Dualities provide deep insight into physics by relating two seemingly distinct theories. Here we consider a duality between lattice fermions and bosons in (2+1) spacetime dimensions, relating free massive Dirac fermions to Abelian Chern-Simons Higgs (ACSH) bosons. To establish the duality we represent the exact partition function of the lattice fermions in terms of the writhe of fermionic worldlines. On the bosonic side the partition function is expressed in the writhe of the vortex loops of the particle-vortex dual of the ACSH Lagrangian. In the continuum and scaling limit we show these to be identical. This result can be understood from the closed fermionic worldlines being direct mappings of the ACSH vortex loops, with the writhe keeping track of particle statistics.
We present exact large N calculus of four point function in general Chern-Simons bosonic and fermionic vector models. Applying the LSZ formula to the four point function we determine two body scattering amplitudes in these theories taking a special care for a non-analytic term to achieve unitarity in the singlet channel. We show that the S-matrix enjoys the bosonization duality, unusual crossing relation and non-relativistic reduction to Aharonov-Bohm scattering. We also argue that the S-matrix develops a pole in a certain range of coupling constants, which disappears in the range where the th…
Bosonization techniques are important nonperturbative tools in quantum field theory. In three dimensions they possess interesting connections to topologically ordered systems and ultimately have driven the observation of an impressive web of dualities. In this work, we use the quantum wires formalism to show how the fermion-boson mapping relating the low-energy regime of the massive Thirring model in three spacetime dimensions with the Maxwell-Chern-Simons model can be obtained from the exact bosonization in two dimensions.
We extend the bosonization of $2+1$ - dimensional QED with one fermionic flavor performed previously to the case of QED with an induced Chern - Simons term. The coefficient of this term is quantized: $e^2n/8π$, $n\in {\bf Z}$. The fermion operators are constructed in terms of the bosonic fields $A_i$ and $E_i$. The construction is similar to that in the $n=0$ case. The resulting bosonic theory is Lorentz invariant in the continuum limit and has Maxwell's equations as its equations of motion. The algebra of bilinears exhibits nontrivial operatorial mixing with lower dimensional operators, which…
We study four-point functions in Chern-Simons vector models in the large $N$ limit. We compute the four-point function of the scalar primary to all orders in the `t Hooft coupling $λ=N/k$ in $U(N)_k$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to a fundamental fermion, in both the critical and non-critical theory, for a particular case of the external momenta. These theories cover the entire 3-parameter "quasi-boson" and 2-parameter "quasi-fermion" families of 3-dimensional quantum field theories with a slightly-broken higher spin symmetry. Our results are consistent with the celebrated bosonization duality, …
We consider $3$-dimensional conformal field theories with $U(N)_κ$ Chern Simons gauge fields coupled to bosonic and fermionic matter fields transforming in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. In these CFTs, we compute in the t'Hooft large $N$ limit and to all orders in the t'Hooft coupling $λ= N/ κ$, the thermal two-point correlation functions of the spin $s=0$, $s=1$ and $s=2$ gauge invariant conformal primary operators. These are the lowest dimension single trace scalar, the $U(1)$ current and the stress tensor operators respectively. Our results furnish additional tests of th…
We consider Chern-Simons theory coupled to massive fundamental matter in three spacetime dimensions at finite temperature, in the large $N$ limit. We compute several thermal correlators in this theory for both fermionic and bosonic matter separately. The results are computed in the large $N$ 't Hooft limit but for arbitrary values of the 't Hooft coupling. Furthermore, we generalize the computations of the four-point function of fundamental scalars in the bosonic theory to finite temperature. As a consistency check, we see that the results obtained here agree with the existing previous results…
We perform the complete bosonization of 2+1 dimensional QED with one fermionic flavor in the Hamiltonian formalism. The fermion operators are explicitly constructed in terms of the vector potential and the electric field. We carefully specify the regularization procedure involved in the definition of these operators, and calculate the fermionic bilinears and the energy - momentum tensor. The algebra of bilinears exhibits the Schwinger terms which also appear in perturbation theory. The bosonic Hamiltonian density is a local polynomial function of $A_i$ and $E_i$, and we check explicitly the Lo…
We give simple string theory embeddings of several recently introduced dualities between 2+1-dimensional Chern-Simons matter theories using probe brane holography. Our construction is reliable in the limit of a large number of colors $N$ with fixed Chern-Simons level $k$.
