets is the $k$-tuple domination number of $G$. In this paper, we provide new bounds on this parameter. Some of these bounds generalize other ones that have been given for the case $k=2$. In addition, we improve two well-known lower bounds on the $k$-tuple domination number.
A subset $D$ of the vertex set $V$ of a graph $G$ is called an $[1,k]$-dominating set if every vertex from $V-D$ is adjacent to at least one vertex and at most $k$ vertices of $D$. A $[1,k]$-dominating set with the minimum number of vertices is called a $γ_{[1,k]}$-set and the number of its vertices is the $[1,k]$-domination number $γ_{[1,k]}(G)$ of $G$. In this short note we show that the decision problem whether $γ_{[1,k]}(G)=n$ is an $NP$-hard problem, even for bipartite graphs. Also, a simple construction of a bipartite graph $G$ of order $n$ satisfying $γ_{[1,k]}(G)=n$ is given for every …
For a graph $G$, the $γ$-graph of $G$, $G(γ)$, is the graph whose vertices correspond to the minimum dominating sets of $G$, and where two vertices of $G(γ)$ are adjacent if and only if their corresponding dominating sets in $G$ differ by exactly two adjacent vertices. In this paper, we present several variations of the $γ$-graph including those using identifying codes, locating-domination, total-domination, paired-domination, and the upper-domination number. For each, we show that for any graph $H$, there exist infinitely many graphs whose $γ$-graph variant is isomorphic to $H$.
A subset $D\subseteq V(G)$ is called a $k$-distance dominating set of $G$ if every vertex in $V(G)\setminus D$ is within distance $k$ from some vertex of $D$. The minimum cardinality among all $k$-distance dominating sets of $G$ is called the $k$-distance domination number of $G$. In this note we give upper bound on the $k$-distance domination number of a connected bipartite graph and improve some results have been given like Theorem 2.1 and 2,7 in [Tian and Xu, A note on distance domination of graphs, Australian Journal of Combinatorics, 43 (2009), 181-190].
The $k$-rainbow independent domination number of a graph $G$, denoted $γ_{\rm rik}(G)$, is the cardinality of a smallest set consisting of two vertex-disjoint independent sets $V_1$ and $V_2$ for which every vertex in $V(G)\setminus (V_1\cup V_2)$ has neighbors in both $V_1$ and $V_2$. This domination invariant was proposed by {Š}umenjak, Rall and Tepeh in (Applied Mathematics and Computation 333(15), 2018: 353-361), which allows to reduce the problem of computing the independent domination number of the generalized prism $G {\Box} K_k$ to an integer labeling problem on $G$. They proved a Nord…
Given a graph $G$, a dominating set $D$ is a set of vertices such that any vertex in $G$ has at least one neighbor (or possibly itself) in $D$. A ${k}$-dominating multiset $D_k$ is a multiset of vertices such that any vertex in $G$ has at least $k$ vertices from its closed neighborhood in $D_k$ when counted with multiplicity. In this paper, we utilize the approach developed by Clark and Suen (2000) and properties of binary matrices to prove a "Vizing-like" inequality on minimum ${k}$-dominating multisets of graphs $G,H$ and the Cartesian product graph $G \Box H$. Specifically, denoting the siz…
Let $γ(G)$ and $β(G)$ denote the domination number and the covering number of a graph $G$, respectively. A connected non-trivial graph $G$ is said to be $γβ$-{perfect} if $γ(H)=β(H)$ for every non-trivial induced connected subgraph $H$ of $G$. In this note we present an elementary proof of a characterization of the $γβ$-perfect graphs.
A set $D$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a total dominating set if every vertex of $G$ is adjacent to at least one vertex of $D$. The total domination number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of any total dominating set of $G$ and is denoted by $γ_t(G)$. The total dominating set $D$ is called a total co-independent dominating set if $V(G)\setminus D$ is an independent set and has at least one vertex. The minimum cardinality of any total co-independent dominating set is denoted by $γ_{t,coi}(G)$. In this paper, we show that, for any tree $T$ of order $n$ and diameter at least three, $n-β(T)\leq …
We study relations between diameter $D(G)$, domination number $γ(G)$, independence number $α(G)$ and cop number $c(G)$ of a connected graph $G$, showing (i.) $c(G) \leq α(G)-\lfloor \frac{D(G)-3}{2} \rfloor$, and (ii.) $c(G) \leq γ(G) - \frac{D(G)}{3} + O (\sqrt{D(G)})$.
