We construct novel fermion-fermion dualities in $2+1$-dimensions using 3d bosonization dualities. This is achieved by relating two-node quiver theories using both the flavor-bounded and flavor-violated 3d bosonization dualities. Such quivers can be viewed as a generalization of the fermionic particle-vortex duality. A special case of these quivers exhibits a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry under interchange of the two nodes. Using orbifold techniques, we show that such dualities provide a novel way of deriving known 3d bosonization dualities with adjoint matter, thus unifying the non-Abelian bosonization dualities in an even larger duality web. We then use this construction to derive new dualities involving adjoint matter.
We use 3d bosonization dualities to derive new non-supersymmetric dualities between bosonic quiver theories in $2+1$ dimensions. It is shown that such dualities are a natural non-Abelian generalization of the bosonic particle-vortex duality. A special case of such dualities is applicable to Chern-Simons theories living on interfaces in $3+1$ dimensional $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory across which the theta angle jumps. We also analyze such interfaces in a holographic construction which provides further evidence for novel dualities between quiver gauge theories and gauge theories with adjoint scalar…
We give simple string theory embeddings of several recently introduced dualities between 2+1-dimensional Chern-Simons matter theories using probe brane holography. Our construction is reliable in the limit of a large number of colors $N$ with fixed Chern-Simons level $k$.
We conjecture a new sequence of dualities between Chern-Simons gauge theories simultaneously coupled to fundamental bosons and fermions. These dualities reduce to those proposed by Aharony when the number of bosons or fermions is zero. Our conjecture passes a number of consistency checks. These include the matching of global symmetries and consistency with level/rank duality in massive phases.
In this course, we will discuss dualities in 2+1 dimensions. We begin by briefly reviewing the physics of 1+1d T-duality and bosonization, and discuss flux attachment and the dual photon in 2+1d. Then, we introduce 2+1d particle-vortex duality, bosonization and their associated web of dualities. This includes discussing more elaborate Abelian dualities, including self-dual theories and quiver theories. Next, we move on to non-Abelian physics, discussing QCD in three dimensions and more. This done, we will discuss the relation of these dualities to SUSY dualities, lattice physics, and large N p…
We consider $3$-dimensional conformal field theories with $U(N)_κ$ Chern Simons gauge fields coupled to bosonic and fermionic matter fields transforming in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. In these CFTs, we compute in the t'Hooft large $N$ limit and to all orders in the t'Hooft coupling $λ= N/ κ$, the thermal two-point correlation functions of the spin $s=0$, $s=1$ and $s=2$ gauge invariant conformal primary operators. These are the lowest dimension single trace scalar, the $U(1)$ current and the stress tensor operators respectively. Our results furnish additional tests of th…
We study the bosonization of massless fermions in three-dimensional space-time. Using the path-integral approach as well as the operator formalism, we investigate new duality relations between fermionic and bosonic theories. In particular, we show that a theory of massless fermions is dual to three different, but equivalent bosonic theories which are quadratic in the bosonic fields: a non-local Maxwell- Chern-Simons-type theory, a non-local self-dual-type vector theory, and a local free massless bosonic theory. The equivalence is proven at the level of current correlation functions and current…
Bosonization dualities relate two different Chern-Simons-matter theories, with bosonic matter on one side replaced by fermionic matter on the other. We first describe a more general class of non-Abelian bosonization dualities. We then explore the non-relativistic physics of these theories in the quantum Hall regime. The bosonic theory lies in a condensed phase and admits vortices which are known to form a non-Abelian quantum Hall state. We ask how this same physics arises in the fermionic theory. We find that a condensed boson corresponds to a fully filled Landau level of fermions, while boson…
We provide a simple derivation of particle-vortex duality in d=2+1 dimensions. Our starting point is a relativistic form of flux attachment, designed to transmute the statistics of particles. From this seed, we derive a web of new dualities. These include particle-vortex duality for bosons as well as the recently discovered counterpart for fermions.
