The future interior of black holes in AdS/CFT can be described in terms of a quantum circuit. We investigate boundary quantities detecting properties of this quantum circuit. We discuss relations between operator size, quantum complexity, and the momentum of an infalling particle in the black hole interior. We argue that the trajectory of the infalling particle in the interior close to the horizon is related to the growth of operator size. The notion of size here differs slightly from the size which has previously been related to momentum of exterior particles and provides an interesting generalization. The fact that both exterior and interior momentum are related to operator size growth is a manifestation of complementarity.
We present concrete construction of interior operators for a black hole which is perturbed by an infalling observer. The construction is independent from the initial states of the black hole while dependent only on the quantum state of the infalling observer. The construction has a natural interpretation from the perspective of the boundary operator's growth, resulting from the collision between operators accounting for the infalling and outgoing modes. The interior partner modes are created once the infalling observer measures the outgoing mode, suggesting that the black hole interior is obse…
Recently we pointed out that the black hole interior operators can be reconstructed by using the Hayden-Preskill recovery protocols. Building on this observation, we propose a resolution of the firewall problem by presenting a state-independent reconstruction of interior operators. Our construction avoids the non-locality problem which plagued the "$A=R_{B}$" or "$\text{ER}=\text{EPR}$" proposals. We show that the gravitational backreaction by the infalling observer, who simply falls into a black hole, disentangles the outgoing mode from the early radiation. The infalling observer crosses the …
We revisit the "state-dependence" of the map that we proposed recently between bulk operators in the interior of a large AdS black hole and operators in the boundary CFT. By refining recent versions of the information paradox, we show that this feature is necessary for the CFT to successfully describe local physics behind the horizon --- not only for single-sided black holes but even in the eternal black hole. We show that state-dependence is invisible to an infalling observer who cannot differentiate these operators from those of ordinary quantum effective field theory. Therefore the infallin…
Almheiri, Marolf, Polchinski, and Sully argued that, for a consistent black hole evaporation process, the horizon of a sufficiently old black hole should be replaced by a "firewall" at which an infalling observer burns up, which obviously leads to the violation of the equivalence principle. We propose that once the infalling partner of an outgoing Hawking particle approaches a black hole singularity, it experiences decoherence and the loss of its entanglement with the outgoing Hawking particle. This implies we would no longer need firewalls to avoid the black hole information paradox.
We develop the representation of infalling observers and bulk fields in the CFT as a way to understand the black hole interior in AdS. We first discuss properties of CFT states which are dual to black holes. We then show that in the presence of a Killing horizon bulk fields can be decomposed into pieces we call ingoing and outgoing. The ingoing field admits a simple operator representation in the CFT, even inside a small black hole at late times, which leads to a simple CFT description of infalling geodesics. This means classical infalling observers will experience the classical geometry in th…
The AMPS paradox challenges black hole complementarity by apparently constructing a way for an observer to bring information from the outside of the black hole into its interior if there is no drama at its horizon, making manifest a violation of monogamy of entanglement. We propose a new resolution to the paradox: this violation cannot be explicitly checked by an infalling observer in the finite proper time they have to live after crossing the horizon. Our resolution depends on a weak relaxation of the no-drama condition (we call it "little drama") which is the "complementarity dual" of scramb…
The firewall paradox states that an observer falling into an old black hole must see a violation of unitarity, locality, or the equivalence principle. Motivated by this remarkable conflict, we analyze the causal structure of black hole spacetimes in order to determine whether all the necessary ingredients for the paradox fit within a single observer's causal patch. We particularly focus on the question of whether the interior partner modes of the outgoing Hawking quanta can, in principle, be measured by an infalling observer. Since the relevant modes are spread over the entire sphere, we answe…
Using Papadodimas and Raju construction of operators describing the interior of a black hole, we present a general relation between partition functions of operators describing inside and outside the black hole horizon. In particular for an eternal black hole the partition function of the interior modes may be given in terms those partition functions associated with the modes of left and right exteriors. By making use of this relation we observe that setting a finite UV cutoff will enforce us to have a cutoff behind the horizon whose value is fixed by the UV cutoff. The resultant cutoff is in a…
We study the recent claim that black NS5-branes are filled with folded strings. We calculate, in the near-extremal case, the number of folded strings at the black fivebranes interior, using different approaches, and get the exact same answer. The backreaction of the folded strings leads us to argue that the interior of the black fivebrane is AdS_2 (times a compact manifold) and that infalling matter cannot reach the interior, due to a shock wave at the horizon. These considerations also suggest a novel insight into the black fivebranes entropy.
