In this paper we study a class of \emph{self-consistent dynamical systems}, self-consistent in the sense that the discrete time dynamics is different in each step depending on current statistics. The general framework admits popular examples such as coupled map systems. Motivated by an example of M. Blank, we concentrate on a special case where the dynamics in each step is a $β$-map with some $β\geq 2$. Included in the definition of $β$ is a parameter $\varepsilon > 0$ controlling the strength of self-consistency. We show such a self-consistent system which has a unique absolutely continuous invariant measure (acim) for $\varepsilon=0$, but at least two for any $\varepsilon > 0$. With a slight modification, we transform this system into one which produces a phase transition-like behavior: it has a unique acim for $0< \varepsilon < \varepsilon^*$, and multiple for sufficiently large values of $\varepsilon$. We discuss the stability of the invariant measures by the help of computer simulations employing the numerical representation of the self-consistent transfer operator.
In this paper, we study the SRB measures of generalized horseshoe map. We prove that under the conditions of transversality and fatness, the SRB measure is actually absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure.
Let $IET(\mathbb{S}^{1})$ be the group of interval exchange transformation of $\mathbb{S}^{1}$ and $\mathcal{AC}_{+}(\mathbb{S}^{1})$ be the group of absolutely continuous preserving orientation bijection with inverse absolutely continuous. We denote by $\mathcal{ACI}$ the group generated by $IET(\mathbb{S}^{1})$ and $\mathcal{AC}_{+}(\mathbb{S}^{1})$. Given a suitable distance on $\mathcal{ACI}$, we classify all continuous homomorphisms $ρ:\mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{ACI}$. More precisely, $ρ$ is conjugated to a continuous homomorphism $\hatρ:\mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{AC}_{+}(\uplus_{i}(\mathbb{S}^…
A class of piecewise affine hyperbolic maps on a bounded subset of the plane is considered. It is shown that if a map from this class is sufficiently area-expanding then almost surely this map has an absolutely continuous invariant measure.
For piecewise $C^1$ interval maps possibly containing critical points and discontinuities with negative Schwarzian derivative, under two summability conditions on the growth of the derivative and recurrence along critical orbits, we prove the nonexistence of wandering intervals, the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures, and the bounded backward contraction property. The proofs are based on the method of proving the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures of unimodal map, developed by Nowicki and van Strien.
For a large class of nonuniformly expanding maps of $\Bbb R^m$, with indifferent fixed points and unbounded distorsion and non necessarily Markovian, we construct an absolutely continuous invariant measure. We extend to our case techniques previously used for expanding maps on quasi-Hölder spaces. We give general conditions and provide examples to which apply our result.
We establish sharp results on the modulus of continuity of the distribution of the spectral measure for multi-frequency Schrodinger operators with Diphantine frequencies and small analytic potentials.
We show that for entire maps of the form $z \mapsto λ\exp(z)$ such that the orbit of zero is bounded and such that Lebesgue almost every point is transitive, no absolutely continuous invariant probability measure can exist. This answers a long-standing open problem.
We prove that for certain partially hyperbolic skew-products, non-uniform hyperbolicity along the leaves implies existence of a finite number of ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures which describe the asymptotics of almost every point. The main technical tool is an extension for sequences of maps of a result of de Melo and van Strien relating hyperbolicity to recurrence properties of orbits. As a consequence of our main result, we also obtain a partial extension of Keller's theorem guaranteeing the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures for non-uniformly …
It is well-known that every multicritical circle map without periodic orbits admits a unique invariant Borel probability measure which is purely singular with respect to Lebesgue measure. Can such a map leave invariant an infinite, $σ$-finite invariant measure which is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure? In this paper, using an old criterion due to Katznelson, we show that the answer to this question is no.
We show that for a large class of maps on manifolds of arbitrary finite dimension, the existence of a Gibbs-Markov-Young structure (with Lebesgue as the reference measure) is a necessary as well as sufficient condition for the existence of an invariant probability measure which is absolutely continuous measure (with respect to Lebesgue) and for which all Lyapunov exponents are positive.
