Let the map $f:[-1,1]\to[-1,1]$ have a.c.i.m. $ρ$ (absolutely continuous $f$-invariant measure with respect to Lebesgue). Let $δρ$ be the change of $ρ$ corresponding to a perturbation $X=δf\circ f^{-1}$ of $f$. Formally we have, for differentiable $A$, $$ δρ(A)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty\intρ(dx) X(x){d\over dx}A(f^nx) $$ but this expression does not converge in general. For $f$ real-analytic and Markovian in the sense of covering $(-1,1)$ $m$ times, and assuming an {\it analytic expanding} condition, we show that $$λ\mapstoΨ(λ)=\sum_{n=0}^\inftyλ^n \intρ(dx) X(x){d\over dx}A(f^nx) $$ is meromorphic in ${\bf C}$, and has no pole at $λ=1$. We can thus formally write $δρ(A)=Ψ(1)$.
For piecewise $C^1$ interval maps possibly containing critical points and discontinuities with negative Schwarzian derivative, under two summability conditions on the growth of the derivative and recurrence along critical orbits, we prove the nonexistence of wandering intervals, the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures, and the bounded backward contraction property. The proofs are based on the method of proving the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures of unimodal map, developed by Nowicki and van Strien.
In this paper we study the set of Li-Yorke $d$-tuples and its $d$-dimensional Lebesgue measure for interval maps $T\colon [0,1] \to [0,1]$. If a topologically mixing $T$ preserves an absolutely continuous probability measure 9with respect to Lebesgue), then the $d$-tuples have Lebesgue full measure, but if $T$ preserves an infinite absolutely continuous measure, the situation becomes more interesting. Taking the family of Manneville-Pomeau maps as example, we show that for any $d \ge 2$, it is possible that the set of Li-Yorke $d$-tuples has full Lebesgue measure, but the set of Li-Yorke $d+1$…
Let $IET(\mathbb{S}^{1})$ be the group of interval exchange transformation of $\mathbb{S}^{1}$ and $\mathcal{AC}_{+}(\mathbb{S}^{1})$ be the group of absolutely continuous preserving orientation bijection with inverse absolutely continuous. We denote by $\mathcal{ACI}$ the group generated by $IET(\mathbb{S}^{1})$ and $\mathcal{AC}_{+}(\mathbb{S}^{1})$. Given a suitable distance on $\mathcal{ACI}$, we classify all continuous homomorphisms $ρ:\mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{ACI}$. More precisely, $ρ$ is conjugated to a continuous homomorphism $\hatρ:\mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{AC}_{+}(\uplus_{i}(\mathbb{S}^…
One of the simplest non-Pisot substitution rules is investigated in its geometric version as a tiling with intervals of natural length as prototiles. Via a detailed renormalisation analysis of the pair correlation functions, we show that the diffraction measure cannot comprise any absolutely continuous component. This implies that the diffraction, apart from a trivial Bragg peak at the origin, is purely singular continuous. En route, we derive various geometric and algebraic properties of the underlying Delone dynamical system, which we expect to be relevant in other such systems as well.
We prove that, under a mild summability condition on the growth of the derivative on critical orbits any piecewise monotone interval map possibly containing discontinuities and singularities with infinite derivative (cusp map) admits an ergodic invariant probability measures which is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure.
It is known that Iterated Function Systems generated by orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the unit interval admit a unique invariant measure on $(0,1)$. The setup for this result is the positivity of Lyapunov exponents at both fixed points and the minimality of the induced action. With the additional requirement of continuous differentiability of maps on a fixed neighborhood of $\{0,1\}$, we present a metric in the space of such systems, which renders it complete. Using then a classical argument (and an alternative uniqueness proof), we show that almost singular invariant measures are a…
We study parametrised families of piecewise expanding interval mappings $T_a \colon [0,1] \to [0,1]$ with absolutely continuous invariant measures $μ_a$ and give sufficient conditions for a point $X(a)$ to be typical with respect to $(T_a, μ_a)$ for almost all parameters $a$. This is similar to a result by D. Schnellmann, but with different assumptions.
We prove that multimodal maps with an absolutely continuous invariant measure have exponential return time statistics around a.e. point. We also show a `polynomial Gibbs property' for these systems, and that the convergence to the entropy in the Ornstein-Weiss formula has normal fluctuations. These results are also proved for equilibrium states of some Hoelder potentials.