We start with the recently conjectured 3d bosonization dualities and gauge global symmetries to generate an infinite sequence of new dualities. These equate theories with non-Abelian product gauge groups and bifundamental matter. We uncover examples of Bose/Bose and Fermi/Fermi dualities, as well as a sequence of dualities between theories with scalar matter in two-index representations. Our conjectures are consistent with level/rank duality in massive phases.
Bosonization techniques are important nonperturbative tools in quantum field theory. In three dimensions they possess interesting connections to topologically ordered systems and ultimately have driven the observation of an impressive web of dualities. In this work, we use the quantum wires formalism to show how the fermion-boson mapping relating the low-energy regime of the massive Thirring model in three spacetime dimensions with the Maxwell-Chern-Simons model can be obtained from the exact bosonization in two dimensions.
We consider minimally supersymmetric QCD in 2+1 dimensions, with Chern-Simons and superpotential interactions. We propose an infrared $SU(N) \leftrightarrow U(k)$ duality involving gauge-singlet fields on one of the two sides. It shares qualitative features both with 3d bosonization and with 4d Seiberg duality. We provide a few consistency checks of the proposal, mapping the structure of vacua and performing perturbative computations in the $\varepsilon$-expansion.
We extend the recently proposed symmetry breaking scenario of QCD$_3$ to the so-called "master" $(2+1)$d bosonization duality, which has bosonic and fermionic matter on both ends. Using anomaly arguments, a phase diagram emerges with several novel regions. We then construct $2+1$ dimensional dualities for flavored quivers using node-by-node dualization. Such dualities are applicable to theories which live on domain walls in QCD$_4$-like theories with dynamical quarks. We also derive dualities for quivers based on orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups. Lastly, we support the conjectured dualit…
We establish the action of the three-dimensional non-Abelian bosonization dualities in the presence of a boundary, which supports a non-anomalous two-dimensional theory. In particular, we generalize a prescriptive method for assigning duality consistent boundary conditions used originally for Abelian dualities to dual non-Abelian Chern-Simons-matter theories with $SU$ and $U$ gauge groups and fundamental matter sectors. The cases of single species matter sectors and those with both scalars and fermions in the dual theories are considered. Generalization of our methods to $SO$ and $USp$ Chern-S…
In this paper we present a schema for describing dualities between physical theories (Sections 2 and 3), and illustrate it in detail with the example of bosonization: a boson-fermion duality in two-dimensional quantum field theory (Sections 4 and 5). The schema develops proposals in De Haro (2016, 2016a): these proposals include construals of notions related to duality, like representation, model, symmetry and interpretation. The aim of the schema is to give a more precise criterion for duality than has so far been considered. The bosonization example, or boson-fermion duality, has the feature…
We study bosonization in 2+1 dimensions using mirror symmetry, a duality that relates pairs of supersymmetric theories. Upon breaking supersymmetry in a controlled way, we dynamically obtain the bosonization duality that equates the theory of a free Dirac fermion to QED3 with a single scalar boson. This duality may be used to demonstrate the bosonization duality relating an $O(2)$-symmetric Wilson-Fisher fixed point to QED3 with a single Dirac fermion, Peskin-Dasgupta-Halperin duality, and the recently conjectured duality relating the theory of a free Dirac fermion to fermionic QED3 with a sin…
We explore the possibility of extending the familiar bosonization of two dimensions to $(0+1)$- dimensional systems with a large number of degrees of freedom. As an application of this technique, we consider a class of SYK-type models, and argue that the corresponding action on the gravity dual of the SYK model is given by an STS sequence of dualities.
In the lectures given at '96 Kashikojima Summer Institute, Amagi-Highland Seminars, and Yukawa Institute Workshop, the old-fashioned dualities and the theory of extended objects are reviewed, starting from 't Hooft-Mandelstam duality and following the author's old works. Application of the old-fashioned dualities to new issues are also given on the D-branes, on the phase transition of B-F theory to Einstein gravity and on the swimming of microorganisms.
We establish the action of three-dimensional bosonization and particle-vortex duality in the presence of a boundary, which supports a non-anomalous two-dimensional theory. We confirm our prescription using a microscopic realization of the duality in terms of a Euclidean lattice.
