We determine explicit formulas for geodesics (in the Euclidean metric) in the configuration space of ordered pairs (x,x') of points in R^n which satisfy d(x,x')>=epsilon. We interpret this as two or three (depending on the parity of n) geodesic motion-planning rules for this configuration space. In the associated unordered configuration space, we need not prescribe that the points stay apart by epsilon. For this space, with a Euclidean metric, we show that geodesic motion-planning rules correspond to ordinary motion-planning rules on RP^{n-1}.
For smooth test configurations, there always exist C^{1,1} geodesic rays in Kahler metric space parallel to the algebraic ray. The $\yen$ invariant agrees with Futaki invariant, at least under nice assumptions. Explicit examples in Toric cases are calculated. On simple test configurations, Donaldson's correspondence between HCMA solution and holomorphic disc family is extended.
A pair of points in a riemannian manifold makes a secure configuration if the totality of geodesics connecting them can be blocked by a finite set. The manifold is secure if every configuration is secure. We investigate the security of compact, locally symmetric spaces.
We study configurations of immersed curves in surfaces and surfaces in 3-manifolds. Among other results, we show that primitive curves have only finitely many configurations which minimize the number of double points. We give examples of minimal configurations not realized by geodesics in any hyperbolic metric.
This article contains a detailed study, in the toric case, of the test configuration geodesic rays defined by Phong-Sturm. We show that the `Bergman approximations' of Phong-Sturm converge in C^1 to the geodesic ray and that the geodesic ray itself is C^{1,1} and no better. The \kahler metrics associated to the geodesic ray of potentials are discontinuous across certain hypersurfaces and are degenerate on certain open sets. A novelty in the analysis is the connection between Bergman metrics, Bergman kernels and the theory of large deviations.
Geodesic rays of class C^{1,1} are constructed for any test configuration of a positive line bundle L on X using resolution of singularities. The construction reduces to finding a subsolution of the corresponding Monge-Ampere equation. Geometrically, this is accomplished by the use a positive line bundle on the resolution which is trivial outside of the exceptional divisor.
Let $X$ be a compact complex manifold, $L\to X$ an ample line bundle over $X$, and ${\cal H}$ the space of all positively curved metrics on $L$. We show that a pair $(h_0,T)$ consisting of a point $h_0\in {\cal H}$ and a test configuration $T=({\cal L}\to {\cal X}\to {\bf C})$, canonically determines a weak geodesic ray $R(h_0,T)$ in ${\cal H}$ which emanates from $h_0$. Thus a test configuration behaves like a vector field on the space of Kähler potentials ${\cal H}$. We prove that $R$ is non-trivial if the ${\bf C}^\times$ action on $X_0$, the central fiber of $\cal X$, is non-trivial. The r…
In this paper we establish a relationship between geodesic nets and critical points of the distance function. We bound the number of balanced points for certain minimizing geodesic nets on manifolds homeomorphic to the $n$-sphere. We also bound the length of certain minimizing geodesic nets.
Given two points of a Generalized Robertson-Walker spacetime, the existence, multiplicity and causal character of geodesic connecting them is characterized. Conjugate points of such geodesics are related to conjugate points of geodesics on the fiber, and Morse-type relations are obtained. Applications to bidimensional spacetimes and to GRW spacetimes satisfying the timelike convergence condition are also found.
It is shown that the geodesic rays constructed as limits of Bergman geodesics from a test configuration are always of class $C^{1,α}, 0<α<1$. An essential step is to establish that the rays can be extended as solutions of a Dirichlet problem for a Monge-Ampere equation on a Kaehler manifold which is compact.
In this paper we study 1/k-geodesics, those closed geodesics that minimize on any subinterval of length $l(γ)/k$. We employ energy methods to provide a relationship between the 1/k-geodesics and what we define as the balanced points of the uniform energy. We show that classes of balanced points of the uniform energy persist under the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of Riemannian manifolds. Additionally, we relate half-geodesics (1/2-geodesics) to the Grove-Shiohama critical points of the distance function. This relationship affords us the ability to study the behavior of half-geodesics via the we…
In this paper we consider on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ an immersed totally geodesic hypersurface $\Si$ existing together with an immersed submanifold $N$ without focal points. No curvature condition is needed. We obtained several connectedness results relating the topologies of $M$ and $\Si$ which depend on the codimension of $N$.
