A set $D$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a total dominating set if every vertex of $G$ is adjacent to at least one vertex of $D$. The total domination number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of any total dominating set of $G$ and is denoted by $γ_t(G)$. The total dominating set $D$ is called a total co-independent dominating set if $V(G)\setminus D$ is an independent set and has at least one vertex. The minimum cardinality of any total co-independent dominating set is denoted by $γ_{t,coi}(G)$. In this paper, we show that, for any tree $T$ of order $n$ and diameter at least three, $n-β(T)\leq γ_{t,coi}(T)\leq n-|L(T)|$ where $β(T)$ is the maximum cardinality of any independent set and $L(T)$ is the set of leaves of $T$. We also characterize the families of trees attaining the extremal bounds above and show that the differences between the value of $γ_{t,coi}(T)$ and these bounds can be arbitrarily large for some classes of trees.
Let $γ(G)$ and $i(G)$ be the domination number and the independent domination number of $G$, respectively. In 1977, Hedetniemi and Mitchell began with the comparison of of $i(G)$ and $γ(G)$ and recently Rad and Volkmann posted a conjecture that $i(G)/ γ(G) \leq Δ(G)/2$, where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. In this work, we prove the conjecture for trees and provide the graph achieved the sharp bound.
Recently, Haynes, Hedetniemi and Henning published the book Topics in Domination in Graphs, which comprises 16 contributions that present advanced topics in graph domination, featuring open problems, modern techniques, and recent results. One of these contributions is the chapter Multiple Domination, by Hansberg and Volkmann, where they put into context all relevant research results on multiple domination that have been found up to 2020. In this note, we show how to improve some results on double domination that are included in the book.
We provide a constructive characterization of the trees for which the Roman domination number strongly equals the weak Roman domination number, that is, for which every weak Roman dominating function of minimum weight is a Roman dominating function. Our characterization is based on five simple extension operations, and reveals several structural properties of these trees.
Let $γ(G)$ and $i(G)$ be the domination number and the independent domination number of $G$, respectively. Rad and Volkmann posted a conjecture that $i(G)/ γ(G) \leq Δ(G)/2$ for any graph $G$, where $Δ(G)$ is its maximum degree (See \cite{5}: N.J. Rad, L. Volkmann, A note on the independent domination number in graphs. Discrete Appl. Math. 161(2013) 3087--3089). In this work, we verify the conjecture for bipartite graphs. Several graph classes attaining the extremal bound and graphs containing odd cycles with the ratio larger than $Δ(G)/2$ are provided as well.
The upper and lower Nordhaus-Gaddum bounds over all graphs for the power domination number follow from known bounds on the domination number and examples. In this note we improve the upper sum bound for the power domination number substantially for graphs having the property that both the graph and its complement must be connected. For these graphs, our bound is tight and is also significantly better than the corresponding bound for domination number. We also improve the product upper bound for the power domination number for graphs with certain properties.
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$. The domination polynomial of $G$ is the polynomial $D(G, x)=\sum_{i=γ(G)}^{n} d(G,i) x^{i}$, where $d(G,i)$ is the number of dominating sets of $G$ of size $i$ and $γ(G)$ is the domination number of $G$. In this paper we study the domination polynomials of several classes of $k$-tree related graphs. Also, we present families of these kind of graphs, whose domination polynomial have no nonzero real roots.
A locating-dominating set (LDS) of a graph $G$ is a dominating set $S$ of $G$ such that for every two vertices $u$ and $v$ in $V(G) \setminus S$, $N(u)\cap S \neq N(v)\cap S$. The locating-domination number $γ^{L}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a LDS of $G$. Further if $S$ is a total dominating set then $S$ is called a locating-total dominating set. In this paper we determine the domination, total domination, locating-domination and locating-total domination numbers for hypertrees and sibling trees.
For $S\subseteq V(G)$, we define $\bar{S}=V(G)\setminus S$. A set $S\subseteq V(G)$ is called a super dominating set if for every vertex $u\in \bar{S}$, there exists $v\in S$ such that $N(v)\cap \bar{S}=\{u\}$. The super domination number $γ_{sp}(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality among all super dominating sets in $G$. The super domination subdivision number $sd_{γ_{sp}}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges that must be subdivided in order to increase the super domination number of $G$. In this paper, we investigate the ratios between super domination and other domination para…
Motivated by the question of computing the probability of successful power domination by placing k monitors uniformly at random, in this paper we give a recursive formula to count the number of power domination sets of size k in a labeled complete m-ary tree. As a corollary we show that the desired probability can be computed in exponential with linear exponent time.