In this work we provide a bosonized version of the Thirring model in 2+1 dimensions in the case of single fermion species, where we do not have the benefit of large N expansion. In this situation there are very few analytical methods to extract nonperturbative information. Meanwhile, nontrivial behavior is expected to take place precisely in this regime. To establish the bosonization of the Thirring model, we consider a deformation of a basic fermion-boson duality relation in 2+1 dimensions. The bosonized model interpolates between the ultraviolet and infrared regimes, passing several consiste…
We discuss a new class of strong homotopy algebras constructed via inner deformations. Such deformations have a number of remarkable properties. In the simplest case, every one-parameter family of associative algebras leads to an $L_\infty$-algebra that can be used to construct a classical integrable model. Another application of this class of $L_\infty$-algebras is related with the three-dimensional bosonization duality in Chern--Simons vector models, where it implements the idea of the slightly-broken higher spin symmetry. One large class of associative algebras originates from Deformation Q…
We generalize our previous lattice construction of the abelian bosonization duality in $2+1$ dimensions to the entire web of dualities as well as the $N_f=2$ self-duality, via the lattice implementation of a set of modular transformations in the theory space. The microscopic construction provides explicit operator mappings, and allows the manifestation of some hidden symmetries. It also exposes certain caveats and implicit assumptions beneath the usual application of the modular transformations to generate the web of dualities. Finally, we make brief comments on the non-relativistic limit of t…
It is an important open problem to understand the landscape of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall phases which can be obtained starting from physically motivated theories of Abelian composite particles. We show that progress on this problem can be made using recently proposed non-Abelian bosonization dualities in 2+1 dimensions, which morally relate $U(N)_k$ and $SU(k)_{-N}$ Chern-Simons-matter theories. The advantage of these dualities is that regions of the phase diagram which may be obscure on one side of the duality can be accessed by condensing local operators on the other side. Starting…
We generalize the Giveon-Kutasov duality by adding possible Chern-Simons interactions for the $U(N)$ gauge group. Some of the generalized dualities are known in the literature and many others are new to the best of our knowledge. The dualities are connected to the non-supersymmetric bosonization duality via mass deformations. For $N=1$, there are an infinite number of magnetic-dual theories.
We examine magnetic and electric near horizon regions of maximally supersymmetric D-brane and NS5-brane bound states and find transformations between near horizon regions with worldvolume dual magnetic and electric fluxes. These point to dual formulations of NCYM, NCOS and OD$p$ theories in the limit of weak coupling and large spatial or temporal non-commutativity length scale in terms of weakly coupled theories with fixed worldvolume dual non-commutativity based on open D-branes. We also examine the strong coupling behavior of the open D-brane theories and propose a unified web of dualities i…
We describe a web of well-known dualities connecting quantum field theories in $d=1+1$ dimensions. The web is constructed by gauging ${\bf Z}_2$ global symmetries and includes a number of perennial favourites such as the Jordan-Wigner transformation, Kramers-Wannier duality, bosonization of a Dirac fermion, and T-duality. There are also less-loved examples, such as non-modular invariant $c=1$ CFTs that depend on a background spin structure.
We revisit the question whether the worldsheet theory of a string admits a global O(d,d) symmetry. We consider the truncation of the target space theory in which fields are independent of d coordinates, which is O(d,d,R) invariant. The worldsheet theory is not O(d,d,R) invariant, unless it is truncated by setting winding and center-of-mass momenta to zero. We prove consistency of this truncation and give a manifestly O(d,d,R) invariant action, generalizing a formulation due to Tseytlin by including all external and internal target space fields. It is shown that, due to chiral bosons, this symm…
We use the technique of deconstruction to lift dualities from 2+1 to 3+1 dimensions. In this work we demonstrate the basic idea by deriving S-duality of maximally supersymmetric electromagnetism in 3+1 dimensions from mirror symmetry in 2+1. We also study the deconstruction of a non-supersymmetric duality in 3+1 dimensions using Abelian bosonization in 2+1 dimensions.