We consider the classical Hamiltonian of the interior of the Schwarzschild black hole in Ashtekar-Barbero connection formalism. Then, inspired by generalized uncertainty principle models, we deform the classical canonical algebra and derive the effective dynamics of the model under this modification. We show that such a deformation leads to the resolution of the singularity of the black hole and a minimum nonzero radius for the infalling 2-spheres, provided that the deformation parameters are chosen to be negative.
We describe the experience of an observer falling into a black hole using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In order to do this, we reconstruct the local bulk operators measured by the observer along his trajectory outside the black hole. We then extend our construction beyond the black hole horizon. We show that this is possible because of an effective doubling of the observables in the boundary theory, when it is in a pure state that is close to the thermal state. Our construction allows us to rephrase questions about information-loss and the structure of the metric at the horizon in terms of more…
In this note I elaborate on some features of a recent proposal of Papadodimas and Raju for a CFT description of the interior of a one-sided AdS black hole in a pure state. I clarify the treatment of 1/N corrections, and explain how the proposal is able to avoid some of the pitfalls that have disrupted other recent ideas. I argue however that the proposal has the uncomfortable property that states in the CFT Hilbert space do not have definite physical interpretations, unlike in ordinary quantum mechanics. I also contrast the "state-dependence" of the proposal with more familiar phenomena, argui…
We establish a version of the Momentum/Complexity (PC) duality between the rate of operator complexity growth and a radial component of bulk momentum for a test system falling into a black hole. In systems of finite entropy, our map remains valid for arbitrarily late times after scrambling. The asymptotic regime of linear complexity growth is associated to a frozen momentum in the interior of the black hole, measured with respect to a time foliation by extremal codimension-one surfaces which saturate without reaching the singularity. The detailed analysis in this paper uses the Volume-Complexi…
We study the smoothness of the black hole horizon in the Hayden-Preskill thought experiment by using two particular toy models based on variants of Haar random unitary. The first toy model corresponds to the case where the coarse-grained entropy of a black hole is larger than its entanglement entropy. We find that, while the outgoing mode and the remaining black hole are entangled, the Hayden-Preskill recovery cannot be performed. The second toy model corresponds to the case where the system consists of low energy soft modes and high energy heavy modes. We find that the Hayden-Preskill recover…
We build on the observation by Hawking, Perry and Strominger that a global black hole space-time supports a large number of soft hair degrees of freedom to shed new light on the firewall argument by Almheiri, Marolf, Polchinski, and Sully. We propose that the soft hair Goldstone mode is encoded in a classical transition function that connects the asymptotic and near horizon region. The entropy carried by the soft hair is part of the black hole entropy and encoded in the outside geometry. We argue that the infalling observer automatically measures the classical value of the soft mode before rea…
We explore a version of black hole complementarity, where an approximate semiclassical effective field theory for interior infalling degrees of freedom emerges holographically from an exact evolution of exterior degrees of freedom. The infalling degrees of freedom have a complementary description in terms of outgoing Hawking radiation and must eventually decohere with respect to the exterior Hamiltonian, leading to a breakdown of the semiclassical description for an infaller. Trace distance is used to quantify the difference between the complementary time evolutions, and to define a decoherenc…
We present an explicit reconstruction of the interior of an AdS$_2$ black hole in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, that is entirely formulated in the dual SYK model and makes no direct reference to the gravitational bulk. We do this by introducing a probe "observer" in the right wormhole exterior and using the prescription of [arXiv:2009.04476] to transport SYK operators along the probe's infalling worldline and into the black hole interior, using an appropriate SYK modular Hamiltonian. Our SYK computation recovers the precise proper time at which signals sent from the left boundary are registered b…
Within the framework of black hole complementarity, a proposal is made for an approximate interior effective field theory description. For generic correlators of local operators on generic black hole states, it agrees with the exact exterior description in a region of overlapping validity, up to corrections that are too small to be measured by typical infalling observers.