Let $G$ be a simple and finite graph without isolated vertices. In this paper we introduce and study a new degree sequence derived invariant called the \emph{sub-total domination number}, denoted $\sub_t(G)$. In particular, we show that $\sub_t(G)$ serves as a lower bound on $γ_t(G)$, where $γ_t(G)$ denotes the heavily studied \emph{total domination number} of $G$.
The domination game is played on a graph G. Vertices are chosen, one at a time, by two players Dominator and Staller. Each chosen vertex must enlarge the set of vertices of G dominated to that point in the game. Both players use an optimal strategy---Dominator plays so as to end the game as quickly as possible while Staller plays in such a way that the game lasts as many steps as possible. The game domination number of G is the number of vertices chosen when Dominator starts the game and the Staller-start game domination number of G when Staller starts the game. In this paper these two games a…
Mobile guards on the vertices of a graph are used to defend the graph against an infinite sequence of attacks on vertices. A guard must move from a neighboring vertex to an attacked vertex (we assume attacks happen only at vertices containing no guard). More than one guard is allowed to move in response to an attack. The $m$-eternal domination number is the minimum number of guards needed to defend the graph. We characterize the trees achieving several upper and lower bounds on the $m$-eternal domination number.
The first multiplicative Zagreb index $Π_1$ of a graph $G$ is the product of the square of every vertex degree, while the second multiplicative Zagreb index $Π_2$ is the product of the products of degrees of pairs of adjacent vertices. In this paper, we give sharp lower bound for $Π_1$ and upper bound for $Π_2$ of trees with given distance $k$-domination number, and characterize those trees attaining the bounds.
A \emph{perfect Roman dominating function} (PRDF) on a graph $G = (V, E)$ is a function $f : V \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ satisfying the condition that every vertex $u$ for which $f(u) = 0$ is adjacent to exactly one vertex $v$ for which $f(v) = 2$. The weight of a PRDF is the value $w(f) = \sum_{u \in V}f(u)$. The minimum weight of a PRDF on a graph $G$ is called the \emph{perfect Roman domination number $γ_R^p(G)$} of $G$. A graph $G$ is perfect Roman domination domination stable if the perfect Roman domination number of $G$ remains unchanged under the removal of any vertex. In this paper, we …
A broadcast on a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a function $f:V \rightarrow \{0,1, \ldots, \text{diam}(G)\}$ satisfying $f(v) \leq e(v)$ for all $v \in V$, where $e(v)$ denotes the eccentricity of $v$ and $\text{diam}(G)$ denotes the diameter of $G$. We say that a broadcast dominates $G$ if every vertex can hear at least one broadcasting node. The upper domination number is the maximum cost of all possible minimal broadcasts, where the cost of a broadcast is defined as $\text{cost} (f)= \sum_{v \in V}f(v)$. In this paper we establish both the upper domination number and the upper broadcast domination numb…
In this paper, we continue the study of the total domination game in graphs introduced in [Graphs Combin. 31(5) (2015), 1453--1462], where the players Dominator and Staller alternately select vertices of $G$. Each vertex chosen must strictly increase the number of vertices totally dominated, where a vertex totally dominates another vertex if they are neighbors. This process eventually produces a total dominating set $S$ of $G$ in which every vertex is totally dominated by a vertex in $S$. Dominator wishes to minimize the number of vertices chosen, while Staller wishes to maximize it. The game …
For a graph $G$ with domination number $γ$, Hedetniemi, Jacobs and Trevisan [European Journal of Combinatorics 53 (2016) 66-71] proved that $m_{G}[0,1)\leq γ$, where $m_{G}[0,1)$ means the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ in the interval $[0,1)$. Let $T$ be a tree with diameter $d$. In this paper, we show that $m_{T}[0,1)\geq (d+1)/3$. However, such a lower bound is false for general graphs. All trees achieving the lower bound are completely characterized. Moreover, for a tree $T$, we establish a relation between the Laplacian eigenvalues, the diameter and the domination number by showin…
A $k-$quasiperfect dominating set ($k\ge 1$) of a graph $G$ is a vertex subset $S$ such that every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to at least one and at most k vertices in $S$. The cardinality of a minimum k-quasiperfect dominating set in $G$ is denoted by $γ_{\stackrel{}{1k}}(G)$. Those sets were first introduced by Chellali et al. (2013) as a generalization of the perfect domination concept. The quasiperfect domination chain $γ_{\stackrel{}{11}}(G)\geγ_{\stackrel{}{12}}(G)\ge\dots\geγ_{\stackrel{}{1Δ}}(G)=γ(G)$, indicates what it is lost in size when you move towards a more perfect domination…
In a graph $G$, a vertex dominates itself and its neighbours. A set $D\subseteq V(G)$ is said to be a $k$-tuple dominating set of $G$ if $D$ dominates every vertex of $G$ at least $k$ times. The minimum cardinality among all $k$-tuple dominating sets is the $k$-tuple domination number of $G$. In this paper, we provide new bounds on this parameter. Some of these bounds generalize other ones that have been given for the case $k=2$. In addition, we improve two well-known lower bounds on the $k$-tuple domination number.
