Given a graph $G$, a dominating set of $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices such that each vertex not in $S$ has a neighbor in $S$. The domination number of $G$, denoted $γ(G)$, is the minimum size of a dominating set of $G$. The independent domination number of $G$, denoted $i(G)$, is the minimum size of a dominating set of $G$ that is also independent. Note that every graph has an independent dominating set, as a maximal independent set is equivalent to an independent dominating set.
Let $G$ be a connected $k$-regular graph that is not $K_{k, k}$ where $k\geq 4$. Generalizing a result by Lam, Shiu, and Sun, we prove that $i(G)\le \frac{k-1}{2k-1}|V(G)|$, which is tight for $k = 4$. This answers a question by Goddard et al. in the affirmative. We also show that $\frac{i(G)}{γ(G)} \le \frac{k^3-3k^2+2}{2k^2-6k+2}$, strengthening upon a result of Knor, Škrekovski, and Tepeh. In addition, we prove that a graph $G'$ with maximum degree at most $4$ satisfies $i(G') \le \frac{5}{9}|V(G')|$, which is also tight.
The $k$-rainbow domination problem is studied for regular graphs. We prove that the $k$-rainbow domination number $γ_{rk}(G)$ of a $d$-regular graph for $d\leq k\leq 2d$ is bounded below by $\displaystyle{\left\lceil kn/2d\right\rceil}$, where $n$ is the order of a graph. We determine necessary conditions for regular graphs to attain this bound and find several examples. As an application, we determine exact $k$-rainbow domination numbers for all cubic Cayley graphs over abelian groups.
In this paper, we first show that the power domination number of a connected $4$-regular claw-free graph on $n$ vertices is at most $\frac{n+1}{5}$, and the bound is sharp. The statement partly disprove the conjecture presented by Dorbec et al. in SIAM J. Discrete Math., 27:1559-1574, 2013. Then we present a dynamic programming style linear-time algorithm for weighted power domination problem in trees.
In this paper, we give a series of couterexamples to negate a conjecture and hence answer an open question on the $k$-power domination of regular graphs (see [P. Dorbec et al., SIAM J. Discrete Math., 27 (2013), pp. 1559-1574]). Furthermore, we focus on the study of $k$-power domination of claw-free graphs. We show that for $l\in\{2,3\}$ and $k\ge l$, the $k$-power domination number of a connected claw-free $(k+l+1)$-regular graph on $n$ vertices is at most $\frac{n}{k+l+2}$, and this bound is tight.
A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is a dominating set if every vertex of $G$ is in $S$ or is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. If, in addition, $S$ is an independent set, then $S$ is an independent dominating set. The domination number $γ(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set in $G$, while the independent domination number $i(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of an independent dominating set in $G$. We prove that for all integers $k \geq 3$ it holds that if $G$ is a connected $k$-regular graph, then $\frac{i(G)}{γ(G)} \leq \frac{k}{2}$, with equality if and only if $G = K…
Let $γ(G)$ and $i(G)$ be the domination number and the independent domination number of $G$, respectively. In 1977, Hedetniemi and Mitchell began with the comparison of of $i(G)$ and $γ(G)$ and recently Rad and Volkmann posted a conjecture that $i(G)/ γ(G) \leq Δ(G)/2$, where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. In this work, we prove the conjecture for trees and provide the graph achieved the sharp bound.
We find new upper bounds on the size of a minimum totally dominating set for random regular graphs and for regular graphs with large girth. These bounds are obtained through the analysis of a local algorithm using a method due to Hoppen and Wormald [Local algorithms, regular graphs of large girth, and random regular graphs. Combinatorica 38(3) (2018), 619-664].
