To model the interior of a black hole, a study is made of a spin system with long-range random four-spin couplings that exhibits quantum chaos. The black hole limit corresponds to a system where the microstates are approximately degenerate and equally likely, corresponding to the high temperature limit of the spin system. At the leading level of approximation, reconstruction of bulk physics implies that local probes of the black hole should exhibit free propagation and unitary local evolution. We test the conjecture that a particular mean field Hamiltonian provides such a local bulk Hamiltonian by numerically solving the exact Schrodinger equation and comparing the time evolution to the approximate mean field time values. We find excellent agreement between the two time evolutions for timescales smaller than the scrambling time. In earlier work, it was shown bulk evolution along comparable timeslices is spoiled by the presence of the curvature singularity, thus the matching found in the present work provides evidence of the success of this approach to interior holography. The numerical solutions also provide a useful testing ground for various measures of quantum chaos and global scrambling. A number of different observables, such as entanglement entropy, out-of-time-order correlators, and trace distance are used to study these effects. This leads to a suitable definition of scrambling time, and evidence is presented showing a logarithmic variation with the system size.
Using the standard Hamiltonian approach followed by ADM formalism to the geometry of a Schwarzschild black hole, we show that the interior spacetime of Schwarzschild black hole behaves like a relativistic free particle with Planck mass $M_{p}$. We further present the (anti-)BRST quantization of the relativistic free particle representing the interior of Schwarzschild black hole. With help of the (anti-)BRST formalism, we determine the physical states of the system in general Hilbert space. This is a novel observation in the context of gauge theoretic approach to gravity.
Combining a variety of results in string theory and general relativity, a picture of the black hole interior is developed wherein spacetime caps off at an inner horizon, and the inter-horizon region is occupied by a Hagedorn gas of a very low tension state of fractionated branes. This picture leads to natural resolutions of a variety of puzzles concerning quantum black holes. Gravity Research Foundation 2015 Fourth Prize Award for Essays on Gravitation.
We propose a CFT definition of local observables in both the exterior and interior of bulk black holes, whenever such an interior exists. We achieve this by introducing a small microcanonical black hole as a "probe" and using its modular flow to propagate operators from the asymptotic boundary to the interior of other black holes along its worldline, elaborating on the ideas of [2009.04476]. The key conceptual advance is a CFT criterion for selecting states whose modular flow acts as geometric proper time translation in the bulk, which we dub "local equilibrium" states. Our interior reconstruc…
It has previously been proposed that the black hole interior of typical state large black holes in AdS can be described using state-dependent operators. We investigate the possibility that the interior can be described by explicit time dependence, which reduces the state-dependence of the interior operators to a single parameter. We also propose to use the natural cone, obtained from Tomita-Takesaki theory, as a candidate construction for the interior operators.
We compute the time-dependent entanglement entropy of a CFT which starts in relatively simple initial states. The initial states are the thermofield double for thermal states, dual to eternal black holes, and a particular pure state, dual to a black hole formed by gravitational collapse. The entanglement entropy grows linearly in time. This linear growth is directly related to the growth of the black hole interior measured along "nice" spatial slices. These nice slices probe the spacelike direction in the interior, at a fixed special value of the interior time. In the case of a two-dimensional…
We study the minimal surfaces between two of the multiple boundaries of 3d maximally extended rotating eternal black hole. Via AdS/CFT, this corresponds to investigating the behavior of entanglements of the boundary CFT with multiple sectors. Non-trivial time evolutions of such entanglements detect the geometry inside the horizon, and behave differently depending on the choice of the two boundaries.
We provide an explicit construction of classical strings that have endpoints on the horizons of the 2D Lorentzian black hole. We argue that this is a dual description of geodesics that are localized around the horizon which are the Lorentzian counterparts of the winding strings of the Euclidean black hole (the cigar geometry). Identifying these with the states of the black hole, we can expect that issues of black hole information loss can be posed sharply in terms of a fully quantizable string theory.
