We report on the lattice and spin dynamics in the monopnictide CrAs using polarized Raman scattering. This system exhibits a first-order magneto-structural phase transition at T_N~ 265 K, below which the magnetic moments of Cr form an incommensurate double helical magnetic structure while the unit cell volume abruptly expands. Across the transition, the frequencies of the fully symmetric Ag phonons strongly renormalize, which along with the results of first-principle calculations suggest the presence of a sizeable coupling of the phonons to the magnetic degrees of freedom in this compound. In addition, we observe two broad modes around 350 and 1700 cm-1 in the magnetic phase, which we associate with two-magnon Raman scattering. This work provides one of the few examples of magnetic Raman scattering from a non-collinear magnet.
The discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in helimagnets (CrAs, MnP) has attracted considerable interest in understanding the relationship between complex magnetism and unconventional superconductivity. However, the nature of the magnetism and magnetic interactions that drive the unusual double-helical magnetic order in these materials remains unclear. Here, we report neutron scattering measurements of magnetic excitations in CrAs single crystals at ambient pressure. Our experiments reveal well defined spin wave excitations up to about 150 meV with a pseudogap below 7 meV, which can …
Low energy excitations in the multiferroic material TbMnO3 have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Our observations reveal the existence of two peaks at 30 cm-1 and 60 cm-1. They are observed in the cycloidal phase below the Curie temperature but not in the sinusoidal phase, suggesting their magnetoelectric origin. While the peak energies coincide with the frequencies of electromagnons measured previously by transmission spectroscopy, they show surprisingly different selection rules, with the 30 cm-1 excitation enhanced by the electric field of light along the spontaneous polarization. T…
We report a polarized Raman study of Weyl semimetal TaAs. We observe all the optical phonons, with energies and symmetries consistent with our first-principles calculations. We detect additional excitations assigned to multiple-phonon excitations. These excitations are accompanied by broad peaks separated by 140~cm$^{-1}$ that are also most likely associated with multiple-phonon excitations. We also noticed a sizable B$_1$ component for the spectral background, for which the origin remains unclear.
We determine the nature of coupled phonons and magnetic excitations in AlFeO3 using inelastic light scattering from 5 K to 315 K covering a spectral range from 100-2200 cm-1 and complementary first-principles density functional theory-based calculations. A strong spin-phonon coupling and magnetic ordering induced phonon renormalization are evident in (a) anomalous temperature dependence of many modes with frequencies below 850 cm-1, particularly near the magnetic transition temperature Tc ~ 250 K, (b) distinct changes in band positions of high frequency Raman bands between 1100-1800 cm-1, in p…
We investigated 10 to 200 nm thick black phosphorus flakes on SiO2/Si and polyimide substrates by Angle-resolved Polarized Raman spectra (ARPRS) using 442 nm excitation wavelength. The results revealed that ARPRS with 442 nm excitation can provide unambiguous, convenient, non-destructive and fast determination of BP's crystallographic orientation. The substrate and thickness dependencies of Raman spectra and Raman tensor elements were studied. These dependencies were shown to be influenced by Raman excitation laser heating effect. By comparing with in-situ Raman measurements at elevated temper…
The strong coupling between spin, lattice and electronic degrees of freedom in magnetic materials can produce interesting phenomena, including multiferroic and magnetodielectric (MD) behavior, and exotic coupled excitations, such as electromagnons. We present a temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent inelastic light (Raman) scattering study that reveals the emergence of vibronic modes, i.e., coupled vibrational and crystal-electric-field (CEF) electronic excitations, in the unconventional rare-earth MD material, $\text{Ce}_2\text{O}_3$. The energies and intensities of these emergent vibronic…
Low energy optical modes of MBE-grown In1-xGaxN thin films with different values of x are investigated using Raman spectroscopy. We also studied the influence of Raman excitation frequency using red and green lasers on scattering intensity of various Raman modes. For those In1-xGaxN alloys whose bandgap energy is close to the red laser, a huge enhancement in the intensities of A1(LO) mode and its 2A1(LO) replica is observed when excited with red laser as compared to the green laser excitation. We found that the energies of longitudinal optical modes (A1 (LO) and 2A1 (LO)) vary nonlinearly unli…