Let $γ(G)$ and $i(G)$ be the domination number and the independent domination number of $G$, respectively. Rad and Volkmann posted a conjecture that $i(G)/ γ(G) \leq Δ(G)/2$ for any graph $G$, where $Δ(G)$ is its maximum degree (See \cite{5}: N.J. Rad, L. Volkmann, A note on the independent domination number in graphs. Discrete Appl. Math. 161(2013) 3087--3089). In this work, we verify the conjecture for bipartite graphs. Several graph classes attaining the extremal bound and graphs containing odd cycles with the ratio larger than $Δ(G)/2$ are provided as well.
An independent dominating set of the simple graph $G=(V,E)$ is a vertex subset that is both dominating and independent in $G$. The independent domination polynomial of a graph $G$ is the polynomial $D_i(G,x)=\sum_{A} x^{|A|}$, summed over all independent dominating subsets $A\subseteq V$. A root of $D_i(G,x)$ is called an independence domination root. We investigate the independent domination polynomials of some generalized compound graphs. As consequences, we construct graphs whose independence domination roots are real. Also, we consider some certain graphs and study the number of their inde…
In this paper, we define a new domination invariant on a graph $G$, which coincides with the ordinary independent domination number of the generalized prism $G \Box K_k$, called the $k$-rainbow independent domination number and denoted by $γ_{{\rm ri}k}(G)$. Some bounds and exact values concerning this domination concept are determined. As a main result, we prove a Nordhaus-Gaddum-type theorem on the sum for $2$-rainbow independent domination number, and show if G is a graph of order $n \geq 3$, then $5\leq γ_{{\rm ri}2}(G)+γ_{{\rm ri}2}(\overline{G})\leq n+3$, with both bounds being sharp.
A vertex subset $W\subseteq V$ of the graph $G=(V,E)$ is an independent dominating set if every vertex in $V\backslash W$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $W$ and the vertices of $W$ are pairwise non-adjacent. The independent domination polynomial is the ordinary generating function for the number of independent dominating sets in the graph. We investigate in this paper properties of the independent domination polynomial and some interesting connections to well known counting problems.
The {\em independent domination number} $γ^i(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum, over all independent sets $I$, of the minimal number of vertices needed to dominate $I$. It is known \cite{abz} that in chordal graphs $γ^i$ is equal to $γ$, the ordinary domination number. The weighted version of this result is not true, but we show that it does hold for interval graphs, and for the intersection (that is, line) graphs of subtrees of a given tree, where each subtree is a single edge.
For a function $f : V(G ) \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ we denote by $V_i$ the set of vertices to which the value $i$ is assigned by $f$, i.e. $V_i = \{ x \in V (G ) : f(x ) = i \}$. If a function $f: V(G) \rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ satisfying the condition that $V_i$ is independent for $i \in \{1,2\}$ and every vertex $u$ for which $f(u) = 0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex $v$ for which $f(v) = i$ for each $i \in \{1,2\}$, then $f$ is called a 2-rainbow independent dominating function (2RiDF). The weight $w(f)$ of a 2RiDF $f$ is the value $w(f) = |V_1|+|V_2|$. The minimum weight of a 2RiDF on a gr…
We study the problem of half-domination sets of vertices in vertex transitive infinite graphs generated by regular or semi-regular tessellations of the plane. In some cases, the results obtained are sharp and in the rest, we show upper bounds for the average densities of vertices in half-domination sets.