A well-known Lemma in Riemannian geometry by Klingenberg says that if $x_0$ is a minimum point of the distance function $d(p,\cdot)$ to $p$ in the cut locus $C_p$ of $p$, then either there is a minimal geodesic from $p$ to $x_0$ along which they are conjugate, or there is a geodesic loop at $p$ that smoothly goes through $x_0$. In this paper, we prove that: for any point $q$ and any local minimum point $x_0$ of $F_q(\cdot)=d(p,\cdot)+d(q,\cdot)$ in $C_p$, either $x_0$ is conjugate to $p$ along each minimal geodesic connecting them, or there is a geodesic from $p$ to $q$ passing through $x_0$. …
We obtain Margulis-type asymptotic estimates for the number of free homotopy classes of closed geodesics on certain manifolds without conjugate points. Our results cover all compact surfaces of genus at least 2 without conjugate points.
Helfer in [Pacific J. Math. 164/2 (1994), p. 321--350] was the first to produce an example of a spacelike Lorentzian geodesic with a continuum of conjugate points. In this paper we show the following result: given an interval $[a,b]$ of $IR$ and any closed subset $F$ of $IR$ contained in $]a,b]$, then there exists a Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$ and a spacelike geodesic $γ:[a,b]\to M$ such that $γ(t)$ is conjugate to $γ(a)$ along $γ$ iff $t\in F$.
A Riemannian manifold is said to be uniformly secure if there is a finite number $s$ such that all geodesics connecting an arbitrary pair of points in the manifold can be blocked by $s$ point obstacles. We prove that the number of geodesics with length $\leq T$ between every pair of points in a uniformly secure manifold grows polynomially as $T \to \infty$. We derive from this that a compact Riemannian manifold with no conjugate points whose geodesic flow has positive topological entropy is totally insecure: the geodesics between any pair of points cannot be blocked by a finite number of point…
We show that any two non-conjugate points on a forward or backward complete connected Finsler manifold can be joined by infinitely many geodesics which are not covered by finitely many closed ones, provided that the Betti numbers of the based loop space grow unbounded.
We study the microlocal properties of the geodesic X-ray transform $\mathcal{X}$ on a manifold with boundary allowing the presence of conjugate points. Assuming that there are no self-intersecting geodesics and all conjugate pairs are nonsingular we show that the normal operator $\mathcal{N} = \mathcal{X}^t \circ \mathcal{X}$ can be decomposed as the sum of a pseudodifferential operator of order $-1$ and a sum of Fourier integral operators. We also apply this decomposition to prove inversion of $\mathcal{X}$ is only mildly ill-posed in dimension three or higher.
The paper is a study of geodesic in two-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian metrics. Firstly, the local properties of geodesics in a neighborhood of generic parabolic points are investigated. The equation of the geodesic flow has singularities at such points that leads to a curious phenomenon: geodesics cannot pass through such a point in arbitrary tangential directions, but only in certain directions said to be admissible (the number of admissible directions is generically 1 or 3). Secondly, we study the global properties of geodesics in pseudo-Riemannian metrics possessing differentiable groups of…
In this article, we consider a closed rank one Riemannian manifold $M$ without focal points. Let $P(t)$ be the set of free-homotopy classes containing a closed geodesic on $M$ with length at most $t$, and $\# P(t)$ its cardinality. We obtain the following Margulis-type asymptotic estimates: \[\lim_{t\to \infty}\#P(t)/\frac{e^{ht}}{ht}=1\] where $h$ is the topological entropy of the geodesic flow. In the appendix, we also show that the unique measure of maximal entropy of the geodesic flow has the Bernoulli property.