The quadruple Calcium manganite (CaMn7O12) is a multiferroic material that exhibits a giant magnetically-induced ferroelectric polarization which makes it very interesting for magnetoelectric applications. Here, we report the Raman spectroscopy study on this compound of both the phonon modes and the low energy excitations from 4 K to room temperature. A detailed study of the Raman active phonon excitations shows that three phonon modes evidence a spin-phonon coupling at TN2 = 50 K. In particular, we show that the mode at 432 cm-1 associated to Mn(B)O6 (B position of the perovskite) rotations a…
Resonant soft X-ray Raman scattering measurements on NiO have been made at photon energies across the Ni 2p absorption edges. The details of the spectral features are identified as Raman scattering due to d-d and charge-transfer excitations. The spectra are interpreted within the single impurity Anderson model, including multiplets, crystal-field and charge-transfer effects. At threshold excitation, the spectral features consists of triplet-triplet and triplet-singlet transitions of the 3d8 configuration. For excitation energies corresponding to the charge-transfer region in the Ni 2p X-ray ab…
We report magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and Raman scattering investigations of alpha-TeVO4 containing V-O edge-sharing chains. These chains promote a system of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg alternating exchange chains with pronounced spin frustration. The magnetic susceptibility and Raman scattering evidence a crossover at T* = 85 K with different slopes of the reciprocal susceptibility and a magnetic phase transition into a long-range-ordered state at Tc = 16 K. From Raman scattering data a strong mutual coupling between lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom …
In a recent report sum-frequency excitation of a Raman-active phonon was experimentally demonstrated for the first time. This mechanism is the sibling of impulsive stimulated Raman scattering, in which difference-frequency components of a light field excite a Raman-active mode. Here we propose that ionic Raman scattering analogously has a sum-frequency counterpart. We compare the four Raman mechanisms, photonic and ionic difference- and sum-frequency excitation, for three different example materials using a generalized oscillator model for which we calculate the parameters with density functio…
We have performed Raman scattering investigations on the high energy magnetic excitations in a BiFeO$_3$ single crystal as a function of both temperature and laser excitation energy. A strong feature observed at 1250 cm$^{-1}$ in the Raman spectra has been previously assigned to two phonon overtone. We show here that its unusual frequency shift with the excitation energy and its asymmetric temperature dependent Fano lineshape reveal a strong coupling to magnetic excitations. In the same energy range, we have also identified the two-magnon excitation with a temperature dependence very similar t…
The temperature dependence of phonon excitations and the presence of spin phonon coupling in polycrystalline Pr2NiMnO6 samples were studied using micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Magnetic properties show a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition at 228 K and a saturation magnetization close to 4.95 \muB/f.u.. Three distinct Raman modes at 657, 642, and 511 cm-1 are observed. The phonon excitations show a clear hardening due to anharmonicity from 300 K down to 10 K. Further, temperature dependence of the 657 cm-1 mode shows only a small softening. This reflects the presence of…
Time-resolved spontaneous Raman spectroscopy serves as a probe for incoherent quasiparticle and collective excitation dynamics, and allows to distinguish symmetry changes across a photoinduced phase transition through the inelastic light scattering selection rules. Largely unexplored is the role of the Raman resonance enhancement in the time-domain, and the transient interaction between scattering from quasiparticles and collective excitations, with the latter interaction leading to a Fano interference. In this work, we report on the observation of a phonon Raman tensor quench and Fano interfe…
In stimulated Raman scattering, two incident optical waves induce a force oscillating at the difference of the two light frequencies. This process has enabled important applications such as the excitation and coherent control of phonons and magnons by femtosecond laser pulses. Here, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate the so far neglected up-conversion counterpart of this process: THz sum-frequency excitation of a Raman-active phonon mode, which is tantamount to two-photon absorption by an optical transition between two adjacent vibrational levels. Coherent control of an optical la…