A subset $D$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a dominating set if for each $u\in V(G)\setminus D$, $u$ is adjacent to some vertex $v\in D$. The domination number, $γ(G)$ of $G$, is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of $G$. For an even integer $n\ge2$ and $1\leΔ\le\lfloor\log_2n\rfloor$, a Knödel graph $W_{Δ,n}$ is a $Delta$-regular bipartite graph of even order $n$, with vertices$(i,j)$, for $i=1,2$ and $0\le j\le n/2-1$, where for every $j$, $0\le j\le n/2-1$, there is an edge between $(1,j)$ and $(2,j+2^k-1 \text{(mod(n/2)})$, for $k=0,1,\cdots,Δ-1$. In this paper, we determine the do…
An independent double Roman dominating function (IDRDF) on a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{0,1,2,3\}$ having the property that if $f(v)=0$, then the vertex $v$ has at least two neighbors assigned $2$ under $f$ or one neighbor $w$ with assigned $3$ under $f$, and if $f(v)=1$, then there exists $w\in N(v)$ with $f(w)\geq2$ such that the positive weight vertices are independent. The weight of an IDRDF is the value $\sum_{u\in V}f(u)$. The independent double Roman domination number $i_{dR}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum weight of an IDRDF on G. We initiate the study of the …
For a given graph $G$ without isolated vertex we consider a function $f: V(G) \rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$. For every $i\in \{0,1,2\}$, let $V_i=\{v\in V(G):\; f(v)=i\}$. The function $f$ is known to be an outer-independent total Roman dominating function for the graph $G$ if it is satisfied that; (i) every vertex in $V_0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $V_2$; (ii) $V_0$ is an independent set; and (iii) the subgraph induced by $V_1\cup V_2$ has no isolated vertex. The minimum possible weight $ω(f)=\sum_{v\in V(G)}f(v)$ among all outer-independent total Roman dominating functions for $G$ is ca…
A subset $D$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a total dominating set if every vertex of $G$ is adjacent to at least one vertex of $D$. The total dominating set $D$ is called a total co-independent dominating set if the subgraph induced by $V-D$ is edgeless and has at least one vertex. The minimum cardinality of any total co-independent dominating set is the total co-independent domination number of $G$ and is denoted by $γ_{t,coi}(G)$. In this work we study some complexity and combinatorial properties of $γ_{t,coi}(G)$. Specifically, we prove that deciding whether $γ_{t,coi}(G)\le k$ for a given …
Let $G$ be a graph and let $S\subseteq V(G)$. The set $S$ is a double outer-independent dominating set of $G$ if $|N[v]\cap D|\geq2$, for all $v\in V(G)$, and $V(G)\setminus S$ is independent. Similarly, $S$ is a $2$-outer-independent dominating set, if every vertex from $V(G)\setminus S$ has at least two neighbors in $S$ and $V(G)\setminus S$ is independent. Finally, $S$ is a total outer-independent dominating set if every vertex from $V(G)$ has a neighbor in $S$ and the complement of $S$ is an independent set. The double, total or $2$-outer-independent domination number of $G$ is the smalles…
Rubalcaba and Slater (Robert R. Rubalcaba and Peter J. Slater. Efficient (j,k)-domination. Discuss. Math. Graph Theory, 27(3):409-423, 2007.) define a $(j,k)$-dominating function on graph $X$ as a function $f:V(X)\rightarrow \{0,\ldots,j\}$ so that for each $v\in V(X)$, $f(N[v])\geq k$, where $N[v]$ is the closed neighbourhood of $v$. Such a function is efficient if all of the vertex inequalities are met with equality. They give a simple necessary condition for efficient domination, namely: if $X$ is an $r$-regular graph on $n$ vertices that has an efficient $(1,k)$-dominating function, then t…
Let $G=(V, E)$ be a graph. A set $S\subseteq V(G)$ is a {\it dominating set} of $G$ if every vertex in $V\setminus S$ is adjacent to a vertex of $S$. The {\it domination number} of $G$, denoted by $γ(G)$, is the cardinality of a minimum dominating set of $G$. Furthermore, a dominating set $S$ is an {\it independent transversal dominating set} of $G$ if it intersects every maximum independent set of $G$. The {\it independent transversal domination number} of $G$, denoted by $γ_{it}(G)$, is the cardinality of a minimum independent transversal dominating set of $G$. In 2012, Hamid initiated the s…
In \cite{nr-1996} Nowakowski and Rall listed a series of conjectures involving several different graph products. In particular, they conjectured that $i(G\times H) \ge i(G)i(H)$ where $i(G)$ is the independent domination number of $G$ and $G\times H$ is the direct product of graphs $G$ and $H$. We show this conjecture is false, and, in fact, construct pairs of graphs for which $\min\{i(G), i(H)\} - i(G\times H)$ is arbitrarily large. We also give the exact value of $i(G\times K_n)$ when $G$ is either a path or a cycle.