We revisit an example of a semi-Riemannian geodesic that was discussed by Musso, Pejsachowicz and Portaluri in 2007 to show that not every conjugate point is a bifurcation point. We point out a mistake in their argument, showing that on this geodesic actually every conjugate point is a bifurcation point. Finally, we provide an improved example which yields that the claim in our title is nevertheless true.
We give a definition of weak geodesics on prox-regular subsets of Riemannian manifolds as continuous curves with some weak regularities. Then obtaining a suitable Lipschitz constant of the projection map, we characterize weak geodesics on a prox-regular set with assigned end points as viscosity critical points of the energy functional.
In this article, we study the ergodicity of the geodesic flows on surfaces with no focal points. Let $M$ be a smooth connected and closed surface equipped with a $C^\infty$ Riemannian metric $g$, whose genus $\mathfrak{g} \geq 2$. Suppose that $(M,g)$ has no focal points. We prove that the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of $M$ is ergodic with respect to the Liouville measure, under the assumption that the set of points on $M$ with negative curvature has at most finitely many connected components.
We consider a closed three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifold. The objective of this note is to provide a precise description of the sub-Riemannian geodesics with large initial momenta: we prove that they "spiral around the Reeb orbits", not only in the phase space but also in the configuration space. Our analysis is based on a normal form along any Reeb orbit due to Melrose.
In this paper we show that on a complete Riemannian manifold of negative curvature and dimension $n>1$ every two points which realize a local maximum for the distance function are connected by at least $2n+1$ geometrically distinct geodesic segments (i.e. length minimizing). Using a similar method, we obtain that in the case of non-positive curvature, for every two points with the same property as above the number of connecting distinct geodesic segments is at least $n+1$.
We study conjugate points along homogeneous geodesics in generalized flag manifolds. This is done by analyzing the second variation of the energy of such geodesics. We also give an example of how the homogeneous Ricci flow can evolve in such way to produce conjugate points in the complex projective space $\mathbb{C} P^{2n+1} = Sp(n+1)/({U}(1)\times{Sp}(n))$.
In this article, we consider the geodesic flow on a compact rank $1$ Riemannian manifold $M$ without focal points, whose universal cover is denoted by $X$. On the ideal boundary $X(\infty)$ of $X$, we show the existence and uniqueness of the Busemann density, which is realized via the Patterson-Sullivan measure. Based on the the Patterson-Sullivan measure, we show that the geodesic flow on $M$ has a unique invariant measure of maximal entropy. We also obtain the asymptotic growth rate of the volume of geodesic spheres in $X$ and the growth rate of the number of closed geodesics on $M$. These r…
We present a survey on generic singularities of geodesic flows in smooth signature changing metrics (often called pseudo-Riemannian) in dimension 2. Generically, a pseudo-Riemannian metric on a 2-manifold $S$ changes its signature (degenerates) along a curve $S_0$, which locally separates $S$ into a Riemannian ($R$) and a Lorentzian ($L$) domain. The geodesic flow does not have singularities over $R$ and $L$, and for any point $q \in R \cup L$ and every tangential direction $p$ there exists a unique geodesic passing through the point $q$ with the direction $p$. On the contrary, geodesics canno…
A conjecture of Burns and Knieper asks whether a 2-plane with a metric without conjugate points, and with a geodesic foliation whose lines are at bounded Hausdorff distance, is necessarily flat. We prove this conjecture in two cases: under the hypothesis that the plane admits total curvature, and under the hypothesis of visibility at some point. Along the way, we show that all geodesic line foliations on a Riemannian 2-plane must be homeomorphic to the standard one.
We study the geodesic X-ray transform $X$ on compact Riemannian surfaces with conjugate points. Regardless of the type of the conjugate points, we show that we cannot recover the singularities and therefore, this transform is always unstable (ill-posed). We describe the microlocal kernel of $X$ and relate it to the conjugate locus. We present numerical examples illustrating the cancellation of singularities. We also show that the attenuated X-ray transform is well posed if the attenuation is positive and there are no more than two conjugate points along each geodesic; but still ill-posed, if t…
We show that every forward complete Finsler manifold of infinite fundamental group and not homotopy-equivalent to $S^1$ has infinitely many geometrically distinct geodesics joining any given pair of points $p$ and $q$. In the special case in which $β_1(M;\mathbb{Z})\geq 1$ and $M$ is closed, the number of geometrically distinct geodesics between two points grows at least logarithmically.