We consider intermittent maps T of the interval, with an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure μ. Kim showed that there exists a sequence of intervals A_n such that \sum μ(A_n)=\infty, but \{A_n\} does not satisfy the dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemma, i.e., for almost every x, the set \{n : T^n(x)\in A_n\} is finite. If \sum \Leb(A_n)=\infty, we prove that \{A_n\} satisfies the Borel-Cantelli lemma. Our results apply in particular to some maps T whose correlations are not summable.
We analyze the two-point motions of iterated function systems on the unit interval generated by expanding and contracting affine maps, where the expansion and contraction rates are determined by a pair $(M,N)$ of integers. This dynamics depends on the Lyapunov exponent. For a negative Lyapunov exponent we establish synchronization, meaning convergence of orbits with different initial points. For a vanishing Lyapunov exponent we establish intermittency, where orbits are close for a set of iterates of full density, but are intermittently apart. For a positive Lyapunov exponent we show the existe…
In this paper we give a criterion for a special flow to be not isomorphic to its inverse which is a refine of a result in \cite{Fr-Ku-Le}. We apply this criterion to special flows $T^f$ built over ergodic interval exchange transformations $T:[0,1)\to[0,1)$ (IETs) and under piecewise absolutely continuous roof functions $f:[0,1)\to\mathbb{R}_+$. We show that for almost every IET $T$ if $f$ is absolutely continuous over exchanged intervals and has non-zero sum of jumps then the special flow $T^f$ is not isomorphic to its inverse. The same conclusion is valid for a typical piecewise constant roof…
Polygonal slap maps are piecewise affine expanding maps of the interval obtained by projecting the sides of a polygon along their normals onto the perimeter of the polygon. These maps arise in the study of polygonal billiards with non-specular reflections laws. We study the absolutely continuous invariant probabilities of the slap maps for several polygons, including regular polygons and triangles. We also present a general method for constructing polygons with slap maps having more than one ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability.
We derive new variants of the quantitative Borel--Cantelli lemma and apply them to analysis of statistical properties for some dynamical systems. We consider intermittent maps of $(0,1]$ which have absolutely continuous invariant probability measures. In particular, we prove that every sequence of intervals with left endpoints uniformly separated from zero is the strong Borel--Cantelli sequence with respect to such map and invariant measure.
We give conditions that characterize the existence of an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure for a degree one $C^2$ endomorphism of the circle which is bimodal, such that all its periodic orbits are repelling, and such that both boundaries of its rotation interval are irrational numbers. Those conditions are satisfied when the boundary points of the rotation interval belong to a Diophantine class. In particular they hold for Lebesgue almost every rotation interval. The measure obtained is a global physical measure, and it is hyperbolic.
Let $T$ be a piecewise expanding interval map and $T_H$ be an abstract perturbation of $T$ into an interval map with a hole. Given a number $\ell$, $0<\ell<1$, we compute an upper-bound on the size of a hole needed for the existence of an absolutely continuous conditionally invariant measure (accim) with escape rate not greater than $-\ln(1-\ell)$. The two main ingredients of our approach are Ulam's method and an abstract perturbation result of Keller and Liverani.
We introduce the Markov extension, represented schematically as a tower, to the study of dynamical systems with holes. For tower maps with small holes, we prove the existence of conditionally invariant probability measures which are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure (abbreviated a.c.c.i.m.). We develop restrictions on the Lebesgue measure of the holes and simple conditions on the dynamics of the tower which ensure existence and uniqueness in a class of Holder continuous densities. We then use these results to study the existence and properties of a.c.c.i.m. for expanding m…
Consider a piecewise smooth expanding map of the interval possessing several invariant subintervals and the same number of ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures (ACIMs). After this system is perturbed to make the subintervals lose their invariance in such a way that there is a unique ACIM, we show how to approximate the diffusion coefficient for an observable of bounded variation by the diffusion coefficient of a related continuous time Markov chain.