A set $D$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a dominating set if each vertex of $V(G)\setminus D$ is adjacent to some vertex of $D$. The domination number of $G$, $γ(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of $G$. A graph $G$ is called domination vertex critical, or just $γ$-critical if removal of any vertex decreases the domination number. A graph $G$ is called domination vertex stable, or just $γ$-stable, if removal of any vertex does not decrease the domination number. For an even integer $n\ge 2$ and $1\le Δ\le \lfloor \log_2n \rfloor$, a Knödel graph $W_{Δ,n}$ is a $Δ$-regular bipa…
Given a finite graph $G$, the maximum length of a sequence $(v_1,\ldots,v_k)$ of vertices in $G$ such that each $v_i$ dominates a vertex that is not dominated by any vertex in $\{v_1,\ldots,v_{i-1}\}$ is called the Grundy domination number, $γ_{\rm gr}(G)$, of $G$. A small modification of the definition yields the Z-Grundy domination number, which is the dual invariant of the well-known zero forcing number. In this paper, we prove that $γ_{\rm gr}(G) \geq \frac{n + \lceil \frac{k}{2} \rceil - 2}{k-1}$ holds for every connected $k$-regular graph of order $n$ different from $K_{k+1}$ and $\bar{2…
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$, whose minimum vertex degree is at least $k$. A subset $S$ of vertices in $G$ is a $k$-tuple total dominating set if every vertex of $G$ is adjacent to at least $k$ vertices in $S$. The minimum cardinality of a $k$-tuple total dominating set of $G$ is the $k$-tuple total domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_{\times k,t}(G)$. Henning and Yeo in \cite{hen} proved that if $G$ is a cubic graph different from the Heawood graph, $γ_{\times 2, t}(G) \leq \frac{5}{6}n$, and this bound is sharp. Similarly, a $k$-tuple dominating set is a subset $S$ of vertic…
The $k$-rainbow independent domination number of a graph $G$, denoted $γ_{\rm rik}(G)$, is the cardinality of a smallest set consisting of two vertex-disjoint independent sets $V_1$ and $V_2$ for which every vertex in $V(G)\setminus (V_1\cup V_2)$ has neighbors in both $V_1$ and $V_2$. This domination invariant was proposed by {Š}umenjak, Rall and Tepeh in (Applied Mathematics and Computation 333(15), 2018: 353-361), which allows to reduce the problem of computing the independent domination number of the generalized prism $G {\Box} K_k$ to an integer labeling problem on $G$. They proved a Nord…
We propose the conjecture that the domination number $γ(G)$ of a $Δ$-regular graph $G$ with $Δ\geq 1$ is always at most its edge domination number $γ_e(G)$, which coincides with the domination number of its line graph. We prove that $γ(G)\leq \left(1+\frac{2(Δ-1)}{Δ2^Δ}\right)γ_e(G)$ for general $Δ\geq 1$, and $γ(G)\leq \left(\frac{7}{6}-\frac{1}{204}\right)γ_e(G)$ for $Δ=3$. Furthermore, we verify our conjecture for cubic claw-free graphs.
An independent dominating set of a graph, also known as a maximal independent set, is a set $S$ of pairwise non-adjacent vertices such that every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to some vertex in $S$. We prove that for $Δ=4$ or $Δ\ge 6$, every connected $n$-vertex graph of maximum degree at most $Δ$ has an independent dominating set of size at most $(1-\fracΔ{\lfloorΔ^2/4\rfloor+Δ})(n-1)+1$. In addition, we characterize all connected graphs having the equality and we show that other connected graphs have an independent dominating set of size at most $(1-\fracΔ{ \lfloorΔ^2/4\rfloor+Δ})n$.