Let $p$ be a positive integer and $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph. A subset $D\subseteq V$ is a $p$-dominating set if each vertex not in $D$ has at least $p$ neighbors in $D$. The $p$-domination number $\g_p(G)$ is the minimum cardinality among all $p$-dominating sets of $G$. The $p$-bondage number $b_p(G)$ is the cardinality of a smallest set of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with a $p$-domination number greater than the $p$-domination number of $G$. In this note we determine the 2-domination number $\g_2$ and 2-bondage number $b_2$ for the grid graphs $G_{m,n}=P_m\times P_n$ for…
A 3-tournament is a complete 3-uniform hypergraph where each edge has a special vertex designated as its tail. A vertex set $X$ dominates $T$ if every vertex not in $X$ is contained in an edge whose tail is in $X$. The domination number of $T$ is the minimum size of such an $X$. Generalizing well-known results about usual (graph) tournaments, Gyárfás conjectured that there are 3-tournaments with arbitrarily large domination number, and that this is not the case if any four vertices induce two triples with the same tail. In this short note we solve both problems, proving the first conjecture an…
We identify the mean growth of the independence number of random binary search trees and random recursive trees and show normal fluctuations around their means. Similarly we also show normal limit laws for the domination number and variations of it for these two cases of random tree models. Our results are an application of a recent general theorem of Holmgren and Janson on fringe trees in these two random tree models.
A linear system is a pair $(P,\mathcal{L})$ where $\mathcal{L}$ is a family of subsets on a ground finite set $P$ such that $|l\cap l^\prime|\leq 1$, for every $l,l^\prime \in \mathcal{L}$. The elements of $P$ and $\mathcal{L}$ are called points and lines, respectively, and the linear system is called intersecting if any pair of lines intersect in exactly one point. A subset $D$ of points of a linear system $(P,\mathcal{L})$ is a dominating set of $(P,\mathcal{L})$ if for every $u\in P\setminus D$ there exists $v\in D$ such that $u,v\in l$, for some $l\in\mathcal{L}$. The cardinality of a mini…
The Grundy domination number of a simple graph $G = (V,E)$ is the length of the longest sequence of unique vertices $S = (v_1, \ldots, v_k)$, $v_i \in V$, that satisfies the property $N[v_i] \setminus \cup_{j=1}^{i-1}N[v_j] \neq \emptyset$ for each $i \in [k]$. Here, $N(v) = \{u : uv \in E\}$ and $N[v] = N(v) \cup \{v\}$. In this note, we prove a recent conjecture about the Grundy domination number of the strong product of two graphs. We then discuss how this result relates to the zero forcing number of the strong product of graphs.