We analyze the Euclidean geometry near non-extremal NS5-branes in string theory, including regions beyond the horizon and beyond the singularity of the black brane. The various regions have an exact description in string theory, in terms of cigar, trumpet and negative level minimal model conformal field theories. We study the worldsheet elliptic genera of these three superconformal theories, and show that their sum vanishes. We speculate on the significance of this curious sum rule for black hole physics.
We present a further argument that typical black holes with field theory duals have firewalls at the horizon. This argument makes no reference to entanglement between the black hole and any distant system, and so is not evaded by identifying degrees of freedom inside the black hole with those outside. We also address the ER=EPR conjecture of Maldacena and Susskind, arguing that the correlations in generic highly entangled states cannot be geometrized as a smooth wormhole.
The potential behind the horizon of an eternal black hole in classical theories is described in terms of data that is available to an external observer -- the reflection coefficient of a wave that scatters on the black hole. In GR and perturbative string theory (in $α'$), the potential is regular at the horizon and it blows up at the singularity. The exact reflection coefficient, that is known for the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k/U(1)$ black hole and includes non-perturbative $α'$ effects, seems however to imply that there is a highly non-trivial structure just behind the horizon.
We develop the representation of infalling observers and bulk fields in the CFT as a way to understand the black hole interior in AdS. We first discuss properties of CFT states which are dual to black holes. We then show that in the presence of a Killing horizon bulk fields can be decomposed into pieces we call ingoing and outgoing. The ingoing field admits a simple operator representation in the CFT, even inside a small black hole at late times, which leads to a simple CFT description of infalling geodesics. This means classical infalling observers will experience the classical geometry in th…
We establish a version of the Momentum/Complexity (PC) duality between the rate of operator complexity growth and a radial component of bulk momentum for a test system falling into a black hole. In systems of finite entropy, our map remains valid for arbitrarily late times after scrambling. The asymptotic regime of linear complexity growth is associated to a frozen momentum in the interior of the black hole, measured with respect to a time foliation by extremal codimension-one surfaces which saturate without reaching the singularity. The detailed analysis in this paper uses the Volume-Complexi…
A quantum scalar field inside the horizon of a non-rotating BTZ black hole is studied. Not only the near-horizon modes but also the normal modes deep inside the horizon are obtained. It is shown that the matching condition for the normal modes of a scalar field at the horizon does not uniquely determine the normal-mode expansion of a scalar field inside the horizon. By choosing a certain appropriate prescription for removing this ambiguity an integral form of a new scalar propagator for points on both sides of the horizon are obtained. A similar problem may arise in higher-dimensional black ho…
We study the interior of distorted static axisymmetric black holes. We obtain a general interior solution and study its asymptotics both near the horizon and singularity. As a special example, we apply the obtained results to the case of the so-called `caged' black holes.
It is well known that non-perturbative $α'$ corrections to the $SL(2,\IR)/U(1)$ cigar geometry are described via a condensation of a Sine-Liouville operator that schematically can be written as $W^{+}+W^{-}$, where $W^{\pm}$ describe a string with winding number $\pm 1$. This condensation leads to interesting effects in the cigar geometry that take place already at the classical level in string theory. Condensation of the analytically continued Sine-Liouville operator in the Lorentzian $SL(2,\IR)/U(1)$ black hole is problematic. Here, we propose that in the black hole case, the non-perturbativ…
We calculate the interior volume for the three-dimensional Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole in this paper. To that end, we obtain the volume functional and numerically find a path to extremize it, before choosing a spacelike hypersurface to get an asymptotic analytical expression for the interior volume based on the characteristics of the path.
We investigate the time evolution of entanglement negativity following a global quench for mixed state configurations of two disjoint and adjacent intervals in a ($1+1$)-dimensional conformal field theory ($CFT_{1+1}$) dual to the eternal black hole sliced in half by an end of the world brane, through the $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence. To this end we obtain the time evolution of the holographic entanglement negativity for such mixed states from a dual bulk eternal black hole geometry and elucidate the relevant geodesic structures. The holographic entanglement negativity for such mixed states, f…
We consider nonuniform black strings inside their event horizon. We present numerical evidence, that the singularity touches the horizon as the horizon topology changing transition is reached.