The set of totally geodesic representatives of a homotopy class of maps from a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature into a complete Riemannian manifold $N$ with no focal points is path-connected and, when nonempty, equal to the set of energy-minimizing maps in that class. When $N$ is compact, each map from a product $W \times M$ into $N$ is homotopic to a map that's totally geodesic on each $M$-fiber. These results may be used to extend to the case of no focal points a number of splitting theorems of Cao-Cheeger-Rong about manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvat…
Let x and y be two (not necessarily distinct) points on a closed Riemannian manifold M of dimension n. According to a celebrated theorem by J.P. Serre there exist infinitely many geodesics between x and y. The length of the shortest of these geodesics is obviously less than the diameter of M. But what can be said about the length of the other geodesics? We conjecture that for every k there are k geodesics between x and y of length not exceeding kd, where d denotes the diameter of M.This conjecture is obviously true for round spheres and it is not difficult to prove it for all closed Riemannian…
We show that on any translation surface, if a regular point is contained in a simple closed geodesic, then it is contained in infinitely many simple closed geodesics, whose directions are dense in the unit circle. Moreover, the set of points that are not contained in any simple closed geodesic is finite. We also construct explicit examples showing that such points exist. For a surface in any hyperelliptic component, we show that this finite exceptional set is actually empty. The proofs of our results use Apisa's classifications of periodic points and of $\GL(2,\R)$ orbit closures in hyperellip…
In this paper, we study dynamics of geodesic flows over closed surfaces of genus greater than or equal to 2 without focal points. Especially, we prove that there is a large class of potentials having unique equilibrium states, including scalar multiples of the geometric potential, provided the scalar is less than 1. Moreover, we discuss ergodic properties of these unique equilibrium states. We show these unique equilibrium states are Bernoulli, and weighted regular periodic orbits are equidistributed relative to these unique equilibrium states.
From a spray space $S$ on a manifold $M$ we construct a new geometric space $P$ of larger dimension with the following properties: 1. Geodesics in $P$ are in one-to-one correspondence with parallel Jacobi fields of $M$. 2. $P$ is complete if and only if $S$ is complete. 3. If two geodesics in $P$ meet at one point, the geodesics coincide on their common domain, and $P$ has no conjugate points. 4. There exists a submersion $π\colon P \to M$ that maps geodesics in $P$ into geodesics on $M$. Space $P$ is constructed by first taking two complete lifts of spray $S$. This will give a spray $S^{cc}$ …
We analyze the horizon and geodesic structure of a class of 4D off--diagonal metrics with deformed spherical symmetries, which are exact solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations with anholonomic variables. The maximal analytic extension of the ellipsoid type metrics are constructed and the Penrose diagrams are analyzed with respect to adapted frames. We prove that for small deformations (small eccentricities) there are such metrics that the geodesic behaviour is similar to the Schwarzcshild one. We conclude that some vacuum static and stationary ellipsoid configurations may describe black el…
In this paper, we prove that lightlike geodesics of a pseudo-Finsler manifold and its focal points are preserved up to reparametrization by anisotropic conformal changes, using the Chern connection and the anisotropic calculus and the fact that geodesics are critical points of the energy functional and Jacobi fields, the kernel of its index form. This result has applications to the study of Finsler spacetimes.
We prove that for closed surfaces $M$ with Riemannian metrics without conjugate points and genus $\geq 2$ the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle $T^1M$ has a unique measure of maximal entropy. Furthermore, this measure is fully supported on $T^1M$ and the flow is mixing with respect to this measure. We formulate conditions under which this result extends to higher dimensions.