The zeroth-order general Randić index of graph $G=(V_G,E_G)$, denoted by $^0R_α(G)$, is the sum of items $(d_{v})^α$ over all vertices $v\in V_G$, where $α$ is a pertinently chosen real number. In this paper, we obtain the sharp upper and lower bounds on $^0R_α$ of trees with a domination number $γ$, in intervals $α\in(-\infty,0)\cup(1,\infty)$ and $α\in(0,1)$, respectively. The corresponding extremal graphs of these bounds are also characterized.
In this paper, we study a parameter that is a relaxation of arguably the most important domination parameter, namely the domination number. Given the sheer scale of modern networks, many existing domination type structures are expensive to implement. Variations on the theme of dominating and total dominating sets studied to date tend to focus on adding restrictions which in turn raises their implementation costs. As an alternative route a relaxation of the domination number, called disjunctive domination, was proposed and studied by Goddard et al. A set $D$ of vertices in $G$ is a disjunctive …

In this paper, we continue the study of neighborhood total domination in graphs first studied by Arumugam and Sivagnanam [Opuscula Math. 31 (2011), 519--531]. A neighborhood total dominating set, abbreviated NTD-set, in a graph $G$ is a dominating set $S$ in $G$ with the property that the subgraph induced by the open neighborhood of the set $S$ has no isolated vertex. The neighborhood total domination number, denoted by $\gnt(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a NTD-set of $G$. Every total dominating set is a NTD-set, implying that $γ(G) \le \gnt(G) \le \gt(G)$, where $γ(G)$ and $\gt(G)$ denot…
For a graph $G = (V, E)$ with vertex set $V$ and edge set $E$, a subset $F$ of $E$ is called an $\emph{edge dominating set}$ (resp. a $\emph{total edge dominating set}$) if every edge in $E\backslash F$ (resp. in $E$) is adjacent to at least one edge in $F$, the minimum cardinality of an edge dominating set (resp. a total edge dominating set) of $G$ is the {\em edge domination number} (resp. {\em total edge domination number}) of $G$, denoted by $γ^{'}(G)$ (resp. $γ_t^{'}(G)$). In the present paper, we prove that the total edge domination problem is NP-complete for bipartite graphs with maximu…
Let $L(G)$ denote the maximum number of leaves in any spanning tree of a connected graph $G$. We show the (known) result that for the $n$-cube $Q_n$, $L(Q_n) \sim 2^n = |V(Q_n)|$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. Examining this more carefully, consider the minimum size of a connected dominating set of vertices $γ_c(Q_n)$, which is $2^n-L(Q_n)$ for $n\ge2$. We show that $γ_c(Q_n)\sim 2^n/n$. We use Hamming codes and an "expansion" method to construct leafy spanning trees in $Q_n$.
