From a spray space $S$ on a manifold $M$ we construct a new geometric space $P$ of larger dimension with the following properties:
1. Geodesics in $P$ are in one-to-one correspondence with parallel Jacobi fields of $M$.
2. $P$ is complete if and only if $S$ is complete.
3. If two geodesics in $P$ meet at one point, the geodesics coincide on their common domain, and $P$ has no conjugate points.
4. There exists a submersion $π\colon P \to M$ that maps geodesics in $P$ into geodesics on $M$.
Space $P$ is constructed by first taking two complete lifts of spray $S$. This will give a spray $S^{cc}$ on the second iterated tangent bundle $TTM$. Then space $P$ is obtained by restricting tangent vectors of geodesics for $S^{cc}$ onto a suitable $(2\dim M+2)$-dimensional submanifold of $TTTM$. Due to the last restriction, space $P$ is not a spray space. However, the construction shows that conjugate points can be removed if we add dimensions and relax assumptions on the geometric structure.
We show that given a point on a Finsler surface, one can always find a neighborhood of the point and isometrically embed this neighborhood into a Finsler torus without conjugate points.
Infinitely many new examples of compact Lorentzian surfaces without conjugate points are given. Further, we study the existence and the stability of this property among Lorentzian metrics with a Killing field. We obtain a new obstruction and prove that the Clifton- Pohl torus and some of our examples are as stable as possible. This shows that in constrast with the Riemannian Hopf theorem, the absence of conjugate points in the Lorentzian setting is neither "special" nor rigid.
We obtain Margulis-type asymptotic estimates for the number of free homotopy classes of closed geodesics on certain manifolds without conjugate points. Our results cover all compact surfaces of genus at least 2 without conjugate points.
What are appropriate geometric conditions ensuring that a complete Riemannian 2-cylinder without conjugate points is flat? Examples with nonpositive curvature show that one has to assume that the ends of the cylinder open sublinearly. We show that sublinear growth of the ends is indeed sufficient if it is measured by the length of horocycles. This is used to extend results by K. Burns and G. Knieper [9], and by H. Koehler [18], where the opening of the ends is measured in terms of shortest noncontractible loops.
In this short note, we prove that the usual $Θ$ function on a Riemannian manifold without conjugate points is uniformly bounded from below. This extends a result of Green in two dimensions. This elementary lemma implies that the Bérard remainder in the Weyl law is valid for a manifold without conjugate points, without any restriction on the dimension.
Let $\mathcal{W}^{n}$ be the class of $C^{\infty }$ complete simply connected $n-$dimensional manifolds without conjugate points. The hyperbolic space as well as Euclidean space are good examples of such manifolds. Let $% W\in \mathcal{W}^{n}$ and let $A$ be a subset of $W$. This article aims at characterization and building convex and starshaped sets in this class from inside. For example, it is proven that, for a compact starshaped set, the convex kernel is the intersection of stars of extreme points only. Also, if a closed unbounded convex set $A$ does not contain a totally geodesic hypersu…
We derive Price inequalities for harmonic forms on manifolds without conjugate points and with a negative Ricci upper bound. The techniques employed in the proof work particularly well for manifolds of non-positive sectional curvature, and in this case we prove a strengthened Price inequality. We employ these inequalities to study the asymptotic behavior of the Betti numbers of coverings of Riemannian manifolds without conjugate points. Finally, we give a vanishing result for $L^{2}$-Betti numbers of closed manifolds without conjugate points.
Existence of a conjugate point in the incompressible Euler flow on a sphere and an ellipsoid is considered. Misiolek (1996) formulated a differential-geometric criterion (we call M-criterion) for the existence of a conjugate point in a fluid flow. In this paper, it is shown that no zonal flow (stationary Euler flow) satisfies M-criterion if the background manifold is a sphere, on the other hand, there are zonal flows satisfy M-criterion if the background manifold is an ellipsoid (even it is sufficiently close to the sphere). The conjugate point is created by the fully nonlinear effect of the i…
We prove that for closed surfaces $M$ with Riemannian metrics without conjugate points and genus $\geq 2$ the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle $T^1M$ has a unique measure of maximal entropy. Furthermore, this measure is fully supported on $T^1M$ and the flow is mixing with respect to this measure. We formulate conditions under which this result extends to higher dimensions.
