In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 78, 113407 (2008)], Poncharal et al. studied the Raman spectra of misoriented bilayer graphene. They found that the blueshift of 2D band of misoriented graphene relative to that of single layer graphene shows a strong dependence on the excitation laser energy. The blueshift increases with decreasing excitation energy. This finding contradicts our explanation of reduction of Fermi velocity of folded/misoriented graphene [Ni et al. Phys. Rev. B 77, 235403 (2008)]. In this comment, we present more experimental results from our group as well as from others to show that the blueshift is indeed only weakly dependent on excitation energy. We therefore suggest that our explanation of 2D blushift of folded graphene due to reduction of Fermi velocity is still valid.
It is well established that some kinds of lattice deformations in graphene monolayer, which change electron hopping in sublattice and affect in-plane motion of electrons, may induce out-of-plane pseudo-magnetic fields as large as 100 T. Here, we demonstrate that stacking misorientation in graphene bilayers mimics the effect of huge in-plane pseudo-magnetic fields greater than 1000 T on the interlayer hopping of electrons. As well as addressing the similarity between the effect of in-plane pseudo-magnetic fields and twisting on the electronic band structure of Bernal graphene bilayer, we point …
We examine how the misorientation of a few stacked graphene layers affects the electronic structure of carbon nanosystems. We present {\it ab initio} calculations on bi- and trilayer systems to demonstrate that the massless Fermion behavior typical of single layered graphene is also found in incommensurate multilayered graphitic systems. We also investigate the consequences of this property on experimental fingerprints, such as Raman spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Our simulations reveal that STM images of turbostratic few layer graphite are sensitive to the layer arrange…
We investigate the effects of lattice disorders on the low frequency Raman spectra of bilayer MoS2. The bilayer MoS2 was subjected to defect engineering by irradiation with a 30 keV He+ ion beam and the induced morphology change was characterized by transmission electron microscopy. With increasing ion dose the shear mode is observed to redshift and it is also suppressed sharply compared to other Raman peaks. We use the linear chain model to describe the changes to the Raman spectra. Our observations suggest that crystallite size and orientation are the dominant factors behind the changes to t…
We report the first magnetic-field-dependent Raman scattering studies on Pb(Zr,Ti)O3-CoFe2O4 bilayer multiferroic system. The phonon frequencies of the nano-bilayers obviously change with magnetic field, which is absent in the single Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 films. The magnetostriction of the CoFe2O4 layer generates stress mechanically transferred to the Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 layer, resulting in the mode changes. The observed magnetic-field-induced softening of the soft mode in the Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 layer bears a striking resemblance to direct magnetoelectric output in the bilayers, providing evidence for stress-mediated …
The optical conductivities of graphene layers are strongly dependent on their stacking orders. Our first-principle calculations show that while the optical conductivities of single layer graphene (SLG) and bilayer graphene (BLG) with Bernal stacking are almost frequency independent in the visible region, the optical conductivity of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is frequency dependent, giving rise to additional absorption features due to the band folding effect. Experimentally, we obtain from contrast spectra the optical conductivity profiles of BLG with different stacking geometries. Some TBG…
The stacking faults (deviates from Bernal) will break the translational symmetry of multilayer graphenes and modify their electronic and optical behaviors to the extent depending on the interlayer coupling strength. This paper addresses the stacking-induced band splitting and folding effect on the electronic band structure of twisted bilayer graphene. Based on the first-principles density functional theory study, we predict that the band folding effect of graphene layers may enable the G band Raman double resonance in the visible excitation range. Such prediction is confirmed experimentally wi…