For a graph $G$, a vertex subset $S \subseteq V(G)$ is said to be $K_{k}$-isolating if $G - N_{G}[S]$ does not contain $K_{k}$ as a subgraph. The $K_{k}$-isolation number of $G$, denoted by $ι_{k}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a $K_{k}$-isolating set of $G$. Analogously, $S$ is said to be independent $K_{k}$-isolating if $S$ is a $K_{k}$-isolating set of $G$ and $G[S]$ has no edge. The independent $K_{k}$-isolation number of $G$, denoted by $ι'_{k}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of an independent $K_{k}$-isolating set of $G$. Clearly, when $k = 1$, we have $γ(G) = ι_{1}(G)$ and $i(G) = ι…
Given a partition ${\mathcal V}=(V_1, \ldots,V_m)$ of the vertex set of a graph $G$, an {\em independent transversal} (IT) is an independent set in $G$ that contains one vertex from each $V_i$. A {\em fractional IT} is a non-negative real valued function on $V(G)$ that represents each part with total weight at least $1$, and belongs as a vector to the convex hull of the incidence vectors of independent sets in the graph. It is known that if the domination number of the graph induced on the union of every $k$ parts $V_i$ is at least $k$, then there is a fractional IT. We prove a weighted versio…
A dominating set in a graph $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices such that every vertex that does not belong to $S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. The domination number $γ(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of $G$. The common independence number $α_c(G)$ of $G$ is the greatest integer $r$ such that every vertex of $G$ belongs to some independent set of cardinality at least~$r$. The common independence number is squeezed between the independent domination number $i(G)$ and the independence number $α(G)$ of $G$, that is, $γ(G) \le i(G) \le α_c(G) \le α(G)$. A graph $G$ is dominat…
A set $D$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a total dominating set if every vertex of $G$ is adjacent to at least one vertex of $D$. The total domination number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of any total dominating set of $G$ and is denoted by $γ_t(G)$. The total dominating set $D$ is called a total co-independent dominating set if $V(G)\setminus D$ is an independent set and has at least one vertex. The minimum cardinality of any total co-independent dominating set is denoted by $γ_{t,coi}(G)$. In this paper, we show that, for any tree $T$ of order $n$ and diameter at least three, $n-β(T)\leq …
In this paper we initialize the study of independent domination in directed graphs. We show that an independent dominating set of an orientation of a graph is also an independent dominating set of the underlying graph, but that the converse is not true in general. We then prove existence and uniqueness theorems for several classes of digraphs including orientations of complete graphs, paths, trees, DAGs, cycles, and bipartite graphs. We also provide the idomatic number for special cases of some of these families of digraphs.
Domination of grids has been proved to be a demanding task and with the addition of independence it becomes more challenging. It is known that no grid with $m,n \geq 5$ has an efficient dominating set, also called perfect code, that is, an independent vertex set such that each vertex not in it has exactly one neighbor in that set. So it is interesting to study the existence of independent dominating sets for grids that allow at most two neighbors, such sets are called independent $[1,2]$-sets. In this paper we prove that every grid has an independent $[1,2]$-set, and we develop a dynamic progr…
Given a graph $G = (V,E)$, a vertex $u \in V$ ve-dominates all edges incident to any vertex of $N_G[u]$. A set $S \subseteq V$ is a ve-dominating set if for all edges $e\in E$, there exists a vertex $u \in S$ such that $u$ ve-dominates $e$. Lewis [Ph.D. thesis, 2007] proposed a linear time algorithm for ve-domination problem for trees. In this paper, first we have constructed an example where the proposed algorithm fails. Then we have proposed a linear time algorithm for ve-domination problem in block graphs, which is a superclass of trees. We have also proved that finding minimum ve-dominatin…