We discuss bosonization in three dimensions of an $SU(N)$ massive Thirring model in the low-energy regime. We find that the bosonized theory is related (but not equal) to $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons gauge theory. For free massive fermions bosonization leads, at low energies, to the pure $SU(N)$ (level $k=1$) Chern-Simons theory.
In this paper we study in detail the equivalence of the recently introduced Born-Infeld self dual model to the Abelian Born-Infeld-Chern-Simons model in 2+1 dimensions. We first apply the improved Batalin, Fradkin and Tyutin scheme, to embed the Born-Infeld Self dual model to a gauge system and show that the embedded model is equivalent to Abelian Born-Infeld-Chern-Simons theory. Next, using Buscher's duality procedure, we demonstrate this equivalence in a covariant Lagrangian formulation and also derive the mapping between the n-point correlators of the (dual) field strength in Born-Infeld Ch…
We study the bosonization of massless fermions in three-dimensional space-time. Using the path-integral approach as well as the operator formalism, we investigate new duality relations between fermionic and bosonic theories. In particular, we show that a theory of massless fermions is dual to three different, but equivalent bosonic theories which are quadratic in the bosonic fields: a non-local Maxwell- Chern-Simons-type theory, a non-local self-dual-type vector theory, and a local free massless bosonic theory. The equivalence is proven at the level of current correlation functions and current…
We perform a dimensional reduction of the $U(1)\times SU(2)$ Chern--Simons bosonization and apply it to the $t-J$ model, relevant for high $T_c$ superconductors. This procedure yields a decomposition of the electron field into a product of two ``semionic" fields, i.e. fields obeying abelian braid statistics with statistics parameter $θ={1\over 4}$, one carrying the charge and the other the spin degrees of freedom. A mean field theory is then shown to reproduce correctly the large distance behaviour of the correlation functions of the 1D $t-J$ model at $t>>J$. This result shows that to capture …
We consider the conformal field theory of N complex massless scalars in 2+1 dimensions, coupled to a U(N) Chern-Simons theory at level k. This theory has a 't Hooft large N limit, keeping fixed λ= N/k. We compute some correlation functions in this theory exactly as a function of λ, in the large N (planar) limit. We show that the results match with the general predictions of Maldacena and Zhiboedov for the correlators of theories that have high-spin symmetries in the large N limit. It has been suggested in the past that this theory is dual (in the large N limit) to the Legendre transform of the…
We use 3d bosonization dualities to derive new non-supersymmetric dualities between bosonic quiver theories in $2+1$ dimensions. It is shown that such dualities are a natural non-Abelian generalization of the bosonic particle-vortex duality. A special case of such dualities is applicable to Chern-Simons theories living on interfaces in $3+1$ dimensional $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory across which the theta angle jumps. We also analyze such interfaces in a holographic construction which provides further evidence for novel dualities between quiver gauge theories and gauge theories with adjoint scalar…
We discuss recent results on bosonization in $d \geq 2$ space-time dimensions by giving a very simple derivation for the bosonic representation of the original free fermionic model both in the abelian and non-abelian cases. We carefully analyse the issue of symmetries in the resulting bosonic model as well as the recipes for bosonization of fermion currents
It has previously been conjectured that the theory of free fundamental scalars minimally coupled to a Chern Simons gauge field is dual to the theory of critical fundamental fermions minimally coupled to a level rank dual Chern Simons gauge field. In this paper we study RG flows away from these two fixed points by turning on relevant operators. In the t' Hooft large N limit we compute the thermal partition along each of these flows and find a map of parameters under which the two partition functions agree exactly with each other all the way from the UV to the IR. We conjecture that the bosonic …
The (1+1)-dimensional bosonization relations for fermionic mass terms are derived by choosing a specific gauge in an enlarged gauge-invariant theory containing both fermionic and bosonic fields. The fermionic part of the generating functional subject to the gauge constraint can be cast into the form of a strongly coupled Schwinger model, which can be solved exactly. The resulting bosonic theory coupled to the scalar sources then exhibits directly the bosonic counterparts of the fermionic scalar and pseudoscalar mass densities.
