We study quantum-gravitational effects on the response of an infalling detector as it crosses the horizon of a near-extremal black hole in the framework of quantum JT gravity. These effects are incorporated via the gravitational dressing needed to define both the infalling trajectory and the local observables probed by the detector in a diffeomorphism-invariant way. In the black hole exterior, a preferred choice of dressing to the Schwarzian mode of JT gravity can be motivated in connection to geometric modular flow. We show how to extend this dressing to the black hole interior, defining local observables that are gravitationally dressed to both boundaries in the thermofield double state. The gravitational dressing connects the near-horizon region to the IR sector of the Schwarzian theory, leading to measurable effects as the horizon is approached. We find that the infalling detector is able to locally determine the location of the horizon and its temperature, violating the equivalence principle, but without encountering a firewall.
An atom falling freely into a Kerr black hole in a Boulware-like vacuum is shown to emit radiation with a Planck spectrum at the Hawking temperature. For a cloud of falling atoms with random initial times, the radiation is thermal. The existence of this radiation is due to the acceleration of the vacuum field modes with respect to the falling atom. Its properties can be traced to the dominant role of conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) in the neighborhood of the event horizon. We display this effect for a scalar field, though the acceleration radiation has a universal conformal behavior that is …
We globally embed (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS black holes in massive gravity into (5+2)-dimensional flat spacetimes. Making use of embedding coordinates, we directly obtain the generalized Hawking, Unruh and freely falling temperatures in a Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS black hole due to massive graviton effects.
We carry out the first investigation of the entanglement and mutual information harvesting protocols for detectors freely falling into a black hole. Working in $(1+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole spacetime, we consider two pointlike Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detectors in different combinations of free-falling and static trajectories. Employing a generalization of relative velocity suitable for curved spacetimes, we find that the amount of correlations extracted from the black hole vacuum, at least outside the near-horizon regime, is largely kinematic in origin (i.e. it is mostly due to the r…
The near horizon aspects (and beyond) of a black hole metric, which belongs to a large class of static spherically symmetric black holes, are considered here. It has been realized recently that an atom falling into a black hole leads to the generation of acceleration radiation through virtual transitions. In recent studies, it has been argued that this acceleration radiation can be understood from the near horizon physics of the black hole. The near horizon approximation leads to conformal symmetry in the problem. We go beyond the near horizon approximation in our analysis. This breaks the con…

In this work, we have investigated the phenomenon of acceleration radiation exhibited by an atom falling into a quantum corrected Schwarzschild black hole. We observe that the excitation-probability of the atom with simultaneous emission of a photon satisfies the equivalence principle when we compare it to the excitation probability of a mirror accelerating with respect to an atom. We also demonstrate the validity of the equivalence principle for a generic black hole geometry. Then we calculate the horizon brightened acceleration radiation (HBAR) entropy for this quantum corrected black hole g…
In this paper we construct a solvable toy model of the quantum dynamics of the interior of a spherical black hole with falling spherical scalar field excitations. We first argue about how some aspects of the quantum gravity dynamics of realistic black holes emitting Hawking radiation can be modelled using Kantowski-Sachs solutions with a massless scalar field when one focuses on the deep interior region $r\ll M$ (including the singularity). Further, we show that in the $r\ll M$ regime, and in suitable variables, the KS model becomes exactly solvable at both the classical and quantum levels. Th…
We show that atoms falling from outside through a cavity into a black hole (BH) emit acceleration radiation which to a distant observer looks much like Hawking BH radiation. In particular, we find the entropy of the acceleration radiation via a simple laser-like analysis. We call this entropy Horizon Brightened Acceleration Radiation (HBAR) entropy to distinguish it from the BH entropy of Bekenstein and Hawking.
By using complex angular momentum techniques, we study the electromagnetic radiation generated by a charged particle falling radially from infinity into a Schwarzschild black hole. We consider both the case of a particle initially at rest and that of a particle projected with a relativistic velocity and we construct complex angular momentum representations and Regge pole approximations of the partial wave expansions defining the Maxwell scalar $ϕ_2$ and the energy spectrum $dE/dω$ observed at spatial infinity. We show, in particular, that Regge pole approximations involving only one Regge pole…
Black hole kinematics: the "in"-vacuum energy density and flux for different observers
Electromagnetic radiation from collisions at almost the speed of light: an extremely relativistic charged particle falling into a Schwarzschild black hole
Calculations of the inner mass function of the Hayward regular black hole with fluxes are reviewed and rederived. We present detailed calculations of the inner mass function in two forms of the Ori approach (the ingoing flux is continuous, the outgoing flux is modeled by a thin null shell) and compare them with calculations in Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. A formal reason of different results is discussed. The energy density of scalar perturbations propagating from the event horizon into the Hayward black hole measured by a free falling observer near the inner horizon is calculated.
The growth of the "size" of operators is an important diagnostic of quantum chaos. In arXiv:1802.01198 [hep-th] it was conjectured that the holographic dual of the size is proportional to the average radial component of the momentum of the particle created by the operator. Thus the growth of operators in the background of a black hole corresponds to the acceleration of the particle as it falls toward the horizon. In this note we will use the momentum-size correspondence as a tool to study scrambling in the field of a near-extremal charged black hole. The agreement with previous work provides a…
Black hole membrane paradigm suggests to consider the black hole horizon as a fluid membrane. The membrane has a particular energy-momentum tensor which characterizes the interactions with the falling matter. In this paper, we show that we can construct an action from the scalar field on the horizon which can give the same energy-momentum tensor for the membrane. That is, the membrane can be described effectively by the scalar field on it.
We obtain a (3+3)-dimensional global flat embedding of the generalized (2+1) charged Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes in massive gravity. We also study the local free-fall temperatures for freely falling observers starting from rest and investigate the effect of the charge and graviton mass in free-fall temperatures.
We study real-time propagation of a massive scalar field on the extremal BTZ black hole spacetime, focusing on the Aretakis instability of the event horizon. We obtain a simple time-domain expression for the $\textrm{AdS}_3$ retarded Green function with Dirichlet boundary conditions and construct the corresponding time-domain BTZ retarded Green function using the method of images. The field decays at different rates on and off the horizon, indicating that transverse derivatives grow with time on the horizon (Aretakis instability). We solve the null geodesic equation in full generality and show…
A stationary and spherically symmetric black hole (For example, Reissner-Nordstrom black hole or Kerr-Newman black hole) has at most one singularity and two horizons. One horizon is the outer event horizon and the other is the inner Cauchy horizon. Can we construct static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with N horizons and M singularities? De Sitter cosmos has only one apparent horizon. Can we construct cosmos solutions with N horizons? In this article, we present the static and spherically symmetric black hole and cosmos solutions with N horizons and M singularities in the vect…
A new solution of four-dimensional vacuum General Relativity is presented. It describes the near horizon region of the extreme (maximally spinning) binary black hole system with two identical extreme Kerr black holes held in equilibrium by a massless strut. This is the first example of a non-supersymmetric, asymptotically flat near horizon extreme binary black hole geometry of two uncharged black holes. The black holes are co-rotating, and the solution is uniquely specified by the mass. The binary extreme system has finite entropy. The distance between the black holes is fixed, but there is a …