A nonstatic Schwarzschild black hole interior solution in Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates is proposed in this paper, by means of a coordinate transformation that changes the spatial coordinate but the timelike one is preserved. The timelike and null geodesic equations are obtained exactly, taking advantage that the spatial z-coordinate is cyclic.
We discuss the interior of a black hole in quantum gravity, in which black holes form and evaporate unitarily. The interior spacetime appears in the sense of complementarity because of special features revealed by the microscopic degrees of freedom when viewed from a semiclassical standpoint. The relation between quantum mechanics and the equivalence principle is subtle, but they are still consistent.
In this paper we discuss to what extent one can infer details of the interior structure of a black hole based on its horizon. Recalling that black hole thermal properties are connected to the non-classical nature of gravity, we circumvent the restrictions of the no hair theorem by postulating that the black hole interior is singularity free due to violations of the usual energy conditions. Further these conditions allow one to establish a one-to-one, holographic projection between Planckian areal "bits" on the horizon and "voxels", representing the gravitational degrees of freedom in the black…
The aim of this paper is to obtain the solution of the Einstein equation in the interior of the black holes by using arbitrary distribution functions; corresponding to Gaussian, Rayleigh, Maxwell-Boltzmann and non-Gaussian distributions. Also we calculate the Hawking temperature, the mass and heat capacity for cosmological horizon and the black hole horizon.
The information loss paradox is often discussed from the perspective of the observers who stay outside of a black hole. However, the interior spacetime of a black hole can be rather nontrivial. We discuss the open problems regarding the volume of a black hole, and whether it plays any role in information storage. We also emphasize the importance of resolving the black hole singularity, if one were to resolve the information loss paradox.
We reconsider the black hole firewall puzzle, emphasizing that quantum error-correction, computational complexity, and pseudorandomness are crucial concepts for understanding the black hole interior. We assume that the Hawking radiation emitted by an old black hole is pseudorandom, meaning that it cannot be distinguished from a perfectly thermal state by any efficient quantum computation acting on the radiation alone. We then infer the existence of a subspace of the radiation system which we interpret as an encoding of the black hole interior. This encoded interior is entangled with the late o…
We study a Hamiltonian quantum formalism of a spherically symmetric space-time which can be identified with the interior of a Schwarzschild black hole. The phase space of this model is spanned by two dynamical variables and their conjugate momenta. It is shown that the classical Lagrangian of the model gives rise the interior metric of a Schwarzschild black hole. We also show that the the mass of such a system is a Dirac observable and then by quantization of the model by Wheeler-DeWitt approach and constructing suitable wave packets we get the mass spectrum of the black hole.
The notion of the black hole singularity and the proof of the singularity theorem were considered great successes in classical general relativity. Singularities had presented deep puzzles to physicists. Conceptual challenges were set up by the intractability of the singularity. The existence of black hole horizons which cover up the interior, including the singularity of the black hole from outside observers, builds an information curtain, further hindering physicists from understanding the nature of the singularity and the interior structure of black holes. The regular black hole is a concept…
Interior volume within the horizon of a black hole is a non-trivial concept which turns out to be very important to explain several issues in the context of quantum nature of black hole. Here we show that the entropy, contained by the {\it maximum} interior volume for massless modes, is proportional to the Bekenstein-Hawking expression. The proportionality constant is less than unity implying the horizon bears maximum entropy than that by the interior. The derivation is very systematic and free of any ambiguity. To do so the precise value of the energy of the modes, living in the interior, is …
The investigation about the volume of a black hole is closely related to the quantum nature of the black hole. The entropy is a significant concept for this. A recent work by Majhi and Samanta [Phys. Lett. B 770 (2017) 314] after us presented a similar conclusion that the entropy associated with the volume is proportional to the surface area of the black hole, but the proportionality coefficient is different from our earlier result. In this paper, we clarify the difference and show that their calculation is unrelated to the interior of the black hole.