Over the years, many theoretical frameworks have been developed to understand the remarkable physics of the quantum Hall system. In this work we discuss the interplay among quantum wires, Chern-Simons theory, bosonization, and particle-vortex duality, which enable a unified approach for the Laughlin states of the fractional quantum Hall system. Starting from the so-called quantum wires system, which is a semi-microscopic description in terms of 1+1 dimensional theories, we discuss the emergence of 2+1 dimensional low-energy effective field theories by using different maps connecting the micros…
Dualities provide deep insight into physics by relating two seemingly distinct theories. Here we consider a duality between lattice fermions and bosons in (2+1) spacetime dimensions, relating free massive Dirac fermions to Abelian Chern-Simons Higgs (ACSH) bosons. To establish the duality we represent the exact partition function of the lattice fermions in terms of the writhe of fermionic worldlines. On the bosonic side the partition function is expressed in the writhe of the vortex loops of the particle-vortex dual of the ACSH Lagrangian. In the continuum and scaling limit we show these to be…
Contrary to the common wisdom, local bosonizations of fermionic systems exist in higher dimensions. Interestingly, resulting bosonic variables must satisfy local constraints of a gauge type. They effectively replace long distance exchange interactions. In this work we study in detail the properties of such a system which was proposed a long time ago. In particular, dependence of the constraints on lattice geometry and fermion multiplicity is further elaborated and is now classified for all two dimensional, rectangular lattices with arbitrary sizes. For few small systems the constraints are sol…
Using an explicit path integral approach we derive non-abelian bosonization and duality of 3D systems in the large $N$ limit. We first consider a fermionic $U(N)$ vector model coupled to level $k$ Chern-Simons theory, following standard techniques we gauge the original global symmetry and impose the corresponding field strength $F_{μν}$ to vanish introducing a Lagrange multiplier $Λ$. Exchanging the order of integrations we obtain the bosonized theory with $Λ$ as the propagating field using the large $N$ rather than the previously used large mass limit. Next we follow the same procedure to dua…
We study the dynamics of chiral SU(N) gauge theories. These contain Weyl fermions in the symmetric or anti-symmetric representation of the gauge group, together with further fermions in the fundamental and anti-fundamental. We revisit an old proposal of Bars and Yankielowicz who match the 't Hooft anomalies of this theory to free fermions. We show that there are novel and, in some cases, quite powerful constraints on the dynamics in the large N limit. In addition, we study these SU(N) theories with an extra Weyl fermion transforming in the adjoint representation. Here we show that all 21 't Ho…
We construct a web of non-supersymmetric dualities in four spacetime dimensions for theories with theta and Maxwell terms. Our construction mirrors the recipe used in (2+1)-dimensions to demonstrate a similar duality for theories with Chern-Simons terms. As in the 3-dimensional case, the web consists of boson-boson, fermion-fermion and boson-fermion dualities, any one of which can be taken as a seed for the remaining two. To be concrete, we begin by constructing the basic bosonization duality which we then use to generate the web, using an analog of the 3-dimensional massive construction given…
Old fashioned duality used to derive the closed string field theory for magnetic vortex from the gauge theory with Higgs scalar, is applied to the string theories. The bosonic sring theory coupled to the Kalb-Ramond 2-form field is dually transformed to the 6-brane theory coupled to the 7-form field. The old fashioned dual transformation is also examined for the Type IIA and IIB superstrings. For this study, the string field theoretical treatment of the bosonic and fermionic strings is developped based on the reparametrization invariant formulation of strings by Marshall and Ramond. In order f…
The soldering mechanism is a new technique to work with distinct manifestations of dualities that incorporates interference effects, leading to new physical results that includes quantum contributions. This approach was used to investigate the cases of electromagnetic dualities, and $D\geq 2$ bosonization. In the former context this technique is applied for the quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator, the scalar field theory in two dimensions and the Maxwell theory in four dimensions. The soldered actions in any dimension leads to a master action which is duality invariant under a much bigger s…