We present a flexible and efficient ultrafast time-resolved spontaneous Raman spectroscopy setup to study collective excitation and quasi-particle dynamics in quantum matter. The setup has a broad energy tuning range extending from the visible to near infrared spectral regions for both the pump excitation and Raman probe pulses. Additionally, the balance between energy and time-resolution can be controlled. A high light collecting efficiency is realized by high numerical aperture collection optics and a high-throughput flexible spectrometer. We demonstrate the functionality of the setup with a…
Graphene is an ideal platform to study the coherence of quantum interference pathways by tuning doping or laser excitation energy. The latter produces a Raman excitation profile that provides direct insight into the lifetimes of intermediate electronic excitations and, therefore, on quantum interference, which has so far remained elusive. Here, we control the Raman scattering pathways by tuning the laser excitation energy in graphene doped up to 1.05eV, above what achievable with electrostatic doping. The Raman excitation profile of the G mode indicates its position and full width at half maxi…
Topological Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have attracted widespread interests due to the chiral Weyl fermions and surface Fermi arcs that enable unique optical and transport phenomena. In this work, we present angle-resolved Raman spectroscopy of TaP, a prototypical noncentrosymmetric WSM, for five excitation wavelengths ranging from 364 to 785 nm. The Raman active modes, $A_1$, $B_1^1$, and $B_1^2$ modes, exhibit two main unique features beyond the conventional Raman theory. First, the relative intensities of Raman active modes change as a function of the excitation wavelength. Second, angle-resolve…

We present a Raman study of Ar(+)-bombarded graphene samples with increasing ion doses. This allows us to have a controlled, increasing, amount of defects. We find that the ratio between the D and G peak intensities for a given defect density strongly depends on the laser excitation energy. We quantify this effect and present a simple equation for the determination of the point defect density in graphene via Raman spectroscopy for any visible excitation energy. We note that, for all excitations, the D to G intensity ratio reaches a maximum for an inter-defect distance ~3nm. Thus, a given ratio…
We study the optical properties of a single, semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) that is partially suspended across a trench and partially supported by a SiO2-substrate. By tuning the laser excitation energy across the E33 excitonic resonance of the suspended CNT segment, the scattering intensities of the principal Raman transitions, the radial breathing mode (RBM), the G-mode and the D-mode show strong resonance enhancement of up to three orders of magnitude. In the supported part of the CNT, despite a loss of Raman scattering intensity of up to two orders of magnitude, we reco…
Raman investigation of MoSe2 was carried out with eight different excitation energies. Seven peaks, including E1g, A1g, E2g1, and A2u2 peaks are observed in the range of 100-400 cm-1. The phonon modes are assigned by comparing the peak positions with theoretical calculations. The intensities of the peaks are enhanced at different excitation energies through resonance with different optical transitions. The A1g mode is enhanced at 1.58 and 3.82 eV, which are near the A exciton energy and the band-to-band transition between higher energy bands, respectively. The E2g1 mode is strongly enhanced wi…
In order to deepen in the knowledge of the vibrational properties of 2-dimensional MoS2 atomic layers, a complete and systematic Raman scattering analysis has been performed using both bulk single crystal MoS2 samples and atomically thin MoS2 layers. Raman spectra have been measured under non-resonant and resonant conditions using seven different excitation wavelengths from near-infrared (NIR) to ultraviolet (UV). These measurements have allowed to observe and identify 41 peaks, among which 22 have not been previously experimentally observed for this compound, characterizing the existence of d…
Resonance Raman scattering, which probes electrons, phonons and their interplay in crystals, is extensively used in two-dimensional materials. Here we investigate Raman modes in MoSe$_2$ at different laser excitation energies from 2.33 eV down to the near infrared 1.16 eV. The Raman spectrum at 1.16 eV excitation energy shows that the intensity of high-order modes is strongly enhanced if compared to the first-order phonon modes intensity due to resonance effects with the MoSe$_2$ indirect band gap. By comparing the experimental results with the two-phonon density of states calculated with dens…