Recently it was shown that folded strings are spontaneously created behind the horizon of the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k/U(1)$ black hole. Here we show that these folded strings violate the averaged null energy condition {\it macroscopically}. We discuss possible consequences of this observation on black hole physics in general, and on the information puzzle in particular.
We point out that scenarios in which the universe is born from the interior of a black hole may not posses many of the problems of the Standard Big-Bang (SBB) model. In particular we demonstrate that the horizon problem, flatness, and the structure formation problem might be solved naturally, not necessarily requiring a long period of cosmological inflation. The black hole information loss problem is also discussed. Our conclusions are completely independent of the details of general models.

A new version of the geometry inside a black hole is proposed, on the grounds of an idea given by Doran et al. The spacetime is still time dependent and is a solution of Einstein's equations with a stress tensor corresponding to an anisotropic fluid. The energy density of the fluid is proportional to $1/t^{2}$ as in many dark energy models and the Brown-York quasilocal energy of the black hole interior equals its mass $m$.
We introduce a family of partially entangled thermal states in the SYK model that interpolates between the thermo-field double state and a pure (product) state. The states are prepared by a euclidean path integral describing the evolution over two euclidean time segments separated by a local scaling operator $\mathcal{O}$. We argue that the holographic dual of this class of states consists of two black holes with their interior regions connected via a domain wall, described by the worldline of a massive particle. We compute the size of the interior region and the entanglement entropy as a func…
Understanding the fate of semi-classical black hole solutions at very late times is one of the most important open questions in quantum gravity. In this paper, we provide a path integral definition of the volume of the black hole interior and study it at arbitrarily late times for black holes in various models of two-dimensional gravity. Because of a novel universal cancellation between the contributions of the semi-classical black hole spectrum and some of its non-perturbative corrections, we find that, after a linear growth at early times, the length of the interior saturates at a time, and …
We study the interior structure of five dimensional neutral helical black holes in Einstein gravity and charged helical black holes in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. Inside the neutral helical black holes, the systems evolve to a stable spacelike Kasner singularity. The metric field related to the helical deformation strength exhibits oscillation behavior close to the horizon at low temperature and small helical deformation strength. Inside the charged helical black holes, we show that the inner Cauchy horizon can not exist. The systems also evolve from the horizon to a stable Kasner singularity. W…
Phonon creation inside the horizons of acoustic black holes is investigated using two simple toy models. It is shown that, unlike what occurs in the exterior regions, the spectrum is not thermal. This non-thermality is due to the anomalous scattering that occurs in the interior regions.
The possibility that a black hole could tunnel into a white hole has recently received attention. Here we present a metric that improves the 'firework' metric: it describes the entire process and solves the Einstein equations everywhere except on a small transition surface that corresponds to the quantum tunnelling. We compute the corresponding ray-tracing map from past infinity to future infinity explicitly.
We reveal an $\mathfrak{iso}(2,1)$ Poincaré algebra of conserved charges associated with the dynamics of the interior of black holes. The action of these Noether charges integrates to a symmetry of the gravitational system under the Poincaré group ISO$(2,1)$, which allows to describe the evolution of the geometry inside the black hole in terms of geodesics and horocycles of AdS${}_2$. At the Lagrangian level, this symmetry corresponds to Möbius transformations of the proper time together with translations. Remarkably, this is a physical symmetry changing the state of the system, which also nat…
The phenomenon of mass inflation is shown to occur for a rotating black hole. We demonstrate this feature in $(2+1)$ dimensions by extending the charged spinning BTZ black hole to Vaidya form. We find that the mass function diverges in a manner quantitatively similar to its static counterparts in $(3+1)$, $(2+1)$ and $(1+1)$ dimensions.