We investigate the prevalence of Li-Yorke pairs for $C^2$ and $C^3$ multimodal maps $f$ with non-flat critical points. We show that every measurable scrambled set has zero Lebesgue measure and that all strongly wandering sets have zero Lebesgue measure, as does the set of pairs of asymptotic (but not asymptotically periodic) points. If $f$ is topologically mixing and has no Cantor attractor, then typical (w.r.t. two-dimensional Lebesgue measure) pairs are Li-Yorke; if additionally $f$ admits an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure (acip), then typical pairs have a dense orbit fo…
We consider a piecewise smooth expanding map of the interval possessing two invariant subsets of positive Lebesgue measure and exactly two ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures (ACIMs). When this system is perturbed slightly to make the invariant sets merge, we describe how the unique ACIM of the perturbed map can be approximated by a convex combination of the two initial ergodic ACIMs.
Let $I\subset\mathbb{R}$ be an interval and $T_a:[0,1]\to[0,1]$, $a\in I$, a one-parameter family of piecewise expanding maps such that for each $a\in I$ the map $T_a$ admits a unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure $μ_a$. We establish sufficient conditions on such a one-parameter family such that a given point $x\in[0,1]$ is typical for $μ_a$ for a full Lebesgue measure set of parameters $a$, i.e. $$ \frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=0}^{n-1}δ_{T_a^i(x)} \overset{\text{weak-}*}{\longrightarrow}μ_a,\qquad\text{as} n\to\infty, $$ for Lebesgue almost every $a\in I$. In particular, we consid…
By using a suitable Banach space on which we let the transfer operator act, we make a detailed study of the ergodic theory of a unimodal map $f$ of the interval in the Misiurewicz case. We show in particular that the absolutely continuous invariant measure $ρ$ can be written as the sum of 1/square root spikes along the critical orbit, plus a continuous background. We conclude by a discussion of the sense in which the map $f\mapstoρ$ may be differentiable.
We study a one-parameter family of interval maps $\{T_α\}_{α\in[1,β]}$, with $β$ the golden mean, defined on $[-1,1]$ by $T_α(x)=β^{1+|t|}x-tβα$ where $t\in\{-1,0,1\}$. For each $T_α,\ α>1$, we construct its unique, absolutely continuous invariant measure and show that on an open, dense subset of parameters $α$, the corresponding density is a step function with finitely many jumps. We give an explicit description of the maximal intervals of parameters on which the density has at most the same number of jumps. A main tool in our analysis is the phenomenon of matching, where the orbits of the le…
We develop a quenched thermodynamic formalism for open random dynamical systems generated by finitely branched, piecewise-monotone mappings of the interval. The openness refers to the presence of holes in the interval, which terminate trajectories once they enter; the holes may also be random. Our random driving is generated by an invertible, ergodic, measure-preserving transformation $σ$ on a probability space $(Ω,\mathscr{F},m)$. For each $ω\inΩ$ we associate a piecewise-monotone, surjective map $T_ω:I\to I$, and a hole $H_ω\subset I$; the map $T_ω$, the random potential $φ_ω$, and the hole …
We introduce a parametrised family of maps $\{S_η\}_{η\in [1,2]}$, called symmetric doubling maps, defined on $[-1,1]$ by $S_η(x)=2x-dη$, where $d\in \{-1,0,1 \}$. Each map $S_η$ generates binary expansions with digits $-1$, 0 and 1. We study the frequency of the digit 0 in typical expansions as a function of the parameter $η$. The transformations $S_η$ have a natural ergodic invariant measure $μ_η$ that is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. The frequency of the digit 0 is related to the measure $μ_η([-\frac12,\frac12])$ by the Ergodic Theorem. We show that the density of …
Let $f_{i},$ $i=1,2$ be piecewise-smooth $C^{1}$ circle homeomorphisms with two break points, $\log Df_{i},$ $i=1,2$ are absolutely continuous on each continuity intervals of $Df_{i}$ and $D\log Df_{i}\in L^{p}$ for some $p>1.$ Suppose, the jump ratios of $f_{1} $ and $f_{2} $ at their break points do not coincide but have the same total jumps (i.e. the product of jump ratios) and identical irrational rotation number of bounded type. Then the conjugation $h$ between $f_{1} $ and $f_{2} $ is a singular function, i.e. it is continuous on $S^1,$ but $Dh(x)=0$ a.e. with respect to Lebesgue measure…