We have revisited the still unresolved puzzle of the dispersion of the Raman disordered-induced D band as a function of laser excitation photon energy E$_L$ in graphite-like materials. We propose that the D-mode is a combination of an optic phonon at the K-point in the Brillioun zone and an acoustic phonon whose momentum is determined uniquely by the double resonance condition. The fit of the experimental data with the double-resonance model yields the reduced effective mass of 0.025m$_{e}$ for the electron-hole pairs corresponding to the A$_{2}$ transition, in agreement with other experiments…
The double-resonance (DR) Raman process is a signature of all sp2 carbon material and provide fundamental information of the electronic structure and phonon dispersion in graphene, carbon nanotubes and different graphite-type materials. We have performed in this work the study of different DR Raman bands of rhombohedral graphite using five different excitation laser energies and obtained the dispersion of the different DR features by changing the laser energy. Results are compared with those of Bernal graphite and shows that rhombohedral graphite exhibit a richer DR Raman spectrum. For example…
We use polarized magneto-Raman scattering to study purely electronic excitations and the electron-phonon coupling in bulk graphite. At a temperature of 4.2 K and in magnetic fields up to 28 T we observe $K$-point electronic excitations involving Landau bands with $Δ|n|=0$ and with $Δ|n|=\pm2$ that can be selected by controlling the angular momentum of the excitation laser and of the scattered light. The magneto-phonon effect involving the $E_{2g}$ optical phonon and $K$-point inter Landau bands electronic excitations with $Δ|n|=\pm1$ is revealed and analyzed within a model taking into account …
Coherent excitation of magnons is conventionally achieved through Raman scattering processes, in which the difference-frequency components of the driving field are resonant with the magnon energy. Here, we describe mechanisms by which the sum-frequency components of the driving field can be used to coherently excite magnons through two-particle absorption processes. We use the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert formalism to compare the spin-precession amplitudes that different types of impulsive stimulated and ionic Raman scattering processes and their sum-frequency counterparts induce in an antiferromag…
We present the development and performance of a Fourier transformation (FT) based Raman spectrometer working with visible laser (532 nm) excitation. It is generally thought that FT-Raman spectrometers are not viable in the visible range where shot-noise limits the detector performance and therein they are outperformed by grating based, dispersive ones. We show that contrary to this common belief, the recent advances of high-performance interference filters makes the FT-Raman design a valid alternative to dispersive Raman spectrometers for samples which do not luminesce. We critically compare t…
Electronic Raman scattering and optical phonon self-energies are studied on single crystals of $LuB_{12}$ with different isotopic composition in the temperature region 10-650K and at pressures up to 10 GPa. The shape and energy position of the spectral peaks depend on the magnitude of the probed wave vector, temperature, and symmetry of excitations. We simulated experimental spectra using electronic structure obtained in the density function theory and taking into account the electron-phonon scattering. The emergence of a broad continuum in the spectra is identified with the inelastic scatteri…
We present an analysis of deep-UV Raman measurements of graphite, graphene and carbon nanotubes. For excitation energies above the strong optical absorption peak at the $M$ point in the Brillouin zone ($\approx 4.7\,\text{eV}$), we partially suppress double-resonant scattering processes and observe the two-phonon density of states of carbon nanomaterials. The measured peaks are assigned to contributions from LO, TO, and LA phonon branches, supported by calculations of the phonon dispersion. Moreover, we gain access to the infrared-active $E_{1u}$ mode in graphite. By lowering the excitation en…
Excitation of four coherent phonon modes of different symmetries has been realized in copper metaborate CuB$_2$O$_4$ via impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS). Phonons were detected by monitoring changes in the linear optical birefringence using the balanced-detection (BD) technique. We compare the results of BD-ISRS experiment to the polarized spontaneous Raman scattering spectra. We show that the agreement between the two sets of data obtained by these allied techniques in a wide phonon frequencies range of 4-14 THz can be achieved by rigorously taking into account the symmetry of the…