We provide an abstract framework for the study of certain spectral properties of parabolic systems; specifically, we determine under which general conditions to expect the presence of absolutely continuous spectral measures. We use these general conditions to derive results for spectral properties of time-changes of unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces of semisimple groups regarding absolutely continuous spectrum as well as maximal spectral type; the time-changes of the horocycle flow are special cases of this general category of flows. In addition we use the general conditions to derive spec…
It is shown that for a non-singular conservative shift on a topologically mixing Markov subshift with Doeblin Condition the only possible absolutely continuous shift-invariant measure is a Markov measure. Moreover, if it is not equivalent to a homogeneous Markov measure then the shift is of Krieger-type $\mathrm{III}_1$. A criterion for equivalence of Markov measures is included.
We prove that the quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator with a finitely differentiable potential has purely absolutely continuous spectrum for all phases if the frequency is Diophantine and the potential is sufficiently small in the corresponding $C^k$ topology. This is based on a refined quantitative $C^{k,k_0}$ almost reducibility theorem which only requires a quite low initial regularity ``$k>14τ+2$'' and much of the regularity ``$k_0\leq k-2τ-2$'' is conserved in the end, where $τ$ is the Diophantine constant of the frequency.
We construct examples of $C^{1}$ Anosov diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ which are of Krieger type ${\rm III}_{1}$ with respect to Lebesgue measure. This shows that the Gurevic Oseledec phenomena that conservative $C^{1+α}$ Anosov diffeomorphisms have a smooth invariant measure does not hold true in the $C^{1}$ setting.
Let $M$ be a smooth compact manifold (maybe with boundary, maybe disconnected) of any dimension $d \ge 1$. We consider the set of $C^1$ maps $f:M\to M$ which have no absolutely continuous (with respect to Lebesgue) invariant probability measure. We show that this is a residual (dense $G_δ) set in the $C^1$ topology. In the course of the proof, we need a generalization of the usual Rokhlin tower lemma to non-invariant measures. That result may be of independent interest.
We show that for the C^1-open set of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms constructed in (M. Shub and A. Wilkinson, "Pathological foliations and removable zero exponents," Invent. math. 139 (2000) 3, 495-508), Lebesgue measure on the 3-torus decomposes as atomic measure along the leaves of the central foliation.
One of the simplest non-Pisot substitution rules is investigated in its geometric version as a tiling with intervals of natural length as prototiles. Via a detailed renormalisation analysis of the pair correlation functions, we show that the diffraction measure cannot comprise any absolutely continuous component. This implies that the diffraction, apart from a trivial Bragg peak at the origin, is purely singular continuous. En route, we derive various geometric and algebraic properties of the underlying Delone dynamical system, which we expect to be relevant in other such systems as well.
We prove existence of (at most denumerable many) absolutely continuous invariant probability measures for random one-dimensional dynamical systems with asymptotic expansion. If the rate of expansion (Lyapunov exponents) is bounded away from zero, we obtain finitely many ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures, describing the asymptotics of almost every point. We also prove a similar result for higher-dimensional random non-uniformly expanding dynamical systems. The results are consequences of the construction of such measures for skew-products with essentially arbitrary ba…
Consider piecewise linear Lorenz maps on $[0, 1]$ of the following form \[ f_{a,b,c}(x)= {ll} ax+1-ac & x \in [0, c) b(x-c) & x \in (c, 1].\] We prove that $f_{a,b,c}$ admits an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure (acim) $μ$ with respect to the Lebesgue measure if and only if $f_{a,b,c}(0) \le f_{a,b,c}(1)$, i.e. $ac+(1-c)b \ge 1$. The acim is unique and ergodic unless $f_{a,b,c}$ is conjugate to a rational rotation. The equivalence between the acim and the Lebesgue measure is also fully investigated via the renormalization theory.
Let $f : [0, 1] \to [0, 1]$ be a piecewise expanding unimodal map of class $C^{k+1}$, with $k \geq 1$, and $μ= ρdx$ the (unique) SRB measure associated to it. We study the regularity of $ρ$. In particular, points $\mathcal{N}$ where $ρ$ is not differentiable has zero Hausdorff dimension, but is uncountable if the critical orbit of $f$ is dense. This improves on a work of Szewc (1984). We also obtain results about higher orders of differentiability of $ρ$ in the sense of Whitney.