We prove that any C^{1+} transformation, possibly with a (non-flat) critical or singular region, admits an invariant probability measure absolutely continuous with respect to any expanding measure whose Jacobian satisfies a mild distortion condition. This is an extension to arbitrary dimension of a famous theorem of Keller for maps of the interval with negative Schwarzian derivative. We also show how to construct an induced Markov map F such that every expanding probability of the initial transformation lifts to an invariant probability of F. The induced time is bounded at each point by the co…
We investigate the properties of absolutely continuous invariant probability measures (ACIPs), especially those measures with bounded variation densities, for piecewise area preserving maps (PAPs) on $\mathbb{R}^d$. This class of maps unifies piecewise isometries (PWIs) and piecewise hyperbolic maps where Lebesgue measure is locally preserved. Using a functional analytic approach, we first explore the relationship between topological transitivity and uniqueness of ACIPs, and then give an approach to construct invariant measures with bounded variation densities for PWIs. Our results "partially"…
We analyze some properties of maximizing stationary Markov probabilities on the Bernoulli space $[0,1]^\mathbb{N}$, More precisely, we consider ergodic optimization for a continuous potential $A$, where $A: [0,1]^\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}$ which depends only on the two first coordinates. We are interested in finding stationary Markov probabilities $μ_\infty$ on $ [0,1]^\mathbb{N}$ that maximize the value $ \int A d μ,$ among all stationary Markov probabilities $μ$ on $[0,1]^\mathbb{N}$. This problem correspond in Statistical Mechanics to the zero temperature case for the interaction described b…
We study the family of quadratic maps f_a(x) = 1 - ax^2 on the interval [-1,1] with a between 0 and 2. When small holes are introduced into the system, we prove the existence of an absolutely continuous conditionally invariant measure using the method of Markov extensions. The measure has a density which is bounded away from zero and is analogous to the density for the corresponding closed system. These results establish the exponential escape rate of Lebesgue measure from the system, despite the contraction in a neighborhood of the critical point of the map. We also prove convergence of the c…
We exhibit an explicit full measure class of minimal interval exchange maps T for which the cohomological equation $Ψ-Ψ\circ T=Φ$ has a bounded solution $Ψ$ provided that the datum $Φ$ belongs to a finite codimension subspace of the space of functions having on each interval a derivative of bounded variation. The class of interval exchange maps is characterized in terms of a diophantine condition of ``Roth type'' imposed to an acceleration of the Rauzy--Veech--Zorich continued fraction expansion associated to T. CONTENTS 0. Introduction 1. The continued fraction algorithm for interval exchange…
Let $T_{f}$ be a circle homeomorphism with two break points $a_{b},c_{b}$ and irrational rotation number $\varrho_{f}$. Suppose that the derivative $Df$ of its lift $f$ is absolutely continuous on every connected interval of the set $S^{1}\backslash\{a_{b},c_{b}\}$, that $DlogDf \in L^{1}$ and the product of the jump ratios of $ Df $ at the break points is nontrivial, i.e. $\frac{Df_{-}(a_{b})}{Df_{+}(a_{b})}\frac{Df_{-}(c_{b})}{Df_{+}(c_{b})}\neq1$. We prove that the unique $T_{f}$- invariant probability measure $μ_{f}$ is then singular with respect to Lebesgue measure $l$ on $S^{1}$.
In this paper, we establish a coupling lemma for standard families in the setting of piecewise expanding interval maps with countably many branches. Our method merely requires that the expanding map satisfies Chernov's one-step expansion at $q$-scale and eventually covers a magnet interval. Therefore, our approach is particularly powerful for maps whose inverse Jacobian has low regularity and those who does not satisfy the big image property. The main ingredients of our coupling method are two crucial lemmas: the growth lemma in terms of the characteristic $\cZ$ function and the covering ratio…
We consider the multifractal structure of the Bernoulli convolution $ν_λ$, where $λ^{-1}$ is a Salem number in $(1,2)$. Let $τ(q)$ denote the $L^q$ spectrum of $ν_λ$. We show that if $α\in [τ'(+\infty), τ'(0+)]$, then the level set $$E(α):={x\in \R:\; \lim_{r\to 0}\frac{\log ν_λ([x-r, x+r])}{\log r}=α}$$ is non-empty and $\dim_HE(α)=τ^*(α)$, where $τ^*$ denotes the Legendre transform of $τ$. This result extends to all self-conformal measures satisfying the asymptotically weak separation condition. We point out that the interval $[τ'(+\infty), τ'(0+)]$ is not a singleton when $λ^{-1}$ is the la…