We present an extension of ``smooth bosonization'' to the non-Abelian case. We construct an enlarged theory containing both bosonic and fermionic fields which exhibits a local chiral gauge symmetry. A gauge fixing function depending on one real parameter allows us to interpolate smoothly between a purely fermionic and a purely bosonic representation. The procedure is, in the special case of bosonization, complementary to the approach based on duality.
We discuss several aspects of a generalization of the Chern-Simons action containing the pseudo-differential operator$\sqrt{-\Box}$, which we shall call pseudo Chern-Simons (PCS). Firstly, we derive the PCS from the bosonization of free massive Dirac particles in (2+1)D in the limit when $m^2\ll p^2$, where $m$ is the fermion mass and $p$ is its momentum. In this regime, the whole bosonized action also has a modified Maxwell term, involving the same pseudo-differential operator. Furthermore, the large-mass $m^2\gg p^2$ regime is also considered. We also investigate the main effects of the PCS …
A procedure of bosonization of Fermions in an arbitrary dimension is suggested. It is shown that a quadratic expression in the fermionic fields after rescaling time $t\to t/λ^2$ and performing the limit $λ\to0$ (stochastic limit), gives rise to a bosonic operator satisfying the boson canonical commutation relations. This stochastic bosonization of Fermions is considered first for free fields and then for a model with three--linear couplings. The limiting dynamics of the bosonic theory turns out to be described by means of a quantum stochastic differential equations.
While the phase structure of the $U(1)\times U(1)$-symmetric Higgs theory is still under debate, a version of this theory with an additional Chern-Simons term was recently shown to undergo a second-order phase transition [V. Shyta, J. van den Brink, and F. S. Nogueira, Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 045701 (2021)]. This theory is dual to a topological field theory of massless fermions featuring two gauge fields. Here we elaborate on several aspects of this duality, focusing on the critical current correlators and on the nature of the critical point as reflected by the bosonization duality. The current …
We study Chern-Simons theories at large $N$ with either bosonic or fermionic matter in the fundamental representation. The most fundamental operators in these theories are mesonic line operators, the simplest example being Wilson lines ending on fundamentals. We classify the conformal line operators along an arbitrary smooth path as well as the spectrum of conformal dimensions and transverse spins of their boundary operators at finite 't Hooft coupling. These line operators are shown to satisfy first-order chiral evolution equations, in which a smooth variation of the path is given by a factor…
Two-dimensional quantum systems with competing orders can feature a deconfined quantum critical point, yielding a continuous phase transition that is incompatible with the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson scenario, predicting instead a first-order phase transition. This is caused by the LGW order parameter breaking up into new elementary excitations at the critical point. Canonical candidates for deconfined quantum criticality are quantum antiferromagnets with competing magnetic orders, captured by the easy-plane CP$^1$ model. A delicate issue however is that numerics indicates the easy-plane CP$^1$ ant…
We establish the action of the three-dimensional non-Abelian bosonization dualities in the presence of a boundary, which supports a non-anomalous two-dimensional theory. In particular, we generalize a prescriptive method for assigning duality consistent boundary conditions used originally for Abelian dualities to dual non-Abelian Chern-Simons-matter theories with $SU$ and $U$ gauge groups and fundamental matter sectors. The cases of single species matter sectors and those with both scalars and fermions in the dual theories are considered. Generalization of our methods to $SO$ and $USp$ Chern-S…
We explore Chern-Simons theories coupled to fundamental ghost-like matter in the large $N$ limit at 't Hooft coupling $λ$. These theories have been conjectured to be holographically dual to parity-violating, asymptotically dS$_4$ universes with a tower of light higher-spin fields. On $\mathbb{R}^3$, to all orders in large-$N$ perturbation theory, we show that Chern-Simons-ghost theories are related to ordinary Chern-Simons-matter theories by mapping $N \rightarrow - N$ and keeping $λ$ fixed. Consequently, the bosonization duality of ordinary Chern-Simons-matter theories extends to a bosonizati…