We propose a modified version of the Horowitz-Maldacena final-state boundary condition based upon a matter-radiation thermalization hypothesis on the Black Hole interior, which translates into a particular entangled state with thermal Schmidt coefficients. We investigate the consequences of this proposal for matter entering the horizon, as described by a Canonical density matrix characterized by the matter temperature $T$. The emitted radiation is explicitly calculated and is shown to follow a thermal spectrum with an effective temperature $T_{eff}$. We analyse the evaporation process in the q…
The regular black hole solution arising as a spherically symmetric vacuum solution of Born-Infeld gravity possesses an asymptotic interior structure which is very well described by a four dimensional generalization of the non-rotating BTZ metric. According to this picture no singularity exists, and instead, infalling observers experience a constant curvature manifold as they travel towards future null infinity. This is characterized by the BTZ event horizon. The exterior structure of the black hole is also studied, and it is shown that it corresponds to the Schwarzschild solution provided the …
We have proposed a model geometry for the interior of a regular black hole mimicker, the frozen star, whose most startling feature is that each spherical shell in its interior is a surface of infinite redshift. The geometry is a solution of the Einstein equations which is sourced by an exotic matter with maximally negative radial pressure. The frozen star geometry was previously presented in singular coordinates for which $-g_{tt}$ and $g^{rr}$ vanish in the bulk and connect smoothly to the Schwarzschild exterior. Additionally, the geometry was mildly singular in the center of the star. Here, …
When absorbing boundary conditions are used to evaporate a black hole in AdS/CFT, we show that there is a phase transition in the location of the quantum Ryu-Takayanagi surface, at precisely the Page time. The new RT surface lies slightly inside the event horizon, at an infalling time approximately the scrambling time $β/2π\log S_{BH}$ into the past. We can immediately derive the Page curve, using the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, and the Hayden-Preskill decoding criterion, using entanglement wedge reconstruction. Because part of the interior is now encoded in the early Hawking radiation, the decrea…
The black hole final state proposal reconciles the infalling vacuum with the unitarity of the Hawking radiation, but only for some experiments. We study experiments that first verify the exterior, then the interior purification of the same Hawking particle. (This is the same protocol that renders the firewall paradox operationally meaningful in standard quantum mechanics.) We show that the decoherence functional fails to be diagonal, even upon inclusion of external "pointer" systems. Hence, probabilities for outcomes of these measurements are not defined. We conclude that the final state propo…
We argue that the infall time to the singularity in the interior of a black hole, is always related to a classical thermalization time. This indicates that singularities are related to the equilibration of infalling objects with the microstates of the black hole, but only in the sense of classical equilibration. When the singularity is reached, the quantum state of the black hole, initially a tensor product of the state of the infalling object and that of the black hole, is not yet a "generic" state in the enlarged Hilbert space, so its complexity is not maximal. We relate these observations t…
We present exact solutions describing rotating, inhomogeneous dust with generic initial data in 2+1 dimensional AdS spacetime and show how they are smoothly matched to the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) solution in the exterior. The metrics, which are the rotational analogues of the 2+1 dimensional LeMaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) family, are described by their angular momentum and one additional constant which, together with the angular momentum, determines the energy density of the dust cloud. The weak energy condition gives a constraint on the angular momentum profile inside the cloud. Solutio…
Black holes past their Page times should act as efficient scramblers and information mirrors. The information of the infalling bits are rapidly encoded by the old black hole in the Hawking quanta, but it should take time that is exponential in the Page time entropy to decode the interior. Motivated by the features of fragmentation instability of near-extremal black holes, we construct a simple phenomenological model of the black hole as a lattice of interacting nearly $AdS_2$ throats with gravitational hair charges propagating over the lattice. We study the microstate solutions and their respo…
Previous work has explored the connections between three concepts -- operator size, complexity, and the bulk radial momentum of an infalling object -- in the context of JT gravity and the SYK model. In this paper we investigate the higher dimensional generalizations of these connections. We use a toy model to study the growth of an operator when perturbing the vacuum of a CFT. From circuit analysis we relate the operator growth to the rate of increase of complexity and check it by complexity-volume duality. We further give an empirical formula relating complexity and the bulk radial momentum t…
Spherical energy shells in General Relativity tend to collapse due to gravitational effects and/or due to tension effects. Shell stabilization may be achieved by modifying the gravitational properties of the background spacetime. Thus, gravastars consist of stiff matter shells with an interior deSitter space and an exterior Schwarzshild spacetime whose attractive gravity balances the interior repulsive gravity of the interior deSitter spacetime leading to a stable stiff matter shell. Similar stabilization effects may be achieved by considering rotating shells. Here we study the stability of sl…
The near-horizon field B of an old black hole is maximally entangled with the early Hawking radiation R, by unitarity of the S-matrix. But B must be maximally entangled with the black hole interior A, by the equivalence principle. Causal patch complementarity fails to reconcile these conflicting requirements. The system B can be probed by a freely falling observer while there is still time to turn around and remain outside the black hole. Therefore, the entangled state of the BR system is dictated by unitarity even in the infalling patch. If, by monogamy of entanglement, B is not entangled wit…
It has been taken as a truth that collapsing matter can eventually cross the horizon and enter into the interior of a black hole in a finite proper time. However, the Rindler/tachyon dual description we suggest recently implies that this should not be the case. A test particle falling towards the event horizon of a non-extreme black hole can actually be viewed as an unstable particle, whose dynamics is described by the tachyon field theory. This means that the collapsing process of a free particle in Rindler space is essentially a tachyon condensation process. In terms of the results in tachyo…
If one attempts to add momentum-carrying waves to a black string then the solution develops a singularity at the horizon; this is a manifestation of the 'no hair theorem' for black objects. However individual microstates of a black string do not have a horizon, and so the above theorem does not apply. We construct a perturbation that adds momentum to a family of microstates of the extremal D1-D5 string. This perturbation is analogous to the 'singleton' mode localized at the boundary of AdS; to leading order it is pure gauge in the AdS interior of the geometry.