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures unravel a new platform to study strongly correlated quantum phases. The interlayer coupling in these heterostructures is sensitive to twist angles ($θ$) and key to controllably tune several exotic properties. Here, we demonstrate a systematic evolution of the interlayer coupling strength with twist angle in bilayer $\mathrm{MoS_{2}}$ using a combination of Raman spectroscopy and classical simulations. At zero doping, we show a \textit{monotonic} increment of the separation between the $\mathrm{A_{1g}}$ and $\mathrm{E^{1}_{2g}}$ mode frequencies as $θ$ dec…
The vibrational properties of twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) show complex features, due to the intricate energy landscape of its low-symmetry configurations. A machine learning-based approach is developed to provide a continuous model between the twist angle and the simulated Raman spectra of tBLGs. Extracting the structural information of the twist angle from Raman spectra corresponds to solving a complicated inverse problem. Once trained, the machine learning regressors (MLRs) quickly provide predictions without human bias and with an average of 98% of the data variance being explained by t…
The Raman shift, broadening, and relative Raman intensities of bilayer graphene are computed as functions of the electron concentration. We include dynamic effects for the phonon frequencies and we consider the gap induced in the band structure of bilayer graphene by an external electric field. We show that from the analysis of the Raman spectra of gated bilayer graphene it is possible to quantitatively identify the amount of charges coming from the atmosphere and from the substrate. These findings suggest that Raman spectroscopy of bilayer graphene can be used to characterize the electrostati…
Twisted 2D bilayer materials are created by artificial stacking of two monolayer crystal networks of 2D materials with a desired twisting angle $θ$. The material forms a moiré superlattice due to the periodicity of both top and bottom layer crystal structure. The optical properties are modified by lattice reconstruction and phonon renormalization, which makes optical spectroscopy an ideal characterization tool to study novel physics phenomena. Here, we report a Raman investigation on a full period of the twisted bilayer (tB) WSe$_2$ moiré superlattice (\textit i.e. 0° $\leq θ\leq$ 60°). We obs…
The electronic structure of bilayer graphene is investigated from a resonant Raman study using different laser excitation energies. The values of the parameters of the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure model for graphite are measured experimentally and some of them differ significantly from those reported previously for graphite, specially that associated with the difference of the effective mass of electrons and holes. The splitting of the two TO phonon branches in bilayer graphene is also obtained from the experimental data. Our results have implications for bilayer graphene electronic devices.
Nanoscale twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is quite instable and will change its structure to Bernal (or AB-stacking) bilayer with a much lower energy. Therefore, the lack of nanoscale TBG makes its electronic properties not accessible in experiment up to now. In this work, a special confined TBG is obtained in the overlaid area of two continuous misoriented graphene sheets. The width of the confined region of the TBG changes gradually from about 22 nm to 0 nm. By using scanning tunnelling microscopy, we studied carefully the structure and the electronic properties of the nanoscale TBG. Our resu…
The temperature evolution of the resonant Raman scattering from high-quality bilayer 2H-MoS$_{2}$ encapsulated in hexagonal BN flakes is presented. The observed resonant Raman scattering spectrum as initiated by the laser energy of 1.96 eV, close to the A excitonic resonance, shows rich and distinct vibrational features that are otherwise not observed in non-resonant scattering. The appearance of 1$^{st}$ and 2$^{nd}$ order phonon modes is unambiguously observed in a broad range of temperatures from 5 K to 320 K. The spectrum includes the Raman-active modes, $i.e.$ E$_\textrm{1g}^{2}$($Γ$) and…
Polarization resolved micro-Raman spectroscopy was carried out at the edges of bilayer graphene. We find strong dependence of the intensity of the G band on the incident laser polarization, with its intensity dependence being 90 degrees out of phase for the armchair and zigzag case, in accordance with theoretical predictions. For the case of mixed-state edges we demonstrate that the polarization contrast reflects the fractional composition of armchair and zigzag edges, providing a monitor of edge purity, which is an important parameter for the development of efficient nanoelectronic devices.