We compute the thermal free energy for all renormalizable Chern Simon theories coupled to a single fundamental bosonic and fermionic field in the 't Hooft large N limit. We use our results to conjecture a strong weak coupling duality invariance for this class of theories. Our conjectured duality reduces to Giveon Kutasov duality when restricted to {\cal N}=2 supersymmetric theories and to an earlier conjectured bosonization duality in an appropriate decoupling limit. Consequently the bosonization duality may be regarded as a deformation of Giveon Kutasov duality, suggesting that it is true eve…
Three dimensional bosonization is a conjectured duality between non-supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories coupled to matter fields in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. There is a well-established supersymmetric version of this duality, which involves Chern-Simons theories with ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetry coupled to fundamental chiral multiplets. Assuming that the supersymmetric duality is valid, we prove that non-supersymmetric bosonization holds for all planar correlators of single-trace operators. The main tool we employ is a double-trace flow from the supersymmetric theory …
I investigate bosonization in four dimensions, using the smooth bosonization scheme. I argue that generalized chiral ``phases'' of the fermion field corresponding to chiral phase rotations and ``chiral Poincare transformations'' are the appropriate degrees of freedom for bosonization. Smooth bosonization is then applied to an Abelian fermion coupled to an external vector. The result is an exact rewriting of the theory, including the fermion, the bosonic fields, and ghosts. Exact bosonization is therefore not achieved since the fermion and the ghosts are not completely eliminated. The action fo…
Bosonization dualities relate two different Chern-Simons-matter theories, with bosonic matter on one side replaced by fermionic matter on the other. We first describe a more general class of non-Abelian bosonization dualities. We then explore the non-relativistic physics of these theories in the quantum Hall regime. The bosonic theory lies in a condensed phase and admits vortices which are known to form a non-Abelian quantum Hall state. We ask how this same physics arises in the fermionic theory. We find that a condensed boson corresponds to a fully filled Landau level of fermions, while boson…
I discuss in this talk a bosonization approach recently developed. It leads to the (exact) bosonization rule for fermion currents in d > 2 dimensions and also provides a systematic way of constructing the bosonic action in different regimes.
In this Note, we study bosonization of the noncommutative massive Thirring model in 2+1- dimensions. We show that, contrary to the duality between massive Thirring model and Maxwell-Chern-Simons model in ordinary spacetime, in the low energy (or large fermion mass) limit, their noncommutative versions are not equivalent, in the same approximation.
We discuss Abelian and non-Abelian three dimensional bosonization within the path-integral framework. We present a systematic approach leading to the construction of the bosonic action which, together with the bosonization recipe for fermion currents, describes the original fermion system in terms of vector bosons.
We develop the construction of fermionic fields in terms of bosonic ones to describe free and interaction models in the circle, using thermofielddynamics. The description in the case of finite temperature is developed for both normal modes and zero modes. The treatment extends the thermofield-bosonization for periodic space.
The minimal bosonization of supersymmetry in terms of one bosonic degree of freedom is considered. A nontrivial relationship of the construction to the Witten supersymmetric quantum mechanics is illustrated with the help of the simplest $N=2$ SUSY system realized on the basis of the ordinary (undeformed) bosonic oscillator. It is shown that the generalization of such a construction to the case of Vasiliev deformed bosonic oscillator gives a supersymmetric extension of the 2-body Calogero model in the phase of exact or spontaneously broken $N=2$ SUSY. The construction admits an extension to the…
Recently, a duality web for three dimensional theories with Chern-Simons terms was proposed. This can be derived from a single bosonization type duality, for which various supporting arguments (but not a proof) were given. Here we explicitly derive this bosonization, in the Abelian case and for a particular regime of parameters. To do this, we use the particle-vortex duality in combination with a Buscher-like duality (both considered in the regime of low energies). As a corollary, Son's conjectured duality is derived in a somewhat singular limit of vanishing mass.