Ho proved in [A note on the total domination number, Util.Math. 77 (2008) 97--100] that the total domination number of the Cartesian product of any two graphs with no isolated vertices is at least one half of the product of their total domination numbers. We extend a result of Lu and Hou from [Total domination in the Cartesian product of a graph and $K_2$ or $C_n$, Util. Math. 83 (2010) 313--322] by characterizing the pairs of graphs $G$ and $H$ for which $γ_t(G\Box H)=\frac{1}{2}γ_t(G) γ_t(H)\,$, whenever $γ_t(H)=2$. In addition, we present an infinite family of graphs $G_n$ with $γ_t(G_n)=2n…
A dominating set $D$ for a graph $G$ is a subset of $V(G)$ such that any vertex not in $D$ has at least one neighbor in $D$. The domination number $γ(G)$ is the size of a minimum dominating set in $G$. Vizing's conjecture from 1968 states that for the Cartesian product of graphs $G$ and $H$, $γ(G) γ(H) \leq γ(G \Box H)$, and Clark and Suen (2000) proved that $γ(G) γ(H) \leq 2γ(G \Box H)$. In this paper, we modify the approach of Clark and Suen to prove a variety of similar bounds related to total and paired domination, and also extend these bounds to the $n$-Cartesian product of graphs $A^1$ t…
The bondage number b(G) of a graph G is the smallest number of edges whose removal from G results in a graph with larger domination number. In this paper we present new upper bounds for b(G) in terms of girth, order and Euler characteristic.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph without isolated vertices. A matching in $G$ is a set of independent edges in $G$. A perfect matching $M$ in $G$ is a matching such that every vertex of $G$ is incident to an edge of $M$. A set $S\subseteq V$ is a \textit{paired-dominating set} of $G$ if every vertex in $V-S$ is adjacent to some vertex in $S$ and if the subgraph $G[S]$ induced by $S$ contains at least one perfect matching. The paired-domination problem is to find a paired-dominating set of $G$ with minimum cardinality. A set $MPD\subseteq E$ is a \textit{matched-paired-dominating set} of $G$ if $MPD$ i…
A set of vertices $W$ of a graph $G$ is a total $k$-dominating set when every vertex of $G$ has at least $k$ neighbors in $W$. In a recent article, Chiarelli et al.\ (Improved Algorithms for $k$-Domination and Total $k$-Domination in Proper Interval Graphs, Lecture Notes in Comput.\ Sci.\ 10856, 290--302, 2018) prove that a total $k$-dominating set can be computed in $O(n^{3k})$ time when $G$ is a proper interval graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. In this note we reduce the time complexity to $O(m)$ for $k=2$.
For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a Roman $\{2\}$-dominating function (R2DF)$f:V\rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ has the property that for every vertex $v\in V$ with $f(v)=0$, either there exists a neighbor $u\in N(v)$, with $f(u)=2$, or at least two neighbors $x,y\in N(v)$ having $f(x)=f(y)=1$. The weight of a R2DF is the sum $f(V)=\sum_{v\in V}{f(v)}$, and the minimum weight of a R2DF is the Roman $\{2\}$-domination number $γ_{\{R2\}}(G)$. A R2DF is independent if the set of vertices having positive function values is an independent set. The independent Roman $\{2\}$-domination number $i_{\{R2\}}(G)$ is the mini…
Given a simple graph $G$, a dominating set in $G$ is a set of vertices $S$ such that every vertex not in $S$ has a neighbor in $S$. Denote the domination number, which is the size of any minimum dominating set of $G$, by $γ(G)$. For any integer $k\ge 1$, a function $f : V (G) \rightarrow \{0, 1, . . ., k\}$ is called a \emph{$\{k\}$-dominating function} if the sum of its function values over any closed neighborhood is at least $k$. The weight of a $\{k\}$-dominating function is the sum of its values over all the vertices. The $\{k\}$-domination number of $G$, $γ_{\{k\}}(G)$, is defined to be t…
In a recent paper, Grau et al. (2017) studied the zero divisor graphs of the ring of Lipschitz integers modulo $n$, and computed the domination number of the undirected zero divisor graph of the ring of Lipschitz integers modulo $n$. But the case $n$ is a power of prime numbers remained open. In this note, this problem is solved. We also show the automorphism group of the zero divisor graph of the ring of Lipschitz integers modulo $2^s$.
Given a graph $G$, a dominating set of $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices such that each vertex not in $S$ has a neighbor in $S$. The domination number of $G$, denoted $γ(G)$, is the minimum size of a dominating set of $G$. The independent domination number of $G$, denoted $i(G)$, is the minimum size of a dominating set of $G$ that is also independent. Note that every graph has an independent dominating set, as a maximal independent set is equivalent to an independent dominating set. Let $G$ be a connected $k$-regular graph that is not $K_{k, k}$ where $k\geq 4$. Generalizing a result by Lam, Shiu, …
In this note, we consider the following problem: given a connected graph $G$, can we reduce the domination number of $G$ by using only one edge contraction? We show that the problem is polynomial-time solvable on $P_3+kP_2$-free graphs for any $k \geq 0$ which combined with results of [1,2] leads to a complexity dichotomy of the problem on $H$-free graphs.