The creation of van der Waals heterostructures based on a graphene monolayer and other two-dimensional crystals has attracted great interest because atomic registry of the two-dimensional crystals can modify the electronic spectra and properties of graphene. Twisted graphene bilayer can be viewed as a special van der Waals structure composed of two mutual misoriented graphene layers, where the sublayer graphene not only plays the role of a substrate, but also acts as an equivalent role as the top graphene layer in the structure. Here we report the electronic spectra of slightly twisted graphen…
Probing phonons, quasi-particle excitations and their coupling has enriched our understanding of these 2D materials and proved to be crucial for developing their potential applications. Here, we report comprehensive temperature, 4-330 K, and polarization-dependent Raman measurements on mono and bilayer MoSe2. Phonon's modes up to fourth-order are observed including forbidden Raman and IR modes, understood considering Frohlich mechanism of exciton-phonon coupling. Most notably, anomalous variations in the phonon linewidths with temperature pointed at the significant role of electron-phonon coup…
The twist angle between the monolayers in van der Waals heterostructures provides a new degree of freedom in tuning material properties. We compare the optical properties of WSe2 homobilayers with 2H and 3R stacking using photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, and reflectance contrast measurements under ambient and cryogenic temperatures. Clear stacking- dependent differences are evident for all temperatures, with both photoluminescence and reflectance contrast spectra exhibiting a blue shift in spectral features in 2H compared to 3R bilayers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations eluci…
Here we show that twisted graphene trilayer made by misoriented stacking a graphene monolayer on top of a Bernal graphene bilayer can exhibit rich and tailored electronic properties. For the case that the graphene monolayer and bilayer are strongly coupled, both the massless Dirac fermions and massive chiral fermions coexist in the twisted trilayer, leading to unique in-plane chiral tunneling. For a weak coupling between the two graphene systems, the distinct chiralities and pseudospin textures of quasiparticles in monolayer and bilayer enable vertical valley-polarized quantum tunneling betwee…
Van der Waals layered materials with well-defined twist angles between the crystal lattices of individual layers have attracted increasing attention due to the emergence of unexpected material properties. As many properties critically depend on the exact twist angle and its spatial homogeneity, there is a need for a fast and non-invasive characterization technique of the local twist angle, to be applied preferably right after stacking. We demonstrate that confocal Raman spectroscopy can be utilized to spatially map the twist angle in stacked bilayer graphene for angles between 6.5° and 8° when…
Spectroscopic analysis of large biomolecules is critical in a number of applications, including medical diagnostics and label-free biosensing. Recently, it has been shown that Raman spectroscopy of proteins can be used to diagnose some diseases, including a few types of cancer. These experiments have however been performed using traditional Raman spectroscopy and the development of the Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) assays suitable for large biomolecules could lead to a substantial decrease in the amount of specimen necessary for these experiments. We present a new method to achiev…

Tailoring the interlayer twist angle of bilayer graphene (BLG) has a significant influence on its electronic properties, including superconductivity, topological transitions, ferromagnetic states and correlated insulating states. These exotic electronic properties are sensitively dependent on the work functions of bilayer graphene samples. Here, the twisted angle-dependent work functions of CVD-grown twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) are detailed investigated by Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) in combination with Raman spectra. The thickness-dependent surface potentials of Bernal-stacked mu…
Though graphene has been intensively studied by Raman spectroscopy, in this letter, we report a study of second-order overtone and combinational Raman modes in an unexplored range of 1690-2150 cm-1 in nonsuspended commensurate (AB-stacked), incommensurate (folded) and suspended graphene layers. Based on the double resonance theory, four dominant modes in this range have been assigned as 2oTO (M band), iTA+LO, iTO+LA and LO+LA. Differing to AB-stacked bilayer graphene or few layer graphene, the M band disappears in single layer graphene. Systematic analysis reveals that interlayer interaction i…
The most important bands for the evaluation of strain in graphene (the 2D and 2D prime modes) are investigated. It is shown that for Bernal-stacked bilayers, the two-phonon Raman features have three different components that can be assigned to processes originating solely from the top graphene layer, bottom graphene layer, and from a combination of processes originating both from the top and bottom layers. The individual components of the 2D and 2D prime modes are disentangled. The reported results enable addressing the properties of individual graphene layers in isotopically labelled turbostr…
Raman measurements on monolayer graphene folded back upon itself as an ordered but skew-stacked bilayer (i.e. with interlayer rotation) presents new mechanism for Raman scattering in sp2 carbons that arises in systems that lack coherent AB interlayer stacking. Although the parent monolayer does not exhibit a D-band, the interior of the skewed bilayer produces a strong two-peak Raman feature near 1350 cm-1; one of these peaks is non-dispersive, unlike all previously observed D-band features in sp2 carbons. Within a double-resonant model of Raman scattering, these unusual features are consistent…