We show there is an uncountable number of parallel total perfect codes in the integer lattice graph $Λ$ of $\R^2$. In contrast, there is just one 1-perfect code in $Λ$ and one total perfect code in $Λ$ restricting to total perfect codes of rectangular grid graphs (yielding an asymmetric, Penrose, tiling of the plane). We characterize all cycle products $C_m\times C_n$ with parallel total perfect codes, and the $d$-perfect and total perfect code partitions of $Λ$ and $C_m\times C_n$, the former having as quotient graph the undirected Cayley graphs of $\Z_{2d^2+2d+1}$ with generator set $\{1,2d^…
The aim of this work is to investigate the nonnegative signed domination number $γ^{NN}_s$ with emphasis on regular, ($r+1$)-clique-free graphs and trees. We give lower and upper bounds on $γ^{NN}_s$ for regular graphs and prove that $n/3$ is the best possible upper bound on this parameter for a cubic graph of order $n$, specifically. As an application of the classic theorem of Turán we bound $γ^{NN}_s(G)$ from below, for an ($r+1$)-clique-free graph $G$ and characterize all such graphs for which the equality holds, which corrects and generalizes a result for bipartite graphs in [Electron. J. …
We revisit the problem of determining the independent domination number in hypercubes for which the known upper bound is still not tight for general dimensions. We present here a constructive method to build an independent dominating set $S_n$ for the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$, where $n=2p+1$, $p$ being a positive integer $\ge 1$, provided an independent dominating set $S_p$ for the $p$-dimensional hypercube $Q_p$, is known. The procedure also computes the minimum independent dominating set for all $n=2^k-1$, $k>1$. Finally, we establish that the independent domination number $α_n\leq 3 …
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, $f:V \rightarrow \{0,1,2 \}$ is the Italian dominating function of $G$ if $f$ satisfies $\sum_{u \in N(v)}f(u) \geq 2$ when $f(v)=0$. Denote $w(f)=\sum_{v \in V}f(v)$ as the weight of $f$. Let $V_i=\{v:f(v)=i\},i=0,1,2$, we call $f$ the independent Italian dominating function if $V_1 \cup V_2$ is an independent set. The independent Italian domination number of $G$ is the minimum weight of independent Italian dominating function $f$, denoted by $i_{I}(G)$. We equivalently transform the independent domination problem of the connected block graph $G$ to the induced indepe…
Let $F_1, F_2, ..., F_k$ be graphs with the same vertex set $V$. A subset $S \subseteq V$ is a simultaneous dominating set if for every $i$, $1 \le i \le k$, every vertex of $F_i$ not in $S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$ in $F_i$; that is, the set $S$ is simultaneously a dominating set in each graph $F_i$. The cardinality of a smallest such set is the simultaneous domination number. We present general upper bounds on the simultaneous domination number. We investigate bounds in special cases, including the cases when the factors, $F_i$, are $r$-regular or the disjoint union of copies of $K_r$.…
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ with domination number $γ(G)$. Wang, Yan, Fang, Geng and Tian [Linear Algebra Appl. 607 (2020), 307-318] showed that for any Laplacian eigenvalue $λ$ of $G$ with multiplicity $m_G(λ)$, it holds that $γ(G)\leq n-m_G(λ)$. Using techniques from the theory of star sets, in this work we prove that the same bound holds when $λ$ is an arbitrary adjacency eigenvalue of a non-regular graph, and we characterize the cases of equality. Moreover, we show a result that gives a relationship between start sets and the $p$-domination number, and we apply it to extend t…
A sequence $(v_1,\ldots ,v_k)$ of vertices in a graph $G$ without isolated vertices is called a total dominating sequence if every vertex $v_i$ in the sequence totally dominates at least one vertex that was not totally dominated by $\{v_1,\ldots , v_{i-1}\}$ and $\{v_1,\ldots ,v_k\}$ is a total dominating set of $G$. The length of a shortest such sequence is the total domination number of G ($γ_t(G)$), while the length of a longest such sequence is the Grundy total domination number of $G$ ($γ_{gr}^t(G)$). In this paper we study graphs with equal total and Grundy total domination number. We ch…