Let $γ(G)$ denote the domination number of graph $G$. Let $G$ and $H$ be graphs and $G\Box H$ their Cartesian product. For $h\in V(H)$ define $G_h=\{(g,h)\,|\,g\in V(G)\}$ and call this set a $G$-layer of $G\Box H$. We prove the following special case of Vizing's conjecture. Let $D$ be a dominating set of $G\Box H$. If there exist minimum dominating sets $D_1$ and $D_2$ of $G$ such that for every $h\in V(H)$, the projection of $D\cap G_h$ to $G$ is contained in $D_1$ or $D_2$, then $|D|\geq γ(G)γ(H)$.
The k-domination number of a graph is the minimum size of a set X such that every vertex of G is in distance at most k from X. We give a linear time constant-factor approximation algorithm for k-domination number in classes of graphs with bounded expansion, which include e.g. proper minor-closed graph classes, classes closed on topological minors or classes of graphs that can be drawn on a fixed surface with bounded number of crossings on each edge. The algorithm is based on the following approximate min-max characterization. A subset A of vertices of a graph G is d-independent if the distance…
A dominating set of a graph is a subset $D$ of its vertices such that every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to at least one member of $D$. The domination number of a graph $G$ is the number of vertices in a smallest dominating set of $G$. The bondage number of a nonempty graph $G$ is the size of a smallest set of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with domination number greater than the domination number of $G$. In this note, we study the bondage number of binomial random graph $G(n,p)$. We obtain a lower bound that matches the order of the trivial upper bound. As a side product, we…
The ratio of the connected domination number, $γ_c$, and the domination number, $γ$, is strictly bounded from above by 3. It was shown by Zverovich that for every connected $(P_5,C_5)$-free graph, $γ_c = γ$. In this paper, we investigate the interdependence of $γ$ and $γ_c$ in the class of $(P_k,C_k)$-free graphs, for $k \ge 6$. We prove that for every connected $(P_6,C_6)$-free graph, $γ_c \le γ+ 1$ holds, and there is a family of $(P_6,C_6)$-free graphs with arbitrarily large values of $γ$ attaining this bound. Moreover, for every connected $(P_8,C_8)$-free graph, $γ_c / γ\le 2$, and there i…
Let $G$ be a graph on $V$. A vertex subset $S \subset V$ is called a cover of $G$ if its complement is an independent set, and $S$ is called a noncover if it is not a cover of $G$. A noncover complex $NC(G)$ of $G$ is the simplicial complex on $V$ whose faces are noncovers of $G$. The independence domination number $ iγ(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum integer $k$ such that every independent set of $G$ can be dominated by $k$ vertices. In this note, we prove that $NC(G)$ is $(|V|- iγ(G)-1)$-collapsible.

Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V$, and let $k$ be a positive integer. A set $D \subseteq V$ is a \emph{distance-$k$ dominating set} of $G$ if, for each vertex $u \in V-D$, there exists a vertex $w\in D$ such that $d(u,w) \le k$, where $d(u,w)$ is the minimum number of edges linking $u$ and $w$ in $G$. Let $d_k(x, y)=\min\{d(x,y), k+1\}$. A set $R\subseteq V$ is a \emph{distance-$k$ resolving set} of $G$ if, for any pair of distinct $x,y\in V$, there exists a vertex $z\in R$ such that $d_k(x,z) \neq d_k(y,z)$. The \emph{distance-$k$ domination number} $γ_k(G)$ (\emph{distance-$k$ dimension…
For a subset $S$ of vertices in a graph $G$, a vertex $v \in S$ is an enclave of $S$ if $v$ and all of its neighbors are in $S$, where a neighbor of $v$ is a vertex adjacent to $v$. A set $S$ is enclaveless if it does not contain any enclaves. The enclaveless number $Ψ(G)$ of $G$ is the maximum cardinality of an enclaveless set in $G$. As first observed in 1997 by Slater [J. Res. Nat. Bur. Standards 82 (1977), 197--202], if $G$ is a graph with $n$ vertices, then $γ(G) + Ψ(G) = n$ where $γ(G)$ is the well-studied domination number of $G$. In this paper, we continue the study of the competition-…