With the increasing interest in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) of the past years, fast, reliable, and non-destructive methods to precisely determine the twist angle are required. Raman spectroscopy potentially provides such method, given the large amount of information about the state of the graphene that is encoded in its Raman spectrum. However, changes in the Raman spectra induced by the stacking order can be very subtle, thus making the angle identification tedious. In this work, we propose the use of machine learning (ML) analysis techniques for the automated classification of the Raman …
Using first-principles techniques, we calculate the renormalization of the electron Fermi velocity and the vibrational lifetimes arising from electron-phonon interactions in doped bilayer graphene and in graphite and compare the results with the corresponding quantities in graphene. For similar levels of doping, the Fermi velocity renormalization in bilayer graphene and in graphite is found to be approximately 30% larger than that in graphene. In the case of bilayer graphene, this difference is shown to arise from the interlayer interaction. We discuss our findings in the light of recent photo…
The effect of grain boundaries and wrinkles on the electrical properties of polycrystalline graphene is pronounced. Here we investigate the stitching between grains of polycrystalline graphene, specifically, overlapping of layers at the boundaries, grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and subsequently doped by the oxidized Cu substrate. We analyze overlapped regions between 60 and 220 nm wide via Raman spectroscopy, and find that some of these overlapped boundaries contain AB stacked bilayers. The Raman spectra from the overlapped grain boundaries are distinctly different from bilayer grap…
Twisted stacked few layer black phosphorus heterostructures were successfully fabricated in this work. Abnormal blue shifts in their Ag1 and Ag2 Raman peaks and unique optical reflections were observed in these samples. The phonon behavior difference can be explained by our density functional theory calculations, which suggest that interlayer coupling has a significant effect in twisted bilayer black phosphorus. According to the calculations, the interlayer interactions are not simply van der Waals interactions. Additional interactions, such as weak valence bonding between the top and bottom f…
One of the greatest issues of nanoelectronics today is how to control the heating of the components. Graphene is a promising material in this area and it is essential to study its thermal properties. Here, the effect of heating a bilayer structure was investigated using in situ Raman spectroscopy. In order to observe the effects on each individual layer, an isotopically labelled bilayer graphene was synthesized where the two layers are composed of different carbon isotopes. Therefore, the frequency of the phonons in the Raman spectra is shifted in relation to each other. This technique was use…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) has emerged as an exciting new material with tunable electronic properties ranging from superconductivity to correlated insulating phases. But current methods of fabrication and identification of TBLG are painstaking and laborious. In this work, we combine Raman spectroscopy with the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) data clustering algorithm to identify areas with particular twist angles, from a TBLG sample with a mixture of orientations. We present two approaches to this cluster analysis: training the GMM on Raman parameters returned by peak fits, and on full Raman…
The discovery of electric field induced bandgap opening in bilayer graphene opens new door for making semiconducting graphene without aggressive size scaling or using expensive substrates. However, bilayer graphene samples have been limited to um size scale thus far, and synthesis of wafer scale bilayer graphene posts tremendous challenge. Here we report homogeneous bilayer graphene films over at least 2 inch x 2 inch area, synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on copper foil and subsequently transferred to arbitrary substrates. The bilayer nature of graphene film is verified by Raman spect…
Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) provides us with a large rotational freedom to explore new physics and novel device applications, but many of its basic properties remain unresolved. Here we report the synthesis and systematic Raman study of tBLG. Chemical vapor deposition was used to synthesize hexagon- shaped tBLG with a rotation angle that can be conveniently determined by relative edge misalignment. Superlattice structures are revealed by the observation of two distinctive Raman features: folded optical phonons and enhanced intensity of the 2D-band. Both signatures are strongly correlated w…
The electronic properties of graphene nano-flakes (GNFs) with different edge passivation is investigated by using density functional theory. Passivation with F and H atoms are considered: C$_{N_c}$ X$_{N_x}$ (X=F or H). We studied GNFs with $10<N_c<56$ and limit ourselves to the lowest energy configurations. We found that: i) the energy difference $Δ$ between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) decreases with $N_c$, ii) topological defects (pentagon and heptagon) break the symmetry of the GNFs and enhance the electric polarization, i…
The electronic band structure of twisted bilayer graphene develops van Hove singularities whose energy depends on the twist angle between the two layers. Using Raman spectroscopy, we monitor the evolution of the electronic band structure upon doping using the G peak area which is enhanced when the laser photon energy is resonant with the energy separation of the van Hove singularities. Upon charge doping, the Raman G peak area initially increases for twist angles larger than a critical angle and decreases for smaller angles. To explain this behavior with twist angle, the energy of separation o…