A Roman dominating function (RDF) on a graph $G = (V, E)$ is a labeling $f : V \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ such that every vertex with label $0$ has a neighbor with label $2$. The weight of $f$ is the value $f(V) = Σ_{v\in V} f(v)$. The Roman domination number, $γ_R(G)$, of $G$ is the minimum weight of an RDF on $G$. An RDF of minimum weight is called a $γ_R$-function. A graph G is said to be $γ_R$-excellent if for each vertex $x \in V$ there is a $γ_R$-function $h_x$ on $G$ with $h_x(x) \not = 0$. We present a constructive characterization of $γ_R$-excellent trees using labelings. A graph $G$ is…
The total domination number $γ_{t}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the cardinality of a smallest set $D\subseteq V(G)$ such that each vertex of $G$ has a neighbor in $D$. The annihilation number $a(G)$ of $G$ is the largest integer $k$ such that there exist $k$ different vertices in $G$ with the degree sum at most $m(G)$. It is conjectured that $γ_{t}(G)\leq a(G)+1$ holds for every nontrivial connected graph $G$. The conjecture has been proved for graphs with minimum degree at least $3$, trees, certain tree-like graphs, block graphs, and cactus graphs. In the main result of this paper it is proved that …
A set $S$ of vertices in $G$ is a semitotal dominating set of $G$ if it is a dominating set of $G$ and every vertex in $S$ is within distance $2$ of another vertex of $S$. The \emph{semitotal domination number}, $γ_{t2}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a semitotal dominating set of $G$. The \emph{semitotal domination multisubdivision number} of a graph $G$, $msd_{γ_{t2}}(G)$, is the minimum positive integer $k$ such that there exists an edge which must be subdivided $k$ times to increase the semitotal domination number of $G$. In this paper, we show that $msd_{γ_{t2}}(G)\leq 3$ for any graph…
For a graph $G$, the first multiplicative Zagreb index $\prod_1$ is equal to the product of squares of the vertex degrees, and the second multiplicative Zagreb index $\prod_2$ is equal to the product of the products of degrees of pairs of adjacent vertices. The (mutiplicative) Zagreb indices have been the focus of considerable research in computational chemistry dating back to Gutman and Trinajstić in 1972. In this paper, we explore the mutiplicative Zagreb indices in terms of arbitrary domination number. The sharp upper and lower bounds of $\prod_1(G)$ and $\prod_2(G)$ are given. In addition,…
A subset $D$ of the vertex set $V$ of a graph $G$ is called an $[1,k]$-dominating set if every vertex from $V-D$ is adjacent to at least one vertex and at most $k$ vertices of $D$. A $[1,k]$-dominating set with the minimum number of vertices is called a $γ_{[1,k]}$-set and the number of its vertices is the $[1,k]$-domination number $γ_{[1,k]}(G)$ of $G$. In this short note we show that the decision problem whether $γ_{[1,k]}(G)=n$ is an $NP$-hard problem, even for bipartite graphs. Also, a simple construction of a bipartite graph $G$ of order $n$ satisfying $γ_{[1,k]}(G)=n$ is given for every …
For a graph $G$, the $γ$-graph of $G$, $G(γ)$, is the graph whose vertices correspond to the minimum dominating sets of $G$, and where two vertices of $G(γ)$ are adjacent if and only if their corresponding dominating sets in $G$ differ by exactly two adjacent vertices. In this paper, we present several variations of the $γ$-graph including those using identifying codes, locating-domination, total-domination, paired-domination, and the upper-domination number. For each, we show that for any graph $H$, there exist infinitely many graphs whose $γ$-graph variant is isomorphic to $H$.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph. A subset $D$ of $V$ is a \textit{restrained dominating set} if every vertex in $V \setminus D$ is adjacent to a vertex in $D$ and to a vertex in $V \setminus D$. The \textit{restrained domination number}, denoted by $γ_r(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of a restrained dominating set of $G$. A function $f : V \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ is a \textit{restrained Italian dominating function} on $G$ if (i) for each vertex $v \in V$ for which $f(v)=0$, it holds that $\sum_{u \in N_G(v)} f(u) \geq 2$, (ii) the subgraph induced by $\{v \in V \mid f(v)=0 \}$ has no isolated vert…
We identify the mean growth of the independence number of random binary search trees and random recursive trees and show normal fluctuations around their means. Similarly we also show normal limit laws for the domination number and variations of it for these two cases of random tree models. Our results are an application of a recent general theorem of Holmgren and Janson on fringe trees in these two random tree models.
The domination multisubdivision number of a nonempty graph $G$ was defined as the minimum positive integer $k$ such that there exists an edge which must be subdivided $k$ times to increase the domination number of $G$. Similarly we define the total domination multisubdivision number msd$_{γ_t}(G)$ of a graph $G$ and we show that for any connected graph $G$ of order at least two, msd$_{γ_t}(G)\leq 3.$ We show that for trees the total domination multisubdivision number is equal to the known total domination subdivision number. We also determine the total domination multisubdivision number for so…
A set of vertices $W$ in a connected graph $G$ is called a Steiner dominating set if $W$ is both Steiner and dominating set. The Steiner domination number $γ_{st}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a Steiner dominating set of $G$. A linear algorithm is proposed in this paper for finding a minimum Steiner dominating set for a tree $T$.