We consider the non autonomous dynamical system $\{τ_{n}\},$ where $τ_{n}$ is a continuous map $X\rightarrow X,$ and $X$ is a compact metric space. We assume that $\{τ_{n}\}$ converges uniformly to $τ.$ The inheritance of chaotic properties as well as topological entropy by $τ$ from the sequence $\{τ_{n}\}$ has been studied in \cite{Can1, Can2, Li,Ste,Zhu}. In \cite{You} the generalization of SRB\ measures to non-autonomous systems has been considered. In this paper we study absolutely continuous invariant measures (acim) for non autonomous systems. After generalizing the Krylov-Bogoliubov The…
Let the map $f:[-1,1]\to[-1,1]$ have a.c.i.m. $ρ$ (absolutely continuous $f$-invariant measure with respect to Lebesgue). Let $δρ$ be the change of $ρ$ corresponding to a perturbation $X=δf\circ f^{-1}$ of $f$. Formally we have, for differentiable $A$, $$ δρ(A)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty\intρ(dx) X(x){d\over dx}A(f^nx) $$ but this expression does not converge in general. For $f$ real-analytic and Markovian in the sense of covering $(-1,1)$ $m$ times, and assuming an {\it analytic expanding} condition, we show that $$λ\mapstoΨ(λ)=\sum_{n=0}^\inftyλ^n \intρ(dx) X(x){d\over dx}A(f^nx) $$ is meromorphic in…
We show that a dissipative, ergodic measure preserving transformation of a sigma-finite, non-atomic measure space always has many non-proportional, absolutely continuous, invariant measures and is ergodic with respect to each one of these.
We establish sharp results on the modulus of continuity of the distribution of the spectral measure for one-frequency Schrodinger operators with Diophantine frequencies in the region of absolutely continuous spectrum. More precisely, we establish 1/2-Holder continuity near almost reducible energies (an essential support of absolutely continuous spectrum). For non-perturbatively small potentials (and for the almost Mathieu operator with subcritical coupling), our results apply for all energies.
Relying on results due to Shmerkin and Solomyak, we show that outside a $0$-dimensional set of parameters, for every planar homogeneous self-similar measure $ν$, with strong separation, dense rotations and dimension greater than $1$, there exists $q>1$ such that $\{P_{z}ν\}_{z\in S}\subset L^{q}(\mathbb{R})$. Here $S$ is the unit circle and $P_{z}w=\left\langle z,w\right\rangle $ for $w\in\mathbb{R}^{2}$. We then study such measures. For instance, we show that $ν$ is dimension conserving in each direction and that the map $z\rightarrow P_{z}ν$ is continuous with respect to the weak topology of…
Consider a dynamical system $T:\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}^{d} \rightarrow \mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}^{d} $ given by $ T(x,y) = (E(x), C(y) + f(x))$, where $E$ is a linear expanding map of $\mathbb{T}$, $C$ is a linear contracting map of $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $f$ is in $C^2(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R}^d)$. We prove that if $T$ is volume expanding and $u\geq d$, then for every $E$ there exists an open set $\mathcal{U}$ of pairs $(C,f)$ for which the corresponding dynamic $T$ admits an absolutely continuous invariant probability. A geometrical characteristic of transversality between self-intersections …
We identify a class of hyperbolic transcendental entire maps and we prove that some of its elements generate a class of potentials for which exhibit a conformal and invariant probability Gibbs measure. The methods and techniques from the thermodynamic formalism can be extended to this class of potentials. To complement this study we highlight that the dynamics of such a map on some subset of the Julia set is conjugated to the shift map over a code space with countable alphabet and the euclidean metric on the complex plane induces a metric on the symbolic space which is not compatible with the …
In this paper, we prove that for any $d$-frequency analytic quasiperiodic Schrödinger operator, if the frequency is weak Liouvillean, and the potential is small enough, then the corresponding operator has absolutely continuous spectrum. Moreover, in the case $d=2$, we even establish the existence of ac spectrum under small potential and some super-Liouvillean frequency, and this result is optimal due to a recent counterexample of Avila and Jitomirskaya.
We consider standard and extended CMV matrices with small quasi-periodic Verblunsky coefficients and show that on their essential spectrum, all spectral measures are purely absolutely continuous. This answers a question of Barry Simon from 2005.
We show that sweeping processes with possibly non-convex prox-regular constraints generate a strongly continuous input-output mapping in the space of absolutely continuous functions. Under additional smoothness assumptions on the constraint we prove the local Lipschitz continuity of the input-output mapping. Using the Banach contraction principle, we subsequently prove that also the solution mapping associated with the state-dependent problem is locally Lipschitz continuous.