We introduce the Koenigs lattice, which is a new integrable reduction of the quadrilateral lattice (discrete conjugate net) and provides natural integrable discrete analogue of the Koenigs net. We construct the Darboux-type transformations of the Koenigs lattice and we show permutability of superpositions of such transformations, thus proving integrability of the Koenigs lattice. We also investigate the geometry of the discrete Koenigs transformation. In particular we characterize the Koenigs transformation in terms of an involution determined by a congruence conjugate to the lattice.
We prove that all the Tonelli Hamiltonians defined on the cotangent bundle $T^*\T^n$ of the $n$-dimensional torus that have no conjugate points are $C^0$ integrable, i.e. $T^*\T^n$ is $C^0$ foliated by a family $\Fc$ of invariant $C^0$ Lagrangian graphs. Assuming that the Hamiltonian is $C^\infty$, we prove that there exists a $G_δ$ subset $\Gc$ of $\Fc$ such that the dynamics restricted to every element of $\Gc$ is strictly ergodic. Moreover, we prove that the Lyapunov exponents of every $C^0$ integrable Tonelli Hamiltonian are zero and deduce that the metric and topological entropies vanish.
This note proves that any locally extremal non-self-conjugate geodesic loop in a Riemannian manifold is a closed geodesic. As a consequence, any complete and non-contractible Riemannian manifold with diverging injectivity radii along diverging sequences and without points conjugate to themselves, possesses a minimizing closed geodesic.
Wasserstein distance, especially among symmetric positive-definite matrices, has broad and deep influences on development of artificial intelligence (AI) and other branches of computer science. A natural idea is to describe the geometry of $SPD\left(n\right)$ as a Riemannian manifold endowed with the Wasserstein metric. In this paper, by involving the fiber bundle, we obtain explicit expressions for some locally geometric quantities, including geodesics, exponential maps, the Riemannian connection, Jacobi fields and curvatures. Furthermore, we discuss the behaviour of geodesics and prove that …
In this paper, we are interested in the location of conjugate points along a geodesic in the volumorphism group of a compact three-dimensional manifold without boundary (the configuration space of an ideal fluid). As shown in the author's previous work, these are typically pathological, i.e., they can occur in clusters along a geodesic, unlike on finite-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. (This phenomenon does not occur for the volumorphism groups of two-dimensional manifolds, which are known to have discrete conjugate points along any geodesic by Ebin-Misiolek-Preston.) We give an explicit algo…
Two fluid configurations along a flow are conjugate if there is a one parameter family of geodesics (fluid flows) joining them to infinitesimal order. Geometrically, they can be seen as a consequence of the (infinite dimensional) group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms having sufficiently strong positive curvatures which `pull' nearby flows together. Physically, they indicate a form of (transient) stability in the configuration space of particle positions: a family of flows starting with the same configuration deviate initially and subsequently re-converge (resonate) with each other at some…
A point source of light is placed inside an oval. The $n$-th caustic by reflection is the envelope of the light rays emanating from the light source after $n$ reflections off the curve. We show that each of these caustics, for a generic point light source, has at least 4 cusps. This is a billiard variation on Jacobi's Last Geometric Statement, concerning the number of cusps of the conjugate locus of a point on a convex surface. We present various proofs, using different ideas, including the curve shortening flow and Legendrian knot theory.
We investigate the problem of the stability of the number of conjugate or focal points (counted with multiplicity) along a semi-Riemannian geodesic $γ$. For a Riemannian or a non spacelike Lorentzian geodesic, such number is equal to the intersection number (Maslov index) of a continuous curve with a subvariety of codimension one of the Lagrangian Grassmannian of a symplectic space. Such intersection number is proven to be stable in a large variety of circumstances. In the general semi-Riemannian case, under suitable hypotheses this number is equal to an algebraic count of the multiplicities o…