The future interior of black holes in AdS/CFT can be described in terms of a quantum circuit. We investigate boundary quantities detecting properties of this quantum circuit. We discuss relations between operator size, quantum complexity, and the momentum of an infalling particle in the black hole interior. We argue that the trajectory of the infalling particle in the interior close to the horizon is related to the growth of operator size. The notion of size here differs slightly from the size which has previously been related to momentum of exterior particles and provides an interesting gener…
Different approaches to quantum gravity conclude that black holes may possess an inner horizon, in addition to the (quantum corrected) outer `Schwarzschild' horizon. In this paper we assume the existence of this inner horizon and explain the physical process that might lead to the tunneling of particles through it. It is shown that the tunneling would produce a flux of particles with a spectrum that deviates from the pure thermal one. Under the appropriate approximation the extremely high temperature of this horizon is calculated for an improved quantum black hole. It is argued that the flux o…
Using the Hamiltonian constraint derived by Ashtekar and Bojowald, we look for pre-classical wave functions in the Schwarzschild interior. In particular, when solving this difference equation by separation of variables, an inequality is obtained relating the Immirzi parameter $γ$ to the quantum ambiguity $δ$ appearing in the model. This bound is violated when we use a natural value for $δ$ based on loop quantum gravity together with a recent proposal for $γ$. We also present numerical solutions of the constraint.
Almheiri, Marolf, Polchinski, and Sully argued that, for a consistent black hole evaporation process, the horizon of a sufficiently old black hole should be replaced by a "firewall" at which an infalling observer burns up, which obviously leads to the violation of the equivalence principle. We propose that once the infalling partner of an outgoing Hawking particle approaches a black hole singularity, it experiences decoherence and the loss of its entanglement with the outgoing Hawking particle. This implies we would no longer need firewalls to avoid the black hole information paradox.
We present concrete construction of interior operators for a black hole which is perturbed by an infalling observer. The construction is independent from the initial states of the black hole while dependent only on the quantum state of the infalling observer. The construction has a natural interpretation from the perspective of the boundary operator's growth, resulting from the collision between operators accounting for the infalling and outgoing modes. The interior partner modes are created once the infalling observer measures the outgoing mode, suggesting that the black hole interior is obse…
Hawking-Bekenstein entropy formula seems to tell us that no quantum degrees of freedom can reside in the interior of a black hole. We suggest that this is a consequence of the fact that the volume of any interior sphere of finite surface area simply vanishes. Obviously, this is not the case in general relativity. However, we show that such a phenomenon does occur in various gravitational theories which admit a spontaneously induced general relativity. In such theories, due to a phase transition (one parameter family degenerates) which takes place precisely at the would have been horizon, the r…
We study the black hole interiors in holographic Weyl semimetals and holographic nodal line semimetals. We find that the black hole singularities are of Kasner form. In the topologically nontrivial phase at low temperature, both the Kasner exponents of the metric fields and the proper time from the horizon to the singularity are almost constant, likely reflecting the topological nature of the topological semimetals. We also find some specific behaviors inside the horizon in each holographic semimetal model.
We consider the classical Hamiltonian of the interior of the Schwarzschild black hole in Ashtekar-Barbero connection formalism. Then, inspired by generalized uncertainty principle models, we deform the classical canonical algebra and derive the effective dynamics of the model under this modification. We show that such a deformation leads to the resolution of the singularity of the black hole and a minimum nonzero radius for the infalling 2-spheres, provided that the deformation parameters are chosen to be negative.
The quantum error correction interpretation of AdS/CFT establishes a sense of fluidity to the bulk/boundary dictionary. We show how this property can be utilized to construct a dictionary for operators behind horizons of pure black holes. We demonstrate this within the context of the SYK model with pure black hole microstates obtained via projecting out a single side of the thermofield double (and perturbed versions thereof). Assuming an erasure subsystem code for the duality between the eternal black hole and the thermofield double, this projection results in a rewiring of the dictionary so a…
We calculate the maximum interior volume, enclosed by the event horizon, of a ($1+D$)-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. Taking into account the mass change due to Hawking radiation, we show that the volume increases towards the end of the evaporation. This fact is not new as it has been observed earlier for four dimensional case. The interesting point we observe is that this increase rate decreases towards the higher value of space dimensions $D$; i.e. it is a decelerated expansion of volume with the increase of spacial dimensions. This implies that for a sufficiently large $D$, the maximu…