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 78, 113407 (2008)], Poncharal et al. studied the Raman spectra of misoriented bilayer graphene. They found that the blueshift of 2D band of misoriented graphene relative to that of single layer graphene shows a strong dependence on the excitation laser energy. The blueshift increases with decreasing excitation energy. This finding contradicts our explanation of reduction of Fermi velocity of folded/misoriented graphene [Ni et al. Phys. Rev. B 77, 235403 (2008)]. In this comment, we present more experimental results from our group as well as from others to show t…
High quality InN nanoparticles are grown using atmospheric chemical vapour deposition technique via a self-seeded catalytic approach in the temperature range of 580 to 650 oC. In this temperature region, nucleation barrier of InN is overcome by seeding the low density In nano-particles prior to the introduction of reactive ammonia. Samples having increasing carrier density are grown with the help of increasing growth temperature to understand its role in optical phonon structure. Near resonance Raman spectra show complete different phonon pictures as compared to those for the off-resonance spe…
Atomically thin MoS$_{2}$ crystals have been recognized as a quasi-2D semiconductor with remarkable physics properties. This letter reports our Raman scattering measurements on multilayer and monolayer MoS$_{2}$, especially in the low-frequency range ($<$50 cm$^{-1}$). We find two low-frequency Raman modes with contrasting thickness dependence. With increasing the number of MoS$_{2}$ layers, one shows a significant increase in frequency while the other decreases following a 1/N (N denotes layer-number) trend. With the aid of first-principle calculations we assign the former as the shear mode $…
We report an investigation of DyScO3 and GdScO3 single crystals by Raman scattering in various scattering configurations and at various wavelengths. The Raman spectra are well-defined and the reported spectral signature together with the mode assignment sets the basis for the use of Raman scattering for the investigation of RE-scandates. The observed positions of Raman modes for DyScO3 are for most bands in reasonable agreement with recent theoretical ab initio predictions of the vibrational spectrum for the same material. Further to the phonon signature, a luminescence signal is observed for …
The electronic structure and structural evolution of hydrogenated graphene are investigated by Raman spectroscopy with multiple excitations. The excitation energy dependent saturation effect on the ratio of integrated intensities of D and G modes (ID/IG) is revealed and further developed as a quick method for estimation of inter-defect distance and defect density in hydrogenated graphene. At low hydrogen coverage, the chemisorbed H atoms behave like defects in sp2 C=C matrix; while for a high hydrogen coverage, the sp3 C-H bonds become coalescent clusters, resulting in confinement effect on th…
We present a resonance Raman study of the disorder-induced D mode in a sample highly enriched with semiconducting (9,7) single-walled carbon nanotubes in the excitation energy range of 1.49 - 2.05 eV. The intensity of the D mode shows a resonance behavior near the optical transition of the (9,7) tube. The well-known dispersion of the D-mode frequency, on the other hand, is not observed at the resonance, but only above a certain excitation energy. We explain our results by numerical simulations of the D-mode spectra.
We investigated polarization dependence of the Raman modes in black phosphorus (BP) using five different excitation wavelengths. The crystallographic orientation was determined by comparing polarized optical microscopy with high-resolution transmission electron microscope analysis. In polarized Raman spectroscopy, the B2g mode shows the same polarization dependence regardless of the excitation wavelength or the sample thickness. On the other hand, the Ag1 and Ag2 modes show a peculiar polarization behavior that depends on the excitation wavelength and the sample thickness. The thickness depend…
As the silicon industry continues to push the limits of device dimensions, tools such as Raman spectroscopy are ideal to analyze and characterize the doped silicon channels. The effect of inter-valence band transitions on the zone center optical phonon in heavily p-type doped silicon is studied by Raman spectroscopy for a wide range of excitation wavelengths extending from the red (632.8 nm) into the ultra-violet (325 nm). The asymmetry in the one-phonon Raman lineshape is attributed to a Fano interference involving the overlap of a continuum of electronic excitations with a discrete phonon st…
The absolute integrated intensity of the single-phonon Raman peak at 1580 cm^{-1} is calculated for a clean graphene monolayer. The resulting intensity is determined by the trigonal warping of the electronic bands and the anisotropy of the electron-phonon coupling, and is proportional to the second power of the excitation frequency. The main contribution to the process comes from the intermediate electron-hole states with typical energies of the order of the excitation frequency, contrary to what has been reported earlier. This occurs because of strong cancellations between different terms of …