We perform the complete bosonization of 2+1 dimensional QED with one fermionic flavor in the Hamiltonian formalism. The Fermi operators are explicitly constructed in terms of the vector potential and the electric field. We carefully specify the regularization procedure involved in the definition of these operators, and calculate the fermionic bilinears and the energy - momentum tensor. The algebra of bilinears exhibits the Schwinger terms which also appear in perturbation theory. The bosonic Hamiltonian is a local, polynomial functional of $A_i$ and $E_i$, and we check explicitly the Lorentz i…
We discuss various bosonization schemes from a path integral perspective. Our analysis shows that the existence of different bosonization schemes, such as abelian bosonization of non-abelian models and non-abelian bosonization of fermions with colour and flavour indices, can be understood as different ways of factoring out a dynamically trivial coset which contains the fermions. From this perspective follows the importance of the coset model in ensuring the correct superselection rules on the bosonic level.
We consider the fermion-boson mapping in three dimensional space-time, in the Abelian case, from the current algebra point of view. We show that in a path-integral framework one can derive a general bosonization recipe leading, in the bosonic language, to the correct equal-time current commutators of the original free fermionic theory.
Bosonization of the gauged, massive Thirring model in 2+1-dimensions produces a Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge theory, coupled to a dynamical, massive vector field. Exploiting the Master Lagrangian formalism, two dual theories are constructed, one of them being a gauge theory. The full two-point functions of both the interacting fields are computed in the path integral quantization scheme. Furthermore, some new dual models, derived from the original master lagrangian and valid for different regimes of coupling parameters, are constructed and analysed in details.
We present field theoretical descriptions of massless (2+1) dimensional nonrelativistic fermions in an external magnetic field, in terms of a fermionic and bosonic second quantized language. An infinite dimensional algebra, $W_{\infty}$, appears as the algebra of unitary transformations which preserve the lowest Landau level condition and the particle number. In the droplet approximation it reduces to the algebra of area-preserving diffeomorphisms, which is responsible for the existence of a universal chiral boson Lagrangian independent of the electrostatic potential. We argue that the bosonic…
We present a new representation of spin operators in terms of bosonic creation-annihilation operators. This representation allows us to formulate a new field-theoretical description of spin systems which is free of any constraints. The corresponding functional integral representations for thermodynamic quantities are given and the application to investigations of Long Range Order in the system is discussed.
We conjecture a new sequence of dualities between Chern-Simons gauge theories simultaneously coupled to fundamental bosons and fermions. These dualities reduce to those proposed by Aharony when the number of bosons or fermions is zero. Our conjecture passes a number of consistency checks. These include the matching of global symmetries and consistency with level/rank duality in massive phases.
A four dimensional fermion determinant is presented as a path integral of the exponent of a local five dimensional action describing constrained bosonic system. The construction is carried out both in the continuum theory and in the lattice model.
We discuss non-Abelian bosonization of two and three dimensional fermions using a path-integral framework in which the bosonic action follows from the evaluation of the fermion determinant for the Dirac operator in the presence of a vector field. This naturally leads to the Wess-Zumino-Witten action for massless two-dimensional fermions and to a Chern-Simons action for very massive three dimensional fermions. One advantage of our approach is that it allows to derive the exact bosonization recipe for fermion currents in a systematic way.
A bosonic string coupled to the generalized Chern-Simons theory in 3+1D acquires a magnetic field along itself, when it is closed, and a topological charge at its extremity, when it is open. We construct the creation operators for the full quantum field states associated to these strings and determine the dual algebra satisfied by them. We show that the creation operator fo the composite state of a quantum closed bosonic string, bearing a magnetic flux, and a topologically charged open bosonic string, possesses generalized statistics. The relation of our results with previous approaches to the…
We derive the exact form of the bosonized Hamiltonian for a many-body fermion system in one spatial dimension with arbitrary dispersion relations, using the droplet bosonization method. For a single-particle Hamiltonian polynomial in the momentum, the bosonized Hamiltonian is a polynomial of one degree higher in the bosonic "boundary" field and includes subleading lower-order and derivative terms. This generalizes the known results for massless relativistic and nonrelativistic fermions (quadratic and cubic bosonic Hamiltonians, respectively). We also consider two-body interactions and demonstr…
Building on the recent progress in solving Chern-Simons-matter theories in the planar limit, we compute the scaling dimensions of a large class of disorder ("monopole") operators in $U(N)_k$ Chern-Simons-fermion theories at all 't Hooft couplings $λ= N/k$. We find that the lowest-dimension operator of this sort has dimension $\frac23 k^{3/2}$. We comment on the implications of these results to analyzing maps of fermionic disorder operators under 3D bosonization.