We use micro-Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy at 300K to investigate the influence of uniaxial tensile strain on the vibrational and optoelectronic properties of monolayer and bilayer MoS2 on a flexible substrate. The initially degenerate E^1_{2g} Raman mode is split into a doublet as a direct consequence of the strain applied to MoS2 through Van der Waals coupling at the sample-substrate interface. We observe a strong shift of the direct band gap of 48meV/(% of strain) for the monolayer and 46meV/% for the bilayer, whose indirect gap shifts by 86meV/%. We find a strong decrease o…
Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) devices with ion gel gate dielectrics are studied using Raman spectroscopy in the twist angle regime where a resonantly enhanced G band can be observed. We observe prominent splitting and intensity quenching on the G Raman band when the carrier density is tuned away from charge neutrality. This G peak splitting is attributed to asymmetric charge doping in the two graphene layers, which reveals individual phonon self-energy renormalization of the two weakly-coupled layers of graphene. We estimate the effective interlayer capacitance at low doping density of tBLG …
We present an \textit{ab initio} study based on density-functional theory of first- and second-order Raman spectra of graphene-based materials with different stacking arrangements and numbers of layers. Going from monolayer and bilayer graphene to periodic graphitic structures, we investigate the behavior of the first-order G-band and of the second-order 2D-band excited by the same set of photon energies. The former turns out to be very similar in all considered graphene-based materials, while in the latter we find the signatures of individual structures. With a systematic analysis of the seco…
Notwithstanding numerous density functional studies on the chemically induced transformation of multilayer graphene into a diamond-like film, a comprehensive convincing experimental proof of such a conversion is still lacking. We show that the fluorination of graphene sheets in Bernal (AB)-stacked bilayer graphene (AB-BLG) grown by chemical vapor deposition on a single crystal CuNi(111) surface triggers the formation of interlayer carbon-carbon bonds, resulting in a fluorinated diamond monolayer (F-diamane). Induced by fluorine chemisorption, the phase transition from AB-BLG to single layer di…
Graphene modifications with oxygen or hydrogen are well known in contrast to carbon attachment to the graphene lattice. The chemical modification of graphene sheets with aromatic diazonium ions (carbon attachment) is analyzed by confocal Raman spectroscopy. The temporal and spatial evolution of surface adsorbed species allowed accurate tracking of the chemical reaction and identification of intermediates. The controlled transformation of sp2 to sp3 carbon proceeds in two separate steps. The presented derivatization is selective for single layer graphene and allows controlled transformation of …
We report the growth of thickness-controlled rotationally faulted multilayer graphene (rf-MLG) on Ni foils by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition and their characterization by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The surface morphology and thickness were investigated by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and transmittance measurements. These results have revealed that the thickness of rf-MLG can be effectively controlled by the thickness of the Ni foil rather than the flow rate of CH$_4$, H$_2$, Ar. In the Raman spectroscopy measurements, we observed most Raman peaks of the graphitic mat…
Correct defect quantification in graphene samples is crucial both for fundamental and applied re-search. Raman spectroscopy represents the most widely used tool to identify defects in graphene. However, despite its extreme importance the relation between the Raman features and the amount of defects in multilayered graphene samples has not been experimentally verified. In this study we intentionally created defects in single layer graphene, turbostratic bilayer graphene and Bernal stacked bilayer graphene by oxygen plasma. By employing isotopic labelling, our study reveals substantial differenc…
Among the most common few-layers transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), WSe2 is the most challenging material from the lattice dynamics point of view. Indeed, for a long time the main two phonon modes (A1g and E12g) have been wrongly assigned. In the last few years, these two modes have been properly interpreted, and their quasi-degeneracy in the monolayer has been used for its identification. In this work, we show that this approach has a limited validity and we propose an alternative, more general approach, based on multi-phonon bands. Moreover, we show and interpret all the peaks (about 4…
An experimental study of Raman scattering in N-layer graphene as a function of the top layer doping is reported. At high doping level, achieved by a CHF_3 plasma treatment, we observe a splitting of the $G$ band in the spectra of bilayer and 4-layer graphene (N even), whereas the splitting is not visible in case of monolayer and trilayer graphene (N odd). The different behaviors are related to distinct electron-phonon interactions, which are affected by symmetry breaking and Fermi level position in different ways in the various N-layer graphenes. In trilayer graphene, a weakening of the electr…
We present a double-resonant Raman mode in few-layer graphene, which is able to probe the number of graphene layers reliably. This so-called N mode on the low-frequency side of the G mode results from a double-resonant Stokes/anti-Stokes process combining a LO and a ZO' phonon. Simulations of the double-resonant Raman spectra in bilayer graphene show very good agreement with the experiments. The investigation of the out-of-plane ZO' phonon for layer number determination is expected to be transferable to other layered materials like boron nitride.