A subset $D\subseteq V(G)$ is called a $k$-distance dominating set of $G$ if every vertex in $V(G)\setminus D$ is within distance $k$ from some vertex of $D$. The minimum cardinality among all $k$-distance dominating sets of $G$ is called the $k$-distance domination number of $G$. In this note we give upper bound on the $k$-distance domination number of a connected bipartite graph and improve some results have been given like Theorem 2.1 and 2,7 in [Tian and Xu, A note on distance domination of graphs, Australian Journal of Combinatorics, 43 (2009), 181-190].
In this paper, we study the inverse signed total domination number in graphs and present new lower and upper bounds on this parameter. For example by making use of the classic theorem of Turan (1941), we present a sharp upper bound for graphs with no induced complete subgraph of order greater than two. Also, we bound this parameter for a tree in terms of its order and the number of leaves and characterize all trees attaining this bound.
We study relations between diameter $D(G)$, domination number $γ(G)$, independence number $α(G)$ and cop number $c(G)$ of a connected graph $G$, showing (i.) $c(G) \leq α(G)-\lfloor \frac{D(G)-3}{2} \rfloor$, and (ii.) $c(G) \leq γ(G) - \frac{D(G)}{3} + O (\sqrt{D(G)})$.
The $k$-rainbow independent domination number of a graph $G$, denoted $γ_{\rm rik}(G)$, is the cardinality of a smallest set consisting of two vertex-disjoint independent sets $V_1$ and $V_2$ for which every vertex in $V(G)\setminus (V_1\cup V_2)$ has neighbors in both $V_1$ and $V_2$. This domination invariant was proposed by {Š}umenjak, Rall and Tepeh in (Applied Mathematics and Computation 333(15), 2018: 353-361), which allows to reduce the problem of computing the independent domination number of the generalized prism $G {\Box} K_k$ to an integer labeling problem on $G$. They proved a Nord…
Given a graph $G$, a dominating set $D$ is a set of vertices such that any vertex in $G$ has at least one neighbor (or possibly itself) in $D$. A ${k}$-dominating multiset $D_k$ is a multiset of vertices such that any vertex in $G$ has at least $k$ vertices from its closed neighborhood in $D_k$ when counted with multiplicity. In this paper, we utilize the approach developed by Clark and Suen (2000) and properties of binary matrices to prove a "Vizing-like" inequality on minimum ${k}$-dominating multisets of graphs $G,H$ and the Cartesian product graph $G \Box H$. Specifically, denoting the siz…
The aim of this work is to investigate the nonnegative signed domination number $γ^{NN}_s$ with emphasis on regular, ($r+1$)-clique-free graphs and trees. We give lower and upper bounds on $γ^{NN}_s$ for regular graphs and prove that $n/3$ is the best possible upper bound on this parameter for a cubic graph of order $n$, specifically. As an application of the classic theorem of Turán we bound $γ^{NN}_s(G)$ from below, for an ($r+1$)-clique-free graph $G$ and characterize all such graphs for which the equality holds, which corrects and generalizes a result for bipartite graphs in [Electron. J. …
In this paper, we study the signed total domination number in graphs and present new sharp lower and upper bounds for this parameter. For example by making use of the classic theorem of Turan, we present a sharp lower bound on this parameter for graphs with no complete graph of order r+1 as a subgraph. Also, we prove that n-2(s-s') is an upper bound on the signed total domination number of any tree of order n with s support vertices and s' support vertives of degree two. Moreover, we characterize all trees attainig this bound.
In this paper, for a graph G and a family of partitions P of vertex neighborhoods of G, we define the general corona G \circ P of G. Among several properties of this new operation, we focus on application general coronas to a new kind of characterization of trees with the domination subdivision number equal to 3.
For a function $f : V(G ) \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ we denote by $V_i$ the set of vertices to which the value $i$ is assigned by $f$, i.e. $V_i = \{ x \in V (G ) : f(x ) = i \}$. If a function $f: V(G) \rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ satisfying the condition that $V_i$ is independent for $i \in \{1,2\}$ and every vertex $u$ for which $f(u) = 0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex $v$ for which $f(v) = i$ for each $i \in \{1,2\}$, then $f$ is called a 2-rainbow independent dominating function (2RiDF). The weight $w(f)$ of a 2RiDF $f$ is the value $w(f) = |V_1|+|V_2|$. The minimum weight of a 2RiDF on a gr…