Modifying Rudin's original construction of the Rudin-Shapiro sequence, we derive a new substitution-based sequence with purely absolutely continuous diffraction spectrum.
By generalising Rudin's construction of an aperiodic sequence, we derive new substitution-based structures which have purely absolutely continuous diffraction and mixed dynamical spectrum, with absolutely continuous and pure point parts. We discuss several examples, including a construction based on Fourier matrices which yields constant-length substitutions for any length.
We prove that the spectrum of the almost Mathieu operator is absolutely continuous if and only if the coupling is subcritical. This settles Problem 6 of Barry Simon's list of Schrödinger operator problems for the twenty-first century.
We show how to turn the question of the absolute continuity of Bernoulli convolutions into one of counting the growth of the number of overlaps in the system. When the contraction parameter is a hyperbolic algebraic integer, we turn this question of absolute continuity into a question involving the ergodic theory of cocycles over domain exchange transformations.
Let $I=[0,1]$ and consider disjoint closed regions $G_{1},....,G_{n}$ in $% I\times I$ and subintervals $I_{1},......,I_{n},$ such that $G_{i}$ projects onto $I_{i.}$ We define the lower and upper maps $τ_{1},$ $τ_{2}$ by the lower and upper boundaries of $G_{i},i=1,....,n,$ respectively. We assume $τ_{1}$, $τ_{2}$ to be piecewise monotonic and preserving continuous invariant measures $μ_{1}$ and $μ_{2}$, respectively. Let $% F^{(1)}$ and $F^{(2)}$ be the distribution functions of $μ_{1}$ and $μ_{2}.$ The main results shows that for any convex combination $F$ of $% F^{(1)} $ and $F^{(2)}$ we c…
A scattering zipper is a system obtained by concatenation of scattering events with equal even number of incoming and out going channels. The associated scattering zipper operator is the unitary equivalent of Jacobi matrices with matrix entries. For infinite identical events and random phases, Lyapunov exponents positivity is proved and yields to the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum.
Quasiperiodic tilings are often considered as structure models of quasicrystals. In this context, it is important to study the nature of the diffraction measures for tilings. In this article, we investigate the diffraction measures for S-adic tilings in R^d, which are constructed from a family of geometric substitution rules. In particular, we firstly give a sufficient condition for the absolutely continuous component of the diffraction measure for an S-adic tiling to be zero. Next, we prove this sufficient condition for "almost all" binary block-substitution cases and thus prove the absence o…
In this article, we study algebraic dynamical pairs $(f,a)$ parametrized by an irreducible quasi-projective curve $Λ$ having an absolutely continuous bifurcation measure. We prove that, if $f$ is non-isotrivial and $(f,a)$ is unstable, this is equivalent to the fact that $f$ is a family of Lattès maps. To do so, we prove the density of transversely prerepelling parameters in the bifucation locus of $(f,a)$ and a similarity property, at any transversely prerepelling parameter $λ_0$, between the measure $μ_{f,a}$ and the maximal entropy measure of $f_{λ_0}$. We also establish an equivalent resul…
We prove for the square Fibonacci Hamiltonian that the density of states measure is absolutely continuous for almost all pairs of small coupling constants. This is obtained from a new result we establish about the absolute continuity of convolutions of measures arising in hyperbolic dynamics with exact-dimensional measures.
The absolutely continuous spectrum of an ergodic family of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators is completely determined by the Lyapunov exponent as shown by Ishii, Kotani and Pastur. Moreover, the part of the theory developed by Kotani gives powerful tools for proving the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum, the presence of absolutely continuous spectrum, and even the presence of purely absolutely continuous spectrum. We review these results and their recent applications to a number of problems: the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum for rough potentials, the absence of absolute…
The pair correlations of primitive inflation rules are analysed via their exact renormalisation relations. We introduce the inflation displacement algebra that is generated by the Fourier matrix of the inflation and deduce various consequences of its structure. Moreover, we derive a sufficient criterion for the absence of absolutely continuous diffraction components, as well as a necessary criterion for its presence. This is achieved via estimates for the Lyapunov exponents of the Fourier matrix cocycle of the inflation rule. We also discuss some consequences for the spectral measures of such …