We consider a recently proposed approach to bosonization in which the original fermionic partition function is expressed as a product of a $G/G$-coset model and a bosonic piece that contains the dynamics. In particular we show how the method works when topological backgrounds are taken into account. We also discuss the application of this technique to the case of massive fermions.
Using the recently discovered connection between bosonization and duality transformations (hep-th/9401105 and hep-th/9403173), we give an explicit path-integral representation for the bosonization of a massive fermion coupled to a U(1) gauge potential (such as electromagnetism) in d space (D=d+1 spacetime) dimensions. The bosonic theory is described by a rank d-1 antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond-type gauge potential. We construct the bosonized lagrangian explicitly in the limit of large fermion mass. We find that the resulting action is local for d=2 (and given by a Chern-Simons action), but nonlocal…
We discuss the bosonization of nonrelativistic fermions interacting with non-Abelian gauge fields in the lowest Landau level in the framework of higher dimensional quantum Hall effect. The bosonic action is a one-dimensional matrix action, which can also be written as a noncommutative field theory, invariant under $W_N$ transformations. The requirement that the usual gauge transformation should be realized as a $W_N$ transformation provides an analog of a Seiberg-Witten map, which allows us to express the action purely in terms of bosonic fields. The semiclassical limit of this, describing the…
We consider the planar limit of Chern-Simons theories coupled to a scalar $ϕ$ in the fundamental representation of a $U(N)_k$ gauge group, at both the regular and Wilson-Fisher conformal points. These theories have one single-trace scalar operator $J_0=ϕ^{\dagger}ϕ$. We calculate its connected planar $n$-point functions, when all the external momenta are collinear. More specifically, we derive an algebraic recurrence relation that expresses each such $n$-point function in terms of lower-point ones. As an application, we study the four-point function, which was recently shown to be completely f…
Here we address the problem of bosonizing massive fermions without making expansions in the fermion masses in both massive $QED_2$ and $QED_3$ with $ N $ fermion flavors including also a Thirring coupling. We start from two point correlators involving the U(1) fermionic current and the gauge field. From the tensor structure of those correlators we prove that the U(1) current must be identically conserved (topological) in the corresponding bosonized theory both in D=2 and D=3 dimensions. We find an effective generating functional in terms of bosonic fields which reproduces those two point corre…
Boundary operators and boundary states in $SU(2)$-invariant Thirring model are considered from the point of view of bosonization and oscillator realizations of bulk and boundary Zamolodchikov-Faddeev algebras.
We present a path-integral bosonization approach for systems out of equilibrium based on a duality transformation of the original Dirac fermion theory combined with the Schwinger-Keldysh time closed contour technique, to handle the non-equilibrium situation. The duality approach to bosonization that we present is valid for $D \geq 2$ space-time dimensions leading for $D=2$ to exact results. In this last case we present the bosonization rules for fermion currents, calculate current-current correlation functions and establish the connection between the fermionic and bosonic distribution function…
We show that bosonization in two dimensions can be derived as a special case of the duality transformations that have recently been used to good effect in string theory. This allows the construction of the bosonic counterpart of any fermionic theory simply by `following your nose' using the standard duality transformation rules. We work through the bosonization of the Dirac fermion, the massive and massless Thirring models, and a fermion on a cylindrical spacetime as illustrative examples.
We describe a 2d analog of the Jordan-Wigner transformation which maps an arbitrary fermionic system on a 2d lattice to a lattice gauge theory while preserving the locality of the Hamiltonian. When the space is simply-connected, this bosonization map is an equivalence. We describe several examples of 2d bosonization, including free fermions on square and honeycomb lattices and the Hubbard model. We describe Euclidean actions for the corresponding lattice gauge theories and find that they contains Chern-Simons-like terms. Finally, we write down a fermionic dual of the gauged Ising model (the Fr…