Using the methods of scanning electron (SEM) and atom force microscopy (AFM) as well as photoluminescence (PL) and Raman micro-spectroscopy, we investigated $Zn_{1-x}Co_xO$ films ($x=5$ and $15\%$) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on sapphire substrates. It is found that the films have a nanocrystalline structure with the grain size decreased from $\sim150$ down to $28$ nm at changing the $Co$ concentration from $5$ to $15\%$. High-resolution SEM images of $Zn_{0.85}Co_{0.15}O$ film have been interpreted as inhomogeneous lateral distribution of $Co$ atoms. Two broad emission bands observed in s…
The resonance effects on the Raman spectra from 5 to 900 cm-1 of few-layer MoS2 thin films up to 14-layers were investigated by using six excitation energies. For the main first-order Raman peaks, the intensity maximum occurs at ~2.8 eV for single layer and at ~2.5 eV for few-layer MoS2, which correspond to the band-gap energy. At the excitation energy of 1.96 eV, several anomalous behaviors are observed. Many second-order peaks are anomalously enhanced even though the main first-order peaks are not enhanced. In the low-frequency region (<100 cm-1), a broad peak centered at ~38 cm-1 and its se…
The micro-Raman scattering response of a graphene-like location on the surface of bulk natural graphite is investigated both at $T=\unit{4.2}{K}$ and at room temperature in magnetic fields up to 29 T. Two different polarization configurations, co-circular and crossed-circular, are employed in order to determine the Raman scattering selection rules. Several distinct series of electronic excitations are observed and we discuss their characteristic shapes and amplitudes. In particular, we report a clear splitting of the signals associated with the inter-Landau level excitations $-n\rightarrow+n$.…
The weakly screened electron-hole interactions in an atomically thin semiconductor not only downshift its excitation spectrum from a quasiparticle one, but also redistribute excitation energies and wavefunction characters with profound effects on diverse modes of material response, including the exciton-phonon scattering processes accessible to resonant Raman measurements. Here we develop a first-principles framework to calculate frequency-dependent resonant Raman intensities that includes excitonic effects and goes beyond the Placzek approximation. We show how excitonic effects in MoS2 strong…
Resonant Raman spectra (RRS) of O-H and O-D vibration and libration modes, their combinations and higher harmonics have been observed in LiTaO3 polycrystalline thin films. RRS peaks are superimposed on photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. Monochromatic light from a xenon lamp is used as excitation source. PL spectrum shows two broad peaks, first near the band gap in UV (4.4-4.8eV) and another in the sub band gap region (< 4.0 eV). Band gap PL along with RRS peaks are reported for the first time. Photoluminescence excitation spectrum (PLE) shows a peak at 4.8 eV. Peak positions and full width at ha…
We report inelastic light scattering experiments on superconductor Ce0.6Y0.4FeAsO0.8F0.2 from 4K to 300K covering the superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 48.6K. A strong evidence of the superconductivity induced phonon renormalization for the A1g phonon mode near 150 cm-1 associated with the Ce/Y vibrations is observed as reflected in the anomalous red-shift and decrease in the linewidth below Tc. Invoking the coupling of this mode with the superconducting gap, the superconducting gap (2) at zero temperature is estimated to be ~ 20 meV i.e the ratio is ~ 5, suggesting Ce0.6Y0.4FeAsO0.8…
Raman spectroscopic investigations are carried out on ZnO nanoparticles for various photon energies. Intensities of E1-LO and E2 modes exhibit large changes as the excitation energy varied from 2.41 to 3.815 eV, signifying substantially large contribution of Frohlich interaction to the Raman polarizability as compared to deformation potential close to the resonance. Relative strength of these two mechanisms is estimated for the first time in nanoparticles and compared with those in the bulk.
We investigated Raman spectra of single-layer and multi-layer graphene under ultraviolet laser excitation at the wavelength of 325 nm. It was found that while the G peak of graphene remains pronounced in UV Raman spectra, the 2D band intensity undergoes severe quenching. The evolution of the ratio of the intensities of the G and 2D peaks, I(G)/I(2D), as the number of graphene layers n changes from n=1 to n=5, is different in UV Raman spectra from that in conventional visible Raman spectra excited at the 488 nm and 633 nm wavelengths. The 2D band under UV excitation shifts to larger wave number…