We give a functional analytical proof of the equality between the Maslov index of a semi-Riemannian geodesic and the spectral flow of the path of self-adjoint Fredholm operators obtained from the index form. This fact, together with recent results on the bifurcation for critical points of strongly indefinite functionals (see P. M. Fitzpatrick, J. Pejsachowicz, L. Recht, Spectral Flow and Bifurcation of Strongly Indefinite Functionals Part I. General Theory, J. Funct. Anal. 162 (1) (1999), 52-95.) imply that each non degenerate and non null conjugate (or $P$-focal) point along a semi-Riemannian…
We consider a family of variational problems on a Hilbert manifold parameterized by an open subset of a Banach manifold, and we discuss the genericity of the nondegeneracy condition for the critical points. Based on an idea of B. White, we prove an abstract genericity result that employs the infinite dimensional Sard--Smale theorem. Applications are given by proving the genericity of metrics without degenerate geodesics between fixed endpoints in general (non compact) semi-Riemannian manifolds, in orthogonally split semi-Riemannian manifolds and in globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds. We …
Consider a broken geodesics $α([0,l])$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with boundary of dimension $n\geq 3$. The broken geodesics are unions of two geodesics with the property that they have a common end point. Assume that for every broken geodesic $α([0,l])$ starting at and ending to the boundary $\partial M$ we know the starting point and direction $(α(0),α'(0))$, the end point and direction $(α(l),α'(l))$, and the length $l$. We show that this data determines uniquely, up to an isometry, the manifold $(M,g)$. This result has applications in inverse problems on very heterogeneous me…
We say that a pair of points x and y is secure if there exist a finite set of blocking points such that any geodesic between x and y passes through one of the blocking points. The main point of this paper is to exhibit new examples of blocking phenomena both in the manifold and the billiard table setting. As an approach to this, we study if the product of secure configurations (or manifolds) is also secure. We introduce the concept of midpoint security that imposes that the geodesic reaches a blocking point exactly at its midpoint. We prove that products of midpoint secure configurations are m…
A Carter like constant for the geodesic motion in the $Y(p,q)$ Einstein-Sasaki geometries is presented. This constant is functionally independent with respect to the five known constants for the geometry. Since the geometry is five dimensional and the number of independent constants of motion is at least six, the geodesic equations are superintegrable. We point out that this result applies to the configuration of massless geodesic in $AdS_5\times Y(p,q)$ studied by Benvenuti and Kruczenski, which are matched to long BPS operators in the dual N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory.
In this paper we prove that if the geodesic flow of a {compact or non-compact} complete manifold without conjugate points is of the Anosov type, then the average of the integral of the sectional curvature along the geodesic is negative and away from zero from a uniform time. Moreover, in dimension two, if the manifold has no focal points, then this condition is sufficient to obtain that the geodesic flow is of Anosov type. This sufficient condition will also be used to construct new examples of non-compact surfaces whose geodesic flow is of the Anosov type.
We investigate the number of geodesics between two points $p$ and $q$ on a contact sub-Riemannian manifold M. We show that the count of geodesics on $M$ is controlled by the count on its nilpotent approximation at $p$ (a contact Carnot group). For contact Carnot groups we make the count explicit in exponential coordinates $(x,z) \in \mathbb{R}^{2n} \times \mathbb{R}$ centered at $p$. In this case we prove that for the generic $q$ the number of geodesics $ν(q)$ between $p$ and $q=(x,z)$ satisfies: \[ C_1\frac{|z|}{\|x\|^2} + R_1 \leq ν(q) \leq C_2\frac{|z|}{\|x\|^2} + R_2\] for some constants $…
The horizon and geodesic structure of static configurations generated by anisotropic conformal transforms of the Schwarzschild metric is analyzed. We construct the maximal analytic extension of such off--diagonal vacuum metrics and conclude that for small deformations there are different classes of vacuum solutions of the Einstein equations describing "black ellipsoid" objects. This is possible because, in general, for off--diagonal metrics with deformed non--spherical symmetries and associated anholonomic frames the conditions of the uniqueness black hole theorems do not hold.