It was proposed recently that the black hole may undergo a transition to the state, where inside the horizon the Fermi surface is formed that reveals an analogy with the recently discovered type II Weyl semimetals. In this scenario the low energy effective theory outside of the horizon is the Standard Model, which describes excitations that reside near a certain point $P^{(0)}$ in momentum space of the hypothetical unified theory. Inside the horizon the low energy physics is due to the excitations that reside at the points in momentum space close to the Fermi surface. We argue that those point…
Generalizations of the Black Hole geometry of Bañados, Teitelboim and Zanelli (BTZ) are presented. The theory is three-dimensional vacuum Einstein theory with a negative cosmological constant. The $n$-black-hole solution has $n$ asymptotically anti-de Sitter ``exterior" regions that join in one ``interior" region. The geometry of each exterior region is identical to that of a BTZ geometry; in particular, each contains a black hole horizon that surrounds (as judged from that exterior) all the other horizons. The interior region acts as a closed universe containing $n$ black holes. The initial s…
We investigate the gravitational collapse of a non-rotating $n$-dimensional BTZ black hole in AdS space in the context of both classical and quantum mechanics. This is done by first deriving the conserved mass of a "spherically" symmetric domain wall, which is taken as the classical Hamiltonian of the black hole. Upon deriving the conserved mass, we also point out that, for a "spherically" symmetric shell, there is an easy and straight-forward way of determining the conserved mass, which is related to the proper time derivative of the interior and exterior times. This method for determining th…
We present a quantum theory of black hole (and other) horizons, in which the standard assumptions of complementarity are preserved without contradicting information theoretic considerations. After the scrambling time, the quantum mechanical structure of a black hole becomes that of an eternal black hole at the microscopic level. In particular, the stretched horizon degrees of freedom and the states entangled with them can be mapped into the near-horizon modes in the two exterior regions of an eternal black hole, whose mass is taken to be that of the evolving black hole at each moment. Salient …
Analogue black holes, which can mimic the kinetic aspects of real black holes, have been proposed for many years. The growth of the radial momentum of test particles toward the acoustic horizon is calculated for acoustic black holes in flat and curved spacetimes. Surprisingly, for a freely infalling vortex approaching the acoustic black hole, the Lyapunov exponent of the growth of the momentum at the horizon saturates the chaos bound $Λ_{\rm Lyapunov}\leq 2 πT$. We investigate the orbits of test vortices and sound wave rays in the $2+1$-dimensional "curved" spacetime of an acoustic black hole.…
One of the effects of noncommutative coordinate operators is that the delta-function connected to the quantum mechanical amplitude between states sharp to the position operator gets smeared by a Gaussian distribution. Although this is not the full account of effects of noncommutativity, this effect is in particular important, as it removes the point singularities of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström solutions. In this context, it seems to be of some importance to probe also into ring-like singularities which appear in the Kerr case. In particular, starting with an anisotropic energy-momentu…

Non-commutative geometries have been proposed as an approach to quantum gravity and have led to the construction of non-commutative black holes, whose interior singularities are purportedly eliminated due to quantum effects. Here we find evidence that these black holes are in fact unstable, with infalling matter near the Cauchy (inner) horizon being subject to an infinite blueshift of the type that has been repeatedly demonstrated for the Reissner-Nordstr\(\ddot{\text{o}}\)m black hole. This instability is present even when an ultraviolet cutoff (induced by anticipated non-commutative geometri…