We examine the quantum Hall effect in bilayer graphene grown on Cu substrates by chemical vapor deposition. Spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy suggests a mixture of Bernal (A-B) stacked and rotationally faulted (twisted) domains. Magnetotransport measurements performed on bilayer domains with a wide 2D band reveal quantum Hall states (QHSs) at filling factors $ν=4, 8, 12$ consistent with a Bernal stacked bilayer, while magnetotransport measurements in bilayer domains defined by a narrow 2D band show a superposition of QHSs of two independent monolayers. The analysis of the Shubnikov-de Haas…
Since their discovery, graphene-based systems represent an exceptional playground to explore the emergence of peculiar quantum effects. The present paper focuses on the anomalous appearence of strong infrared phonon resonances in the optical spectroscopy of bilayer graphene and on their pronounced Fano-like asymmetry, both tunable in gated devices. By developing a full microscopic many-body approach for the optical phonon response we explain how both effects can be quantitatively accounted for by the quantum interference of electronic and phononic excitations. We show that the phonon modes bor…
Hot-filament process was recently employed to convert, totally or partially, few-layer graphene (FLG) with Bernal stacking into crystalline sp$^3$-C sheets at low pressure. Those materials constitute new synthetic carbon nanoforms. The result reported earlier relies on Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared microscopy. As soon as the number of graphene layers in the starting FLG is higher than 2-3, the sp$^2$-C to sp$^3$-C conversion tends to be partial only. We hereby report new evidences confirming the sp$^2$-C to sp$^3$-C conversion from electron diffraction at low energy,Raman s…
The phonon dispersions of monolayer and few-layer graphene (AB bilayer, ABA and ABC trilayers) are investigated using the density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT). Compared with the monolayer, the optical phonon $E_{2g}$ mode at $Γ$ splits into two and three doubly degenerate branches for bilayer and trilayer graphene, respectively, due to the weak interlayer coupling. These modes are of various symmetry and exhibit different sensitivity to either Raman or infrared (IR) measurements (or both). The splitting is found to be 5 cm$^{-1}$ for bilayer and 2 to 5 cm$^{-1}$ for trilayer graphene.…
Edges naturally exist in a single-layer graphene sample. Similarly, individual graphene layers in a multilayer graphene sample contribute their own edges. We study the Raman spectrum at the edge of a graphene layer laid on n layer graphene (nLG). We found that the D band observed from the edge of the top graphene layer exhibits an identical line shape to that of disordered (n+1)LG induced by ion-implantation. Based on the spectral features of the D and 2D bands, we identified two types of alignment configurations at the edges of mechanically-exfoliated bilayer and trilayer graphenes, whose edg…
We theoretically investigated phonon dispersion in AA-stacked, AB-stacked and twisted bilayer graphene with various rotation angles. The calculations were performed using the Born-von-Karman model for the intra-layer atomic interactions and the Lennard-Jones potential for the inter-layer interactions. It was found that the stacking order affects the out-of-plane acoustic phonon modes the most. The difference in the phonon densities of states in the twisted bilayer graphene and in AA- or AB-stacked bilayer graphene appears in the phonon frequencies range 90 - 110 1/cm. Twisting bilayer graphene…
We propose a table-top method to obtain bilayer quasi-free-standing epitaxial-graphene (QFSEG) on SiC(0001). By applying a microwave annealing in air to a monolayer epitaxial graphene (EG) grown on SiC(0001), the buffer layer is decoupled from the SiC substrate and becomes the second EG layer as confirmed by the low energy electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The most likely mechanism of the decoupling is given by the oxidation of the SiC surface, w…
